S55 SMJHL PT #6 - Season in Review
#32

Q’s from @Wawazat

1.Favorite game from S55?

- I’m not sure which postseason game this was exactly, but one of the games I attempted 6 shots. I didn’t hit any unfortunately, and we lost, but at least it showed I had heart.

2. Personal Goals for S56 ?(ie;Score more, Hit harder, better D positioning)

- By joining so late, this season was mostly a wash for me. Next season the biggest goal I have is to score more and be more efficient. This season I had 10 points but 9 of them came from assists.

3. Favorite Pregame Psych music ?(ie; Rap, KPop, Rock, Country, Didjeridoo instrumentals)

- Probably some form of electronic, probably trap. Just anything high energy really .

4. Any superstitious rituals before games? (ie; Always tie the right skate first? Eat only green m&m’s? That kinda thing)

- I do, actually. I have to put a sock on my left foot first.

Bonus Q-
5. Would you rather be trapped in a stuck elevator with Bane after He finished a 56 oz protein drink? -or- stuck in the last seat on delayed coach flight one row behind Afalava after He won a Kimshi and Balut egg extreme eating contest?

That’s a good one.. I think I’ll go with Bane here, solely for the fact that going off of the Dark Night Rises, Batman can survive a nuke at this point. He’d have a shot at saving me if/when things go down... Oh you meant Bane on the team lmao. I still need to get familiar with everyone’s player name.

His Q’s to me...

Q’s from @Huskies311

1. how do you feel about what Nevada did this past season?

Mixed emotions , seriously unimpressed & miffed that we lead the league in all the worst ways..But, I believe there’s a spark on the horizon and the Battleborn will be a force in the next couple seasons.

2. Do you have a role model? Could be a non-hockey person as well

NO..I’m not into the cult of celebrity ..I DONT FOLLOW...I’m into making me the best I can be..there are personalities and talents or skills I can and do appreciate and respect. But, I’m gonna be me

3. Do you see Nevada going further than the 1st round next season?

HELLS YEAH..We’re gonna improve the talent we have and we’re gonna add to that . AND We’re gonna make our name ‘Battleborn’…respected..envied...hated..by every other team in this league....that fiery enough for you??..…F yea.

4. How has scouting season been for you?

Honestly, haven’t done any ..Besides, I’m a goalie not a coach or a scout....I’ve been busy training and trying to get new gear that fits ..Being a tall goalie has some drawbacks. But, looks like I’ll be making a deal to use Bauer for S56.

5. Bonus Q- Is a hot dog a sandwich?

Bonus Bogus A- Hot dog....Pretty sure that’s a GM of an SHL expansion team

Thanks @bigbluex02 for the questions.

1. Did you achieve any personal goals/milestones that you set for yourself?
I didn't have that many to start out, but I certainly scored much more than expected. I didn't think I'd have anything special in either goals or assists, but with the trade of our big guns I got a little more playing time and, as a result, capitalized on some chances. I didn't really have as many takeaways as I'd like, but that's what offseason is for.

2. How has the vision for your player build shaped up so far? Would you change anything if you could?
The build has honestly been working very well, with the help from management I've sort of run their plays while calling a build audible every now and again. I know that there's an option for redistributing 50 TPE, which seems valuable on the surface especially getting that pile of training camp TPE when I'm drafted, but for now I wouldn't change much. I think it's pretty balanced and, of course, if it ain't broke ...

3. What are your thoughts on the branding of the Seattle and Atlanta expansion teams?
I don't like Seattle's. The typeface reminds me of something a straight-to-VHS sequel to Disney's Hercules would have. I really like Atlanta's.

4. Is there anyone you see being a huge steal in the upcoming SHL draft?
Not in particular, if I'm honest. A number of rookies have really been showing that they're commited to building great SHL players, and there are a handful of old veterans who everybody wants on their team. In true SHL fashion, a "steal" will likely be labeled as anybody who continues to earn TPE in Season 60 if they're drafted past 32nd overall; but I think this will be a fairly successful class as a whole, between two expansion teams and multiple franchises aiming to rebuild.

