Top 3 Season 30 SMJHL Defensemen

Moving along now I'll take a look at the top defensemen in this very strong draft. We've got a bit of every style on this list, because who doesn't love variety? Besides my own draft position, I'm very interested to see where these players land, because hopefully one of these three will be patrolling the ice in front of me next season.

#1 Brynjar Tusk – Defensive Defenseman
6’5”
230lbs
Shoots Right

The big bad Swedish blueliner heads into this draft as my personal favourite. He should be the #1 pick, if I’m being totally honest. Maybe this is goalie bias, but this is the kind of guy I want out front helping me out when I’m in net. If I had the first three picks in this draft I would pick Tusk three times in a row. His weakness is scoring but considering the positive impact he has on prevent goals I don’t even take it into consideration. One thing Tusk will need to work on is his passing, because he needs to be able to make a zone exit pass once he makes his move. Not to show anymore bias here but I’ll close with this… draft Brynjar Tusk!

#2 Connor MacDonald – Offensive Defenseman

From day to night right here, this kid is the complete opposite of Brynjar Tusk. If you’re looking for offense from the back end then Connor MacDonald is unmatched in this draft class. He’s equal parts shooter and passer, and most would say that his ability to decide between the two is incredible for his age. Personally I don’t love these offensive defenseman because they are often the reason I’m facing my biggest weakness: breakaways. In the case of MacDonald though I could probably make an exception. He has shown that his zone exits are highly successful, and even though his defensive game is weak he is smart with his stick and a strong skater. Not a complete package, but definitely another quality player in a stacked draft.

#3 Greta Iversen – Two-way Defenseman

175lbs
Shoots Right

At number 3 I present to you the total package defenseman of the draft. The Norwegian’s balance of defense and offense puts her a step above many other defenseman in this draft class, and while I respect the expertise the above two show in their given roles, I this any of these three will be homeruns for whoever drafts them. If you want a defenseman that you can put out on the ice in any situation and expect them to make a strong play you should look no further. Iversen should put some work into her skating, because she could easily come out as the best defensemen in this draft with the ability to skate herself out of trouble and into offensive situations. Also, her checking is a major weakness of hers and I think a lot of GMs might miss out on her because they don’t like a passive defenseman. In my opinion a defenseman doesn’t always need to check to make the right play, so that’s why a lot of the heavy hitters in this draft didn’t make my list.
