VIP Status babyyyyyyyy - your player has been invited to attend one of the first homestands of the CC finals as a VIP guest - all expenses paid, front row seats, any hotel you want - and it's all on the Commissioner's dime! Are you going to Games 1 and 2 in Tampa or Games 3 and 4 in Calgary? Why are you picking there? And what are you going to do in that city to run up Eggy's tab?? (This is the same prompt as last year but we've got different cities! be creative! Don't re-use what was written last season)

I, super secret agent Michael Scarn, am definitely going to Tampa, Florida for the Challenge Cup Finals. Michael Scarn is going to have a fabulous time in Florida, in all of its swampy greatness, and will certainly enjoy himself. The Buffalo Stampede fell short of their goal, so Scarn is going to blow a lot of steam at the nightclubs while also getting down and dirty in the filthy humid air in Tampa, Florida. Scarn's teammates should make sure that he gets home safe every night because Scarn is going to really go wild. In Tampa, Scarn will go to all the strip clubs and also buy all the liquor that is available in the Tampa Bay Barracuda's luxurious arena. Maybe the SHL should send some officials to make sure Scarn doesn't spend too much money -- but after all, it is a business trip and Scarn knows all about spending his per diem instantly on his business trips.

After a slow start to the regular season, the Dragons have surged of late and have rallied around the #CalgaWe notion of togetherness. On the other side, the Barracuda battled through a difficult East and are led by a very strong young core. Which team are you personally rooting for to take home the Challenge Cup and why?

I am personally going to be rooting for the Tampa Bay Barracuda to bring the Challenge Cup home. When I joined the SHL, the Tampa Bay Barracuda were the team pretty much at the bottom of the barrel. I had heard of JSS from other sim leagues like PBE and NSFL but he never really got going there so I didn't know too much about him. I was surprised to hear that he is a very dedicated member to this sim league and that his player was a super high max earner, since JSS really struggled to attach himself to players in the other sim leagues. While the Barracuda never reached out to me or drafted me, I always find it cool to see teams progress from the bottom to championship contenders and I believe the Barracuda's triumph would legitimize their rebuild and seal JSS's legacy as a great general manager of the Barracuda.

Are there any changes to the playoff format you'd like to see implemented? More wild cards? Move to a single-elimination to bring about even more chaos? 999-game series to minimize chaos? Be creative!

I would love to see some one game, winner take all games for the SHL playoffs. I actually think that it would be cool if the bottom few teams in each division have to go through a series of one game playoffs just to make it into the actual playoffs. For example, the bottom 2 teams would play in a wild card winner take all game, where the winner would then face the 3rd to last team in the conference in a winner take all wild card for the next round, and then the winner of that would get to face the #5 team in the division in a winner take all wild card game to determine who gets the #5 seed in the playoffs. Then, from that point onwards, we would resume the standard SHL playoff format we have adopted traditionally. I think having more chaos and the potential for a team that finished dead last to run through the bracket would be exhilarating and thrilling to see.

Due to some controversial calls during the playoffs, the league is looking at updating the current rules(icing, offside, etc) What new rule or change to a room would you implement to better the game?

Adding a new rule to hockey would be really fun to implement. I think that the first rule I would add to hockey in the SHL would be to allow one skater on each team to carry a knife. You don't know who on the opposing team has the knife. It could be their backup defenseman, their star forward, whoever they want on the team but they have to be a skater, not a goalie. I think this would add a lot of additional strategy and tactics to consider for each game. Obviously, wielding the knife and using it would immediately result in an ejection for the player who uses the knife to stab another player. So, you might not want to give the knife to your star center on your first line. However, if you give it to the goon at the end of the bench, the other team will be expecting it. So you need the element of surprise for your knife guy.

Which player from Calgary or Tampa Bay would you bet on to win a regular season individual award in a future season? What player and what award? What makes you think they'll live up to their potential and take home the hardware?

Mike Izzy is a legend for Calgary and I think he probably still has enough in the tank to seriously contend for some awards in the near future for Calgary. As we all know now tonight, the Calgary Dragons were crowned Season 50 Challenge Cup champions and Mike Izzy, the captain of the Dragons, claims yet another trophy for his illustrious career. But, again, I seriously doubt that this will be seen as an end cap to Izzy's excellence. No, Mike Izzy will certainly challenge for MVPs and points titles and other accolades while he's still a top skater in the league. Watch out for Izzy.

1. For me this answer is simple, I'm spending my day in warm sunny Tampa. When you spend the entirety of the season taking in the "sights" of Lethbridge, you need a getaway every once in a while. Getting away from the snowy Lethbridge means in the morning before the game I am hitting the beaches. If I was going on my own dime I would be going to some crappy public beach with kids screaming and nowhere to sit, but that all changes if I am going on the commissioner's dime. Now we are talking about a beach all to myself, beach chair and someone to bring me drinks I can't pronounce with umbrellas in them. After I get done at the beach I am gonna go hit the casinos for a while, play some blackjack, probably cost the league an entire season of revenue before I am done but it's all part of a true VIP experience.

3/16

2. This is a no brainer, Tampa is a great young team that I'm sure will get their cup at some point but I have to go with Calgary. I love a good comeback story (except for a certain NHL team from St. Louis as can be seen for obvious reasons) and Calgary is the perfect example of this. I'm also slightly biased for Calgary because I love to see hockey communities be rewarded for being passionate fans. I know that there are some die-hards in Tampa but Calgary is one of hockey's stronghold and they deserve something to cheer about. It wouldn't be something that the best teams should ever have to do, no one is suggesting the best regular-season team should be eliminated by one fluke game (instead they should get swept like a respectable regular-season point leading team). But one game for each conference would make for must-watch hockey every single year.

5/16

3. I generally think one-game series are dumb, especially in a game with as much variance as hockey. But all that being said there is one place where one-game series are incredible, MLB wildcard. Having two teams who have scraped the whole season to get to this point, to be on the brink of getting into the dance and playing for it all, you see the best and most desperate baseball you've ever seen. I would love to see something like this in the SHL, teams playing their best, most desperate 60 minutes for a chance to prove themselves even more.

8/16

4. In this alternate reality, one of the ideas from prompt 3 is actually brought into the game and embraced this idea is one where the SMJHL champions get an extra at-large bid to the SHL playoffs. Every year this team is handily swept aside by the lowest seed SHL team to such an extent and with such regularity that people talk of disbanding the rule both for competition and for the safety of the SMJHL teams involved. But this year, things were different. This year the SMJHL champions, the Carolina Kraken put together the perfect combination of skill, size, heart, youth, and sacrificing the right amount of goats. They put together the most incredible hockey moment in history, putting the miracle on ice to shame, and win the challenge cup.