1. Who do you feel like you had the most chemistry on the team?

I'd like to think I have really great chemistry with everyone on the team *chuckles*, but on the ice, I seemed to be really clicking with Stan Q. Next late in the year. I can't really explain it. Mostly because the 60 minute games always seem to fly by in six-minute chunks where you only remember the highlights, like some kind of training montage in a crappy inspirational sports movie like Rocky. But the stuff I remember, he always seems to be there. I'm not even sure if he's on my line. But it seems to happen a lot.

2. Coming into the season, you had some goals to meet. Do you feel like you met most of those personal goals? How do you feel about your season overall?

I guess, in the grand scheme of things, it was a solid year. It started slowly, but I really started to come into my own during the second half of the season and the playoffs. I had five points in six games against Anaheim, and then, well, none against Newfoundland because scoring against Newfoundland is hard. Happens.

3. Quebec City ended up losing in the second round. How do you feel about the team's playoff performance? What could have gone better?

See above, lol. I think we surprised people by winning the series against Anaheim as an expansion franchise. It was definitely very exciting. Newfoundland is, uh, really good. Hopefully, we'll be there in a couple of seasons.

4. What are your goals for the offseason? Any teams looking interesting to you?

I dunno. Get drafted. Not suck in WJC. Going through the IIHF recruitment process was fun but I'm also glad to have it behind me. I surprisingly have only heard from a couple of SHL teams, so we'll see how that plays out moving forward.

1) How was your first season in the league?
Pretty good. I had a fun time with Vancouver, even if we didn't make it past the second round of the playoffs.

2) Are you happy with your attribute choices for your player right now?
Pretty happy. Although I didn't exactly meet my expectations for goals scored, I was playing third-line minutes. I'm sure with more time on ice I'd be well up there.

3) What was the feeling of going from sweep to swept?
Well, it was a disappointment for sure. I think it says a bit more about St. Louis than us, though.

4) How awesome is Boom and how much are you going to miss him?
Boom who? I don't know any Boom guy. Seriously though, it's gonna suck seeing our highest-scoring guy head up to the big leagues without a Cup. Gonna miss the man... even if he is still our co-GM.

Thanks to @Kraagenskul for the questions!

1) Did you enjoy your rookie season in the SMJHL?
I did! The Whalers organization has been fantastic, the entire league is generally very welcoming and encouraging. We had a rough start to the season but pulled together towards the end an even managed a playoff series win! The whole concept has definitely been different but enojyable.

2.) How was your experience playing on a rebuilding team in Vancouver?
As above, great! The team started off poorly but we had enough active players that we managed to push ourselves from second to last overall to the middle four. It is quite satisfying to be part of that kind of turnaround.

3.) What talents or skills are you looking to improve upon over the offseason?
I plan to work on my balance, stamina, passing, and maybe some shooting as well to a lesser degree. I like being a defensive stalwart but I also would like to be counted on to put the puck in the net.

4.) What do you expect of the Whalers come next season?
The expectations are high after a strong finish this season and they have every reason to be. We should be able to push this team to be in the top 4 overall and at the very least a semi-finals berth. However, since we have so many active players I can see the team making its way to the finals .

my questions for @to12143

are you disappointed with the outcome of the playoffs this season?

Yeah, it really felt like we had a chance to go all the way and win it all, so to lose in the fashion that we did was heartbreaking. It sucks but only one team can win any year, and I'm sure we'll be back again next year in a similar position, so just gotta look to the future.

what was your favorite part of this season?

I think just learning and growing with the team, and experiencing the locker room and the presence the Knights have. Growing with them and getting used to the team and all these new faces was fun.

what are your expectations for next season?

Championship, no if ands or buts. We're that caliber of team and I definitely wanna see us win it all. I think we'll be an incredible team and I think we'll get over the hump next season and rock the finals, and bring back the cup.

are you looking to make the jump to the SHL soon?

I want to win a cup before I even consider going up. I don't expect to be in the SHL any time soon but it all depends on who drafts me. I want to help the Knights as much as possible so I plan on staying down until they tell me I have to go up

@to12143s questions to me

What were your expectations when you joined the team?

