Weston would be an odd pick for a movie, but if he did get selected, he would actually lean away from advising from having a lot of realism in the on-ice product. While that can make for a good movie, if you're having real hockey players make cameos, you're probably going for something a little less historical and a little more comical. With that in mind, he would argue that the thing you have to highlight the most is the chippiness and 'chirping' culture of hockey, as it's what sets it most apart from other sports to a mainstream American audience. As long as you get the basics past that, skating and shooting and the right kind of equipment (ideally old-style equipment, for a sort of hockey period piece), most viewers will accept it -- and if you get that feeling of hockey culture right, so will hockey fans. Other than that, the main thing Weston would be trying to get right would be the locker room scenes: the part that fans don't get to see, but that easily resonates with anyone who's played even school sports before. With that in mind, he'd want his cameo to be as something akin to an assistant coach, team doctor, or otherwise: someone who can be present for those key scenes. |
