S24 Top 15 Players: Where are they now?

<div align="center">Back in S24 I wrote an article about the top players in the league as voted by their peers. Now, three seasons later its time to look back at this list and see how their SMJHL success has translated into career success. These are not ranked on where they are now. The rankings are based on where they were on the top 15 list in S24. I am considering opening it up to voting to do a top 15 list using these players based on where they are now but I think ArGar's top 100 list is about the closest we are going to get. We will at least see the top players on this list show up on that list. If you're a new player who hasn't seen his list I encourage you to check it out. It's always a great way to learn names within the league and see how they stack up against eachother

D - Maria Maximova
SMJHL Team: Kelowna Knights
Current SHL Team: West Kendall Platoon

As a rookie in Kelowna Maria Maximova showed everyone the she was the real deal. She came into the league on fire and has continued her development consistently with West Kendall. Maximova has found a home on the second pairing of the Platoon earning her big minutes behind stalwart defenseman Bojo Biscuit with whom she was paired with on the first powerplay unit last season. Maria Maximova has proven that she was worth the high draft choice the Platoon spent on her and she looks to be on the edge of stardom in the SHL

RW - Buster Killington
SMJHL Team: Montreal Impact
Current SHL Team: Toronto North Stars/Retired

Buster "Buzz" Killington looked like he was going to have an excellent career in the SHL. He was tearing it up for the Portland Admirals as the star of the newly budding expansion club and heading nowhere but up. He finished S27 one point behind future hall of famer Chico Salmon and led the entire SHL in goals. Even his haters couldn't deny his production and value to his team. Things changed in the off season when he was suspended for an entire season which he then followed up with his retirement. The Toronto North Stars made a trade for him in hopes of talking him out of retirement. It is still uncertain whether they will succeed or if he will remain retired. One thing is for sure though, Buster Killington will forever be remembered as one of the biggest "what ifs" in recent memory.

C - Kaapo Kekkonen
SMJHL Team: Detroit Falcons
Current SHL Team: Los Angeles Panthers

Kekkonen was overshadowed by the big Knutsen-Mack pairing of the Falcons while in the SMJHL. Now that he is in Los Angeles things haven't changed for Kaapo Kekkonen. Thanks to the center depth of the Panthers he has been overshadowed by Brian Morley and Chris Johnson. S28 could be a break out year for Kekkonen as Chris Johnson was traded away to the Calgary Dragons leaving an opening on the second line down the middle. Kekkonen will compete with Travis Kudleychuk for the spot and if things go well for Kekkonen he could see a massive increase in ice time. If given the chance we will finally get to see if Kekkonen can replicate his SMJHL success in the SHL.

RW - Mirko Antonio Scuderi
SMJHL Team: Prince George Firebirds
Current SHL Team: Free Agent

The first player on this list who never developed past his SMJHL success. Scuderi was traded from the Firebirds to the Kelowna Knights during S25 and helped the Knights win the Four Star cup over the Montreal Impact. He never played another game in the SMJHL after S25 and never played a game in the SHL.

RW - Robb Wind
SMJHL Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Current SHL Team: Buffalo Stampede

The #1 overall pick of the S24 SMJHL draft entered the SHL with a ton of buzz. He joined the Buffalo Stampede and was named captain as a true rookie. Wind hasn't quite put up the production one would like to see out of someone playing the amount of big minutes he is but coming into the league as a true rookie is no easy task. Wind has shown nice development on a struggling Buffalo Stampede team and had a very strong S27 putting up 40 points. Wind's development hasn't kept up to the blistering pace he showed in his first couple of seasons but he has continued to be a steady player who is consistently getting better each season. If the Buffalo Stampede are going to be a successful franchise in the future you can bet that Robb Wind will be the man leading the charge for the team.

