Looks complicated but it's very simple. Football needs to make it to the end of the field. 4 tries to get it past the first 10 yards. If you get past that 10 yard line you do it again 10 yards from where you were able to get. Repeat until you either score, lose the ball, or punt. Punts usually happen on the 4th attempt so that you don't lose the ball.
