S41 PT #4 - Predictions
#31

Written Task: In at least 150 words, make some bold predictions for the first round (or second, if we are well into it for the back half of this PT being open) and justify your choices. Who do you think will win the series? Who will be the most important players from each team? Will there be any upsets? The question is open-ended, so simply put, what do you have to say about this season’s playoff matchups? Must mention at least two playoff teams.

My bold prediction is that the Calgary Dragons are going to come back from being 2-0 and 3-1 down in their series versus the Winnipeg Jets and actually WIN the series and move on to face the winner of LAP/EDM. Like I said, I think the Dragons will dig deep and continue being the thorn in the Jets side in the playoffs. I think the most important players from both of these teams is gonna be the guys wearing the bigger pads: the goalies. Hoculate and Zhumbayev are both goalies with cup winning experience, finals experience and game 7 experience. Neither of them will get flustered in the moment. However, almost every game thusfar in the series one team has heavily outshot the other team and in two or three cases, the team that was heavily outshot actually WON the game on the back of their goalie.

Upset wise, I think Buffalo (if it's really considered an upset) is going to shock and I think Minnesota will finally fall before the finals this year. Edmonton looks posed to shock as well. All in all, this years playoffs are really hotly contested and pretty damn interesting.

Let's talk about West Kendall vs Buffalo. Now Buffalo may have won the first two matchups, but West Kendall gonna take this bish for one reason and one reason only, Sven Brokstad and him being an elite defenseman.

I mean look at his first game, 2 assists, and 4 blocks in one game. ONE. GAME. AMAZING there has never been such a feat ever performed in the SHL or playoffs for that matter. I mean there were no PIMs either. Just a superb display of finesse and effort by the middle aged defenseman.

Now take a look at his next two games. 0 of everything but he is still positive in the +/- game so clearly he is just biding his time for games 4-6. That's right, 6, cuz the Platoon aren't losing a game from here on out. The outcome is just a given, and the Stampede should give up right away.

So anyway, West Kendall win, Buffalo lose, the world keeps spinning.

Los Angeles is currently playing against Edmonton Blizzard on the first round, Edmonton took a solid 3-1 lead, but today LA managed to take one back, so the series is now 3-2 for Edmonton.

My semi bold prediction is: series goes to game seven and LA goes through to the next round!

Reflieux from LA has been in minor penalty trouble after five games, 24 minutes is the second highest in playoffs, if and when he manages to stay on the ice and stay cool when the Edmonton goons run their mouth to him, I think he will be difference maker for LA.

McFadden in Edmontons net has been one of the best players in the series so far, 3.14 goals against on average and save percentage of 89.6 are top level numbers among all goalies. LA more than likely comes into the game six with fire and try to score a goal or two early as possible, so McFadden has to be ready right from the start, the longer he manages to keep his net empty on game six, the better everything looks for Edmonton.

The biggest reason why I think LA takes game six home, forces the series to game seven and eventually make their way to second round is simple - they have nothing to lose right now, coming from being down 3-1 to 3-3 is going to be massive energy and confidence boost for LA, that will carry the Panthers into game seven victory and to the next round.

I don't know that I have any actual bold predictions to offer. It's easy to say that a bold prediction is that Los Angeles is going to go over Edmonton in 7, and that's probably what I'll just go ahead and go with. The Panthers are almost always underdogs, even when they're doing good, because they've been a team known to choke it out and throw everything away in a short matter of minutes. But that in mind, I think they'll take it over Edmonton purely off of the fact that I chose LAP over Edmonton, so fuck it. LAP has the win in them and they'll get it quick and dirty. They're coming back in the series and I need my god damn TPE. Los Angeles comes back to win the series 4-3 over a defeated and angry Edmonton Blizzard team.

Beyond that, my BOLD PREDICTION #2 is that the West wins the cup again. I don't think the East has it in them this year. Cheers.

It's kinda sad that it's a bold prediction and that this outcome would be shocking but I'll say the West Kendall Platoon finally stops shitting the bed and will at least reach the finals. They maintain an active roster of great quality year in, year out and they always get eliminated early. Maybe it's the year where they make it all the way. I wouldn't go as far as saying they will win the cup but I could because who cares. I wanna believe but it's tough after being a player on that team for so many years and coming close a few times but not quite close enough. This might even be more of a wish than a prediction but with so many friends on the team, I'd really love to see the Platoon get far. I'm horrible at predictions however so we'll see if they even get past round one.

My biggest boldest prediction for this season's playoffs is that the Los Angeles Panthers will upset the Winnipeg Jets. I know I predicted the Jets to win it all, but the Panthers have shown flashes of brilliance and are going to find a way to perform an upset.

While Mikko Linna is dominating the scoring race right now, you have to look past that top person. Look behind Mikko and you'll find 3 Panther players in the top 6 scorers. You don't see anyone from Winnipeg until you get to the seventh, eighth and ninth spots.

When it comes to the playoffs, it's all about depth scoring and we're seeing that in spades from the Panthers.

Not only that, but the goaltending in LA has been amazing. Evgueni Marmeladov has posted an impressive .907 save percentage, and a 2.69 goals against average.

So LA has the scoring depth, and the goaltending they need. They're gonna do big things from here on out.

Having slain the Dragons, I think Winnipeg is in for a tough fight with the LA Panthers. I actually feel pretty good about our odds this season -- we've got a deep roster and are getting contributions from everywhere, this is likely our key Challenge Cup window for the foreseeable future. Add in a hot goaltender (in more ways than one B) ) and I don't think it's a stretch to say that Winnipeg will come out on top. On the other hand, we do have a penchant for shitting the bed deep in the playoffs in the last few seasons...but if the Capitals can make it past the second round, anything's possible in this brave new world. It has been a bumpy road, compared to the regular season with some of our key contributors lacking on the scoresheet (and having a comparatively bad +/-) but I think that just makes the Caps analogy even stronger.