#10
RW - Vincent-Leon-Anze Draisaitl-McZehrl
SMJHL Team: Vancouver Whalers
Current SHL Team: Seattle Riot

VLAD McZ came into the SHL as the projected first overall pick in the S24 draft, to the Calgary Dragons but by name association with Chris McZehrl he ended up sliding. As the picks kept going off the board VLAD kept falling further and further as McZ sat and watched other players get taken over himself. Calgary sat there at the top of the second round and to their amazement saw him getting passed over pick after pick. The Dragons then traded back into the late first round to grab him before he got snatched up. The team was ecstatic, they had considered taking him at #1 overall and they ended up getting him near the end of the first. This depth would be key to the Dragons recent S27 Challenge cup victory. VLAD was a huge part of the teams playoff run and came up with some big time game winning goals including some in overtime. McZ recently was traded to the Seattle Riot, the same team Chris McZehrl played on during the most successful time of his career. Time will tell if VLAD will replicate the success of Chris McZehrl, but he has already showed that he is a clutch player who comes up in big time situations.

G - Kyle Prince
SMJHL Team: Prince George Firebirds
Current SHL Team: Free Agent

Kyle Prince was a great SMJHL goalie for the Prince George Firebirds. He was a high draft pick who looked like he was going to be a great SHL goalie as well. Sometime near the end of his SMJHL career something happened to Kyle Prince though and his development came to an abrupt halt. Nobody has been able to figure out what changed but the Manhattan Rage decided to not renew his contract after seeing him in action as their backup for the past two seasons. This looks like the end of Kyle Prince's career in the SHL as it's highly unlikely another team decides to take him on as a backup when they could put a younger player there that they could hope to develop.

C – Evandrus Jesster
SMJHL Team: Montreal Impact
Current SHL Team: Seattle Riot

Jesster entered the SMJHL paired with Robb Wind as the big two can’t miss picks of this draft. Despite being taken #2 behind Wind, Jesster arrives higher on the S24 top 15 list than Wind. Jesster has overtaken Wind in TPE as well with his extremely high work ethic and desire to be great. The Seattle Riot have brought him along slowly keeping him on the third line behind Sean Leonidas and Pavel Bursyuk down the middle. Having a player of Jesster's calibur on the third line shows the incredible depth of the Riot and why they are a moster team every season. I wouldn't expect huge numbers out of Jesster while he is still on the third line but he is happy with his role and has always been a team first player. Look out for him to explode as a top player in the league when he finally gets his chance as a top six player on his team.

RW – Bjorn Knutsen
SMJHL Team: Detroit Falcons
Current SHL Team: Retired

Knutsen is a curious case. Coming up on the end of his SMJHL career he was poised for a huge year when suddenly he announced he was going to retire at the end of the season. He finished his final SMJHL season tied for the league lead in points and then walked off into the sunset. Just like Killington he will forever be another "what if" as many wonder what could have been had he played out a normal SHL career.

#6
LW – Damien Wert
SMJHL Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Current SHL Team: West Kendall Platoon

Damien Wert has taken what most would call the normal route for a young player in the SHL. With the West Kendall Platoon he played his first two seasons on the third line while developing his game before finally getting his shot on the top line beside superstars Oliver Pettyfer and Zallerras Szlerchek in S27. Wert showed why he was a high draft pick as he put up almost half of his career points in S27 netting 14 goals and 17 assists. Wert will only continue to get better as he develops into the superstar player the West Kendall Platoon expect him to be.

#5
LW – Randy Randleman
SMJHL Team: Kelowna Knights
Current SHL Team: Calgary Dragons

As the first pick in the S24 SHL entry draft there were big expectations for Randy Randleman. Many people were shocked when he was sent down for a third SMJHL season with the Kelowna Knights but anyone looking at the Calgary Dragons can plainly see that they like to let their players develop in the SMJHL longer than most teams. Randleman finished his SMJHL career with a Four Star cup win in S25 and earned Playoff MVP honors. Randleman finally made the jump up to the Calgary Dragons roster and spent his first season playing on the third line and the powerplay. Randleman did not disappoint as he scored 21 goals and 16 assists in his rookie season and earned the Ryan Jesster trophy as rookie of the year. In his second year he spent most of the season on the second line and put up almost identical numbers with 20 goals and 16 assists. During the playoffs Randleman really came alive and was a big part of the Dragons winning the Challenge cup. He was second on the team in points with 15 points in 17 games, 4 points behind linemate Alex Mack who led the playoffs in 19 points. Randleman will be a big part of the Calgary Dragons for the forseeable future as he was named assistant captain last season and signed a 10 year deal with the team.

