As a defenceman, strength is an undeniable need. It's all well and good to be able to do sick dangles and speed down the ice or float a wrister into the top corner, but if you can't separate a player from the puck or hold your ground in front of the best you're going to have a really rough go of things as a defender. That's not even mentioning the importance of mental toughness. To be able to take hits, block every shot you can, lay the body even when every part of you is sore and aching takes serious mental fortitude. But that's what it takes to be a team's number one defenseman, and it that's the goal I set myself then my offseason training need to include some serious training for those traits. It's definitely something that was lacking in my game last year, and hopefully with some improvement it can elevate all the other parts of my game as well. |
