S58 PT #4 Redesigning the Rink

The more extreme version of the SHL would be having a long track in between the two goals of the ice. Similar to skate cross the players must navigate on narrow and steep falls and turns to get the puck to the other net in order to score. On each side of the ice there are large ramps to scale for the player to be able to pick up enough speed to travel to the other side, but the track is also filled with the opposing team trying to stop your progress. In order to be able to implement these changes for the league, there was a lot of discussions between the team doctors and the league officials which resulted in a change in the roster composition of teams. It was identified that the new system of play has a slightly higher injury risk and in order to allow a game to continue if worst comes to worst, more players needs to be on deck to replace their injured teammates.

In order to stand out from the NHL or any other sports league for that matter, the SHL has decided to not only allow steroids and performance enhancing drugs, but encourage them for every player. The plan is to create a league filled with a bunch of roided out mutants. With players so strong and roided out, with their normal human bodied being altered by the drugs they are taking, the league will be an absolute spectacle for the world. In all other professional sports leagues, regardless of what sport, performance enhancing drugs are greatly frowned upon and are against the rules, resulting in suspensions if caught being used. We can see this in affect with the likes of Barry Bonds, one of if not the greatest baseball player of all time being denied entry into the hall of fame because of steroids. My question is, who cares? The SHL feels the same way and now will be marketing themselves as the wild west of sports

I think it would be best that, if the SHL were picked up by a network, we adopted the burgeoning "Fan Controlled Football" model. The fans, which are clearly by the looks of the Twitch and YouTube chat during sims much better at managing games than the GMs are, would be able to immediately call out strategies the players would use in real time. At the result of a straw poll with each shift (yes, causing a brief pause in the action, but that's fine for the fans), the strategy, roles, and gameplan for the next 30 seconds to a minute would change.

Another thing that would be useful would be substituting the puck with an object of the losing team's choice should they be losing by 4 or more goals. This would make practice for players on bad teams more interesting, as they can become adept with some sort of object that is unbeknownst to the opposing team. You could substitute something puck-like, such as a tennis ball, or a basketball. Of course if you substitute the ball from another sport in there, it makes sense that all of those rules come with the ball - so dribbling across the ice and using one's stick as a weapon would not only be in play, but very much encouraged.

We all love hockey, it’s a great sport with lots of subtlety and nuance. There is also fighting. I think our extreme sport of hockey needs more fighting. So, the ring is getting an octagon put in the center of the ring, around the faceoff circle. MMA style cage, although the ground is still ice. The reasons for this ring are twofold. First of all, no more faceoffs. Drop the gloves, full fist fight between the centers. First person to hit the ice loses and the other team gets the puck. But let’s kick it up another notch. Scoring goals is a crucial part of hockey and one that requires a lot of finesse and skill. Sniper players don’t tend to be the most physically inclined people. Well, in this sport they will be. Because if you score a goal, the other team has the chance to make it not count. You, the goal scorer, drop the gloves and fight whoever on the other team is playing in your position (RWs fight RWs, C fight C, etc.). If the team that got scored on wins the fight, the goal is taken off the board. If the person who scored wins, their goal counts.

Well coming in here I could just make the statement that dialing the rules back to an 80s or early 90s level of physicality would be enough, that seems too easy. Sure head hunting was normalized, and nobody had seen a Hatcher incident before, but that should make little difference. The old days of bench clearing and regular line brawls. It was a crazy time. Sure things might have changed for the better now I guess.

Hell another way one could go is just have the refereeing be playoff style all year round. Whistles largely swallowed, where team's styles could come out and play their way. It would be a hard dance as the league would go back to policing the game by the players themselves in a wild set of showdowns. Truth be told, there are a million more exotic ways to make hockey more dangerous and exciting. But sometimes, simplicity stands out.

First of all, NHL is second fiddle to the SHL. But if someone wants us to become more extreme the only option is that when there is a fight we must have weapons. These may be very dangerous weapons or they might be a rubber chicken verses someone with a jump rope. What makes stuff like XFL or Slamball work or the gimmicks. Its not just one or two but they by into the whole thing. Along with fights we are going to Mic up every athlete so that we can hear their conversations on the ice. Hockey players will cut promos vs. the other teams during the breaks between periods. Even while focusing on the gimmicks and theatrics we wont do anything to effect the actual hockey as we all know the SHL has the greatest hockey players on earth and compromising the level of play just to get a TV contract would not be in the best interest of the league.

Honestly, the first thing i though when i read the prompt was to change the hockey stick. What change would i make on the simulation hockey league sticks in order to make it more extreme? the blade of the stick is an actual blade. That's what i call extreme when you could get actually slashed on the ice. Of course the players would probably have to add some kind of extra protection and play with a cage, but that would be interesting to watch. There would probably be some grandfathering rules like the current visors where some players will absolutely refuse to play with a cage or with specific equipment which will make this even more exciting. Imagine a super star like Monkey D. Luffy refusing to wear a cage and risk getting slashed every time on the ice. That would be insane to watch, since there will be actual risk on health of some players.