11/16

5. This idea isn't my own so I can't take credit for it but I completely get rid of any overtime/shootout. Instead of any of this "extra hockey"/"skills competition debate" there is a simple solution to how to decide everything...mascot hockey. We watch actual ice hockey all the time, and it's great, but do you know what's even better? 2 guys wearing very heavy costumes go out with skates and play until one of them scores, or they both pass out from exhaustion. The alternate version of this is equally fun, you make 2 actual embodiments of the mascots face off on the ice. So if the Chiefs and the Dragons go to OT, we are about to see a several ton fire-breathing monster face off against a poor native American elder. I think either of these two solutions is so much better than playing the same sport we just say for 60 minutes, and I can see no clear and obvious reasons why they shouldn't be added.

14/16

13.
A. For my money give me Mike Izzy. Gunnar Soderberg clearly has been an absolute force down the stretch for Tampa but you just can't deny the pure skill of Izzy. The man skates like a ballerina lays, hits like a walrus, and can snipe like an Army Ranger. Calgary's elder statesman will just be too much for this inexperienced Tampa Bay team and he will dominate.

D. My favorite name has to go to the goaltender Benjamin Blue. I mean clearly I'm a sucker for any sort of alliteration because it just rolls right off the tongue. Ben Blue is also just such a demoralizing name to have your team shut down by. I can only imagine when Ben was a kid and he would shut out opposing teams and those kids would have to go back to school saying they got shutout but a guy with a name as ridiculous as Ben Blue.

13. Written, up to 5 TPE Pick up to 5 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words to qualify.
A. Each team enters these finals with a red hot superstar - longtime league legend Mike Izzy for Calgary and surprise breakout star Gunnar Soderberg for Tampa Bay. Which of these players will have a more dominant finals?

Gunnar Söderberg will heat up even more in the finals, the young swede with great speed will out skate the old farts on the dragons roster. Gunnar Söderberg got the hunger to win his first ever Challenge Cup and the Tampa Bay Baraccudas really need a win under their belt to formally say their rebuild is over.
B. Kata Vilde and Benjamin Blue are two of the best goaltenders in the league - which team has the advantage in net?
Kåta Vilde will have the finals experience advantage since he's already been to the finals once. Having the nerves under control during a game 7 can make or break the series. Ben Blue on the other hand has had massive season and games and is known to steal games on the regular. It's going to be tough to say one but I'll bet on Ben Blue

C. Do you expect this to be a high-scoring series or a low-scoring series? A mix? Do you think it'll be competitive or will one team run away with it?

I think it will be a high scoring finals since both of the teams are front loaded with great forwards. Although the goalies on both teams look great the skill of the forwards will pepper them with shots and make the numbers quite high. The teams are not build like NOLA or Buffalo which seems to focus on play control

D. What's your favorite player NAME on either team? why? (note: not who's your favorite player. which player name)

David Fantobens, you never know with David you know. Is he a hastobens? A pinto bean? There's so many layers to this player who seemingly don't get a lot of head lines. On thing is for sure, he will crashtobens your net every single game and steal both your pucks and your girl

E. If you could choose any one of the following four options, which would you pick? 1. A chicken parm sandwich from Esa 2. A tray of cookies from c00kies 3. A custom feet pic from JSS 4. An hour long stick and puck session with Jepox
The first three sounds fucking disgusting so i'll go and play with jepox stick for an hour. We can watch some pucks at the same time if he likes. Preferably Hippo Passamus highlights from his time in Detroit. Those were the days for sure. Maybe Jepox can learn a thing or two

15. Graphic, 3 TPE - The Procrastinator Special!
Welp, you waited until the last day to grind out your CW and you also like doing graphics instead of writing. That's cool, too! Create a Series Recap broadcast graphic - the contents can be whatever you want, but your graphic must list both teams and at least 3 stats for each.

I’m sure Calgary is a beautiful city but I’m not going to take my chances weather-wise. I’m sticking in Florida to catch games 1 and 2 in Tampa Bay. It may only be a four hour drive but I still think I can run up a pretty good tab for Eggy. First things first, is a private jet to take me from West Kendall up to Tampa. I’m grabbing the best money can buy, so that means Eggy is dropping 20,000 bucks just for my flight. In order to maximize the damage to the commissioner’s wallet I’ll be staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel. Now I hear you thinking, that doesn’t sound like the nicest hotel in Tampa. You’re right but it is also a casino. What better time to learn how to play poker than when someone is dropping the cash? I’ll be nice to Eggy and only rely on the casino for my booze. I will hit up some of the fancier restaurants for all my meals though. It’s going to be a nice little weekend getaway to the other side of Florida for me.

I’ll be rooting for Calgary in the Challenge Cup. It is so much easier to see a team that you don’t play too much against to win the cup. It’s bad enough that Tampa is a eastern team but they play in the same state as me. I can’t cheer for the guys I play against at least 6 times a year to win the cup. To add to that, Tampa has a very young team with a bright future ahead of them. They have time to get that cup. Calgary has some aging stars on their roster that deserve to get one more.

As competition ramps up for the playoffs, players (both those still in and those eliminated) work extra hard to improve areas of their game that are lacking. What one area of your game do you really needs to focus on improving and how will this benefit the team?

I am a defense first defenseman. I’ve spent my whole life honing my skills to play a tight game in my own end. Something I have learned since turning pro is that strong defense play will only get you so far in the SHL. You need to have skills in the offensive zone as well if you want to get recognized as one of the best players in the league. I’ve always been good enough at moving the puck to start a strong breakout but I need to up my game. I’ve been spending our early off season working on my passing. I’d like to improve enough to maybe get a little time up on the power play but that is going to be tough on the Platoon with talent we have on there already. It is no secret that my offensive numbers are pretty bad. Season 50 was my best season offensively in a few years and that was in part from getting more ice time but also working on my passing a bit throughout the season. My goal this off season and in the coming year is to reach my full potential with my passing. If I can create even a couple more goals each year that could swing a few games in our favor and help us get in the playoffs.

When it comes to the finals you need the skills of course but you also need the experience to back them up. Mike Izzy finals experience coming out the ass. He may be getting old but when the pressure is put on him, he is going to excel. The pressure of the finals can kill a young star or at least quiet them a bit. Izzy is going to do what he has done for years and be a force in the finals.

Benjamin Blue has the clear advantage in net going by the numbers. He beats Vilde in wins, save percentage, and goals against average. Blue has had a good amount of playoff experience as well, so nerves shouldn’t factor too much into his game. Without taking defense into account Blue has the advantage between the pipes.

I think that is going to be a slightly above average scoring series. There are two very good goalies playing but there are even more offensive threats on both teams. I think it will be a competitive series. I don’t think either team is the clear better team. It should be an entertaining series.

There is nothing more badass than going by a single name. For that sole reason my favorite player name is Tampa Bay’s Maui. Maui joins the ranks of one name legends like Bono, Madonna, and Godzilla. To be honest there aren’t a lot of stand out names on the rosters this year but Maui is the best we’ve got.

