S53 PT #1 - Shelter At Home

Shelter at home? Yeah, can do. Lucky for Darnell NOLA isn't getting hit too hard right now, but back home in Tampa they're in the thick of it. He wishes he could be with his parents to make sure they're sticking to the quarantine, but it is what it is. To kill time, he's been watching various live streams. Some of his favorite performers have been putting out live music on streams to make up for shows that were cancelled, sports teams have been streaming on twitch with simulations of their games. The SMJHL awards show was live streamed just today, so that was a good way to kill a couple hours. Lots of binge watching shows, like the Office. Gotta keep fresh. Westworld just debuted. Lots of gaming on steam, new Age of Empires. All in all, there would be worse months to be locked up at home.
It might be harder for Darnell to stay fit than to stay put. In that vein he's been working out at home as much as he can, and rollerblading around the city (at healthy 7ft yd intervals) to keep those legs going. Word on the street is the pre-season might be played without fans. Which... isn't really so different from a regular pre-season, so we'll have to see how that goes.

I’m spending my quarantine time doing prison workouts, riding my Peloton bike, and cooking some delicious meals. I do most of my training with body weight exercises anyway, so I don’t think my time away from the gym will have too big of an impact on my training. I’ll use my Peloton for aerobic training and to make sure my lungs can keep up when we get back out on the ice. I think my favorite part of working out is pigging out post meal. I like to use the grill off my back porch to cook some delicious meats – steak, chicken, and burgers are my favorite. I also like to cook fish on my grill, salmon and swordfish are my favorites. I’ll also use the grill to cook some asparagus, peppers, onions, really whatever vegetable I’m feeling will go well with my meat. To keep myself busy, I’m also trying to read books – but usually can’t do that for too long before I find a show on Netflix or Prime. Also been playing some video games recently which has been nice, usually I feel like I don’t have the time to do it – silver lining of staying home. I do get lonely, so I’ve been doing group video chats with my friends from Sweden and some of my Colorado teammates.

As an overseas player from a city close to the heart of the crisis in Italy, Hartmann has been keeping up to date with the situation and staying in contact with his family, who are under quarantine. On his side of the ocean in Vancouver, Hartmann has been taking advantage of the nice spring weather in Vancouver during his quarantine by cooking various foods, especially on the barbeque on his apartment patio. To stay in shape and keep that fire for when the season does come back, he does keep up with some light weight routines. For the most part, though, it's an opportunity to recover. Hartmann recently returned from playing in the World Junior Championships with Team DACH as well as a stint with the Swiss big club in the IIHF Championship, so the league shutdown is an opportunity to recover from the side-effects of the physical play that he is so well known for after his first season with Vancouver.

The quarantine at home and social distancing situation has been tough for Akira Ren. This season he is making the jump to the big leagues and he was looking forward to quickly making friends with his new teammates. While they haven’t been able to hang out much in real life, his Syndicate teammates have got him into various video games such as League of Legends. Ren is unfortunately very bad at this game but he is slowly trying to get better during his spare time. Additionally, he knows he has to improve his on ice game in order to be worthy of the SHL level. He has invested quite a bit into a home gym to help him with his training and has booked empty ice rinks. This has led to him becoming a much better skater overall. However he still has much to work on such as his strength and balance. He hopes he can still improve these despite the quarantine situation.

Initially, Ian Venables was excited about the quarantine. Naturally a homebody, he likes to kick it in his bathrobe and watch shitty TV shows. Also, reports say that the quarantine could be the hottest pick up scene since the time Cameron Carter II shocked the world by re-signing with the same team twice in a row -- and subsequently sending the women of the world into a confused frenzy. They say that with nothing else to do in their house, many women hop on their favourite dating app and are content to swipe right on whichever SHL rookie catches their eye. Venables was quick to hop on the bandwagon and see what he could cook up. He matched with a lovely lady, the complete package and set a skype date for the 8th night of quarantine. After discovering that she has a 4K 60fps webcam, however, he decided that maybe he'll do a puzzle during the quarantine instead. There's a lot of creeps out there.

