Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Tell me about your team! What are your expectations for your player? What teams are you watching out for this time around? Did last season's results surprise you and how much do you expect them to change this time?
Oh boy my fav tournament the IIHF tourney! I’ve been around forever on team Japan and we have such a great team! We are always almost winning gold have a ton of silvers to my belt and a few bronzes but the end of the day you have to remember it’s always a nice tournament for the off season because it keeps some of the oldies entering retirement age around for one last go for something great. My player Hirano is getting there but I’m going to make sure he sticks around a bit it’s going to be hard but this is my last player most likely for awhile. Take a little break after 10 years of having a player consistently. I haven’t really done much but Hirano has been fun and a reliable 2nd 3rd liners and occasionally first liner for team Japan. Hopefully we can go to the top and win gold soon because my boy Hirano is getting old quick. I’ll keep trying to juice him up with some legal training methods. The teams I’m always afraid of in this tournament is obviously the big three. Team Sweden. Team Canada and finally Team USA. The big threats. I think we can pull out the W this year!!! None the less go team Japan!!!

4. High end offensive talent is cool and all but Justin Time is ahead of BASE PACK on save%, goals against average and goals saved above average. Can Philadelphia solve them or is it Time for another Challenge Cup in San Francisco?
5. San Francisco has more goals scored per games played than Philadelphia, mostly because of their depth scoring. Which players that aren’t part of first powerplay unit do you expect to have high impact in this series?
6. Which team to miss out from the Finals was best in your opinion? Why them?

2. Gnabe Dabson and Tony Soprano may lead in both goals and points, but after that it is all San Francisco Pride and the rest of the Philadelphia team is not showing up to give the offensive advantage to the Forge. I see the depth really shining for the Pride and helping them pull through. (54 words, +1 TPE)
3. With all of this firepower ahead, as well as the other team having a player that is clearly playing well above the rest, I can't see Cale Salad winning the Anton Razov award for playoff MVP as there as more offensively contributing players on the ice, and Cale Salad's not so strong defensive play with a minus +/- really doesn't support the MVP vote. 4. With such an amazing pun in the prompt, I think it is indeed Time for the Challenge Cup to return to San Francisco. The team is just younger and better overall in both the regular season and the playoffs and I don't see their domination ending any time soon as Philadelphia will struggle to solve Justin Time and his strong save percentage. (62 words, +1 TPE)
5. I always say that depth scoring is what wins championships, that in addition to a strong defense which is what the San Francisco Pride have. Taking a look at their depth that isn't on the first powerplay unit, I see Victor Hargreeves having a big impact on the team with his veteran presence in addition to his strong defensive play on the penalty kill and 5-on-5. (66 words, +1 TPE)
6. The best team to miss out on the finals has to be the Calgary Dragons. They were the only team to bring the eventual Challenge Cup Champions to 7 games, as well as defeated a better team in the Los Angeles Panthers in 5 games. Whether it was puck luck or the team clicked at the right time, it is clear they presented the greatest challenge to the eventual winners. (70 words, +1 TPE)
7. For the SMJHL how can you not expect the regular season winner in the Quebec City Citadelles to win? They smoked the rest of the competition in the regular season, presenting the best goal differential and just edged out the Newfoundland Berserkers for that #1 seed. However, I would keep an eye out on the Maine Timber who are always a threat. (62 words, +1 TPE)

During their 20 seasons in league Philadelphia has never missed the
playoffs. Which is impressive but still there are other teams with
longer playoffs streaks, while other teams clean the house others try to
stay afloat and do a retool while still staying in playoffs, both with
varying successes. Out of last 5 Challenge Cup winners both Los Angeles
and San Francisco missed playoffs about 6 seasons before they won their
cup while New England has been in playoffs since S67. What in your
opinion is best way to achieve success in SHL? Is it better to have high
but shorter peak or should teams try to aim staying close to top but
likely never reaching it for longer, potentially almost indefinitely?
Can they somehow do both?
Personally, I think the answer to long term success in the SHL is to draft and develop in the way that the Philadelphia Forge does it. If you draft high quality players that earn well and then keep them, that is a recipe for success in this league. For example, my player was drafted at 20 overall. Marek Carda was drafted before me at 19. You don't need to sell the farm for first overall picks because if you're scouting well, you can find them later on in the draft. Beyond that, it's important to foster a locker room that's welcoming and keeps people engaged.