Is there anything weird going on with that chicken parm? Esa not doing any weird experiments with it like Egon and the slime in Ghostbusters 2, right? Very few things in this world can beat a well done chicken parm. If there are no shenanigans going on with the parm I’ll take one. If there are...I’ll take two.

I'm rooting for Tampa Bay and it is hard to do because JSS is a traitor. Luckily he didn't become a traitor when I was in Buffalo but that's the word around Buffalo that he is a traitor. But then Calgary are honestly a team of many boomers and I can't support a team that are boomers and also that like to cheat and then pretend to be innocent. I guess they are kinda like the Astros or something. They also once beat me when I was GMing in the finals and that one hurt though it hurt less than it would now because it was before all the confirmed rule breaking that they somehow only got slaps on the wrist for. Though someone on my team many years ago did tell us that he thought Esa was cheating regression. I now really do believe it though I don't have the energy to go on the old site and try to check. So by all that I do wish the Barracuda would become the champions of the SHL in Season 50!

Okay well I see in this question that you are trying to spur discussion with some unrealistic suggestions but I really think about a much needed legitimate change to the playoff format that is needed. That first play-in series should not be seven games long. It's far too long. It may be forced by the way Simon T is (I wouldn't be surprised because I don't like Simon T his simulation engine really is annoying) and that all playoff series must be the same length but these long play ins just extend the playoffs and further worsen SHL's already established problem of too much downtime after a season. The playoffs are long. The off-season is long. It can get very boring. I think even the playoffs could and should be shortened by simming the games in terms of how the schedule is (2-2-1-1-1) - that will cut down a full day of playoffs per series by simming the first four games in 2 game increments. I should actually propose this now that I think about how big brain this idea is.

It's so sad that we didn't make the finals - the Buffalo Stampede are an elite team but we will make it and win the cup in Season 51, let me tell you! I think I am a very good player, to be honest, but I do still have some areas to work on though I am improving quickly and am becoming an elite player, like one of the best ever and a future Hall of Famer. The area in which I am working to improve, though, is in rounding out my game to put allmy godly physical talents together to become a truly elite player that is elite among elites. I can skate well, I can hit well, I've been a turnover generating machine, I'm a great passer. Maybe I pass a bit too much so I must work on that one too. It can possibly help me lower my turnover numbers. When I can lower those turnover numbers and lower my penalty minutes (but not my fighting, I will fight and be the best enforcer the SHL has seen in our days of the hockey life), I can truly leave a great legacy for the youngsters to look up to and desire to live and be like.

For this one, I think I will choose the man, the myth, and the legend defenseman Nikolai Evans. He is becoming the team's top defenseman and he is so young that he can play at an elite level for a long time. He even has the award winning genes inside of his blood and organs as he is the relative, maybe even the brother, of former SHL MVP and Challenge Cup champion Zach Evans, who played a long time with the Winnipeg Jets of the Simulation Hockey League, not to be confused with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League! With Nikolai Evans' raw talent and his genes, I think he can compete for the Stevens Trophy soon and be a true Hall of Famer and maybe even win some cups and I agree it was said he couldn't win the cup in Season 50 but he is lucky he has a long time to go.

I wonder if he is human some days but I think that may be a different argument but if he can send feet pic I will study them in my laboratory so we can understand the anatomy of the JSS foot to learn more about prehistoric humans.

Having lost to the Calgary Dragons in the western conference finals, I’ve got to pull for the Dragons in the finals. So at least everyone in New Orleans can say that we lost to the best, the Challenge Cup champions. Also, Calgary had a rough start to the season, like we did in New Orleans, we both were able to start playing some good hockey and move into playoff spots. I’d like to think that if Mike Izzy didn’t start going crazy in the playoffs and scoring on demand, the Specters could have been the western team in the finals this season.

Alternate Reality: Physicists and other smarties believe that this reality is just one of infinite realities existing alongside this one in parallel. Take us over to one of those realities in which everything is the same but these S50 playoffs have unfolded differently. What happened in this reality's playoffs and who's in the Challenge Cup over there?

In my alternate reality there isn’t all that much difference to the S50 playoffs. The only real major change to this reality, is that after the wildcard round and the conference semi-finals, Calgary Dragons forward Mike Izzy unexpectedly retires from hockey after his team advances to the conference finals. No one knows why Izzy decided to hang up his skates in the middle of a playoff run, and Izzy refuses to talk to media or anyone else for that matter on why he called it quits when he did. The Dragons were in shambles after this, and the exact opposite of what happen in our reality, happened in this one. NOLA swept the Dragons and went on the do the same to the Tampa Bay Barracudas. Oisin Fletcher and Richard Physt lead the way to the Specters winning their first SHL title. Fletcher and Physt both retired on a high note after they raised the Challenge Cup over there heads.

As competition ramps up for the playoffs, players (both those still in and those eliminated) work extra hard to improve areas of their game that are lacking. What one area of your game do you really needs to focus on improving and how will this benefit the team?

Being a rookie in the SHL this past season, Lyle knows he has quite a bit of areas that he needs to improve on. During his rookie season posted 1 goal and 14 assists, those numbers aren’t terrible, but Lyle has always wanted to be a contributor on the offensive side of things. So, Lyle’s focus will be on improving his game on that side of the ice. He’ll be looking to work on his shooting in attempts to get his very low shooting percentage up, which was an abysmal 3.23% during the 50 games in the regular season. Lyle if poised to take on a bigger role next season, with Oisin Fletcher and Richard Physt both hanging up the skates, so Lyle really hopes that the hard work he plans to put in during the offseason will benefit the team during S51’s regular season and hopefully the playoffs as well!

A. Each team enters these finals with a red hot superstar - longtime league legend Mike Izzy for Calgary and surprise breakout star Gunnar Soderberg for Tampa Bay. Which of these players will have a more dominant finals?

I think I have to go with Mike Izzy here, for sure. He has been dominate in each round of the playoffs so far, and the way he played against us Spectors in the conference finals, he has shown he has taken it to the next level in these playoffs.

B. Kata Vilde and Benjamin Blue are two of the best goaltenders in the league - which team has the advantage in net?

Again, having faced off against Kata Vilde in the conference finals during these playoffs, I have to give the Dragons net-minder the edge here. Even though Lyle did score his first every SHL playoff goal against Vilde, Kata had the last laugh with the series sweep over Lyle and his Specters.

C. Do you expect this to be a high-scoring series or a low-scoring series? A mix? Do you think it'll be competitive or will one team run away with it?

I think that this will be a very high scoring series. We’ve got the best team from the regular season going up against the best team in the playoffs. I’d be surprised if one team ran with this series, although with the way Calgary has been destroying every team they go against, so if I had to pick a team that could run away with it, it would be Calgary.

