Hockey, and really sports in general, are meant to be fun. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of other means of entertainment out there for kids to choose these days, there is still no reason that little Jimmy and little Susie can’t find their way to the game that we all love. So, while I have been asked to put together a program to get kids learning about the game, I’m not going to go out of my way to do things that are outlandish just to get the kids through the door. Passion for the sport will happen pretty naturally for the kids that love the game. We will reward those kids with top flight instruction throughout their time in the program and reward them for continued success through opportunities to continue to come back and work for the school as coaches for financial incentive. Forcing kids who don’t want to learn the game to do so, is just going to lead to burnout. Let the kids choose their path and decide they want to join the school to learn more about hockey. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll just have to buy more candy.

PLAYER PROMPT

DAD's hockey journey began when he was only 3 years old, when his grandpa gave him his very first pair of skates and his first hockey stick. The skates were old, dusty and the blade was a bit rusty, but DAD felt in love with this gift. He had eyes only for the skates and the stick. Once DAD's grandpa brought him to the local rink, the only thing he wanted to do is to play hockey. This is the exact moment when DAD found his passion and he was already good at it. He was always better than all his nursery friends. DAD's father taught that hockey would be what he's best at. He decided. that the majority of his savings would go hockey schools for DAD. He invested not only money, but also most of his time to train DAD and make sure that fay after day, DAD would be better than yesterday. At the age of 10, DAD was invited to a AAA U12 camp. He totally crushed everybody with his speed, agility, strength and shooting skills. He was better than every single 12 years old kid who was at the same camp as him. It was from that moment that DAD's father knew he would become of the best Finnish hockey player of all-time and he sacrificed everything to make sure that DAD would be the player he is today.

Written Task: What kind of fun and exciting activities do you plan for your hockey school? What skills and lessons do you want the kids to take home with them? How do you structure the whole experience? What does it cost, if anything? Is this a hardcore hockey skills experience, or something that's just meant to be a fun opportunity to meet an SHL player? (150+ words)

Paul Koivu always wanted to have his own school of hockey, because he did not have quite that opportunity when he was young, his family being so big his parents were not able to afford a hockey school for their kids. So Paul would make a summer camp of a couple weeks, and it would be very cheap, only 100 dollars, the rest Paul will pay. The parents do not even need to provide the equipment, Paul Koivu's sponsors will provide them for free. In the schools, the students do drills in the morning where they re learn the basics of hockey. For Paul, you never learn the basics too often, it is important to have a solid base to build on top of it, a lot of players who struggle to make it in the big leagues do not make it because they have not mastered the basics well enough. Then in the afternoon, they play games against each other, Paul scrambles the teams every day so that the students learn to play with different people everyday and adapt to different teammates.

Player Prompt

My player got started in hockey pretty late actually in life. Newman focused a lot on baseball, basketball, and football to start, playing a lot in travel ball and pee-wee leagues before realizing that he wasn’t cut out for those sports. Then all of a sudden in high school he stepped onto an ice rink and instantly loved it. He saw some SHL legends and they all loved his skating so they went over to him and offered to teach him some lessons. It didn’t take a very long time for him to get used to hockey, which surprised him since he literally stepped foot on an ice rink for the first time like a couple of hours ago. From that, Newman realized a talent for hockey that he had never realized before. From that point onwards, he devoted his life to hockey and now he is blossoming in the junior league, hoping to get a callup to the majors fairly soon.

Player prompt:

Being from Latvia, Ozolins wasn’t in one of the more conventional hockey markets, which are Scandinavian countries, Russia and North America. He discovered hockey at later than most players, at around 8 years, but soon he showed off skills that no one could replicate due to an intense training from his best friend’s dad, a former Latvian hockey star. He learned him the whereabouts of hockey on ice in a matter of weeks. Eventually, he started watching the SHL, and began dreaming about joining one of those North American teams and play his favorite sport for a living. Eventually, he had to move to Canada as he was recruited by a SMJHL team, the Maine Timber. Ozolins chose to live in Edmonton as he loved the place and secretly dreamt of playing for the iconic franchise playing there. And when the dust settled and the S69 SHL draft happened, Edžus was a new prospect of the Blizzard.