Welcome to the ISHL, the brand new version of the SHL with a bit of INSANITY. What makes it insanity now? Well, we have four goals on the ice, with the players increased to 7 per team. That means you can chose to have two goalies, or if you pulled them, up to 7 players going for the goals on the other side of the ice. Now it doesn't seem to crazy other than having one goalie do nothing while the other gets slammed by the puck, but here is the kicker. FANS CAN IMPACT THE GAME. The fans in the stands and fans watching can use an app to put 2 inch barriers up around the ice. These little barriers will keep players from skating over the top of them without jumping, and players will have to get the puck over the top in the process. Players will be tripped, the puck will be lost, and goals will be scored. Higher scoring is the idea, with a touch of INSANITY.

I like the old school style of wearing no helmet on the ice. I think with the characters we have in the league, we would have some cool bowls of lettuce and some crazy haircuts to really attract the viewers and make the league unique and have good TV ratings. At the same time, I think teams would do something crazy like all paint their heads/hair with their respective team colors. So the Calgary Dragons would all have their hair dyed Red and even have some Calgary Dragon tattoos in the side of their heads or maybe even on their neck to make it look like we are some crazy people.
Bringing back the CooperAlls would also be a crazy addition to the league and would be good for branding ideas and some advertisements on the jerseys for some more league revenue. Being that we are a smaller league, I think any added way to make money would be great for the league and for the exposure of the league. The old style Cooper Alls would give every team the chance to really design their own look and have more space for advertisements from companies.

With the glut of goaltenders currently in the SHL they have decided to go bold in an effort to get a more lucrative TV deal. So there will now be 2 goals at each end to be defended and each team will have 2 goaltenders on the ice at the same time. This should promote some very exciting play for the fans and some serious nightmares for the defense. Cross ice passing takes on a new meaning and powerplays will become extremely difficult to defend as it will so almost impossible to determine which goal is going to be shot upon. Also another strategy element is if you have a tremendously athletic goaltender, he could cover both goals at once for an extra attacker so there could be some very unique strategies at work. Obviously scoring will go up which is what the fans and the networks really want so it should make for an exciting change.

Everybody loves slides, so that's clearly the way to go. You'll have multiple loops in and out of the rink where players will enter, get off the ice and make changes on the fly. It'll make for some in depth strategies as to how players exit, and enter the ice , guarding certain slides to prevent teams from executing their strategies and otherwise. To make more competitive angles, some slides may also randomly open or close at certain times, making so that those who have great anticipation skills will be able to get into a place of success by recognizing telltale signs.

And for something like the all star games, fans might be also able to vote and control these slides, how they changed and the direction they go in the middle of the game. This will increase fan interest as they are able to affect the outcome of games. Betting systems will also go wild not with just the game results but also the kinds of slides taken etc. Heat maps will be created for the most popular spots and the most effective areas.

I suggest two small and very simple changes to make the TV executives happy: No more sticks, and kicking the puck into the goal is now allowed! Imagine soccer on ice. But we keep the knifes attached to the players feet.

This will make the game more exciting, or extreme, in multiple ways. The obvious one is that player can no longer shoot the puck with a stick but instead have to kick the puck into the net. No longer will we see players patiently stand back and skate along their opponent just holding their stick out. No, now players will have to make body contact any time they want to get the puck. Hit numbers will go through the roof! And don't forget the absolute madness that will happen in front of the nets each time a puck gets into the goalie crease. 5+ players plus the goalie throwing themselves at the puck and/or kicking their skates around wildly trying to score. It'll be terrifyingly dangerous and exciting at the same time!

Past Players

Well, I mean the game is played on ice so it makes sense to do it on an ice rink that is outside and underneath the ice there are SHARKS, real dangerous sharks and the ice is very thin so a few times per game, a couple people fall into the ice and you have to then escape again and get out and escape the sharks. Sometimes maybe some people might not make it back out. And also the game would be more exciting since then you would have to pay attention to the holes in the ice and so the game would be like a sort of cheese where there are holes you have to avoid in order to get to the opposing goal. You really have to make sure not to break a whole line because otherwise you will never get ahead anymore unless you swam through somehow or shot the puck over it.

Welcome back to the Knightly News. Today we’re looking into a new type of hockey. Extreme Hockey! Also known as X-Hockey! If you thought hockey was rough and tough wait until you see X-Hockey. Why the X- well that’s because this is hockey mixed with the X games. We have now expanded the rink and added ramps and obstacles the players must maneuver around while playing. In addition we have added power ups that teams can acquire through fan support and through and underdog system when a team is down by two or more goals. We expect X-Hockey to be filled with tons of action and X-treme gameplay. And with the addition of fan support this allows the fans to directly assist their team in the game. As if they were on the ice playing for them. The wraps should add for additional playmaking potential and increase the level of crazy goals we see this season. So we look forward to trying this type of hockey in the juniors before bringing it up but be on the look out for X-Hockey to be coming to a rink near you!!
