S38 PT 6 - Postseason Kickoff
#31

After a very active and exciting trade deadline that cemented the Colorado Mammoth's place outside of the playoff picture, Ryan Gardiner knew he had better prepare to go back home for the off-season to see his family back in Worcester, Massachusetts for the first time since being drafted. So after a long drive to clear his head after his team's season had ended, he decided it would be fitting to go and visit all of his folks back home.

It was an exciting time for him finally getting to wind down after months of rigorous training and playing hockey. Ryan Gardiner says he plans to spend most of his break over the off-season on a few of his favorite things like gaming, baiting his pals with promises of playing games with them, going after girls way out of his league, and avoiding most of the outside world altogether. He believes that playing these games will be a nice lighter form of training to help him improve his hands and reaction time. Outside of that, he has actually managed to go out and get some real training in order to preparation himself for the upcoming IIHF Junior tournament where he hopes to attract the attention of SHL scouts.

For Montreal Militia the first round of the play-offs went rather well with them losing only 2 games two the Kelowna Knights both of whom were just by one goal and one of the games was even lost in overtime. The coaching staff and players were more pleased with their performance than disappointed, although, there is some reason for being nervous - the next round will put Montreal against Firebirds which is one of the best performing teams of the season and to get to the Championship finals will take some heroic performances from the Canadian junior team players.

The first round was also a reason for Romualds Loks to finally smile, his performances in the first round were complete opposite to what we saw in the regular season with Loks acquiring 1 goal and 3 assists in 6 games.

Now Montreal Militia is heavily focused on dealing with the incredible firepower Prince George Firebirds have, and while it's more than sure that the team can rely on their attacking star Jack Tanner, a very careful and hard work will be required to tighten up the defence as PGF really know how to score. The defensive line will most probably be lead by Connor Tanner while Cedrid Moreau, the rookie goaltender, will be put under extreme pressure.

Montreal went up against a stout Kelowna team in the first round. We barely scraped into the post-season so expectations were low for everything except us. We came out swinging in Game 1, shutting them out 3-0. The hung on in Game 2 eventually edging us out in double overtime. We then got a two game lead before the managed to get a win. It was too little too late after that as we are on to face Prince George. They are a tough team to prepare for but we are more than up for the challenge. They made a killer trade earlier in the season. They gave up a load of picks to bring in top talent. If you can’t build a team, buy a team I guess. They think they can just walk their way to a Championship but they will have to work for it. Detroit are no joke either but if they are looking past us, they are in for a big surprise. We have the strongest rookie class and some of the best prospects in the league. We are not going down without a fight, if we even go down at all. Bring it on.

The last few games of the season have been really tough for the Colorado Mammoths players. They had no chance to make the playoffs and with their best players traded at the deadline and the lack of motivation, they lost almost all their remaining games. The coaches Incite and Toe wanted to meet all the players individually after the season finished. Ti-Guy had an alright season so he wasn't so worried to meet them. He played a limited role and kept things simple, he couldn't really be blamed for this disappointing season. Ti-Guy entered their office and sat for about 15 minutes listening to them and remaining mostly silent. They really insisted that Ti-Guy needs to work big time on his cardio as he's expected to play more minutes next season. His play without the puck his good enough for the juniors, but he would need to improve his skating and puckhandling if he wants one day to play in the SHL. It's with all that in mind that Ti-Guy left the meeting really motivated.

Ti-Guy knew that a SHJML season was going to be more rough than any level he played so far but it was even more harder than he expected. He gave himself 2 weeks to just relax and clear his mind of hockey, he won't even watch the SMJHL playoffs. He will also for the first time hire a personnal trainer to help him this summer. He shouldn't hit the ice a few weeks before training camp, his energy will be focused in the gym.

The Scarecrows easily coasted by the Vancouver Whalers, despite coming into the series as the lower seed. I was the starting goaltender for Crows, against fellow rookie Julian O’Sullivan, drafted 10th overall. I should’ve never had the job in the first place, but due to Seattle’s retention of Johnny Yuma we had no choice to anoint me the starter heading into the postseason. The 32nd pick ended up beating out the 10th overall; I’d say that’s pretty good even if Sullivan was constantly under pressure. Most of our success was predicated upon a high uptempo offense that Vancouver was not ready for. The defense had some unfortunate mishaps, but Vancouver could never capitalize on them.

We got hot at the right time just as the Whalers were beginning to cool off. Players such as Logan Jensen, Dermot Lavelle, and Bobby Watson hit their shots at rates significantly higher than that of the regular season. This is very surprising when we’ve been a middling team all season, showing only a few glimmers of greatness early on. There are a ton of veterans who have stepped up and begun to lead this team to some meaningful wins. However, facing Detroit, the defending champions, could easily prove to be a challenge that we’re not capable of beating.