D. What's your favorite player NAME on either team? why? (note: not who's your favorite player. which player name)

After looking at both teams, I think I have come up with my favourite name. There were quite a few to choose from, so I’ll give a couple of honourable mentions, Shooter McGavin (both of them) and Van Morrison both get mentions here, because I like the movie Happy Gilmore and the music stylings of Van Morrison. But my pick is Maui. I’ve never been to Hawaii, but will be heading there for the first time in the new year. So I picked Maui, cause it makes me happy that I get to go there soon.

E. If you could choose any one of the following four options, which would you pick? 1. A chicken parm sandwich from Esa 2. A tray of cookies from c00kies 3. A custom feet pic from JSS 4. An hour long stick and puck session with Jepox

If I had to pick just one of those things, I'd have to really think long and hard about choosing between the chicken parm sandwich and the tray of cookies. I really don't see myself every needing a custom feet pic, so that comes off the list first. I'd definitely be down for some stick and puck, but I know my old bones would most likely be hurting after that. So that leads me to either the chicken parm or the cookies, which I'm going to give the slight edge to the chicken parm sandwich. Now I'm hungry, thanks for that.

Since Vilde plays in Calgary he is going to have to check out the attractions in Florida. The big cat rescue center in Tampa is going to be cool to see, just looking at these amazing animals is going to be amazing. Also in the plans Vilde is going to take the team to Busch gardens on a team outing. First stop though will be Geno's for a chicken parm feast. As the Dragons are so competitive there will probably be an eating contest, Otis B Driftwood and Esa Parmborg in particular love to test each other's gastronomic capabilities. After that I'm going to make them all go on roller coasters at Busch Gardens to see who will puke first. We'll probably have some type of pool going on who it will be, most will probably choose the rookie Parmborg since he tends to over do things. Then we'll all probably roll out to the beach so parmborg can get a bit of color and not look like a beached whale with that huge white belly of his.

I am quite obviously rooting for Calgary since I play there. It would be quite a shock for the Dragons to win the cup after a mediocre season by yours truly in net. However the shot at history is quite exhilarating to see if Calgary can come up with their 6th cup win. Everyone loves to hate the best teams and the Dragons are by far the most hated team, continually being compared to the New England patriots and all their championship runs. So I think we are definitely underdogs with most people rooting against us which would make a win even more delicious like some amazing gooey cheese loaded chicken parm.

Are there any changes to the playoff format you'd like to see implemented? More wild cards? Move to a single-elimination to bring about even more chaos? 999-game series to minimize chaos? Be creative!

I think an interesting twist would be to have the wildcards go to the 4 highest point total teams regardless of divisions. This season the east had much more competition that the west. Only 15 points separated the 8th team from the 1st where in the west that gap was 34 points. As I look at the standings it wouldn't have changed the wild cards this season but there is a possibility that that could happen in the future. So it's not a huge change but it could occur in some seasons, giving the final days of the regular season even more meaning and excitement to see if a conference will earn a 3rd or 4th wild card spot. Otherwise I think the playoff system works quite well as it sits and really shouldn't have to be modified unless for some reason we have an expansion or contraction of the league. It would be nice if there was some special bonus activity for the other playoff teams to do while the wild card series were going on, maybe some sort of media event covering the wild card games.

Kata Vilde was extremely inconsistent this past season, showing flashes of brilliance and promptly shitting the bed. With an almost maxed build it's tough to figure out where to improve Vilde but there is room in 2 areas, puck handling and penalty shots. Penalty shots don't play a major factor during the year but they are still important. You never know when a penalty save is going to get your team points in an overtime. Puck handling is a sketchy area for goaltenders, some swear to never put anything into this stat while others max it out without giving it a thought. Vilde has been rather conservative in his approach here over the seasons, just recently beginning to train in this area. He still has 3-4 points that can be gained here but the strategy will be to maybe improve a point at a time if he's been having a bad run of luck in the sim so it's more a luck changer at this stage. regardless vilde will have to be much better in the playoffs for the dragons to have a shot.

This would have to be Mike Izzy for Calgary without a doubt. 32 points in 20 games including 16 goals. 3 game winning goals and 2 game tying goals. 2nd in hits with 68. A hat trick. And even more amazing than all those other stats is an 18 game point scoring streak in the playoffs. A full 10 games longer than the next streak. The ancient Calgary captain really put the team on his back and really set an example for the young players on the Dragons as to how the game should be played. Not sure there's ever been a better power forward in SHL history but Izzy would certainly be at the top of that conversation without question. This is a complete no brainer choice for playoff MVP.

I'd like to get rid of the wild card series and just go back to having four teams in each conference make the playoffs. As things stand, the off-seasons are way too long for teams that don't make the playoffs, and I don't think having a couple extra teams make the playoffs outweighs that negative. Additionally, it just makes sense to have exactly half of the teams in the league qualify for the post-season. One downside to this would be that having the top two teams in each division make the playoffs could be unfair if one division is much stronger/weaker than the other. While this wasn't a problem last season, the SHL does tend to see extreme differences between divisions. To remedy that, the league could get rid of divisions altogether, and go back to having the top four teams in each conference make the playoffs. However, that would reduce the number of games between divisional rivals.

Who's the best player that you have witnessed in the SHL never to make it to the Challenge Cup finals? Or what player that hasn't made it to the finals is most deserving and why? Were they close? Was theirs a story of hearbreak? Is there still hope in the future? (150+ words)

Mikhail Lokitonov of the Toronto North Stars is the best player in the SHL. This past season, he single-handedly carried his team into the post-season, even winning a series against the favored Manhattan Rage, when everyone expected Toronto to be contending for the first overall pick. He's been an elite player for years, winning multiple Dar and Karpotsov trophies, but playoff success has eluded him, as the North Stars have not been a contending team throughout the duration of his career thus far. While Lokitonov is getting older, his play remains excellent, and as the North Stars' young core begin to develop, he should have the chance to make it to the Finals and potentially win a Challenge Cup within the next few seasons. He's won enough awards and had sufficient individual success to make it into the Hall of Fame, but to be considered among the all time great players, Lokitonov will need to add a Challenge Cup to his resume.

Which player from Calgary or Tampa Bay would you bet on to win a regular season individual award in a future season? What player and what award? What makes you think they'll live up to their potential and take home the hardware?

Both the Calgary Dragons and the Tampa Bay Barracuda have loads of talent on their rosters, including superstars such as Mike Izzy, Otis B. Driftwood, Flacklo Lagerfield, and Benjamin Blue, all of whom are among the very best players in the SHL. These players are the type to win individual awards, but they are all into regression, and on the decline of their careers. Therefore, I will predict that Oliver Cloutier of the Barracuda will win a Karpotosov trophy at some point. With Lagerfield regressing, Tampa needs one of their young players to step up and I think Cloutier has the skill and work ethic to do that.

A. Each team enters these finals with a red hot superstar - longtime league legend Mike Izzy for Calgary and surprise breakout star Gunnar Soderberg for Tampa Bay. Which of these players will have a more dominant finals?
Mike Izzy will have the more dominant finals. Izzy is still one of the top players in the league, and has a long, proven track record of excellence in the regular season and the playoffs. While Soderberg has had a bit of a coming out party this season, he is still not the same calibre of player that Izzy is.