The San Francisco Pride won the Challenge Cup. They won it when they went on a tear in games 3 and 4, outscoring the Philadelphia Forge 17-0. It killed all of Philadelphia's momentum and spirit. It was a complete collapse, a beat down of epic proportions. I do not have a favorite part of the series because once it really got going, it was pure hell. But I will not be discouraged because the Forge will be back. We're going to train even harder, not forget this painful loss, and strive to be right back into the mix next season. Quote:11. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Finals Roadtrip
Your team has scheduled a road trip to go see games 1 and 2 of the SHL finals between San Francisco and Philadelphia (or to four-star cup finals between those games if your player plays for either team). You’re in charge of officially setting up the trip. The only rule? You gotta go by bus! Where do you stop along the way? Which of your teammates are you most excited to go on a trip with? Do you end up missing game 1 and 2 because of the many stops between your team’s home city to San Francisco that you’ve planned? Does the bus end up breaking down at any point? How does the trip go? If you’re on a team playing in the finals, plan a trip to the first away games instead (by bus ofcourse, for teambuilding and fun).
As the self-appointed trip planner, Billy Herrington is determined to make the Atlanta Inferno’s road trip to games 1 and 2 of the SHL Finals between San Francisco and Philadelphia unforgettable. A bus trip? No problem. Billy makes sure the journey is just as entertaining as the destination. First stop: Nashville, Tennessee. Why? Barbecue and live music. The team hits a honky-tonk for a night of bonding, karaoke, and way too much brisket. From there, it’s off to St. Louis, where Billy insists on stopping at the Gateway Arch for a group photo (and some Instagram content). Next, Kansas City—more barbecue. Some teammates are skeptical, but Billy is all about variety. By the time the bus rolls into Denver, the thin air and mountain views are a refreshing change, and the group enjoys a quick hike to stretch their legs. Of course, the bus breaks down in the Nevada desert. With the team stranded, Billy organizes an impromptu desert workout session to “keep everyone playoff ready,” while others debate their survival skills. Eventually, they hitch a ride, making it to San Francisco just in time for game 2. The trip? Chaotic but legendary. Billy thrives on the team camaraderie, especially sharing laughs with Philippe-Eko Eel and life-long friend, Van Darkholme.
Quote:13. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Five Nation Tournament
The only international tournaments in SHL are WJC and IIHF but in real life we have had Olympics, World Cups and now the 4 Nation tournament. What kind of tournaments besides of IIHF and WJC you’d like to see in SHL? How they would be different from the current tournaments? How often they would be played and would they be played instead of current tournaments or would both be held at the same time? Or would you think it would be instead better to restructure current tournaments?
The SHL could benefit from adding a Five Nations Super Series, a mid-season tournament to shake things up. Unlike the IIHF and WJC, this event would feature mixed rosters built from smaller groupings of nations. For example, North America (Canada and the U.S.), Europe West (Sweden, Finland, etc.), Europe East (Russia, Czechia, etc.), Asia-Pacific, and a Wildcard team made up of smaller hockey nations and underrepresented regions. It would emphasize creative team-building and encourage fans to root for more diverse lineups. The format could involve a short round-robin followed by semifinals and finals, all squeezed into a two-week break in the SHL schedule. This tournament wouldn’t replace the IIHF or WJC but would complement them by bringing international excitement during the season. It could also act as a scouting showcase, giving younger players and fringe stars a chance to shine. What makes this unique is the fusion of talent from multiple countries, creating rosters that blend contrasting styles of play. Imagine a line featuring a Canadian power forward, a Finnish playmaker, and a Japanese speedster! It’s a perfect opportunity to experiment and celebrate the global reach of the sport. Fans would get thrilling matchups, players would enjoy representing broader regions, and the league would gain a fresh, marketable spectacle.

