The best skill that anybody could take away as part of hockey program is resilience and effort in my opinion. That way, rather than the overall success, what's important and highly valued is the consistency of continuing to try even when things go well or not, and looking at the bigger picture of the effort it takes to get to a point, rather than the results of it.
For example, for the kids looking to develop their shot, the focus that coaches will be putting through is building the ability to extend their practice duration over a period of time. That way when they recognize how much they've progressed in both their accuracy as well as the number of shots they're able to take, there's a sense of both improvement and recognition of the prior efforts being building blocks that lead to the improvements. For something like skating, looking at how the bit of time spent on the fundamentals being the core focus as opposed to being timed. |
