West Kendall Platoon Draft Review Second Overall ( Round 1, Pick #2 ) Damien Wert – St. Louis Scarecrows – Canadian With the second overall pick of the season 24 draft, the West Kendall Platoon picked Damien Wert. Wert is a 6’2, 200 pound left winger, from Vancouver British Columbia. Damien’s game revolves around scoring goals, something that West Kendall deeply needed in a prospect. Damien is not the most physical player in the draft, but he is a great skater, and has a great set of hands to go a long with his skills. In Damien’s rookie season in junior, playing for the St. Louis Scarecrows he averaged around, 20 minutes per game. Wert played on the Crows first line right wing spot, and left wing on the second unit power play. In 40 games with the crows this season Wert put up 8 goals, an 15 assists for 23 points. Which put him in 7th for team scoring as a rookie! Werts point totals might not blow anyone away, but it is his work ethic that got him drafted second overall. Wert has been one of the most dedicated prospect, in his ability to keep improving his game and working hard. Excpect Wert is expected to play in all situations for the Crows next season, and look for him to average around a point per game. Wert will most likely make the jump to the SHL in season 25! Fourteenth Overall ( Round 2, Pick #2) Anton Federov - St. Louis Scarecrows – Russian With the Fourteenth overall pick of the draft, West Kendall looked back to the Scarecrows roster for another play. This time around it was Anton Federov, Anton was born in Moscow, Russia. Anton is 6’1, 195 pounds. Like Wert, Anton is also a left winger, that prides himself on putting the puck in the net. Antons skills are not as polished as Werts currently, but it is rumored that Anton has been mentored a bit by hall of fame player, Nick Fisher. Expect to see Antons game really improve over this next season. With Anton moving over to North America from Russia, he did not get much time to play during the SMJHL regular season. Anton only got to play 7 games, where he registered 2 points. A big point was not expected from Anton as firstly he has not adapted to the north American game yet. Also he was only averaging around 11 minutes of ice time per game. During playoffs for the Crows Anton put up 4 points in 13 games. Out of his 4 points, 3 of them were goals, which is nice to see for the young player. Expect Anton to take big step forward this season in terms of development and point production! Nineteenth Overall ( Round 2, Pick #7 ) Klaus Wagner – Montreal Impact - German With there second pick in round two, the Platoon decided to draft a German defenseman from the Montreal Impact, that man being Klaus Wagner, also known by his nickname, Der Erlkonig (The Erlking). Klaus is a big man on the back end coming in at 6’3, 225 pounds. Klaus is known as an offensive Dman. With that being said, Klaus’ game in his own end is really improving, he may not be the most physical player on the ice, but his foot speed, and positing are sound! Wagner, like Federov joined the SMJHL season late. Wagner however was able to get 31 games in this season for the Impact. Klaus was on the third D pairing for the Impact, but put up very good numbers! In 31 games, Wagner put up 15 points, 1 goal and 14 assists! We did mention how Wagner was not an overly physical defender, but he was not afraid to throw his body in front of the puck, picking up 31 shot blocks this season! With this upcoming season with Montreal expect Wagner to play top 4 minutes. Being able to spend a full season in the SMJHL this season will be a great asset for Wagner to round out his game before making the big jump! Twenty sixth Overall ( Round 3, Pick #2 ) Fife Gibbs – Vancouver Whalers – Scottish In the third round of the draft West Kendall took another defenseman, that man being Fife Gibbs. Gibbs is a 6’0, 217 pound defenseman, born in Stirling, Scotland. Gibbs is a two way defenseman, that keeps his cardio at a high level. Gibbs has great vision on the ice, and is always alert. Gibbs is not an overly physical defenseman, but he will use his body if needs too, Gibbs always has decent movement on the ice, but expect that to be a focus in his development. Gibbs is the third West Kendall Draftee to not play the whole season, Gibbs was only able to play 21 games this season, in a limited role for the Whalers, averaging just under 10 minutes per game. In those 21 games, Gibbs performance is not what he’d like it to be, total just one point, being a lone goal. Gibbs laid 14 hits, and had 15 shot blocks. Going into next season, expect Gibbs to slot into the top four, and play in more situations for the Whalers. Twenty Eighth Overall ( Round 3, Pick #4 ) Naeem Chamas – St. Louis Scarecrows - Lebanese No Image Found With their second pick in the third round, the Platoon went back to offense picking a left winger out of Lebanon. The player picked is Naeem Chamas, Chamas is a smaller player at 5’7, 155 pounds. Chamas once again is another scoring type player, however his passing skills are very close to his goal scoring attribute. With Chamas being so small, he is not a overly physical player, but he does it give it his all on the ice. Chamas played on the Crows for the whole season, but was not given much ice time at all, averaging only 5 minutes per game. Chamas was shooting at a very good 14%. Expect this upcoming season for Chamas to be very crucial for his development. Depending on how well he does this season will determine if he spends next season in the SHL or the SMJHL. Thirty Eighth Overall ( Round 3, Pick #2 ) Ryan Woito – Kelowna Knights - Canadian No image found With West Kendalls final pick in the draft they picked a 6’5, 200 pound defenseman, that man being Ryan Woito. Ryan scorings abilities for such a young defenseman are very rare. However Ryans defensive game could use some work, as he often seems lost in the defensive zone. Ryan is still such a raw talent, and will need to use this upcoming SMJHL season to polish his game. In his rookie season with the Kelowna Knights he has averaged just under 14 minutes per game, but a lot of that being power play time. Ryan was able to put 4 goals and 13 assists for 17 points, however out of his 17 points 10 of them came on the power play. We know Ryan can be a dominant player in the offensive zone, however we have yet to see the same effort and motivation in the defensive zone. We expect Ryan to improve his defensive gameplay in this upcoming season with the Knights. Code: 1210 Words </div>