B. Kata Vilde and Benjamin Blue are two of the best goaltenders in the league - which team has the advantage in net?
Both Vilde and Blue are top goaltenders, but Blue is probably the best goaltender in the SHL. The former league MVP put up another Mcbride-worthy season, with a .919 save percentage, 27 wins and a staggering 6 shutouts to guide his team to the playoffs. Vilde had respectable numbers but just can't compare to Blue.

Finally, Harvey Danger is recognized for all of his great hockey playing achievements. As a member of the Texas Renegades, I will be choosing to go to Tampa Bay to cheer on the Tampa Bay Barracuda and fellow S42 draftee Maui in his quest to win his first championship. I have been to Calgary in the past, but it is a garbage city with a terrible smell. Tampa Bay is not much better, but it's warm all year round and the mature ladies need a hot young stud like myself. I'm not a guy who likes to watch hockey when my team is out, so is basketball still happening? Are the Jacksonville Jaguars playing somewhere? I would likely skip the game and watch some WNBA or cricket or something else. Does Tampa have an MLS team? I will likely drink a lot too, because of my sadness and jealousy of not playing a playoff game myself for a while. (159)

Nobody wants to see the Calgary Dragons win anything, and spoiler alert, it was disappointing to see them come back and win. You want to see a team that has been at the bottom recently and worked hard to rebuild get rewarded. It's been tough for them, and they were so close. As someone who has been out of the playoffs for a while now, the offseason drags on. We need less playoffs, not more. First thing we could do is reduce the Wild Card round, or get rid of it altogether. A 1 game playoff is all we need for four vs. 5, or stick to the 4 team playoffs. Perhaps it could be more of a baseball playoffs. Division Champs automatically get in, with the next top two teams in the Conference qualify in a Division winner vs. Wild Card situation. Winners of those two playoff series play each other for the conference championship, and then the winners meet each other in the SHL finals. We could also get rid of playoffs altogether, with the best team in the shl winning the league like in soccer. Or get rid of divisions and have the top 4-8 teams play each other in the playoffs. There is quite a few options available for a made up league like this one. (168)

The biggest thing that Harvey Danger needs to improve is his leadership, especially as we move into S51 as the oldest and longest reigning member of the Texas Renegades. There is going to be a bigger need for leadership as we welcome newer and younger members into the locker room, and management will need Danger to step up if they are ever going to be a competitive team again. In terms of skills on the ice, Danger will continuously work on his skating until it maxes out, which it will sometime in S51. Once his skating gets up to 99, there will not be much more that Danger can do to improve himself, meaning that he will enter his prime with regression still two seasons away. He's not going to get much better, and the hope is that this will help the club win a few games and teach the young kids how to play in the best league in the world. (162)

Austin Roenick is a good bet for a player to win a future award for the Tampa Bay Barracuda. He's a sniper who models himself after a young Nikita Kucherov, and will certainly be a top goal scorer in the SHL. Will he win the top goal scorer (the Jay MacDonald Trophy) or for the most points in the SHL (Sergei Karpotsev Trophy)? Maybe, maybe not, but he certainly is worth the bet among those other players from Tampa Bay. On the Calgary side, Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova has the best chance to win a trophy, and most likely it would be one of the goaltender ones. He's a safe bet, as Calgary looks to be good for years to come. (119)

Tampa Bay baby!! Here we come. Game 1 in Tampa, we are going to have a night on the town. @JNH ,Westbroook, and @BDonini,Lallo, are coming with me as per usual and we are going to get Westy really drunk cause that is always a lot of fun. The first thing we do is fly in a day or two early and hit up the Florida Aquarium, cause we hear @sköldpaddor ,Gunnar is able to chill with us for a day before the game. Being all from the same draft class we all know that Gunnar is a big softy for the animals, so we thought a day watching him cry about how cute the turtles are would be a riot. Then the 4 of us are all going to head out to Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, since the Eggman is paying we are going all out. A half dozen of the West Coast and a half Dozen of the East Coast oysters, some caviar and something called The Big Eddie, king crab legs, Maine lobster tails. Then we all get the 22oz Prime Bone-In Ribeyes. Of course, we are washing that down with the finest wine. As the night ends, we all wish Gunny a best of luck and head to the hotel to sleep off the drink before Game 1.

Strength both on and off the puck was a big issue in Corey Kennedy’s game this season. I wasn’t used to getting top line minutes, so there was a bit of a weakness in my game. Conditioning, strength, and body checking are what I am furiously working on this off season. This should allow for me to be a better player without the puck and allowing myself to work those long shifts. My plus minus wasn’t great, because I was getting tired or getting beat by stronger forwards on the puck. This will benefit the team as my minutes are not going to be decreasing so I need to be more responsible while on the ice. If I can stop the negative games, we will get scored on less and therefore should win more games. The more games we can win the better we will be and the more likely we can keep players and sign players and win. Winning is the goal, right?

A. Each team enters these finals with a red hot superstar - longtime league legend Mike Izzy for Calgary and surprise breakout star Gunnar Soderberg for Tampa Bay. Which of these players will have a more dominant finals?

Gunnar Soderberg is the future, but I think Mike Izzy is the now. As much as I love Gunny and think he will be the next way of crazy good forwards, Izzy is more of a complete player right now. Hopefully they both have a really good final. We will see who will come out on top though.

B. Kata Vilde and Benjamin Blue are two of the best goaltenders in the league - which team has the advantage in net?

Benjamin Blue and Kata Vilde are two of the best goalies in the league and are facing each other in this years Challenge Cup. I think that Benjamin Blue has the advantage in the finals because his defense is a bit stronger. Calgary has proven to be streaky which could lend to Tampa Bays advantage. We will see if they can hold on to win the cup.

C. Do you expect this to be a high-scoring series or a low-scoring series? A mix? Do you think it'll be competitive or will one team run away with it?

I think it will be very competitive. Both teams want to win and have good teams. It is the tale of two different approaches, however. Tampa Bay is very young, minus a few players, where Calgary is a bit of a more veteran squad. I think it will be a high scoring series with very close games.

D. What's your favorite player NAME on either team? why? (note: not who's your favorite player. which player name)

This is the easiest answer here. It is obviously Shooter McGavin, not only it a legendary golfer and name, but it was good nice they had to do it twice. Both teams having a player named Shooter McGavin how is this not the number one topic in the thread? Cause it definitely should be.

E. If you could choose any one of the following four options, which would you pick? 1. A chicken parm sandwich from Esa 2. A tray of cookies from c00kies 3. A custom feet pic from JSS 4. An hour long stick and puck session with Jepox

1. A chicken parm from Esa. First off the Jersey Italian in me could never turn down a hot, fresh, juicy, and cheesy chicken parm. Now I want a chicken parm, whether or not Esa is there is really not important. Though we could get down on some hot parms and talk Rangers hockey.

