S51 PT #5 - In The Kitchen
#91

Philipp Winter is actually a pretty good cock, although he doesn't find the time for it too often during the season, or at least that's his excuse for not being being in the kitchen much most days. Still, he emphasizes the importance of food and nutrition as part of a balanced training-regiment which is especially important in a long and stressful hockey season. You shouldn't just fill up on carbs or protein and hit the gym if you wanna maximize your well-being, Winter believes, but look into healthy foods that are still tasty like whole-grain bread, nuts and berries and lots and lots of veggies. If you make these things the staple of your everyday nutrition, then it's perfectly fine to also have a couple of days where you don't care about the health part of eating as well and just enjoy some shitty fast food or lots of sweets and candy.

Speaking of unhealthy foods, during the winter Phillip will also be going for a traditional German Holiday Season dish that isn't actually German, but Swiss: Raclette. A perfect meal to gather some friends around the table and have fun with them while greatly overindulging in cheese-based deliciousness and regretting it mightily the next day.

Andrej's hands aren't fantastically amazing even on the ice, so taking them off of the area of expertise he already has and trying to put them to use in a kitchen had mostly mixed results. Obviously, when you make big bucks like mr. Doskocil here, you can either just eat in restaurants or have take out every day and not care, or even have your own chef, so what little cooking skills he learned as a kid, he barely holds on to in his adulthood. The only actual full fledged meal he can cook is probably pasta, even though he likes to test around with a lot of different stuff to put into it, and maybe some eggs for breakfast. But to be fair, it's much easier to have cereal in the morning, so why bother with the stove and heat and cooking and yeah, there is a reason why Andrej doesn't cook much. It's not rewarding enough for the effort he has to put in so he just simply solves his food differently.

Eko van Otter is a master at preparing food, though I wouldn't necessarily call him a good cook. His favorite meal to make is to head down to the local river (it was easier to find good shit in Anchorage, and a bit more difficult in the Boston area - trips out past the suburbs are frequent) and go for a quick swim. If he's swimming around for a bit and happens to find some nice ripe juicy fish, he grabs them and puts them in a sack to bring home. 20 minutes of swimming is usually enough to grab enough fish for the week. He lugs that sack o fish home and freezes some of the suckers. His preparation style is simple - slice the fish open from tail to head, splay those guts. Top with a little salt and pepper, maybe some oregano and basil if he's feeling a little frisky. And then GO TO TOWN no need to cook that bitch just eat that fucker raw; should take about 2 minutes to gobble the entire fish and leave just a fishy skeleton behind.

Kata Vilde is a true master in the kitchen. He continously taunts general manager Steelhead with photos of his culinary masterpieces. Anything Italian or deli related gets a particular rise out of our beloved GM. Vilde is also a classic baker, making well over 100 dozen cookies during the December months for those less fortunate and his cookies go all across the United States and once even to a soldier in Iraq. His Christmas masterpiece this year was a huge brown sugar crusted ham he picked up from the specialty butcher shop he favors. He wanted to cater the teams cup winning banquet last season but the team insisted he enjoy himself at the party and not have to work but as any true chef knows cooking for people who enjoy their food isn't work at all but the most enjoyable part of cooking. Word is that Vilde is planning a huge offseason bash at a local restaurant he rented out for the evening for the Dragons players before they go to the Bullet Club, Prince Devittt's present from Vilde who was his secret Santa. Hopefully the guys won't eat too much and fall asleep on all the hot girls at the new strip club. He plans to leave Linda in charge of the cleaup.

Honestly, Ronlain had never been much of a cook. He could make like, a sandwich, maybe even a grilled cheese on a good day. He could microwave some cup ramen or make some box mac and cheese, but that was about it. Being in the SMJHL, he was on his own for the first time in his life really, and decided that eating like a college student was not what he was looking to do. So, he did what any sensible person does when they want to learn how to cook. He turned to YouTube. Spending hours pouring over recipes, getting a good idea of what to look for when cooking. Learning things such as temperatures, different tools and cooking aids, what flavors go well together, etc. After some kitchen needs ordering on Amazon and a little practice in the kitchen, Ronlain can now make some pretty tasty and impressive meals. One of his personal favorites being a great meaty bolognese sauce.

Alexei has a knack for cooking being the only child he would cook constantly with his mother Sophia at their home in St. Petersburg. Alexei particularly has a knack for Russian classics and always enjoys cooking when he can get the chance whether it is back home with his mother or entertaining hungover teammates with Russian cuisine. One of Alexei’s favorite dishes to cook is Syrniki a type of sweet cheese pancake that he loves to smother with powdered sugar and fresh berries. This is probably his favorite thing to cook during offseason breakfasts or when he wants to just have something sweet in the morning but not overwhelmingly sweet. Alexei has enjoys making another Russian classic Stroganoff though probably his favorite hearty meal is Kotleti with a wild mushroom sauce. There is nothing more fun than searing some great meat patties and smothering them in a delicious mushroom sauce just like his Mother used to make. Needless to say Alexei likes to eatout but he will always cook in a pinch for himself or teammates.

monkey d luffy has no real talent in the chicken but boy he can eat. Basically the only things he can make is mac n cheese and cereal. Maybe some peanut butter sandwiches. So when it comes to the chicken, since getting his contract with buffalo, luffy hires a crack team of chefs that specifically craft a diet for luffy to maximize the gains he gets on and off the ice. There is a really unique science for what you need to put in to your body to get the maximum out of it. I would love to delve into the specifics of what exactly is being eaten, but luffy doesnt remember. It's more of a process and honestly he barely remembers what he puts in his mouth and is just always thinking about the next game he has. So basically thats it for my ted talk here in the kitchen of monkey d luffy.