The first round had the Kelowna Knights go against the Montreal Militia. We knew that we were up against a tough team and that this series was going to be a struggle. The first two games were an even back and forth between the two jaggernauts. When the Knights flew to Montreal, it seemed like all was lost when the Militia won two in their home barn. The flight back to Kelowna was tense and stressful. It seemed like it was the end of the line and most people know that it is extremely difficult to win from a 3-1 lead.

Something sparked within the Knights and they were able to close the gap in Game 5, making it a more manageable 3-2. The locker room was revitalized, ready to take what is rightfully ours. Nothing could stop this moment from happening.

For a moment it seemed like anything was possible until the Militia knocked us out of contention. It hurt but from every failure, something new and good can come out of this. The knights will be back, hungry and ready to reclaim their legacy as the back to back four star cup championship. In the mean time, it's time to train and get ready for the next season.

Since Prince George had a first round bye going into the playoffs, we had some time to use efficiently while the first round occured. We spent a lot of time skating and watching film on our possible opponents. My favorite part of this extra time was definitely watching the first round games with the team. We would get together after our daily practice, order some wings or pizza, and sit and watch at the stadium. We spent some time getting to know the new guys that we got from Colorado, doing team building activites like playing Cards Against Humanity. Im pretty disappointed that I never won a game, but I guess most of my teammates did not understand my sense of humor. Coach definitely worked our butts off in practice during this week, but I feel like I'm in the best shape I have been in all season. I'm hoping I can score some and produce as well as I did in the regular season. Hopefully we can continue our regular season success into the post season, since we were doing quite well in the regular season. Hopefully all this training will help us win the Four Star cup, and bring it to Prince George for the first time in a long time.

Written: Write 200 words about your team's performance in round 1 of the playoffs. If you had a bye, write about what you've been doing to prep for round 2. If your team didn't make the playoffs, write about your player's offseason antics so far.

With the Raiders easily claiming last place in the SMJHL season, Yannick Berger has returned to his hometown for some rest and relaxation, and to do a bit of training with a former coach who taught him as he grew up. Berger first met up with old friends, who took him out and about as the newfound fame of the young Austrian took him by surprise, with kids running up and asking for autographs, and just wishing Berger luck in the SHL. When someone from your hometown hits it big in the minor leagues of the overseas Hockey program everyone notices, especially young hockey players looking for an idol. This is exactly what happened with Berger, with his old coach asking him to talk to kids he coached now, and to help teach them what Berger knows. The rush of fame, even in its small form of hometown fame, was startling to Berger, who was still used to being a nobody from before his SMJHL, and soon to be SHL, career. For Yannick it’s mainly preparing for next season, and preparing to hear his name called when the SHL holds their draft, while meeting with friends and family in his time back in Austria. I probably have the single best job in all of sports, BACKUP GOALIE!
It doesnt get any better, we got emininated from the playoffs and every feels like absolute shit about it, blaming themselves for a piss por preformance, all the while im sitting here like, sucks dudes, but my ass was on the bench every minute of this series, so it aint my fault! HAHA maybe i could have been the player who won the series for us, sure its unlikely but you cant say im wrong because we never got to see. Im not bashing coach or Samee, im just simply saying that it isnt my fault, not putting blame on others, just stating, that its not my fault. In all seriusness though it was a hard fought series, of course i would have liked to park my sweet ass in the net for a game or two but theres gotta be a backup and a starter, Holtby was a beast in the playoffs and this series loss was entirely OFF his shoulders, he kept us in it. Unfortunatley we couldn't get it done, but we will next year, hopefully i can train in the off season really hard and step up to the plate in some key spots for this club. Its tough to stay on the bench and keep yourself motivated but the managment is doing a great job of keeping my head in the right place. Sucks to go out round one but for me its motivation for when I get to play in those situations, ill remember what it was like for my teammates to lose a heartbreaking series and ill fight that much harder for every puck and every win.

Just gunna snipe this in here since the topic isn't closed Wink

The Vancouver Whalers playoff run was cut extremely short as they were benched in just 4 games at the hand of the St. Louis Scarecrows. Vancouver struggled to put together actual plays, nothing really seemed to "click" for the boys in blue and green after the regular season, or maybe St. Louis just had the Whalers' number. Regardless, the Whalers only mustered 11 goals to the Scarecrows' 19 goals scored. Vancouver's top shot was Dude Love with 4 points, one point per game. Six players followed Love with 3 points a piece. SOme of these names included two rookies, Ostap Maksimov and Guts O'Bigbers who really stepped up in the playoffs for Vancouver.

Let's look at a game by game breakdown of the Whaler's downfall. Game One saw the crows win 5 goals to 3, where Paddy O'Sullivan broke out immeditiley with a hat trick! It was tough for Vancouver to come back and win the game with Paddy so hot! Game two however was a bit closer, as this time the Crows only won by just a goal, final result was 4-3. In this game, surprisingly two Whalers were named stars of the game, Woodcroft and Jukka despite a loss. Games three and four were left dominated by St. Louis with a 3-1 loss and 7-4 loss wiping out the Vancouver Whalers team for good in Season 38.