#4
D – Brandon Girard
SMJHL Team: Detroit Falcons
Current SHL Team: Retired

Our third retired player on this list, Brandon Girard was the most successful of the retirees. He has an incredible SMJHL career earning league MVP honors and winning a Four Star Cup. He then continued his success in the SHL with the Hamilton Steelhawks and won a Challenge Cup there as well. Girard then shocked everyone and decided to retire and decided to pursue a military career. Girard was on pace for an excellent SHL career and would have likely won multiple Challenge cups if he hadn't retired. His relative, Shane Gagner was drafted by the Calgary Dragons and looks like he could end up being more successful than Brandon Girard was ever going to be.

#3
C – Alex Mack
SMJHL Team: Detroit Falcons
Current SHL Team: Calgary Dragons

Alex Mack had a longer SMJHL career than most players, but when he finally made the jump to the SHL he showed the league what they were waiting for. he has anchored the second line of the Calgary Dragons and came alive during the S27 playoffs and Challenge Cup victory for them. As mentioned earlier in this thread Alex Mack led the playoffs with 19 points in 17 games during the playoffs. Along side Randy Randleman and Michael Burch, Alex Mack is the eldest of the youthful players coming up in the Dragons organization and all signs point to him being with the team for the rest of his career.

#2
RW – Adam Abodobe
SMJHL Team: Kelowna Knights
Current SHL Team: Edmonton Blizzard

Yet another one on this list who never lived up to expectations. Abodobe tied Knutsen for the league lead in points in S24 and then things went south in a hurry. He never put up those kind of numbers again in the SMJHL and when he finally came to the Edmonton Blizzard his development halted. With only 0.25 points per game he is nothing more than a low level depth player for the Blizzard and I wouldn't be surprised if he is out of the leauge in the next few years.

#1
D – Patrick Brumm
SMJHL Team: Prince George Firebirds
Current SHL Team: Texas Renegades

Patrick Brumm has bounced around the SHL since entering the league three seasons ago. He was drafted by the Hamilton Steelhawks to be paired with Brandon Girard and he got called up for a Steelhawks playoff run after the Firebirds were eliminated. He took home a Challenge Cup with the team during his playoff run callup. When Brandon Girard retired, Patrick Brumm asked for a trade and was moved to the expansion Portland Admirals. In Portland, Brumm was a super star. He played huge minutes for the team and showed up as one of the best defenseman in the league despite being on a horrible team. Portland decided to go into a full rebuild after being hit with punishments for tampering and that meant Brumm would be moved again, this time to the Texas Renegades. Patrick Brumm is an established super star in this league and should continue to be so for the remainder of his career. I wouldn't be shocked to see him in the Hall of Fame at the end of his career.
S24 Stats: 399 TPE || 18G || 32A || +4 || 54 PIM
Career SHL Stats: 896 TPE || 150GP || 25G || 50A || -29 || 186PIM

Looking back on this its safe to say that no matter how successful a player is in the SMJHL it is by no means indicitive of future SHL success. Similar to the draft it can look like a player is on track to have an incredible career but then for one reason or another their development halts entirely, or they decide they are done with hockey and they would rather retire. The job of an SHL GM or scout is no easy task. The successful ones put a large amount of time into creating relationships with players they are looking at drafting. In the end this league is all about the relationships you form. If that doesn't happen a player is much more likely to leave the league entirely. Most often players come to the SHL to talk to the friends they have made. Seeing how their player does and how much they can develop them is always going to be there for people if they are visiting the site, but it is built on relationships that have been made. Many of these relationships start in the SMJHL during a players rookie season. I know personally I am closest with members of my draft class simply because we came up together, prepared for the draft together, and talked about our seasons together as we competed against each other. I encourage every young player in the league to try to form as many relationships as they can within the league. These are what will keep bringing you back and are the core of creating an active, successful player.

Oh thanks, my bad!

Man it's cool to look back, but kind of sad how many top players went nowhere.