Alexander is a pretty good cook, for a guy that earns his money with hockey. He learned cooking back home in his mother's kitchen. Because of that his parents are both from Europe, his cooking habits are European as well in special the Austrian kitchen. So he is able to make a very good "Wiener Schnitzel" or in especially the tradition food where his father was born and raised up. It's called "Käskspätzle". Hot spätzle (is a type of pasta made with fresh eggs) and grated granular cheese are layered alternately and are finally decorated with fried onions. After adding each layer the käsespätzle is put into the oven to avoid cooling off and to ensure that the cheese melts. That's Alexander's most loved food and it's pretty easy to cook. He also can cook you a five-course dinner without struggling to hard. You can't do much wrong with a pork roast, sauce, rice, potatoes and vegetables.

Kirkby is a very capable chef. Seeing as his parents owned a pub back in old blighty he spent much of his youth around the bar and the kitchen so learned the value of cooking early in life.

On Christmas day he will be inviting his close friends around and will be calling on some of the mainstays of hearty British food. Pigs in blankets, devils on horse back and probably some scotch eggs too. The main event has to be a roast the most feasty of all British food. Maple sesame carrots, duck fat potatoes, fried onion and parsnip and of course a large Yorkshire pudding to mop up all the delicious gravy. Guests will have a choice of roast beef silverside, crispy pork belly, lamb rack or a butternut squash roast for those not inclined to eat meat.

For desert Rex calls upon a true kiwi classic and will whip up a Pavlova with cream, strawberry's, raspberry's and cherry's as the garnish.

When it comes to holiday cooking Lil Manius has many is more than capable. The holiday spirt really comes through Lil when he is cooking in the kitchen. The holidays are always quite an event around the Manius household and food is always a focal point. The Chirsmas dinner started with appetizers consisting of shrimp cocktail, pigs in a blanket with herbed mustard dipping sauce, baked brie with raspberry jam, and acadian salt cod cakes. The holiday entree which Lil’ helped prepare with the Manius family consisted of a bone in prime rib roast with caramelized shallots. The roast was accompanied by many side dishes such as roast potatoes, green beans, salad with cranberries and almonds, and some dinner rolls. This was severed with a warm mulled red wine. When is come to desert well it is simple, cookies, cookies cookies. The Manius have always been known for the baking and in more than one way. Therefore, the meal ended with chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies, gingerbread men, and peanut butter buckeye balls.

When it comes to kitchen then Danila Zhernov is a natural cook, but sadly he does not use his skills into the practice as he is a little bit lazy to do it. Since he was a kid he always had this kind of feel for experimenting and making various dishes out of random stuff that he could get at home. One of his favourite dishes, that he sadly cannot cook himself is the national soup of Ukrainian cuisine - Borsch. Here in US there are not many options of his home food, so he tries to cook as much as he can, but very often or most of the times, due to the game and practice schedules he just orders in some oriental food or some bbq chicken from grill houses. He has to be careful tho and check the calories of them ordered foods as they are fast foods and are not healthy for professional athletes and too much of it can really hurt his health.

As a true ninjitsu master, Yoshimitsu McCloud probably doesn't sound like the sort of person that would be any good as a chef but, to be quite blunt, the Irish Ninja is probably a better talent in the kitchen than he really is on ice. When she first met him, Omelette assumed he would be pathetic at cooking, only to find out that his mother actually taught him cooking skills (among other housekeeping talents) as part of his ninjitsu training, which led to a really fun night where Yoshimitsu spent about an hour slicing fishes to make sushi for the family with his trusty sword. Many an Outlaw staff member relaid to their friends and family stories of how McCloud would happily help the kitchen staff at the Saloon whenever they required someone to do the hard task of cutting while also stopping a little bit to watch his sword mastery.

As for the food itself, ninjas eat whatever they can. It's not like they can rest it out anyway.

You might guess what kind of food Mikael Choybuk would make in the kitchen, and you would be right. The guy does not know how to make much, outside of chicken parmesan meals. He can definitely cook chicken and add parm to it, that's for sure. Yeah, he can make some macaroni Kraft Dinner, or some Hamburger Helper, but those are all instructed on the back of the box. He can definitely make scrambled eggs and toast as well. Just don't ask him to make anything crazy or anything with many steps. You won't catch him making fettuccini alfredo or some kind of medium rare steak dinner with all the potatoes and veggies on the side. Don't ask him to slow roast anything either, or BBQ much. He has tried BBQ in the past, but he either doesn't add enough flavour or he overcooks things. If you want a meal from Mikael Choybuk, just go with chicken parms, as it's what he does best.