Looks like San Francisco won Season 79 Challenge Cup! So who won and why? What could the other team have done differently to change the result? What was your favorite part of the series?
Let's start with what Philadelphia could have done differently. How about not give up two touchdowns in Game 3. 14-0! Holy....
Let's now look at the San Francisco Pride and the things they did well that brought them a championship this season. With a record of 49-15-2, the Pride were an outstanding goal scoring team. averaging 5.24 per game. They were the top scoring team in the SHL. Ironically. Philadelphia was second in goals scored at 5.00 per game. The top two scoring teams in the SHL Regular Season met to decide who would win the Cup.
I think the rest of the teams in the league need to take note. Offense wins in the SHL.
Logan Webb led the Pride with 53 goals, 20 more than he had last season. But Dominik Winters had a team-high 17 goals in the playoffs, showing the Pride did not depend on just one main goal scorer to get the job done. Webb had 15 goals in the playoffs while Oskar Scholz added 14. Scholz and Winters were second and third on the team for regular season goals, meaning the Pride's top goal scorers stayed the same in the regular season and the post season.

It's no secret that the boom and bust cycle through the seasons and eras determine the championship windows that the top teams try to ride like a wave to the top. Unfortunately this also contains the darker side of the bust cycle and why some teams just cannot climb out of a rebuild into that coveted top team (in the window for a championship) status.
Smart asset management obviously is the top quality to possess to get to, and try to stay at the top. Next comes the locker room and community culture in the team and league, then just pure bum luck. Of course the top teams today got there with all three qualities and will stay there if all three qualities to sync up and their wave of being in the championship window can continue.
So, is it better to have a long or short peak at the top? Members ultimately decide their own luck, I think. The Panthers, Pride, Forge, Barracuda, and Renegades are all in their window at the same time. Everything's gotta go right to win it all. Members gotta keep updating, managing the cap, drafting and trading well, and the result is luck.

For first time since league changed to 66 game schedule all teams in league finished with more than 30 points and it wasn’t by small margin as Edmonton who finished last ended up with 38 points, which would have been enough to make playoffs ten seasons ago. Do you think it shows change in mentality of teams when it comes to tanking? Maybe they just got lucky? Or are we seeing the impact of the changes to how draft order is determined?
I don't think it changes anything at all when it comes to tanking, but the bottom teams are just simply eeking out more wins. They are snatching a few wins from the top teams, and yeah there may just be some luck in play there, but if most of the bottom teams are winning more games, doesn't it say more about the top teams being slightly less powerful than their rosters suggest? The game is played on the ice, not on paper. Also worth noting is that the bottom teams have taken more advantage on home ice, winning more regularly in front of their home fans. Perhaps home ice advantage is real here.

The tournament structures are pretty great in my opinion, there are a lot of teams and a lot of representation, so there are no issues for me there.
Perhaps the one thing I may suggest is that there would be some kind of World Cup event that took place every four or five seasons, like, every even-numbered season or every fifth multiple, like S80, 85, 90, and so on. Perhaps that would showcase an elite pool of players that appear every tournament, providing for some unique prestige and hype attached to it. I wouldn't know where to start getting this idea off the ground though haha.