Congrats to the Calgary Dragons for reverse sweeping the Tampa Bay Barracuda. This was a crazy intense and incredible series. Tampa Bay rocketed to the lead and didn’t want to give any ground in the first three games. Everyone was sure it was going to be over, but the veteran leadership in Calgary had other things to say. The Dragons came climbing back to win game 4, then game 5, then somehow game 6. This was incredible, were we about to see a reverse sweep in the finals. The last game came up and yes, it happened, the Calgary Dragons eat the Tampa Bay Barracuda to reverse sweep. I think Mike Izzy gets credit for MVP as he carried his team for most of the playoffs. Led his team in Points, Hits, and Goals.

This isn't technically offered as an option in the question, but fuck it: I'm going to Game 2 in Tampa and Game 3 in Calgary. There's no better contrast between the miserably cold weather in Alberta and the miserably hot weather in Florida.
As for running up the tab? Constant room service. Hell, make it room service on the go. I'm hiring a personal servant to follow me around and make sure my every whim is satisfied. I'd like to imagine they'd have a bucket of caviar in one hand, and several ironed shirts in the other, ready to offer me a fresh white shirt if mine gets stained with caviar. Do I get messy when eating caviar? Nope. I don't even like it. I'd just dump it on my shirt because fuck it, comped.
This is all without mentioning the private performances from local theater actors (gotta support the arts), personal roulette table and croupier, luxury rented sportscar that I would trash while trying to dump caviar on my shirt, and hiring a blimp to fly over both cities letting everyone know that the Halifax Raiders are better than either team. ■

After a slow start to the regular season, the Dragons have surged of late and have rallied around the #CalgaWe notion of togetherness. On the other side, the Barracuda battled through a difficult East and are led by a very strong young core. Which team are you personally rooting for to take home the Challenge Cup and why?

So one of the things I’ve noticed coming into the league in the last couple of seasons has been just how important your rookie/junior locker room is in forming relationships and connections with people in the league, especially with alumni. Case in point: my answer to this question is largely determined by the people in the Halifax locker room, which counts a few Barracuda and Dragons players among them. Esa and Rublic (Rush) are there representing Calgary, and Kalakar (Kholin) and ztevans (Z. Evans) represent Tampa Bay. I like all of these people and want them to succeed, and since I don’t really want to play favourites, I’ve found myself rooting for both teams.
Given the series is over, I obviously know the outcome, and so I’m really happy that the Dragons managed to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the series to take the Championship Cup… but at the same time, I feel really bad that the Barracuda lost, especially in that way. ■

Are there any changes to the playoff format you'd like to see implemented? More wild cards? Move to a single-elimination to bring about even more chaos? 999-game series to minimize chaos? Be creative!

Creativity taken into account, I'd like to see the league move to a system where the series doesn't end until one of the teams has scored a benchmark of goals. Let's say... 32. So if it's Seattle vs Rochester, for example, and the first four games end 8-2, 8-3, 8-1, 8-0 (respectively), then great! Seattle moves on. But who could ever say no to a game 13 in a playoff series? It would really reward scoring, to the point where a team could lose three out of four games and still move on. Imagine: Seattle beats Rochester 8-0 in the first game, and loses the next four games by a score of 7-6, 8-6, 8-6, and 7-6. Seattle moves on because they've reached that 32 goal mark before Rochester, who end the series with 30 goals scored. Or if the series had every game end in 3-2, it would take a team a minimum of 10 games plus some of an 11th to move to the next round. Isn't that fun? Did I mention this is a terrible idea? ■

Due to some controversial calls during the playoffs, the league is looking at updating the current rules(icing, offside, etc) What new rule or change to a room would you implement to better the game?

It's tough to answer this question because I'm not sure whether it's meant to be in terms of hockey played on the ice or hockey as represented by STHS.

If it's hockey on the ice: I'd like to see the blue lines done away with in favour of just a red line. Or even to have blue lines done away with altogether. There's already the option of having a forward parked at the opponent's blue line to cherry pick. With this change, you'd be able to move that cherry picking forward up towards the opponent's net. I'm not sure if it would be worth it, though, because you're just going to wind up playing shorthanded in your own zone in a defensive situation. So not a whole lot would change for the worse, but for the better we'd be getting rid of offsides which are boring as shit and hurt the flow of the game.

If it's hockey represented by STHS: I'd like to see better description of the play in between goal action, shots, hits and faceoffs. Things like odd-man rushes or even zone clearances, to get a better picture how the play is developing or has developed. When you look at the 'play-by-play' in a game sheet, there are sometimes minute long gaps between "Player A wins the faceoff vs Player B" and "Player C ices the puck" that leave me wondering what the hell happened in between? This is especially apparent when writing play-by-plays. You can always just make stuff up, which is what I've done in both my PBPs, but it couldn't hurt to have that information generated by the sim engine. ■

Which player from Calgary or Tampa Bay would you bet on to win a regular season individual award in a future season? What player and what award? What makes you think they'll live up to their potential and take home the hardware?

I feel like it's an easy call to say that Benjamin Blue would probably wind up winning an award for best goalie again in the future considering he's already won it twice in the last five seasons. I'd say Flacko Lagerfield would have a good chance at winning an MVP award, as he's been a really strong player in fantasy recently and that player has the ability to put up big points. Also, won the MVP two seasons ago...

Mike Izzy is a big game player, and has it in him to maybe win another MVP before he retires. Otis B. Driftwood and Kristaps Ball are two strong defensemen that have the potential to top the league on the blueline, as Ball did a couple of seasons ago. ■

I have two favorites, one from each team, but both for the same reason: both Atlas Rush and Benjamin Blue are weird enough to stand out but I can actually see them being the names of real life hockey players. Of course, I'm opening myself up to completely missing a reference in either name, but I like to think Atlas was named by a parent that was way into geography... or maybe someone that wanted their kid to take over the world. And Benjamin Blue has strong alliteration and a neat color for a last name you don't see often (like ___ Black, ___ White, or ___ Green.) ■

Welp, you waited until the last day to grind out your CW and the CC finals are longggggggg over by now. congrats to [TEAM], woo! Reflecting back on the series, who gets your vote for series MVP? Make the case why this player deserves it over any other.

