 Task 5:

Honestly this battle does seem a bit unfair to the herd of buffalo if the buffalo is just gonna be normal everyday buffalo. Even if bears and buffalo are both incredibly powerful animals (though I do think that a normal bear would kill a normal buffalo in a fair fight), the bear having God like abilities does make this fight kinda lopsided. So let's just say that the herd of buffalo are giant buffalo but nothing else about them has changed. While I do think that in most scenarios, the bear would win, as it has god like abilities, maybe enough buffalo can overthrow the bear with sheer numbers alone. However, I think this fight would start with the bear ripping apart the buffalo as they try to get in some damage to the bear, but the bear would stagger a bit to the buffalo's numbers.

However I do think that the beer would defeat the buffalo in the end, as it is very hard to kill a god bear, even if you are many giant buffalo.

a. Winnipeg has put together an impressive streak of Challenge Cup Finals appearances, but has no hardware to show for their dominance in the west so far. What do the Aurora have to do differently to get over the hump this year?

They need to figure out where their weaknesses are. I believe they are so offensively built that they can get away with running and gunning. But to an extent. The west has been worse overall than the east for a while now, and that is still in place. They can get away with the high powered offense with little emphasis on the d, but when the best of the east rears their heads, that strategy seems to not hold water.

I’m a firm believer in Buffalo. I think they can mark the rebuild complete and continue to enjoy their time in the light. That isn’t to say they can just back off, but they can potentially focus on trading out later picks for a potential jump in the first round and keep that prospect farm well stocked with high quality players.

To say Winnipeg has been offensively dominant in their playoff run so far is needlessly charitable to their opponents. Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson has *twenty nine points* in sixteen playoff games. Mikko Rashford has *twenty seven*. However, Rebecca Montaigne has a 0.888 save percentage for this run. Can Winnipeg's absurd offense finally get them over the hump, or do they need to patch up their defense if they want to outlast the Upstate Upstarts?

The biggest problem with Winnipeg’s plan is they get to essentially cruise right through to the finals. No knock to them, 3 in a row finals appearances is outstanding and should be recognized. The problem is they skate through the series without any serious competition. They are so much better on paper than any competition from the East. Adding on to that, if they run through the conference finals very quickly they risk going flat in the finals, which I’m sure no one on their team or any of their fans want to see.
Winnipeg needs to sort out their defense. Why is their goaltending so poorly when in the regular season they have one of the better d / goaltending groups. Do they need to pull back some of their high octane forwards? Are they letting up too many good chances? They need to figure out what to tweak, because they need to solve this issue. If they lose this series they are going to risk a riot back home.

d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why?

a. I don't think that Winnipeg really has to change much. They've been a consistently incredible team in this league and they really peaked this season by being far and away the best team in the entire league through the regular season. They've been unlucky the last few seasons, but they just need to stick to their game and eventually it'll bounce their way. (63 words)
b. I'm not sold on Buffalo at all because the TPE usually doesn't lie. Buffalo is one of the lowest TPE teams in the playoffs this season. In fact they're in the 7th to 9th range and should be a fringe team at best. Sometimes luck rolls your way though and they'll need a ton of that to get through a much better Winnipeg team. If we've learned anything from the reign of terror that Willie Miller has brought to the league, it is that defense is absolutely essential to the success of any time. Winnipeg's stars have been outstanding and they have been absolutely running over the opposition. The only team that has even come close to containing them is Chicago in these playoffs. That said Chicago took them to a close game seven and really pushed Winnipeg to the brink. If it wasn't for a dumb mistake that made the game a 3v5 to end the third period in game seven, we might not be having this conversation. As such it shows that this offense can be slowed and all the need to be is slowed to make this team beatable with how their defense has been playing. If they don't find some consistency in keeping the puck out of their own net, no amount of offense is going to bring that cup home. (161 Words)

3. well, since we know the outcome of this already im gonna go with “yes”. while a high powered offense is great to have, its not always going to get you through every team. teams with an adequate defense have an advantage of being able to use different strategies that can possibly shutdown an offense no matter how potent they are. all they have to do at that point is be able to score one more goal than the offense they are focused on stopping. seeing what happened in these finals, winnipeg may have wanted to bolster their defense when they had a chance before entering the playoffs. they were able to use their high powered offense to take the first two games in the series but buffalo must have caught on. im assuming they changed up their look because buffalo then went on to take four games straight and win the cup. i think that just goes to show that you have more options when you can rely on different aspects of your game and arent so one dimensional.