I’d really love to see the West Kendall Platoon go far in this season’s playoffs. At the time of writing this, they’ve already bested the Buffalo Stampede in seven games, and are getting ready to face the Hamilton Steelhawks. In terms of important players, I think it’s fair to start with their top defensive pairing of Ludwig Koch Schroder and Finn Krüger. The pair form a formidable attack on both offense and defense. They’ve combined for 15 points, 23 hits, and 11 shot blocks. Oh, to be young, German, and a stud. Along with the Germans, forward Mikko Linna is having a coming out party as one of the SHL’s top forwards. 14 points in 7 games? Incredible. Another team that I can see making a lot of noise these playoffs is the Los Angeles Panthers. They’re the perfect mix of youth and veteran leadership, and everyone on the team seems to be producing at a consistent rate. Five players currently on the Panthers lineup are performing at a point per game or better. Along with their scoring, they also have a rock in goal with Evgueni Marmeladov. The young goaltender is enjoying a great series so far, posting a sub-3.00 GAA and a .907 save percentage. Don’t be surprised if you see one of these two teams make it deep into the season 41 playoffs.

Since I am doing this a little bit later I am going to talk about the conference finals. In the West we have the Winnipeg Jets (who seem to be favored) against he Los angeles Panthers. I expect the Jets to come in and dominate the panthers. The Jets just beat the Calgary Dragons in 6 games while it took LA 7 games to take down Edmonton. The Jets were far away the best team in the league in the regular season and I expect them to be able to go against Los Angeles and pounce on them, just like they did in the regular season. The Jets were 7 points up on the second place panthers.

If los angeles is upset minded and wins the series, expect them to be the favorites, as the West was significantly stronger than the east was in this past season. I think either the Jets or the Panthers will be heavy favorites in the finals, so this western conference finals should be a great one to watch, a shot at being Cup Favorites is on the line.

I got a few hot takes on the playoffs this year. First of all, the finals are gonna be the Hamilton Steelhawks, because underdogs, and the Edmonton Blizzard, because they have 69 points. Ultimately I predict that the Edmonton Blizzard will win because 69 overpowers everything and because Edmonton needs some kind of hockey to watch after the Oilers threw themselves in the basement for the next 12 years (ouch). But for the first round and the second round I predict that the Hamilton Steelhawks will beat whoever dares to challenge the underdogs. And, with the ultimate mighty power of 69, the Edmonton Blizzard will obliterate anyone who blocks their path to the cup. I think Cory Knouse of the Edmonton Blizzard will definitely be a key part of their team, he was 2nd in the league in goal scoring this past season, and will definitely have to contribute like he did this season to get them a chance at the cup. For the Steelhawks I think that their goaltender, Jay Bae, must step up from his terrible season this year and perform at an elite level to get them the cup.

I think Kelowna is going to win the 4 star cup. They have a solid amount of depth and the team has some of the best players in the SMJHL. With Daddy Mack, Jacob Dorty and Brock Becker carrying the team, we are going to be set for a long run in this playoffs. We did have to sweep Detroit again on route to the 2nd round but it won't be too hard to upset another team. We will murder whoever we need to in the 2nd round and make it to the smjhl 4 star cup finals. When we get there we will sweep them again and make Detroit cry. Despite Detroit not even being in the finals we will crush their spirits over and over again. It does not matter who Kelowna plays, they will win the four star cup in a dominant fashion. And I will win playoff MVP again

A bold prediction eh? When it comes down to the Winnipeg and Panthers series I predict Winnipeg will sweep the Panthers. WQhy do I say this? Calgary threw everything they had at Artom Zhumbayev and he stood on his head pretty much the whole series except for 1 game. A hot goalie can basically win it all for a team and I see Zhumbayev carrying Winnipeg to the cup to be honest. I just don't feel the Panthers have enough juice to get the job done. They are getting good scoring up front but not a huge lot of contribution on the back end. All cylinders have to be firing to win the cup and I just don't see it for the Panthers at all. Winnipeg dominated the regular season and in my mind they will also dominate the playoffs and the Panthers along the way to winning the cup. Sorry LA I just think you're running into a juggernaught.

My bold prediction, is Hamilton struggles out of the Gate in round 2 against the West Kendall Platoon, and ends up winning in 6 or 7. The most important player for the Steelhawks will be Konig. Konig has been excellent thus far into the playoffs and will still be in round 2. Beaujeaux Biscuit will be the most important player for the Platoon, as we saw in game 1 getting peppered with shots. He will have to keep shutting down the Steelhawks offense, if they want to have a chance. I could easily see the Steelhawks offense drying up and the Steelhawks losing, as the Platoon have shown in game 1 they are capable, and Jay Bae is shaky at times. My other prediction is that Steelhawks defenseman Sami Owens will continue to be bad. Sami Owens will be the reason the Steelhawks lose this series, if they do in fact lose. Overall, The Platoon- Steelhawks series could go either way.

my bold prediction? im betting winnipeg takes it. why? you ask? well from my little shl knowledge points me in that direction. they have a huuggee tpe lead on any other shl team. when i asked about that i was told "everyone goes there to win a cup" not the worst idea to have one of those teams because when they eventually lose you can rub it there face that much more. as for which players will be amazing.....it has to be gary grease, with a name like that how could he not be a huge part in the playoffs.

basically i think they are going to dominate in every aspect for 2 more years, then cash savage will get called up to buffalo and show those jets how to fly the fuck outta of the playoffs. so Winnipeg wins this season, and next. and then buffalo wins for the next decade.