Even though Kata Vilde had a rough couple of games to start the series, they got better as it went on. They were great in game 3 in a narrow loss to the Dragons, and then knocked it out of the park in critical games 4 and 5, with a .971 and .976 save percentage respectively. It's tempting, of course, to go with someone like Izzy who can lead the offense or Driftwood who had a couple of great performances later in the series, but your goalie's typically on the ice for all game, every game. When you're on the ropes and there's nothing between you and elimination, you want your goalie to be your best player, and I think that's who Vilde was. ■

1. I'm for sure going to Tampa to see these finals games that's the squad that drafted me and your damn right I'm gonna party it up in that beautiful city and paint the town barracuda running everything up on the gms tab. its gonna be a celebration for sure my first time in Tampa since I was drafted and I'm gonna invite some of my junior buddies Phineas Gold for sure because well when you wanna party you need that guy with you no doubt he fins the chicks and the Narcotics so looking foreword to a great time down there gonna see how much free booze I get in the box suite and just all in all be a complete animal. also hoping for some barracuda wins hopefully I can celebrate with the team and meet some more players really hope everything works out and the trip isn't cancelled gonna be a great time 10/10 would recommend.

3. I think the league should take a smaller playoff structure but not entirely hear me out now top teams from each conference go on the conference final automatically for finishing number one respectively.
the rest of the teams that get in play until that point making finishing number 1 worth it in the long run. the bottom teams would start with a one game playoff wildcard for entry and move on accordingly giving you more reason to have a good regular season to many times in my opionion you don't see a strong regular season mean anything ever. but that's pretty much it id like a more improved formula for regular season success and playoff teams reduced to ten with 2 entry games (4 teams) 2 conference final byes (2 teams ) and 4 teams left over to fight it out with the 2 wildcard winners in the end it may be a bit messy but again it gives credence to finishing highly during the regular season and cuts down on the so called cinderella story

5.my rule change is simple floating offsides once your team passes the blue line you have control over the offensive zone until the puck comes past the center ice line. this rule will really help open up the game and keep the pressure on teams to play solid in there own end top tier players will love it fans as well it will increase scoring and coaches may lose there job over it but its all about the stars baby. this rule would also make goalies have to hold up there end of the bargain for the team as well seeing as the team would have complete control over one side of the ice the goalie would inertly have to be willing to play the puck more and get comfortable with that aspect of there game I think all in all it is something the league outta look into nothing better than goals right it would defiantly sell tickets and make the game easier to sell.

7. this off season I really hope to advance my scoring ability and skating so far I'm a very crisp passer in the smjhl but that finish just hasn't been there in my game hopefully with some help from my team captain I can rectify that area of my game. this off season me and Phineas are working on one timers and puck control in traffic it should help me bury some of those glorious chance tom fiddler give me on the regular if these drills can help my scoring our team could be unstoppable next season. so far our team is littered with guys who can score so until this point I've really focused on setting them up but my skating hasn't exactly been the best ive got to get stronger in that area now and the leg workouts I've been doing with our other captain joe Weston has given me a great deal of confidence heading into season 51. this is going to be a special year for myself I really do believe.

8. id have to go with mike izzy or shooter mcgavin both are excellent players in the league and at the top of there tier in terms of top end talent and it really doesn't get much better than these two. im sure you could argue for other players but these guys are right up there for awards every year and have made more than a name for themselves within the shl. between the two id have to go with mr izzy hes a foreward and of course has more of a chance to rack up big nights against oppenents so that would have to be my choice sure fire hall of famer I tell ya.

2. easy its Tampa they drafted me a lotta real swell people there want my team to take home the cup baby beat those dragons YEAH. but really it would be nice for my team to win its a great atmosphere there and I hope to contribute one day on the big club I was there first draft pick last season and it means a lot to me. hopefully next season I can build on whatever the outcome may be and become a player that helps get them back to the finals next season a lotta fire power there just really hope I can fit in. who knows may be 2 more seasons before I get there but I am looking foreward to IT!!!!

Calgary is a bit of a shithole with nothing to do so I'm going to FLORIDA BABY. Tampa is probably a pretty nice and warm city, so first thing I'm doing is heading to the Gucci store and buying some shorts and a nice polo shirt. Gotta look sharp if I'm heading to Amalie Arena $7,000 suite to watch the game in comfort. While I'm there I obviously have to eat, so lets buy a couple things of overpriced stadium food, say a hotdog and some nachos. Next we obviously have to see a football game, not something you can do in Chicago so let's get the most expensive suite at the football stadium, which I've heard goes for around 33,000. Now, hopefully we have enough time to watch the Lightning get eliminated in 4 by Columbus, and we have to get front row seats to see that misery of a series. Finally we have to fly back to Chicago, but let's make a pit stop in Dubai first and fly Emirates first class.

Personally I have to cheer for my real life home town Calgary. Calgary has been looking for a cup for a while, and have some good people on the team, not to mention SHL legend and my personal hero Mike Izzy. Izzy has been the face of the franchise for a while, and with the amount of work he's put into the league he deserves a cup. However, I don't hate the barracuda, they also have some amazing people on the team including pris and their general manager Jepox. Overall I won't be upset if either team loses, and I'll be happy if either team wins, just a little more happy if Calgary wins.

Take us over to one of those realities in which everything is the same but these S50 playoffs have unfolded differently. What happened in this reality's playoffs and who's in the Challenge Cup over there?
To explain this sudden change in the universal laws, we have to look back to the regular season and the wacky things that happened in Chicago. First of all, all star Cameron Carter 2 lights up the season, breaking SHL records along the way. He scores over 90 points and 300 hits on his way to unanimously win the Dar, which is the weirdest thing about that statement. However, it wasn't only CC2 who picked it up. The whole Syndicate organization had a fire in their play, all players posting career seasons in the 52-0 season and a goal differential of +300. Come playoff time they crushed everyone in their way. The Buffalo Stampede and New England Wolfpack are no match for CC2 and his level of play, and Chicago easily makes it to the finals, where they face a Calgary Dragons team with Mike Izzy leading the way, fueled on big parm. Chicago takes this series as well, but not without a fight, as the series goes to 7 games.

Well, I think this player should be obvious, and that player is the best player on the Chicago Syndicate, and is possibly the best player in the world, Cameron Carter 2, also known as 10 by 10. The should-be dar nominee has been tearing it up in the SHL. He's one of the best players on the ice even when he's on the bench, and was the only player in the league to finish with over 200 shots, 200 hits and 20 shots blocked, or a triple double. There definitely is hope for CC2 though, as Chicago is a young team on the come up with players like Jules Watt, Corey Kennedy, Nick Connolly, Ryan Shepard, and the Smeb brothers. The future is bright for the young Syndicate team, and if Cameron Carter 2 sticks it out, he will surely be rewarded with a cup finals, and potentially even the Challenge Cup.

The series and playoff MVP has to go to Mike Izzy, Dragons legend. Mike Izzy was instrumental to Calgary's reverse sweep, putting up points in every single game of the finals. The consistency shown by him throughout the playoffs, and his dedication to Calgary certainly proves that he should be the series MVP. With 32 points in the playoffs, split evenly between goals and assists he's shown his offensive flair, and over 25% of those points came in the finals. Mike Izzy can certainly step up when needed. He also played a strong defensive game, throwing his body 68 times and getting in front of 6 shots while playing big minutes certainly proves he was the most valuable player to Calgary.