Nothing much really just wanted to fill the back up role for a team and they wanted me first. they are hell of a team and I enjoy being on it. they are now my fam so to speak. they fought hard in thre playoffs and we will be right back at it next season so I am excited to be apart of this team.

Do you want more of a role and not just a backup goalie spot next season?

I am okay with developing another season as the back up. not too worried about how many games I get. Peter Ramsey deserves the starting role and I will be a strong back up for Ramsey. A 1, 2 punch for kelowna is not a bad thing Tongue lol

What are your expectations for the SHL Draft, where do you think you'll be drafted at?

I do not really care where I go as overall I am actually hoping later in the draft. like last overall draft pick lol mr irrelevant. I want to be the first Mr. Irrelevant to hit 2k TPE that would be awesome. I do not think I will be drafted last though so I expect late third early fourth round. Where? I do not know exactly. Whoever needs a goalie for the future I would say. Whoever wants me can have me Smile

How do you feel about the Knights going forward, do you think we'll be back in the hunt next season

100% hunting for the cup next season. we were one win away from playing in the finals so yea we are going to be on the hunt for the cup once again next season and I am very excited for it!!! GO KNIGHTS GO!!!!

Questions from @krazko

1. Best part of last season?
I think the best part of last season for me was the draft. It was a super exciting day and things couldn't have gone better as I ended up being selected by the first team on my list. I went a little higher than expected but I'm gonna make sur eit was worth it for the Timber.

2. Worst part?
The worst part of last season was definitely my offensive production. I'm not too bummed though as I made it a point to prove myself through my defensive play to help the team keep possession as much as possible. That said I definitely could've helped out a little more in the offensive zone and that's something I will be looking to work on in the coming seasons.

3. Your biggest contribution to the team?
I think my biggest contribution was my defensive play as a forward. I've always took pride in my defensive abilities and i feel i was rewarded with a hefty amount of PK minutes this season. I'm hoping to be able to play just as good defensively next season while upping my offensive production.

4. If you could, anything you would have done differently?
I would've probably worked on my physicals a little earlier in the season. I've seen some great improvements in my game since i started working out a little harder and I think getting on that earlier could've helped the team a bit early on.

Question to @krazko

1. What was your biggest surprise about the league coming in as a rookie?
How much fun it is and how engaging. I've had a blast both on and off the ice. Amazing teammates and players in the league! Can't wait for next season!
I didn't expect myself to be so drawn in directly.

2. What do you feel was your biggest strength on the ice this season?
I think it would be my passing game, as can be seen in my 11 assists, which is also what I wanted to develop and contribute to the team.
But I would also say my defensive game got a lot better once I started training some more on that during the season.

3. you put up 15 points as a rookie this season . What were your expectations for points heading into the season?
I had no major expectations, being completely new I didn't know anything about any of the teams. I had hoped for 20 points, but I am glad I managed to reach 15 points with the limited ice time I have with our talented roster

4. Having scored 4 goals, which was your favorite or most memorable?
It's gotta be the first one.. our 7-2 win against the Battleborn, ended the game 1+2 and 2nd start. That's a night I won't forget

I did it with @Andy

1: Looking forward to year two, which returning player do you want to be your pairing defensively?
Tanjiro Kamado. I see his effort both on and off the ice and it's clear he is someone who gives it his all every shift. I think he and I together would make an excellent pairing and achieve great success.

2: Our team was lacking depth at forward at this season. Do you believe if Bane had played up front that it would have made a difference?
I believe Bane could have helped the team in many ways, but I think, as a team, we still have a long way to go just because we had a tough hill to overcome. I think as a unit, and as a unit alone can we achieve success and that will require each and everyone of us.

3: In practice which goalie do you prefer to shoot against
Truthfully, whichever is seemingly more cold at practice at stopping pucks. That's sometimes C.K. Supernaw, but only because he is a bit newer on the scene, but he's going to be an amazing goaltender in his own right very, very shortly.

