DRAFT RECAP AND ANALYSIS

Round 1
1. :admirals: Portland Admirals - FORFEITED

A real blow for Portland to lose this pick - it's led to a domino effect of virtually every quality player on the team being shipped out. Only 3 seasons into its existence, this team is already in rebuild mode. Future looks bleak.

2.

New England Wolfpack - BENNETT JONES

In the days leading up to the draft, pundits were touting the likelihood of Jones becoming the de facto #1 pick. New England continues its recent tradition of targeting high-performing first gens, bringing in someone who not only is driven to improve weekly, but someone they are confident will be a fit in the Locker Room. Jones might have been off some team's radars given that he played in the shithole that is PGF, but hey, maybe NEW just wanted someone who was used to losing ;P

Analysis: Good pick

3. Rage

Manhattan Rage - GUNNAR RASK

Manhattan is a team that has fallen down the standings in recent seasons, and seen an exodus of players out. The Rage needed to make the right pick here, as a bust could set them back even further. They look to Rask who has been one of the most-touted prospects since he announced his intention to join the SMJHL. Rask lived up to the hype, one of the strongest members of a strong Detroit Falcons crop of rookies - high TPE, money in the bank, a solid history and reputation for building talented players. Could make the leap to the SHL as soon as this season, but even if he returns to the Falcons for a serious run at the 4-Star Cup, he will make the leap sooner than later.

Analysis: Good pick

4. Riot

Seattle Riot (via Buffalo Stampede) - MICHAEL McFADDEN

Seattle had bad news when their rising star goaltender was unceremoniously booted from the league. They surprised a lot of critics by making the playoffs and
even knocking off the powerhouse Blizzard squad of S27, riding the shoulders of career backup Phil Osgoode. By taking the outright top goaltender in Michael McFadden, they ensure themselves either a successor to Osgoode, or a kick in the pants to Osgoode to train and join the goaltending elite. Either way, this is a pick for the future. McFadden himself, showed that he could overcome the absolute abyss of depression he likely faced every morning when he woke up to see that he lived in the godforsaken wilds of Prince George. He was among the top TPE earners of the class and has world-class reputation in his ability to create an build a player.

5.

New England Wolfpack (via Winnipeg Jets) - MIA LANDVIK

new England steps back up to the plate with still a plethora of riches available on the table. Having snagged a forward with Jones, they now look to the Defense
to balance their prospect pool. They select Mia Landvik with this pick, who may not have been the most-known name of the remaining draftees, but brings a Defense-first build to the game. Landvik was a strong player for Kelowna, with steady development and improvement in her game and her presence. It is possible that her connection with the 'Lil Brigade' moves her ahead of some other players, but as the Wolfpack have already shown, they want the right LR fit, and you can't argue with Landvik as being a good choice when it comes to that!

Analysis: Good pick

Los Angeles Panthers - JACKSON CARTIER

Cartier entered the rookie class with a lot of eyes on him, a lot of supporters and a few doubters! He had a strong season with Vancouver, and was rightfully considered a potential for first overall. Los Angeles went into rebuild mode after missing the playoffs last season, shipping out vets for promising youngsters. The Panthers have struggled with their picks in recent seasons, seeing once-promising prospects like Kwik and Macleod fall off the face of the earth. Cartier looks to break that jinx, and he joins a team where he will have great opportunities to play a big role very soon.

Analysis: Good pick

7.

Hamilton Steelhawks (via Minnesota Chiefs) - MARC-ANDRE MOREAU

Hamilton made it to the Challenge Cup finals last season despite having a lack of depth at the defender position. They fill this need by selecting Marc-Andre Moreau, from Halifax. Moreau had a solid season, with steady improvement and highly praised by his management team. Moreau will find a good home in Hamilton, joining a proven winning franchise with the abilty to coax the most out of their players.

Analysis: Good pick

8. Platoon

West Kendall Platoon - MIKKO LINNA

WKP is a team which has managed to rise from the bitter ashes of failure to become almost mediocre. They have a recent history of bringing Kelowna Knights
to their team, and they continue this tradition by selecting Mikko Linna. They are thrilled that a player as good as Linna falls to them at tis spot, as the teams ahead of them plucked defensemen off the vine - Linna is a highly-rated prospect who easily could have been selected much earlier. Mikko is another first-gen who has adapted to the North American style of hockey very quickly. WKP can afford to let Linna stay in the minors for another season and give him a chance to dominate in Kelowna for another season.

9.

Los Angeles Panthers (via Manhattan Rage, via Texas Renegades) - WILJIAN ZJANG

The Panthers take the podium for their second pick in the top ten - they can use players at just about every position. Zjang had been steadily rising the charts as the seaosn went on, a disguised recreate that only a few people knew his true identity! Suffice to say that LAP knew, and even traded up to get this pick in order to bring in Zjang. He will likely return to Detroit until he is SHL-ready, but if he maintains his recent pace of activity, that won't be too far away!

Analysis - Good pick

10. :admirals: Portland Admirals (via Edmonton Blizzard) - KJELL EIDE

Portland gets their first returned asset from their fire sale here. They need anything with a pulse, but fortunately there are still some solid prospects available. They select Kjell Eide, giving the basement-dwelling Firebirds 3 draftees
selected in the top 10. Kjell Eide is a centerman with a focus on offensive stats, who really jumped up the rankings in the second half of the season. Could very well be playing in the SHL this season, given the Admirals lack of depth.

11. Riot

Seattle Riot - QUINN STEVENSON

Seattle comes in with 2 picks in a row, they solved their goaltending quesion early, now they have the luxury of choosing the Best Player Available as they have 2 picks in a row. Needless to say, the Riot jump at defender Quinn Stevenson, who was one of the top 2 TPE earners all season long, a very active and determined player and member. Stevenson somehow managed to fly under the radar despite having a great season in Detroit, somewhat shocked that he fell this far but Seattle won't complain. If Quinn can keep going at the pace he's been at, he could be a top 4 defender within a few seasons.

12. Riot

Seattle Riot (via Toronto North Stars) - PRINCE DANIEL JAMES

With their second pick in a row, Seattle picks up a potential D-partner for Quinn as they pluck the last remaining stud defenseman in PD James. James is a recreate who has a colorful personality and may have a bit of a reputation for being flaky, but there is little doubt that he has plans to bring his game to the big leagues eventually. Seattle knows championships are won from the crease out, and with a goaltender and two future Defensive cornerstones, this draft goes a long way to cementing their future.

Hamilton Steelhawks - SAINT JERICHO

By this point in the draft, pickings are starting to get a bit thin, but Hamilton still has roster needs to fix. However, they went way out on a limb with this pick, apparently reckoning that inactive recreates are more valuable than active rookies. With barely over 200 TPE, Jericho has bust written all over him, about the only thing he has going for him here is being a defenseman, but it is unlikely he will have a chance to contribute to the 'Hawks any time soon.

14. Rage

Manhattan Rage (via Los Angeles Panthers, via Calgary Dragons) - XAVIER LAINE

Manhattan's 2nd pick in the first round, they basically want someone active at this point, who is showing an upward growth curve. Xavier Laine fits the bill here, as a Free Agent signing he might have missed out on some pre-draft TPE opportunities, but he has been steadily climbing the prospect charts, and with another season in the SMJHL, could be ready to make the leap soon.
