We all know the big name SHL stars. The high scoring, award winning players. The Chico Salmon, Alonzo Garbanzo, Jakub Aittokallio types. They get all the recognition when their teams win and very little blame when they lose. We would all like to be a superstar player, but not everyone has that luxury. Some guys have to scratch and claw to achieve their goals. Those are the kind of guys that truly make the difference between a good team and a Championship team. It's about time these guys get the recognition that they deserve. Here is the official S27 SHL All-Heart Team…
Center:
- The Los Angeles Panthers just barely missed the playoffs in S27, but absolutely no blame should be put on their 3rd line center Kaapo Kekkonen. Kekkonen was the 20th overall draft pick in the S24 SHL draft, a steal where the Panthers got him. The team expects more production from Kekkonen in the future, but as of now he has lived up to what you would expect a late 2nd round pick to be. He earns every minute of ice time he is given. Expect to see his playing time raise from year to year as he continues to earn the trust of his GM and coach. When you have the kind of work ethic this kid has anything is possible.
Wing:
- Intars Ogle is what we in the business like to call a glue guy. He's not going to play a flashy game and wow the crowd with a silky smooth goal, but he does all the little things well. Ogle is a rarity in this day and age of the SHL. He was a draft eligible prospect S24 and went undrafted. After signing as a free agent with the Hamilton Steelhawks nobody could have imagined he would some day make the SHL squad. He helped his Halifax Raider team win the Four Star Cup in S26 and got the call up to the big leagues for S27. He has climbed his way to the SHL and the sky is the limit for Intars Ogle.
Wing:
- Brendan Gibbon, or "Gibby" as his Texas teammates call him is the heart and soul of the Renegades. The guy has been around since the dawn of time and he's still out there logging decent minutes for a SHL playoff team. It's unbelievable what he's been able to accomplish in his long as fuck career. He was once an all-star and now he is an inspiration to not only his teammates and the Renegades fans, but to all hockey fans across the world. It seems every off-season there is speculation of his retirement and he comes back for another season and shocks us all. Call me crazy, but I fully expect to see Gibby out there next year looking to win yet another Challenge Cup.
Defense:
- Peter Parker has been with the Seattle Riot franchise for over a decade now. When you think of the faces of the Riot over that time span names like Daniel Merica and Christoph Klose may come to mind, but if you ask any of those guys they will tell you Parker is the true face of the franchise. He's a very quiet guy in the locker room, on the ice and in the media, but when he speaks everyone listens. He commands respect everywhere he goes and his leadership can't be denied. If the Riot are to get back to being a true Challenge Cup contender Peter Parker will be an unsung reason why they do so.
Defense: :admirals: - Hans Ponsen
- It's bizarre to imagine that a former 1st round pick has had to rely on heart rather than skill to make it in the SHL, but that has been the case with Hans Ponsen. Going into the S23 SHL draft many experts believed that the drop off in skill level from the top 9 players was immense. They may not have been wrong about that, but they underestimated the heart of Ponsen. He's bounced around a little bit, but he's never let that interrupt his work ethic. He's also a quiet guy and unknown to much of the hockey world, but it's about time they start to realize how hard working a player Ponsen truly is. I don't expect him to be a star defenseman for the Admirals, but they have guys like Brumm and Vikingstod to fill those roles. Ponsen is the kind of guy that the Admirals should lock up for the long term future as soon as they possible can. Guy's a winner.
Goalie:
- Not many hockey fans had even heard of Phil Osgoode before S27. Another undrafted guy, but he went undrafted in the S20 mega draft nearly 8 seasons ago. Osgoode has really had to fight for the privilege to start in the SHL and he doesn't plan on forgetting that. He spent multiple seasons in juniors playing against kids much younger than himself, but he finally got the call to start for the Seattle Riot. It was unfortunate circumstances for the Riot as their expected starter for the foreseeable future retired due to personal issues that still have not been disclosed. Even with that unfortunate news they did not see much of a decline in production from the goaltending position with Osgoode between the pipes. It's been a long time coming for Osgoode and in his first season he led his team to a playoff birth. It'll be interesting to see if he can have a Tim Thomas-esque career or if he's just another Andrew Hammond.
Congratulations to those that made the S27 team. For those of you that didn't, work harder next year.

SO nice to see Ogle recognized. He hasn't gotten many minutes this season (we were forced to keep him up, since I knew he wouldn't clear waivers if I sent him to the minors), but he's a wonderful presence in our LR, and I'm very glad to have taken a chance on him.