4: Do you believe taking time away form villianary and playing professionally made you a better hockey player?
You think I am a villain? Just look at this year. I wore a mask, I decided to quarantine a city, and aimed to get rid of the corrupt. I think I am the greatest hero of our time! Tongue But no, I believe I was able to properly balance my duties to the Battleborn and also being Gotham's reckoning.

Questions from @FlappyGiraffe

1. What was your favorite memory of your rookie season?
Probably being drafted by the Kraken. It was super exciting to have them reach out to me within the literal first hour of my existence and really feel welcomed in by everyone.

2. Do you have a player, either in Carolina or on a different team, you model your game after?
I didn't really look at specific players before I started my build I just kind of winged it. A real player model would probably be Teravainen.

3. Is there a team you'd prefer to end up on in the draft?
I'm just happy to be drafted honestly. I don't really have a specific team in mind and would welcome any experience with a team that has a positive locker room and a good group of guys looking to be successful at the end of the day. As long as the team has a decent plan for around the time I'll be joining, I've got no limitations.

4. What are your goals for next season?
I surprised myself with my production this year so I feel I've set the bar higher than I wanted but it would be nice to see a 5-8 point increase next season and slightly better defensive play.

Questions for Flappy (he opted to do graphics)
1. As one of the top earners in the class, where do you see yourself being taken in the draft?
2. How satisfied with your past season were you?
3. What can the Kraken improve on to take home the championship next season?
4. Who was the most supportive member for you personally on the Kraken this season?

Thank you for the questions @jruutu! My questions are answered in his post.

Quote:1. How did the season go from your perspective, did it go as well as you hoped?

For me and the team, I think it was a good season! I played to a good standard and put up quite a lot of points which is always a good thing to be able to do. The team was last in the standings but we knew this would happen because we are a young team with a lot still to learn.

Quote:2.  Nevada had a lot of new faces in the team, did you feel that you had real chemistry with some players on the ice already?

Because we were a new team it was a worry that the chemistry might not be there but I think that we did a good job of playing good hockey together and getting some good results! I think that I had chemistry with everyone I was able to play with this season which made my results better.

Quote:3. Which teams or players were the most annoying to play against?

The Battleborn had a rivalry with the Citadelles who were the other new expansion team this season so they were probably the most annoying opponents because we all wanted to win so bad!

Quote:4. Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently during last off-season in terms of training and preparing for the season?

I don’t think that I would do anything differently! I had a good rookie season and I cannot think of things that I would have changed.

Today, we had a chance to sit down with rookie Vancouver forward KnockedOut byOvechkin with some questions about his rookie season, the Whalers, and his outlook going forward.

First, we asked KOBO how he felt about Vancouver's performance this season. The Whalers started weak, but finished just below the middle of the West with 51 points and a 51.0 points percentage. KOBO was initially worried, telling us "At the beginning, it seemed like we were gonna have another bad season and probably the #1 pick in the draft again, but then we turned it around and started winning lots of games." We pressed KOBO on his expectations for the season, to which he told us "I think we exceeded [our] expectations."

Next, we drilled down to the individual level. KOBO, like other rookie forwards on the Whalers, fell towards the mid-bottom of the team's stat lines. Recognizing his early struggles, KOBO said "Well, [I] wasn't really much good at anything this season, but [I] did have a decent amount of shots blocked for a wing." KOBO, in fact, had the second highest number of blocked shots among Vancouver rookies and the most among VAN's rookie forwards. He also kept up a solid training regimen and told us he felt he "stayed near the top of the draft class."

We reviewed the season with KOBO, asking him if he had a single favorite moment of season 55. KOBO told us it was "probably when we won our first round matchup in the playoffs." The team's struggles were clearly on his mind in retrospect, as he mentioned it was "something I didn't think would happen early in the season" and called the series win "really exciting."

Finally, we looked forward with KOBO asking how he felt about S56. While he is "not sure what specific are will be most improved," he did note the rapid individual improvements of the team. "I think we will be better overall next season as the majority of the roster reaches the TPE cap." KOBO signed off optimistic: "I think we could be one of the top teams next season."

(big ups to @ddrector )