I'll talk about this one for WPG moving forward as the finals are over and we know the results. Obviously, it wasn't enough this season and I truly am not sure that it would be enough any season. Having great offense is obviously a very important factor in winning games and making it deep in the playoffs. They wouldn't have made it 3 times in a row otherwise. But there's a bare minimum in goaltending standards that really needs to be met to turn a good team into a great team. Right now WPG is obviously a very very good team. They are so close to being a great team even. but 0.88 isn't just below average, it's outright not acceptable on a team that's trying to make that extra push. Moving forward, if they want to have a different fate than they had this season, it will be very important for them to find a way to get Montaigne going the way fans know they're able to. if we had even just 0.1-0.15 better save percentage I think things would look drastically different for Winnipeg.

It's hard to say I'm completely convinced about buffalo, even after they've won the cup. That said I'd be lying if I said they didn't make the biggest statement they possibly could to the rest of the league. The real test for them now is going to be trying to string together a few solid post season performances in a row, and maybe even another cup.

Quote:c. Two very different teams took two very different routes to the Cup Final: which of them impressed you more? Why?

I think Winnipeg has been extremely impressive and not just for their record and post season performance this season. They've been this good for a long time now and if it keeps up you have to imagine they'll break through the barrier one day. They've managed their assets extremely well and are definitely giving themselves every chance to do so.

Continuing an emergent tradition: this year's final features a god-bear
of cosmic wind facing an unfamiliar rival on a familiar battleground:
this year, the great glowing north faces a furious herd of buffalo! Tell

In the heart of the untamed wilderness, a majestic glowing bear god named Zephyr ruled over the domain of wind. His luminescent fur shimmered with the ethereal colors of the breeze, and with each step, gusts of air swirled around him. One fateful day, a furious herd of buffaloes charged into his territory, their thundering hooves shaking the ground.

Zephyr, master of wind, possessed the ability to summon tempests at will. His roars unleashed cyclones, tearing through the air and scattering his enemies. As the buffaloes stampeded, Zephyr conjured swirling tornadoes that lifted them off their feet, momentarily halting their charge. The furious buffaloes, however, were not to be underestimated. Each member of the herd possessed immense strength and sturdy horns. Their unified determination echoed through the plains, shaking the very foundations of nature.  In the clash between the bear god and the buffalo herd, Zephyr unleashed powerful gusts, creating a wall of wind that shielded him from their relentless charges. The buffaloes, relentless and unyielding, launched themselves at Zephyr with unbridled fury. With a mighty sweep of his paw, Zephyr summoned a mighty whirlwind, sweeping through the buffalo ranks and scattering them in all directions. But the buffaloes fought back, their collective strength nearly matching the bear god's powers.

In a final act of defiance, Zephyr stood tall, drawing upon the might of the wind itself. He summoned a colossal tornado, pulling the buffaloes into its vortex, tossing them about like mere leaves. The raw power of the wind overwhelmed the furious herd, scattering them to the far reaches of the wilderness. As the dust settled, Zephyr stood triumphant, his radiant presence calming the once-frenzied winds. The land exhaled a collective sigh of relief, grateful for the bear god's protection. The tale of Zephyr's battle against the furious herd of buffaloes echoed throughout the ages, a testament to the indomitable power of the glowing bear god of wind.

In a surprising twist, the great god-bear of cosmic wind faces a fierce herd of buffalo on the icy battleground. Having lost three battles in a row, doubts surround the god-bear's invincibility. The arena is adorned with ice sculptures and swirling snowflakes, setting the stage for an epic showdown. Undeterred by the god-bear's reputation, the furious buffalo charge with unwavering determination. Their thunderous hooves create tremors, reflecting their relentless spirit. Coordinated and unyielding, they strike with precision, exploiting the god-bear's fatigue and waning confidence. Despite the god-bear's attempts to summon tempestuous gusts and cosmic shockwaves, its powers falter. The buffalo's sheer numbers and coordinated attacks overwhelm the struggling god-bear, their powerful horns piercing its defenses. In a stunning upset, the buffalo emerge victorious, ending the god-bear's winning streak. The once-revered champion is humbled by their unwavering strength. The battleground echoes with triumphant buffalo roars, marking the rise of a new legend in the great glowing north. The buffalo's tenacity and strategic prowess etch their name in the annals of mythical battles, proving that even the mightiest can fall.

