My first season in the SMJHL with the Vancouver Whalers was definitely a whirlwind experience. I’d say my performance was solid, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t left wanting more. 41 points in 66 games as a rookie is respectable, and it felt great to contribute to the team especially late in the season when I started producing more, but when you grow up hearing about your father’s incredible rookie season—30 goals, 39 assists, 69 points—it’s hard not to compare yourself. I know it’s not fair to stack my journey against his, but it’s definitely been a motivator to push myself harder.
Individually, I think I met some of the expectations I had for myself, but I know I can do better. The biggest area I need to improve is my offensive game. Puckhandling is a major focus for me in the offseason—I need to have more confidence with the puck in tight situations and create more chances under pressure. I’ve also been working on my balance and agility. I noticed how much faster the game is at this level, and I want to be able to make sharper turns, hold my ground better, and be more elusive on the ice. As for glorious moments, there are two that stand out. Scoring my first goal was unforgettable—it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, and seeing my teammates celebrate with me was a moment I’ll never forget. The other highlight was my first hat trick. That night, everything seemed to click, and it felt like all the hard work was paying off. It gave me a taste of what I’m capable of, and I want more of that next season. I know the road ahead won’t be easy, but I’m excited to keep growing and to help this team in an even bigger way next year. There’s no better feeling than knowing I have room to improve and the drive to make it happen. ![]() Say his name and he appears!
