If we're being honest with ourselves the Whalers haven't had much to hope for in recent years and with the call ups this past off season, we are probably looking at more of the same. Entering this season, there is a different air in the locker room. Coming out of one of the worst seasons in SMJHL history, the current Whaler roster is hungry to show they aren't just going to be the laughing stock of the league. Looking to rely on solid fundamentals and defense, Let's take a look at some key players that will help the Whalers take that next step.
Aaron Noxus - Last seasons leading goal scorer for Vancouver is back in his sophomore year and looking to keep his team scoring title. Last season he fell 9 short of making the top 10 goal scorers in the league so he'll need to take a big step forward if he hopes to be the light in the Whalers locker room and turn this into a competitive team. Trent Mackenzie - Let's talk about an unshakeable will. Let's talk about the heart, soul and backbone of the team. Leading the league in saves, and games played, she still managed to not be in the top 10 of goals against average. Facing more shots than any other goalie in the league you can definitely say there is no where to go but up for this seemingly untiring netminder. If the team can step up and provide her the proper support on the ice, we may be looking at the next greatest to ever do it. Hans Gronlund - Rounding out the trio of last seasons rookies, Hans didn't make any of the top 10 lists for statistics last season but he is fully aware that it is not his job. As a pure defensive defensemen, he will be Trent's number one support and do everything he can to relieve as much pressure in the defensive end possible. To take the step forward this year he will need to work on one of the leagues worse +/- numbers of last season. Not entirely his fault as it was a big transition year for Vancouver but his focus and skill have only improved and we should see that drop drastically if Vancouver's plans pull through. |