Management: Okay so we put in a lot of money so that you could take a bus from Chicago to San Francisco and see the first couple of games of the finals. We did this because we thought it would be a wonderful way to show the team where we want to be in a few years and get them familiarized with championship level play. Why did they miss it?
Agent Tesla: Well because I honestly think that the idea that they are not familiar with championship level hockey is insulting and also because I may have spent the money provided on setting up a charity fundraiser that ultimately raised more money for a very good cause.
Management: Okay elaborate.
Agent Tesla: You see I spent the large budget provided rigging up the bus to be able to be controlled via the classic Sega CD game Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors or more specifically the Desert Bus portion of the game. We then had a group of people rotate controlling the bus via said game as part of a charity stream in the hopes of raising more money than we spent for a good cause. Doesn't that make it all worthwhile?
Management: Did you end up raising more money than we gave you?
Agent Tesla: Yes and no.
Management: What do you mean yes and no?
Agent Tesla: We raised more money than we spent, but the team bus can now only be controlled via Desert Bus which has caused the drivers to understandably go on strike and if we give in to all their demands we ultimately will have broken even on things.
Management: Sigh. Alright then let's see if we can get them to give in for the good cause.
Agent Tesla: Glad you see it my way!

Honestly, I'm just happy to have made the Latvia roster this season. Progression has been very slow for me as of late, and I really do value the culture that Latvia has, and how wonderful the vibes are, pretty much entirely to witness in my case, but still nice nonetheless. First game could have been better, but what can ya do. I'm hoping to get some offense going in this tournament, but its the best on the best, and well, if I can't really get the offense where I want to on the slightly less best best, then I'm not too strung up on it here. I imagine Latvia won't be pushing for a medal this time around, I think we've still got a lot of work to do, but I will appreciate the time I have here and the wonderful people behind this team.

3. It would be nice to see a defenseman win. Yes I am a forward but my previous player was a defenseman and I think it is a lot harder to get recognition in this league playing on the back end. I think since we just look at stats, it is easy to just look at the scoring table and go based on the person with the most goals or the person with the most points or someone at the top of the point table that plays on a weak team. Defense have to do a lot more in the stats columns in order to get the recognition, which makes it that much more rewarding when one of them wins or when one of them is in contention. They will usually get my vote when that is the case, so I am cheering on for Cale Salad to continue and to win the trophy he deserves to win.
6. Going with the same logic I used to give Cale Salad my vote for the Anton Razov award, I am going to say the Wolfpack. Yes, I might be a little bias once again but if you look at the standings, other than Philly and San Francisco, we are the team that have 3 of the top 20 point scorers in the league. Not only that, we have the top 2 leaders in hits, and a goaltender that could be in contention for the best goaltenders in the league (that is not playing in the finals right now). So, we have a pretty stacked roster on the top end, but it was ultimately our depth that hurt us in my opinion. Bruno Tooyo had to be better damn it.

This is without a doubt to me due to making tanking less rewarding. I have been part of multiple leagues where tanking has been an issue and this will always be seen over and over again in the leagues. Not rewarding tanking makes the league as a whole a lot more competitive and even. The effects, or even rewards, are what we see now. A much more healthy league where some players no longer might be stuck on a losing team for many many seasons because they are building up for a specific season to start being very competitive again. I really am glad the league has been put in this more healthy state and I think it might as well have changed the mentality on tanking for some individuals here as well, when they realized having a LR with winning chances for each game is a lot more fun than losing an entire season!

14 - Procrastinator Special
The playoffs are over and unfortunately the San Franciso Pride won the cup, much to the chagrin of Jacob Marsh whose player rights are currently owned by the Forge. As to why the Forge lost it may come down to some terrible puck luck and running into a hot team on too many off nights. Two major games were aberrations during that series that seemed to bury the forge before they could get started games 3 and 4 saw Philadelphia outscored 20-1 giving San Francisco a 2-1 lead and taking all momentum. They actually outscored the forge 23-1 over games 2,3 and 4.
While trying to find reasons it’s almost hard to attribute any blame to what could have been done differently. Forge were 4th in the league in goals against and 2nd in goals for but nobody would have believed it during that 3-game stretch. The numbers are pretty baffling. They gave up almost 10% of their total goals allowed for the season in just those 3 games while all offense seemingly disappeared. The 14-0 loss saw their goalies combine for a .641% save percentage which is almost unheard of for this squad.
As far as what they could have done differently, honestly, I don’t think there was much to be done aside from replay the series and hope for much better bounces. They may also want to check access to their pregame meals and switch up hotels they stay at in San Francisco because wouldn’t be surprised if something was slipped into their food…this team that came out was just not the same we saw in the regular season or throughout the playoffs.

