Season 71 Draft
#1

It’s the end of the world as we know it…and I feel fine!

Hopefully that is the way everyone feels from the remaining members of the season 71 draft class. We are about to face our first season of regression marking the end of the prime of our career as we start the slow decline to retirement. Luckily for myself I have hit almost all my personal goals and team goals. I hope everyone else left standing from this great class have achieved the same.

Where does that leave us, and who is left currently playing in the SHL?

Furious Chicken – Defense – 2066 TPE - Buffalo
Logan Webb – Left Wing – 2041 TPE – San Francisco
Jay Bryzi – Defense – 2012 TPE - Baltimore
Mercedes Bayle – Left Wing – 2002 TPE – San Francisco
Oliver Castillon – Center – 1969 TPE – Los Angeles
Dominik Winters – Center – 1969 TPE – San Francisco
Filip Svatos – Left Wing – 1933 TPE - Toronto
Levin Schattenaxt – Right Wing – 1921 TPE – San Francisco
Johnny FourStar – Right Wing – 1896 TPE - Winnipeg
Aumy Junior II – Center – 1895 TPE - Toronto
Max Carnage – Center – 1889 TPE – Tampa Bay
Kevin Kim – Center – 1882 TPE - Minnesota
Thomas Liebold – Right Wing – 1787 TPE - Baltimore
Barg Hazbite – Right Wing – 1784 TPE – Philadelphia
Andren Akerson – Right Wing – 1780 TPE – Los Angeles
Thomas Sawschuk – Center – 1776 TPE – New England
Johnny Shuffleboard – Defense – 1698 TPE - Philladelphia
Shootin Blanks – Center – 1527 TPE - Buffalo
Schnopple Lopple – Defense – 1329 TPE - Manhattan
Alexej Kastrba – Right Wing - 1286 TPE - Manhattan
Bellamy Blake – Defense – 1231 TPE - Baltimore
Might-go IA – Defense - 1179 TPE - Toronto
Inactive Forever – Right Wing – 1065 TPE - Chicago
Ally Mathieson – Goalie – 1023 TPE - Minnesota
Scary Jerry – Goalie – 1001 TPE – Minnesota
Ryan Quinatana-Green – Defense – 915 TPE - Edmonton
Boho Biscuit – Defense – 731 TPE - Winnipeg
Mick Mayhem – Defense – 655 TPE - Manhattan

Currently they have 4 new members to the 2k Club and there are another 4 that might reach it with a little luck this season even after regression kicks in, I am cheering you guys on, do not give up and get that badge!

As we reach the end we see a few things, this class was loaded in offensive talent, the 14 of the top 16 earners were a forward position. Defense owns the best player in the draft, with Chicken running away with the lead early on in juniors and never surrendering it through his entire career. Goalies may have been the “disappointment” in this draft class as they started with 6 goalies but only 2 are left. Both just barely creep over the 1000 TPE mark. Even with a lesser goalie group, both successful goalies have carved out a good SHL career.

The top teams that currently enjoy the most success from this group:

pride San Francisco Pride: pride
Logan Webb – 2044 TPE
Mercedes Bayle – 2002 TPE
Dominik Winters – 1969 TPE
Levin Schattenaxt – 1921 TPE

TOTAL: 7936 TPE

San Francisco came into the draft with the first overall pick and captured their guy Levin Schattenaxt with it. They knew he would be among the best earners, and he was, but more importantly he was the perfect fit for the locker room they were growing. They followed it up with making a few trades and acquiring Webb and Winters next. Finally they pulled off a trade a few seasons in and acquired Bayle to get the most of this draft class.

Platoon Baltimore Platoon: Platoon

Jay Bryzi – 2012 TPE
Thomas Liebold – 1787 TPE
Bellamy Blake – 1231 TPE

TOTAL: 5030 TPE

In a fun turn of events, the defender they picked earlier turned into the lesser earner between the two (still a solid amount). Blake was selected 7th overall meanwhile Bryzi was picked 9th overall. Then the Platoon took Liebold 12th overall. All in all 9 seasons later an impressive draft haul from the Platoon as each member has been an important part of their team.

Stars Toronto North Stars: Stars

Filip Svatos – 1933 TPE
Aumy Junior II – 1895 TPE

TOTAL: 3828 TPE

Toronto found a lot of value outside the first round. To be fair, Svatos was acquired by trade, originally a second round pick of Tampa (well done Tampa on finding one of the gems in this draft). The Star of the Toronto draft was Aumy Junior II whom they acquired with an extremely late second round pick (number 38 overall), one of the biggest risers on the draft board.

Panthers Los Angeles Panthers: Panthers

Oliver Castillon – 1969 TPE
Andren Akerson – 1780 TPE

TOTAL: 3749 TPE

It is easy to forget just how good Castillon and Akerson can be. If they played on any team but the Panthers, they would be tearing up the league in points, but the depth of Los Angeles can bury the two of them from time to time. Castillon, the 6th overall pick has more than lived up to his selection earning a ton of TPE and should end up a 2k club member. Akerson has exceeded expectations, earning more than half of the first round as an early second round pick.

Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs: Monarchs

Kevin Kim – 1882 TPE
Ally Mathieson – 1023 TPE
Scary Jerry – 1001 TPE

Total: 3906 TPE

Should they be higher on this list based on total TPE, maybe, but I believe this was quantity over quality. Still, they have found in this draft their number one goalie and a capable backup playing as a 1a, 1b combo. They have also found a top 6 center, in Kim whom was a second round pick who has out earned most of this draft class proving he should have been a 1st round pick.

Stampede Buffalo Stampede: Stampede

Furious Chicken – 2066 TPE
Shootin Blanks – 1527 TPE

TOTAL: 3593 TPE

My last team on this list is Buffalo, they took advantage of a trade with Edmonton to acquire the prize of the draft. Chicken has been nothing short of phenomenal throughout his SHL career and while earning TPE. Blanks was a mid first round pick and he has earned as a first round talent. Overall this has been a great draft class for Buffalo.

With all of this said what is left for this class to do? Well there is still a ton of time for each of us to leave our mark on the SHL. I can’t wait to see how the next 5, 10 or more seasons will play out as we try our best to continue to find success, regression comes for all of us but this is not the end but just the start to the twilight of our career.
