The Maine Timber and Nevada Battleborn could easily take the entire list of MVP caliber talent in the SMJHL. Don’t get me wrong, the entire Maine Timber roster is otherworldly in terms of plus/minus, taking AT LEAST the top 10 spots in the SMHJL. But which on that roster make their bids for the top player? In my list, I’ve included two forwards, one defenseman, and one goalie.
Doug Weight, C (MET) 36-59-95 Sure, Weight is 8th in goal scoring, just 9 goals out of the top spot. But the total offense the third year player in Maine is able to output is something to be studied. 8 points clear of teammate Anna Skovgaard in second for points proves there’s something special about this player. Whether that be scoring goals, or getting the puck on their teammates sticks, this player has the offensive vision to win. Baron Samedi, C (COL) 40-46-86 I’m just going to say this; a 20.94% shooting percentage feels illegal. Another third year player in the SMJHL is making their mark, looking to be a top prospect for the SHL. It feels any time this player steps on the ice, there will be a goal for Colorado. Josh Fewer, D (NBB) 5-30-35 +31 on a team that’s 8th most scored on. Almost double the next player on their team (!) . Most TOI for Nevada. Improved on their ability to stay out of the box. Everything you want out of your defense. I heavily considered Cade de Vries, Jeyeff Effo, and Hip Hurts on the Nevada D corps, but Fewer just has that edge. Sure, not as offensively potent, but you can’t win games if your team is all in the minus. Jakub Alexa, G (YUM) 16-7-2 .920 It can be quite difficult to properly gauge goalies. The SMJHL rookie has been splitting time in net with teammate Phemeia McLaughlin to better results, and it seems to work for Alexa and Yukon. Yukon, second in the Northern conference, is 4 points clear of third place Kelowna, and 5 points behind Northern Conference leading Anchorage. Keep an eye out for Alexa to have more playing time come playoffs. |