Prompt 9 (224 words) +4
I think it’s super important for teams to remain at the top of the standings, at any cost. I know this sounds obvious, because you always want to be competing for a challenge cup and all that, but also if you want to remain competitive, you should be the best team possible. That sounds obvious too, but what I mean by that is you’ll attract a lot more free agents by being a good team on the brink of a championship. Would a free agent rather go to a team that is clearly in the middle of a rebuild, or a team that needs one more piece (that particular free agent) to push them over the edge and finally win the cup? Nine times out of ten, that free agent is going to pick the team that best sets them up to win it all. I know it isn’t always as easy as “make sure you’re always in the playoffs and at the top of the league,” but if Philly can do it, I feel like other teams can do it too. On top of the value to free agents, the perceived value of your picks drops too, which sometimes can make it easier (on you as the GM) to trade them. A first rounder is still a first rounder even if it’s late.
Prompt 2 (57 words) +1
As much as I like both Gabe Dabson and Tony Soprano, I feel like San Francisco is too much of an absolute juggernaut for them to make a meaningful difference. San Francisco has like almost 6k tpe per forward line, which is absolutely bananas. I don’t think there’s a team that can stop them.

9. Playoff Strategy 8/8
In my opinion, which to be fair means next to nothing as I've never been an SHL GM, I think that the best way to get good success in the playoffs is to simply make the playoffs. There are a ton of teams each season that end up with a chance in the big dance, and though certainly there are ways in which a team can stay dominant for a long time, it eventually catches up to them in terms of not only their players getting older, but other teams being sick of their success as well. The best way to simply give yourself a chance is to be in the playoffs, and Philadelphia has done that consistently for years on end. They only have one cup to show for it, and certainly would have liked to have had more, but arguably should have won this season had the sim not fucked BASE PACK with a 12-foot pole.

Ottawa to San Francisco by bus? That's a tough one. It's about a 42 hour drive if everyone goes smoothly and it rarely does. It's probably bring the entire team but make sure there were plenty of books so people were quiet. As for stops, I would probably refuse to stop until we got to Chicago but it would just be for thirty minutes. "Yep, were here." And then we'd be back on the bus. The hardest part of the trip would be going through Nebraska, I-80 is one of the worst drives in the history of driving. You have hundreds of miles of literally nothing. By the time that was done we would make it to Cheyenne where I would probably just give up. I used to live in Cheyenne so I'd have to look up any old friends and I'd probably stop caring about making the finals at that point. I'd probably see if they had any local teams and just start playing there instead. I'd hand the keys off to one of the Captains and send them on their way to never be seen again. Cheyenne has plenty to offer someone like me which is some decent places to eat and sleep. They even have a movie theater so I'm good.

Quote:Prompt 14 - Procrastinator Special
I honestly had no idea who won until I had to do this prompt, that's how little I'm invested. I'm honestly not sure why I'm still doing this. But as for why Philadelphia won, I mean San Francisco, just look at the leaders. The Forge had two goalscorers in the top ten, the Pride had six. As for points, Forge had three while Pride had seven. It seems like San Francisco just had so much more depth than Philadelphia. While Philadelphia's leaders were way ahead of San Francisco, it seems like the bottom lines did more for San Francisco. But I never watched a game so I really don't know how it all shook out. Scoring that many points in the playoffs is kind of bonkers anyway. What are we even doing here? As for what Philadelphia could have done differently, it's hard to say. They're an accomplished franchise and have been for quite some time but maybe age is catching up to them? Again I have no clue who is even on their team or how old or young they are but I'm just guessing. I guess they could have tried to score more goals than the other team, that might have given them a better advantage.
