Given what was known about other offers available to Calgary for Tkachuk, it's hard to imagine another scenario where there's a clear cut scenario where they win out especially with how they knew they needed to get value from a player who was going to leave in a year.

However you have to question what sort of thought would go into bringing somebody like Huberdeau in when the coach you had committed to at the time played a style that was so against the strengths of a player. Weeger, Schwindt and a 1st round pick meant that there was quality, though in several different pieces as part of the roster, but Huberdeau appeared to never have a chance under a coach like Sutter. Just an unfortunate attempt all around.