Ya boy, Slip McScruff, is going to take the homestand in Tampa to warm up a bit.  It really gets frozen into your bones playing half your games in Winnipeg over the course of a season and Calgary isn't much of a relief from that.  However, I really have no idea what to do in Tampa besides not wear mittens.  I'd start with a bit of food tourism to guide me around to new places, then see what I can dig up around the food spots.

I found a Dine & Wine tour around some place called Riverwalk, which seems like exactly the kind of tourist hell hole I want to find myself in.  It mentions this historic Henry B. Plant Museum which I thought was a museum about plants, but it appears to be about some rich dead guy.  There is an upcoming exhibit called "Henry Plant: He's More Important Than You Thought", so I think this one is a can't miss experience.

To round it all out, I have to check out a ghost tour in every city I visit, so that will be on the list to check out.  From what I can tell online, there will be the ghost of bandits and buccaneers which makes sense given the football team.

I find it really hard to root for a division rival, but I am cheering for a few individuals on the Calgary team.  As the Federation Head of the blessed United States of America, I want my true American heroes, Otis B. Driftwood and Nicky Pedersen Jr., to take home that cup.  If they are going to come to my team totally exhausted, I want them to be riding the high of a cup win straight onto international ice.  Tampa Bay has a decidedly un-American roster, including both Federation Heads for Russia.  Although I chose to visit the Tampa homestand, I would like them to kindly lose and be off their game come IIHF time.

Are there any changes to the playoff format you'd like to see implemented? More wild cards? Move to a single-elimination to bring about even more chaos? 999-game series to minimize chaos? Be creative!

More wildcard spots would have been great for me since we missed playoffs this season, but I don't think I would like to cheapen the regular season like that.  Given the nature of STHS, just making it in the door means some crazy shit can happen and the bottom seed can go the whole way.  On the same note, I wouldn't want a whole season to come down to single game unless we went through the dramatic build up to game seven first.

It may be interesting to try a double elimination style to make up for STHS being such a fickle thing.  So the 1st and 2nd place in every division would start in the upper bracket, each 1st taking the 2nd from the opposite division in their conference.  When someone loses in the upper bracket, they fall to the lower bracket.  For the first round in the lower bracket, the four upper bracket losers play four wild card teams.  When someone loses in the lower bracket, they are out of the playoffs.  Then, the lower bracket plays an extra round to get down to two, since there will only be two upper bracket losers to fall through.  This pattern repeats until we have the winner.

What is appealing here is that placing high in your division basically earns you an extra life, so the regular season becomes very important.  If you've done well in the regular season, one fluky series will not knock you out, it just makes it a whole lot harder to win.

There's an extra variant where we could have all teams make the playoffs and the first round of the lower bracket is actually a single game elimination, but I think that runs counter to the idea of making the regular season very important.

In one alternate reality, the Los Angeles Panthers do not go on a run to end the season and the Jets make it into the wild card spot.  Then they lose to the Calgary Dragons and everything else is the same.

In another reality, Eggy goes power mad and makes the playoffs into a double elimination bracket like my previous answer, which means the Jets and the Wolfpack are both in the wild card.  The first round in the west goes the same, Calgary beats San Francisco and New Orleans beats Edmonton.  However, that means San Francisco gets to play Winnipeg and Edmonton gets to play Los Angeles to stay in the playoffs.  The matchups are shuffled in the east, Tampa Bay beats Buffalo and Hamilton beats Manhattan.  Buffalo gets New England and Manhattan gets Toronto in the lower bracket.

The lower bracket plays two rounds to thin the herd.  San Francisco against Winnipeg is a toss up based on the regular season, splitting the season series and matching GF / GA.  Coin flip picks Winnipeg.  Edmonton takes Los Angeles based on regular season.  For the same reason, New England beats Buffalo.  Toronto beats Manhattan like they did in the real playoffs.  So we have Winnipeg vs Edmonton and New England vs Toronto.

Winnipeg and Edmonton also split the season series, each getting two regulation wins and a shoot out win, but Winnipeg has two more goals, so we take it.  New England and Toronto are another split series, but New England takes it in goals by five.

At this point, the upper bracket is identical, so New Orleans and Hamilton are falling to the lower bracket.  New Orleans and Winnipeg is a classic match up and another split series.  Winnipeg has it by one goal this time instead of two.  Hamilton has the edge over New England with two regular wins instead of one regulation and one shoot out.

Lower bracket plays again to thin the herd, Winnipeg vs Hamilton.  First time we cross conferences, but again Winnipeg has a split series.  Winnipeg gets it by a coin toss, guaranteeing third place at least.

Calgary in seven, Tampa Bay has to play Winnipeg for a chance at the rematch.  On the regular season, Tampa Bay smokes Winnipeg, so it's a rematch for the cup.

Going by the regular season, Tampa Bay takes it over Calgary in the rematch.

Due to some controversial calls during the playoffs, the league is looking at updating the current rules(icing, offside, etc) What new rule or change to a room would you implement to better the game?

There were some really painful offside calls during the playoffs.  Goals were called back left and right for plays that took 15 minutes to review.  In one case, almost a full minute of game time was called back because a player was one centimeter offside while kicking the puck up to his stick and that wasn't "possession".  The league has really leaned into the letter of the law, rather than the intent and it hurts the game.  Once a coach has issued a challenge, refs are focused on getting it right down to the letter of the law because of the penalty for getting the challenge wrong.  Coaches already feel slighted because of the suspect goal, but they might get a penalty on top of it instead of having the goal scrubbed.

I think maybe the review should be more normalized and less strict.  After every goal, the refs should take 30 seconds to verify zone entry and the goal itself (interference, high stick).  If they think the goal is suspect, they can initiate their own extended review.  The coach's have a strong bias to have goals scrubbed from a technicality so even if a minor infraction doesn't have a real impact on the play, they will challenge it.  However, the refs have no bias so they can use their sense for when a goal needs some attention.

As competition ramps up for the playoffs, players (both those still in and those eliminated) work extra hard to improve areas of their game that are lacking. What one area of your game do you really needs to focus on improving and how will this benefit the team?

The area with the most room left for improvement is my checking and strength tandem, with more emphasis on strength.  In recent training, it has taken the back seat to my offensive utility toolbox because of my unique situation.  Although I am in the top three defensemen on the team in terms of overall skill, I found myself playing down in the bottom pairing because my skill set was redundant with the two ahead of me.  Down on the third pairing, my defensive skills already had me blocking shots at the highest rate and delivering all the hits from my pair.  So I rounded out my passing and scoring to try and provide some offensive upside.

However, in this coming season or two, I may find myself finally passing Grease in skill as he regresses.  That means I need to work extra hard to max out my defensive strengths that I was able to cruise on while down in the lineup.  I think I have put myself on a good trajectory to make a clean transition into his old role as we have very similar skill sets and I was able to use this past season to shore up my offensive liabilities.
