One of the ideas is that for a developmental league that having to sit out the playoffs could potentially murder activity/interest in the league. Plus having more games in the playoffs for the SMJHL is a generally good idea.

The team that wins the conference still plays the worst in the conference which should infer an edge.

Good call. Completely agree with this, it's a juniors league giving everyone a chance means that everyone's involved in the playoffs for their first season.
