Born in the Russian city of Omsk, Slava was born to wear skates. Watching Avangard Omsk from a young age torpedoed his passion towards the rink. Hours upon hours skating in pick up games on the Irtysh River, drilling faceoffs over and over with his patient father to hone his craft and practicing shooting top corns with the Russian homies to improve his skills have finally paid off. The plane ticket bought to travel to the SMJHL draft was the best money he had ever spent.

Speaking limited English, Slava initially found difficulties from the start. He was unsure he would be able to communicate his love of the game and description of his skill set to the scouts seeking interviews with the unknown Russian prospect. From conversation to conversation, his confidence grew. Learning quickly is something he knew he would be able to portray to the scouts where the value of picking him would be undeniable. Many conversations were had with league scouts but Slava felt unsure of where he would land ultimately, as most rookies do entering the SMJHL.

Enter…….JFK

Through patience, understanding and a mutual dislike of the Philadelphia area, Slava was able to truly connect with a scout. He felt understood and a wave of euphoria swept over the SMJHL prospect. There was no great indication that he would be selected early on by any means. Although his knowledge of the SMJHL was limited, he had a feeling of excitement not yet drawn out of the stoic Russian center. 

Then, came draft day. Enthralled with sharing a meal and laughter with his family, he waited with excitement to hear the draft results from his home in Omsk. Though the time difference delayed receiving the exciting news, Slava finally caught wind of what had happened. Not only was he taken in the first round, this was surprise enough. But, to hear that NBB had traded up to take him so early on reassured the belief in himself that he had shown sufficiently, the value in choosing him. 

Filled with vigor, a desire to prove himself and excitement for the future, Slava packed his hockey bag and head to the airport to begin his SMJHL career with the Nevada Battleborn.

Maybe after a few seasons he’ll get used to the heat…….