Answer: +2 TPE
In a thrilling hockey showdown, the Buffalo Stampede faced off against the Winnipeg Aurora, emerging victorious to claim the coveted cup. The Stampede's defense proved to be a formidable force, showcasing their skill and determination throughout the series. In particular, their goalie, Fantobens, delivered a remarkable performance, boasting an impressive .902 save percentage across the team's four wins. Meanwhile, the Stampede's offense displayed a relentless drive, consistently finding the back of the net when it mattered most. Led by their dynamic lineup, including standout players like Wing, Lakemore, Murphy, Selich, and Kekkonen, the team's three lines synergized seamlessly to create scoring opportunities and generate crucial goals throughout the intense matches. The Stampede's collective effort, combining the exceptional defensive prowess of Fantobens with the offensive contributions of their skilled players across all lines, proved to be the winning formula. Their spectacular display of teamwork and individual talent propelled them to victory, securing the cup and etching their names in hockey history.

How does your player feel about playing against SHL teammates in the IIHF? Do you ease up on your hits, or do you go harder? Do you grin at each other across the ice, or is this a point of national pride?

Jack St. Clair loves playing in international tournaments because of the opportunity to play against teammates. His fellow Edmonton Blizzards are some of the best in the world and its fun to go up against them in a competitive environment. Practice and scrimmages are fun and all, but when there is something like national pride and a gold medal on the line, things get amped up a notch and thats where the fun begins! St. Clair brings it just as hard in IIHF competitions as he does in SHL preseason games and it doesn’t matter who lines up on the other side. It could be his best friend or a linemate, he is still going to hit him as hard as legally can. While never actively trying to embarrass anybody, Jack St. Clair likes to showcase his speed and talent and when he knows a teammate is on the ice, he will attack them with the puck to get around them an earn some bragging rights. At the end of the day though, it is all grins and beers.

Congratulations to the Buffalo Stampede on winning the Challenge Cup! It looked like their luck had run out when the Winnipeg Aurora jumped out to a rather convincing two game series lead. Not to be deterred though Buffalo came up with the right strategy to shut down the Aurora's offense and got a little help from their own offensive weapons to seal to win the next four games. Its a tough loss for Winnipeg, they really looked like they couldn't be stopped, and they were just going to score their way to the cup. However, they ran into a hot Fantobens who had dominated all the way up to this point and the Aurora just weren’t able to solve him. I don't know what they could have done differently.

This kind of seems to be the trend with the Winnipeg Aurora these last few seasons. They are offensively dominant, and the likes of Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson, Mikko Rashford, and now Noel Blanchet are a big reason why, but there goaltending has always been suspect. This season Rebecca Montagne had 41 wins, the most in the league, but her save percentage was average at best with 0.900 and her game rating was even worse with a 69. By comparison the top goalies are above 0.910 save percentage and 75 game rating. On the flip side the SHL is a strange beast and the goalies that get shelled tend to look better in big stats like save% and GSAA. That being said she is clearly the weak link is this otherwise juggernaut of a team. Can their offense overcome it? Definitely, but it would be much easier if she brought league average goaltending to the team. Maybe they even 3 in a row instead of losing 3 in a row. Tough to win if your goalie is sub 0.900.

Buffalo hasn't put up the same offensive numbers as the Aurora, but they haven't needed to. Their points leader in Konstantin Selich has 19 points in 16 playoff games, an impressive number in its own right, but the Stampede's hero has been Casey Fantobens, their brick wall with a casual *0.929* save percentage over the playoffs so far. In a battle of unbelievable offense vs the stoutest playoff defense this league has seen in a while, does Buffalo have what it takes to bring home the trophy and send the Aurora back to Winnipeg yet again?
It's been a minute since I've seen the Buffalo Stampede in the finals. They were a perennial contender for most of 50's and 60's, but naturally fell off when their core aged out. While 19 points in 16 games is certainly nothing to scoff at I agree it's a far cry from the 29 and 27 Lias and Mikko put up in just as many games for the Aurora. The difference here though is the goaltending and it's a stark one. Rebecca has struggled at times and is well insulated by Winnipeg's high flying offense, meanwhile Fantobens has had to do the lion's share of the work during the regular season and again the playoffs through the first 3 rounds. In a battle of offense versus defense I typically pick offense in the SHL, but I wouldn't be shocked if Buffalo squeezed out a win here. And since I'm writing this late it looks like they did just that. Hard not to pick Fantobens as the MVP for this one.

