Brassard
#1

As much as I like Derrick Brassard, this is a bad trade.

Context: Sens traded Zibanejad and a 2nd to New York for Brassard and a 7th (iirc).

I don't mind the trade for Ottawa. Ottawa saves money and they shake up their core, they could return next season with pretty much the same group and expect to do much better. Z-bad never really clicked with anyone in Ottawa and was inconsistent. Even if Z-bad ends up being a bit better than Brassard, if Brassard can get Ryan going (something Z-bad couldn't do) then it's a big plus and it would make Ryan's contract look better. This also free up money now and down the road to sign guys like Hoffman, Stone, and Ceci. Overall, I personally don't think there is a clear cut winner right away.

Well it's not like they gave away a 2nd round pick for Kevin Bieksa or anything. ;Wink

Sens needed more consistency down the middle and Zib was never supplying that, in addition to not being a pass first guy, forcing his wingers to be play-maker for the line. Plus, they have a few really great center prospects in the pipeline. My first reaction was 'wtf' but the more I think about it, the better it gets. Plus, seeing Ranger fans love of him and reaction to the trade has me enticed to see Brassard in a Sens uniform. Hopefully it pans out nicely for them this season.

Andren Akerson (Present)
Adrik Baranov (S55 to S70)
Rurik Razin (S32 to S44)
Roy Razin (S17 to S32) (HOF/Rage HOF)
Audun Wissink (S5 to S15)

I personally view Brassard on a similar level to Turris, the are number 1 centres on some teams but on a Stanley cup team they are second line centres. If I had the choice of going into next season with Turris and Brassard or Turris and Z-bad I choose the first one because Ottawa has been going with the later combo the past few seasons so they needed to do something to change the dynamic of the team. Also, with the age of the team they can't keep waiting for young guys to breakout and guys like Karlsson, Turris, Ryan are in their prime and Guys like Methot, Phaneuf, Anderson, and MacArthur aren't going to get better as time goes on so I think Ottawa needs to try and win or at least contend now.

I don't hate Brassard or anything. I also don't love Zibanejad. I just don't understand why you need to give a 2nd here, as though Ottawa w/ Brassard is suddenly something Ottawa w/ Mika is not. They're the same team. Maybe this year, Brassard outscores Zibanejad by a few. Maybe he doesn't? No one know. But if that's the case, why throw in a Top 45 pick (because you know Ottawa won't make the playoffs again)

So, a premium for a lateral move, where you get older. Woof.

See, I don't understand the second rounder either. I don't think Brassard is THAT much better that they needed to throw that in. I also don't think they're in a position where they would've been pressured into making a quick deal.

Also, we talk about the Sens being a contender now, they annually have millions in cap space. That can be EASILY used to bring in someone, until they start spending a bit in the offseason, I'm always gonna be skeptical on their success.

I saw a point mentioned on twitter about wether the second round pick could have been used to get New York to pay Brassards $2mill bonus

The second is two year's out. Who knows what will happen in that time?

Brassard is a nice pick up. I've liked him since his Columbus days, and getting a local guy just hitting his prime is something I really like. Zibby always seemed disinterested nearly and has a rough start to his game. It just didn't seem like it was working for him here. I hope it works out for Z-Bad in New York, but I'm also digging this for the Sens. The pick is a tad too much, but we have to see what happens with that pick before panicking.
