Mattias Holmberg End of Season Presser
#1

After weeks of pressuring we have finally gotten Mattias Holmberg to do another press Interview. The last time we interviewed Holmberg he had just played his first two games with the Montreal Impact. In those two games he achieved one assist. Since then he has played in a total of 30 games, racking up 5 goals and 9 assists for a total of 14 points. Holmberg was traded to the Detroit Falcons along with a second round pick for Michael Burch and Jasper Clayton. In 4 games with Detroit Holmberg tallied 3 goals.

Holmberg has been working nearly 24/7 to improve and better himself. Coming into the league he was placed on the D-third line, but he has worked his way into D-first line minutes. With every passing week Holmberg improves himself and tries to better his game. The upcoming draft predicts that Holmberg could be a second or third round gen, but Holmberg shows no interest in when he is taken. He is happy to tell anyone that he is just focused on playing for his current team and would be honored to be drafted by any team in any round. We will start off with some pre-recorded question and answers, but will move on to an open question format.

Interview How do you feel your season went? Interview
I felt I did very well in my first season, even if I missed 3/5 of it. I contributed to my teams defensively and offensively, racking up 14 points and blocking 21 shots. I felt that was a strong season for a rookie D-man.

What do you think of the retiring of your former teammate Marcus Kincaid?
It's always sad to see the retirement of a young hockey player. He was a great player and teammate and it is just sad to see him leave the league.

How did you feel when you were first traded to Detroit?
I was sad. Even though I was told earlier by the Co-GM that a team was really interested in me I still was shocked. I never expected to be traded away from Montreal in my first season. What happens, happens though. I really enjoyed my time with the Impact and all the players were super friendly.

Speaking of Montreal, How do you feel about facing them in the first round of the SMJHL Playoffs?
It is going to be interesting to say the least. I notched a goal against them in our last game of the regular season so hopefully I can keep putting it past their goalies and help my teammates find holes in their defense. After playing 26 games with a team, you learn what makes your goalie tick and how to beat them. I'm hoping we can pull off the upset, but I still will gladly root for them in the playoffs.

How has it been adjusting to the new team environment?
It is weird going into a new locker room. It reminds me of the the first time I went into the Impact locker room. I didn't know anyone, but everyone was super friendly. It is always comforting to have a couple super swedes in the locker room so having Karlsson in the locker room is good. I already have an apartment picked out so hopefully I'm not traded again. It's weird how in Montreal nearly all the apartments I looked at had pools, but none of the apartments in Detroit have pools.

This question isn't really hockey related, but we heard that you play the bass. Is that true?
Yes it is. I picked up the bass guitar about a year ago and it is fun to just mess around and jam on when I have free time. It's just a way to relax and forget about hockey for awhile. You can pretend to rock star and play your favorite songs with an instrument. I usually just play my favorite bass lines from songs and not really put effort into learning entire songs. One of my favorite parts to play is the intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica.

At this point I'd like to open this presser up to open questions from the audience.

What do you expect to accomplish in the playoffs? Both as a team and an individual.
I expect to accomplish at least one win against Montreal. There is no doubt that everyone thinks we are the underdogs, but we just need to dig deep and prove everyone wrong. If we play as a unit, we can beat Montreal. I expect myself to play solidly defense wise, and
contribute as many points as I can to the team while in the offensive zone.

What are your plans for next season?
I plan on helping limit offensive chances in our zone. Without the two defense men, you only have 3 forwards and a goalie. You can't expect a goalie to stop every shot, sometimes you need to be the goalie and block the shot. Really my plans are just to play good defensive hockey while still contributing in the offensive zone.

Who are the leaders in the Detroit Locker Room?
I don't really know. Everyone seems helpful and active, but if I had to name one I guess it would be our GM Schmidt.

Any thoughts on what your role in Detroit might be like next season?
I have no clue what my role will be next season. I can easily adjust any role that the GM wants from me. Right now I am focused on playing.

Thing you miss the most from Montreal?
I think most people would agree with me when I say that I miss my teammates. You get to know them and start to learn about their personality. When you get traded you lose all that and you realize how much you enjoyed them.

Thing you like the most about Detroit?
I like the Wings. Go Pulkkinen!

How early do you think you will go in the draft?
I have no clue where I will be drafted.

Any teams you hope draft you?

I don't really know any of the teams, but I will be happy where ever I end up.

What do you think about the future in Detroit?

I haven't followed them or even been on the team long enough to know the answer. Hopefully we will be on top of the standings next season, but we won't know until it is all said and done.

What are you doing to get ready for the playoffs?
Listening to some punk and pirate metal. Eating some burgers and pigging out on junk food. I'm kidding mostly, but I am mostly just working on the weaker sides of my game and preparing my mind for the games ahead.
