Smirnov / Platoon Offseason + Presser

Ales Smirnov will be making his way to the SHL this season. This will be Ales Smirnovs first season in the SHL. The past two season have been a great experience for Ales. In his first season with the Kelowna Knights Ales was playing third line minutes. Ales was able to put up 20 points during the season, and another 4 points in playoffs. His first season saw the Knights win the presidents trophy and the four star cup. Ales also took home an individual award for top media member in the SMJHL. In Ales’ second season, the knights would finish second during the regular season. Ales would finish fourth in most points, with a total of 48 points. The Kelowna knights would then go on too sweep both rounds of the playoffs and secure their second four star cup in back to back seasons. Ales would finish 2nd in playoff scoring with 12 points in 8 games. Only to be bear by Sterling Knight who had 9 games played and 13 points. Ales had the best points per game total during the playoffs!

This has been a big off season for Ales. Ales put a lot of work into his game. His off season training saw him really improve his skating, and puck handling. While rounding out other important stats like passing, scoring and endurance. This was an important off season for Ales’ cause as mentioned he will be making the big step into the SHL!

Ales plays for the West Kendall Platoon, and to their own they had a pretty successful season. West Kendall jumped off to a hot start at the begging of the season which really helped them, this hot start basically secured them a playoff birth. After their hot start they did cool down significantly, finishing the season on a rough patch. Going into the playoffs the Platoon were able to make it past the first round against the the Chiefs. Although they were not as lucky in the second round when they faced the Rage. The rage would have a pretty dominant series, which would ultimate see the Rage beat the Platoon, and then go onto and win the Challenge Cup.

Even though the Platoon had one of their better seasons, and things were on the up for the Platoon, the off season would not bring positives. It would see two of their players leave for texas in Petty, and 701. It would also see a third departure of Ratzon. Luckily enough Ratzon agreed to do a trade and sign to help the platoon out. The platoon would trade Ratzon and 2nd round pick to edmonton, for Wahlstrom and 1st round pick. This move was very beneficial for the Platoon, if Ratzon was just to leave with no return for West Kendal they would have been crippled . This was not the end to the bad news with West Kendal, as goaltender Schmidt had some papers mix up, and we set back in his off season training, and actually regressing this season.

Onto the positives of this season, the draft. West Kendall would have the 2nd overall pick from Hamilton. With this pick West Kendal was able to bring arguably the best player in the draft, if not the best defensemen. They pick Victor Svensson at number two from the Kelowna Knights. Victor played a pivotal part for the Knights this season, from big 5x5 minutes, to power play and penalty kill. Victor will see himself spotted somewhere in the top four this season with west kendall . The next pick west kendall had was at number 17. The platoon went back to the Knights and picked up Slappy Mcdoodle. Slappy played mostly a 3rd line shut down role with the knights this season. Slappy is the definition of a shut down center. He has great passing and defensive skills. Slappy will be back down with the Kelowna Knights this season, trying to help them secure the three peat.

Back to our feature player, Ales Smirnov. Ales will be slotting into the top six this season with west kendall, and will be expected to carry a decent load for the team. We can expect Ales to ales receive some special teams play. Ales should be a strong candidate for rookie of the year this season. Having a strong off season, and playing top 6 minutes will help him out greatly.

As for West Kendall it is hard to say how their season will go. They lost some great players, and had a set back in net. Will West Kendall make the playoffs? Who knows, but if they do, every player will have to give it their all. As for Ales, he will have to step outside of his comfort zone and play a much bigger game then has been playing in juniors.

If there are any questions for Ales, you may ask now.

How do you feel you have contributed to Russia's IIHF performance?

Uhm, well I think my performance has been okay? I have scored 3 goals, but other then that I haven't done to much. I do think with my off season training I will be able to help the team out a lot more then I have currently. I know my strength is passing, so it is kind of frustrating that I have not recorded a single apple this tourny, but hopefully my game will only improve with time!

Code:
Where will Smirnov start in West Kendall?

Smirnov will probably slot in on the second line RW. The same spot I am playing for Russia. I will most likely see some powerplay time as well. As for the penalty kill, I am not sure if I will make it onto any of those units.

Code:
React to Russia's decision to include Sasha-Alexei Smirnov in the lineup at first opportunity.

Well it will be interesting to see if he is active. He will definitely have to train hard, to catch up in tpe levels. But you gotta be happy to see a fresh body hit the ice for russia, that always helps.

Code:
Smirnov? Why'd you steal my name?
Code:
Yes I would like to know too.
Well both of your "Smirnov" players are gone, it was about time another Smirnov stepped into the league to represent the Smirnov name. But in all honesty I did not know there was so many past Smirnov players. Smirnov was always the play by play name I used for my be a pro in NHL. So it naturally just followed me here! <3.

Main goal for the upcoming season?

Honestly just not to be a bust. West Kendall will have a tough season for the reasons mentioned above. So I just have to make the most I can out of the opportunity that I am given, and try to help the team. Also, I know my word does not bring much power in this league, but try to big a brighter light to West Kendall, as it is a good group of guys, and when things were finally going WKP way, they got hit with a set back.

Code:
Who do you predict will win the roty this season?
Well off the top my head there our only 4 rookies that really come to mind, including me. Theres Sterling Knight, Pavel Bursyuk, Harry and Me. Im not sure what kind of situation they are in, playing time wise. But I know that I will be given top 6 minutes and special teams. Harry will be given good playing time as well, but he is coming in straight out of the draft, so he is behind in TPE.

Code:
Why is WKP a great place to be?
There is just a great group of guys! There is a solid core. Bojo does everything he can for the team, and he always has quick links setup for important things. With the addition of Harry to the team, the LR took a huge boost. Harry is a great guy, and will be an important piece as well!

Code:
Why is ales Smirnov the best Smirnov?
Well that is yet to be determined, and im not on to brag. lol . uhm Alex Smirnov player 6 season, so Im think I can pass that. As for Smirnov Light im not sure how long he played, but he has a decent amount of awards! So only time will really tell !

Code:
With the departures of some key players in the off season do you think you are prepared to step up into a bigger role?

Well it will be tough forsure. But spending that extra season in junior has really helped my development. I had a strong season for training and really made some big gains in my game. Coming off another great junior season leaves me with a lot of confidence, so I hopefully I can bring that with me into the SHL. I have also had some success in the IIHF tourny so that has helped me adjust to playing against bigger and faster players as well!

Alex Smirnov was a legend, he didnt do much but score an OT winner in an SMJHL all star game. Beat that.
