Rookie Hazing in Montreal

Hazing anywhere is frowned upon. This mentality is sometimes seen as a gray area in the sporting world, but not in Montreal. It is common for veterans to tease or initiate rookies into their circle. It builds relationships, and if done in a harmless way, creates good fun all around. Obviously, situations can be taken too far, but if the veteran group is mature, things will stay under control for the most part. In the SHL, certain rookie rituals are commonplace in the locker room and on the road.
After being signed, Karl was invited out to dinner. It wasn't pretty, Karl's rookie dinner bill came to $10,000, $3,500 of which he was expected to pay for. Obviously Karl did not buy all of this food himself. Impact veterans took the liberty to buy the best and most expensive food on the menu. This type of situation is common around the sporting world. Most rookies are told to save that first pay check, so they are not stuck when their teammates decide they want a free meal.. After that Karl was with mixed emotions and decided to just go to the hotel and rest up.. A group of veterans led by Buddy Thomas decided to do some decorating of his hotel room. Thomas and company took all of the rookies' hotel room furnishings out of their rooms and into the hallway. They even arranged the furnishings in the same orientation of the room. This type of hazing is playful and with good intentions. It is also very funny, and Karl thought so as well as JNH feeling sorry for the rookie decided to help him put the furniture back into his hotel room. In the morning, thing got even worse for the rookie, but he smiled through it all. Feeny decided he would be chauffeured by Karl Jenkins to a public practice. Karl even opened Feeny's door and wore a chauffeur hat. This is another example of how rookie hazing does not have to be as malicious as most of the incidents heard about on the news. With the right group of veterans hazing, it can be what it is meant to be, fun and harmless. In practice, it was the worst it possibly could have been.. Forced to go out on the ice with only his skates.. ONLY his skates and his stick, no jersey, no under armour, no equipment.. no jock. He had to skate around the ice for four laps and then decided to head back into the dressing room, but motivational coach Raymond decided it was not to be and ordered him to be sentenced to having himself taped nude to the goal post and having shots being fired at him. No one hit him off course, but this was on rookie hazing even Karl couldn't smile through.. It is reported he was heard all the way to Toronto, cursing. JNH even offered him a bar of soap for his cussing. After, practice had really begun, Karl got his revenge, pounding Thomas into the boards in good nature and scoring a hat trick and then cellying it all the way to the dressing rooms. Karl enjoyed a few of these hazings, the last one was too far, but it lit a fire under his ass.. and that was what he needed. These veterans at Montreal are pretty darn smart. |