Henrik Lekberg Osterman spends his time in quarantine much like he usually spends his time, doing DIY stuff. Everything from building a small house in the backyard for his ducks and chickens to perfecting his recipe for bread. He decided early on that he would not be sitting inside and moping for the remainder of the crisis but that he would spend his time on self improvement and self reflection. Since going outside is tough at the moment, especially now when he just moved to San Francisco, he really does miss the great outdoors and his old favourite hiking trails back in Colorado. But, as previously mentioned he has decided to be the rock that others can rely on in times like these and has kept to a rigorous and disciplined schedule of training, completing personal projects and doing some, what he calls, community service online. He recently put up a large blog post about how to bake bread and how to create your own sourdough culture in the case of yeast or bread being hard to find in the local area. That blog entry can be found here.

Phineas Gold would not do a very good job at sitting at home during a quarantine. For one, it would start off extremely fun as he would be able to run around his house cleaning and playing with his dog. You see his dog is the real winner here, since his owner is gone most of the day during the season he is ecstatic that he now has only fun times! The problem here is that Ice is a husky and young huskies go crazy without the proper exercise. In order to pass the time as his pup goes wild, Phineas would resort to baking food (that he couldnt give to anyone) and endlessly swiping on Tinder or some other dating app to get himself some kind of contact. Of course, every time he tried he would get texts from Michael Fitted asking where the blow is and if he could come over. Crazy Michael Fitted.

With the quarantine being on, Reid would take some time to help others, probably buying groceries for the elderly and doing some contact less delivery for them. When he was just stuck at home, he would be playing mini-stick hockey, wii bowling, and watching Mad Men for the 5th time. When he was able to motivate himself, he would do some online yoga videos, or maybe a workout with his Bowflex 9000 © that he bought with his first SHL paycheck. He would quarantine with his girlfriend, which means they would get to bake cookies together. Reid needs to make sure he does not get fat from sitting around, so in the middle of the night when everyone else is sleeping, he would go for runs outside, making sure to social distance himself from anyone who looks like they might have a cough. The rest of his time would be taken up by FaceTiming the other Detroit players, as he would get lonely and miss them very much.

Tom Fiddler is handling the Shelter At Home directive very well, in that he is not sheltered at home. Nor is he gallivanting about in the city or some country across the ocean. No, Tom Fiddler has vacated to his cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where the cool air is fresh and carries with it the scent of pine and childhood. Tom Fiddler always loved coming up to the U.P. (as it is known) as a kid. He loved to explore the trails, climb the dunes near pictures rocks, and relax and enjoy mother nature. Being the millionaire that he is, Tom has invested in a modern, but rustic looking cabin about an hour from Munising and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The cabin is surrounded by thick pine, almost redwood like, which leaves the front and back yards shaded, but not overly crowded with needles and leaves. The cabin also faces a small lake, upon which no other resident...uhh...resides. The cabin is more of a house, with all the amenities you could want, including a home gym and a rink, though now it's too warm for it. Tom will catch up on his training, play video games, and read one of the many books in his faux-library near the fireplace.

Hernadivic recently moved from the midwest city of St. Louis into the great city of Buffalo, deciding to room with one of the elder statesmen on the team, Monkey D. Luffy. Luff and Fish got along immediately upon Fish being drafted to Buffalo. It was recently announced that Luff was named captain of Buffalo, taking over from the retired Metzler, and his leadership abilities must've rubbed off on Fish, as I was also announced as an Alternate Captain, taking over for the retired Walker.
Luff and Fish have done their best to stay fit and not bored, including practicing our golf shots throughout the condo, and playing non-stop video games. Much of this has been done with a lot of their Buffalo teammates, such as non-stop Skribbl games, visiting everyone's islands on the new Animal Crossing, and a lot more. Fish has become a pool trick-shot extraordinaire, as can watch his trick shots on Tik Tok. They are hoping to get back on the ice sooner than later, as Buffalo has a very promising team this year. ![]() Player Progression Director be nice to me it's the law
Burlok was comfortable sheltering at home for the off-season. Living on such a large and private farm provides a lot of opportunity to get out and enjoy some sun without worrying about running into people. He could still do all of his daily chores and training without much change, beyond the anxiety of the world at large. Burlok and his family decided to donate 100% of the goods from their farm to local German food banks for at least the next few months, as Burlok's SHL salary is more than enough to keep the property afloat. Burlok, to some extent, has appreciated the reality check. It's easy to forget how much money you're making and how well you're doing when the wheels of the world are turning as usual. But when something like this happens, it puts into contrast how difficult it is to get by for a lot of folks. Burlok has been more than happy to give as much as he can at this time, and to follow the directions of the experts and stay on his dang farm!