2a. Winnipeg has put together an impressive streak of Challenge Cup Finals appearances, but has no hardware to show for their dominance in the west so far. What do the Aurora have to do differently to get over the hump this year?

I think what they have to do differently is win four games. It’s hard to win a cup in this league as it is, and it’s even harder when you don’t win four games in the finals. I have a lot of friends on that team, so despite them being in our division I do hope they get it done this year.

b. Buffalo, fresh off a rebuild, crushed their way through the first two rounds of these playoffs after coming in as a wildcard, scoring two consecutive sweeps against two of the best teams in the East. Have the Stampede convinced you? If so, what sold you?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since coming back to the site during season 46, it’s that you absolutely cannot ever count out the Buffalo Stampede. They’re a team that seem to be on the way out and then all of a sudden they’re in the cup finals and beating the consensus favourites. Plus they have Harrington and his pretty hair.

c. Two very different teams took two very different routes to the Cup Final: which of them impressed you more? Why?

I think Winnipeg’s because it was just utter dominance offensively and they had to battle. A hot goalie is a hot goalie, but having the skill to pick your tendy up when they’re struggling is a tough task. If their goalie can improve and positively regresses here in the finals then I think that they will be in a real good spot to take home the cup.

d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why?

I’ve got Winnipeg winning it all, as I’ve kind of alluded to throughout my answers already. On top of them having a number of my close friends on the team which leads to me naturally cheering for them, when a teams been this close to success you want them to reach it. It’s not fun to see them suffer year after year and they’ve absolutely put in the work they needed to do it would be a much deserved accomplishment.

2. a. The Aurora have been a dominant force in the SHL for a few seasons now, it is so surprising that they haven't gotten over the hump. This season, they'll need to be at the top of their game in order to change the ending. The upstart Buffalo Stampede have a lot to say about that. On paper, the Aurora are still the stronger squad, but Buffalo has proven so far that paper does not always equal truth. They may need to adjust their gameplan early, because the Stampede's other opponents have not been ready for them. Who's to say this will be any different? (1 TPE)

d. This may sound crazy, but it ain't broke and I'm not fixing it. Whatever the Stampede are doing is clearly working and there is really no reason to believe their success will come to an end. I think they will be able to topple the Aurora, continuing their string of impressive updates. If only there was a casino to place a bet in now, I'd surely take it. Wonder what the plus money line would be on that outcome. But book it anyway, Buffalo for the cup! (1 TPE)

3. Watch out for the Upstate Upstarts! I have to say, I'm loving that moniker. Not to mention I'm enjoying the hell out of this run while I'm still in the SMJHL. They can have this run, but when I get up here it is OVER. Anyways, I digress. The Winnipeg Aurora have been dominant and been rolling through the league... again. So what can slow them down? This pesky team from just south of the Canadian border, thats who. Buffalo has a really tall task ahead of them, shutting down Winnipeg's elite offense is a massive chore, and I'm not sure if they are up to it, but hey, we didnt think any of the rest of these upsets would happen. Who's to say this is any different? I think Buffalo will find a way to expose the massive hole in the Winnipeg lineup, backend defense and goaltending. An .880 save percentage is far less than desirable, especially for a finals team. If they continue to let goals in like that, then all it takes is one cold snap for the offense and they could easily find themselves in a series deficit. If they want to win, they will need the most out of their offensive players and a patched up goaltending performance to carry them over the hump. I'm still thinking Buffalo takes this. (3 TPE)

b. Buffalo, fresh off a rebuild, crushed their way through the first two rounds of these playoffs after coming in as a wildcard, scoring two consecutive sweeps against two of the best teams in the East. Have the Stampede convinced you? If so, what sold you?
c. Two very different teams took two very different routes to the Cup Final: which of them impressed you more? Why?

b. Buffalo has flex's player and flex is unstoppable so I know wherever they go, as long as they have flex, there is a good chance they defy odds and overcome whatever is trying to stop them. That's the flex power. But also they've got a GM and management squad that's been around for a while and have won before.

c. Honestly impressed by both teams. You've got Winnipeg which is a powerhouse full of S62s and S63s, and Buffalo that has a history of doing well and has some old faces from previous wins. It was rather an exciting final with Buffalo being a surprising face there, and I would have been happy with either winning the cup.
