Smitty is in an interesting position in terms of gear. As an undead fish skeleton, Detroit has had to consult him and numerous professionals multiple times to figure out what accommodations need to be made in terms of safety. Does a fish need to wear a helmet? Does he need a chest protector if he has no "chest"? How do you put ice skates on a fin? Are pants a consideration???

Ultimately Smitty's bipedal stature helped solve most of these problems, though some cartoonish proportions make things like elbow pads look silly. In addition, he needed a set of custom sticks to account for his lack of opposable thumbs (or any fingers for that matter). There were tough to make; fins tend to flop around a lot more once removed from the water. The equipment engineers had to figure out how to keep Smitty's fins wet so that he could still dexterously maneuver his stick instead of dropping it every time he wanted to make a move.