CREATIVE PROMPT

Kaapo Kampainen has always been known to give back to his community during the offseason between the SHL playoffs and the IIHF tournament and that, of course, includes his world famous hockey camps for children. Kaapo always makes an effort to welcome kids from everywhere in the world to his camp, to ensure this is a global experience. People from all over the world apply to the free camp, and only a few are carefully selected based on the quality of their application. It's important for Kaapo that not only the richest family can afford it, so it's free, and he wanted to make sure everyone has the same chance to get in. Kaapo has always been a good passer, so he offers classes dedicated to the analyse of game tapes so he can give pointers. He also gives kids an immersive experience where to get thrown into a simulated, real-time situation in VR and they have to make the right decision. He also offers the classic on-ice drills to improve the hockey IQ and the defensive stickcheck. All in all, it's an amazing experience for kids and Kaapo !

The Pablo Salvatici hockey camp for Atlanta school kids is a new program that Pablo is choosing to start in order to get this new generation of kids excited and happy and motivated for exercise and sports and hockey and other similar activities that get the blood flowing and pumping hard. This program is meant to teach about fitness and a healthy diet and leadership and friendship. This cost for this program will come from Pablo’s deep deep pockets because he has made lots of money and wants to give back to the community because he loves the community and the people and the city. It will be held at schools around Atlanta and led by Pablo and his fellow Atlanta inferno teammates such as binko big man koivu @goldenglues and Phillip eko eel the piss man himself @hotdog because they also love the community and can’t wait to help give back as well. All in all Pablo wants to emphasize hard work and a healthy lifestyle so the kids these days will be better equipped for the future.

When it comes to getting kids engaged in hockey, you have to give them some instant gratification.  So much of hockey and high level athletics as a whole is all about the long game, putting in hours upon hours of work, and more of a marathon.  Instead, we'll break everything up into easily digestible chunks and make each one of them a competition.  First, we'll have skating races, both short and long track.  That way they can learn how to skate, while also building up stats from all their race times.  We'll also work on shooting, but provide a number of bonus points for where in the net they land the puck. With those bonus points, they can buy things like custom sticks, extra decals on their gear, or a personalized logo, much like making a skin in a video game. We'll also grill them on trivia of hockey itself, the entire SHL, and all the history therein.  Yet another area where they not only get instant gratification, but can keep up with their scores to compare with their friends, much like an online video game.

Bohdan ran learn to skate with other team mates for a while. Was super fun, but if he was to transition into a hockey school it would definitely just be a fun learning experience. It wouldn't be a super serious level school, but definitely would have skills taught. Mainly focusing on skating, and shooting. Some activities that are fun would include keep away, and one on one battles in the corner.(You turn the goal to face towards the corner and dump a puck in each side. Both players race to puck and grind it out to get a shot.) Another fun activity is having a skills competition at the start and end of the year. It is a fun way to see how the player has progressed throughout the summer. Hockey is meant to be fun and inclusive. So the camp would also be affordable. Bohdan makes enough money as is, and doesn't need to profit from this camp. Consider it one of the ways they give back

Creative Prompt - I would like to invite the youth masses to my hockey camp. I would like to introduce the inaugural summer of the Beauregard Hockey Fight Camp. Most of the kids these days have grown up soft and coddled by their parents. I welcome kids to my camp who are interested in Hockey, and instill in them the long lost art of being an actual tough guy. Most players these days just like to trash talk and then go run and hide behind the referee. After my 8 week program, not only will you improve your on ice ability, but you will improve your uppercut. No one will ever chirp you again, cause they know you'll rip their head off if you want to. We will have special guest camp coaches Larouqe Obama, Pope Coswi, and Niccolo Livius. There will be no participation trophies here. This camp will push you kids to the limit and only the strong will prosper.
