Post all of your PGS's in this thread. This also doesn't exclude chirping in this thread, that's kind of the point to these: react, reply to someone's PGS, talk shit to each other the way the SHL is meant to be. They're linking the exact post in their claim so my graders don't have to sift through everything, so it's ok to have a bit of back and forth.
Some ground rules: The grading of these is objective to a point. We're being nice here and not placing a word count minimum you need, but at the same time, we will dock you for just copying and pasting straight from the index or for missing parts of the things to include. The point is to elaborate past the game thread posted in your PGS. If you have any questions about grading, please come talk to me and we can work things out. I'm perfectly ok letting you redo a PGS to get max credit. These also need to be timely, so there is a late policy. On-time PGS receive full credit, 1 TPE is docked for every IRL week the PGS is late. The only time I will allow you to do a late PGS is during the playoffs, and allow every PGS open to help fill caps. This keeps things flowing nicely, but also allows some that have a tight schedule to pound out a few late to get credit for the draft. Things to Include **REQUIRED : Header of which 2 teams are playing, the score, brief synopsis of the game, link to game, plus 3 things from the list provided: * highlight reel (min. 3 gifs or graphics) * tell a story of the game, journalist or blog style * some description of the goals (not just, 'he shoots he scores', but the leadup of the play and how it transpired, who was involved) * 'TSN Turning Points' (e.g. in game 1, the 5 minute major was a key moment in the game) * team stats breakdown and analysis e.g. Faceoffs, Special teams, something more than just posting the stats seen in the game link * individual player stats breakdown/comparisons * interview(s) with players/GMs involved - minimum 3 questions, cannot interview yourself, cannot interview the same person more than once in a season * interesting trivia or historical matchups, potential playoff implications, etc. * graphics, infographics * unsung heroes or MVP, three stars, etc. * magazine style profiles * podcast or video * radio call-in show? * other *** PAYOUT *** @ 2-3 TPE; max once per sim week; max +15 total Season Cap is 15 TPE earned from PGS, which is separate from the Point Task Cap. bk1689Moderators Moderator  Montreal Milita 5 at  Vancouver Whalers 3Game Link The game was a low scoring, easy going game until the 3rd where it was blown wide open. The atmosphere was electric, and the fans were ravenous. Both teams came out ready to play, with neither giving an inch in this game of cat and mouse. With 5 goals from 4 different players Montreal came out on top 5 to 3. Starting Lineups Montreal Militia LW - Nolan Angello C - Filip Granlund RW - Jason Forbrook D - Ilmari Maatta D - Viatcheslav Orlov G - Stephen Harris Vancouver Whalers LW - Conklin Owen C - Jon Ross RW - Ace Redding D - Theodore Graham D - Brynjar Tusk G - Triforce Link With the first day now history on the 30th season of the SMJHL well recap Montreals first game. Being bounced around from the top of the East to the bottom in preseason predictions by many different experts, the Militia felt they had something to prove, and that they did. Montreals first game of the season saw them flying to the west coast to visit the Vancouver Whalers. The game started out with a buzz in the air. The crowd was happy to witness the first game of the season, and the players looked to put on a show. It didn't take long for the first moment of excitement as at 6:19 into the 1st period Ieuan Llewellyn took offense to a comment Militia Captain Ilmari Maatta yelled to him in the corner. Llewellyn came up behind Maatta and put him in a headlock before dropping the gloves. After all was said and done both players received 5 minutes for fighting with Llewellyn receiving a misconduct for instigating. The 1st was pretty quiet until 3:08 left in the period when Levi Kubrak rang one in off the post to make 1-0 Vancouver. The 2nd period started with a bang as OG Bobby shoveled one in on the powerplay 20 seconds in. There was lots of back and forth in this period as both team were still trying to feel each other out. This was a pretty stale period with a couple penalties and one more goal coming late in the period for Montreal. The 2nd ended 2-1 Vancouver. The 3rd was the kind of periods fans live for. A high flying, action packed, high scoring period. Maatta tied the game up with a blast from the point on the PP just 3:42 in. However that tie wasn't long lived as Jon Ross of the Whalers replied just 20 seconds later, rushing off the face off from centre ice down to the Militia net and putting one five hole. This put the Whalers up 3-2. Nolan Angello and his line stepped on the ice to take the next face off and he had no intentions of letting the Whalers have the lead. Just 16 seconds after Ross' goal Angello took a pass on the tape, split the D and wired one in the top right hand corner of the Whalers net. With that the Militia switched to overdrive, with Wells potting his 2nd of the game and Zyvleski putting the 5th and final goal of the night into the Whalers net As the final buzzer rang, it was Montreal 5, Vancouver 3. Special teams seemed to have the biggest impact on the night with Montreal going 3 for 4 on the powerplay. The TSN turning point of the game was Nolan Angello's goal in the 3rd. He replied quickly after Vancouver scored with his goal knotting it all up at 3. After that the Militia put the gad pedal to the floor, leaving Vancouver well behind in the dust. The 3 stars for the game were: #3 Viatcheslav Orlov : With his 2 assists, 2 hits and 2 shots blocked, he was a cornerstone of the Militias defense in this game. All over the ice and shutting down everyone. He was actually Pierre's choice for Monster. #2 Zach Zyvleski : 1 goal , 2 assists, 2 PIM and 4 hits. It seemed like anytime a play was made, Zyvleski was in the middle of it. The preseason didn't seem to slow him down at all. #1 Wesley Wells : With 2 goals in 13:57 of time played, Wells just seemed to have a nose for the net. Each one of his 5 shots were a legitimate scoring threat. Kelowna Knights vs Prince George Firebirds
Score: Kelowna 5 - Prince George 3 Game Link The first meeting of the season of these two teams looked to be a good one. With the Knights coming off their first win of the season and Firebirds still looking for theirs you could feel the competitive edge in the air for both sides as they squared off early in the season. With such a large and deep draft this year, there was plenty to look forward to heading into this one with so many new faces and names on the score sheet. 1st Period 1. Kelowna Knights , Michael Burrows 1 (Justs Sirmais, Fedor Shirobokov) at 1:38 Within the first few minutes the knights found the board. The puck was put in by the rookie Burrows. A rebound off of Dafoe, Burrows was johnny on the spot to put the puck away to put the knights ahead 1-0. 2. Prince George Firebirds , Karl Hertzberg 1 (Barak Obrana, Tapper Kottbulle) at 6:56 (PP) Within only 5 minutes Hertzberg replied. Put together with a nice set of passes in the offensive zone he found the puck on his stick and wristed it home top corner to tie the game up early in the 1st. 3. Kelowna Knights , Cara Hohenberg 1 (Beau Bent, Alex Light) at 9:23 (PP) After a penatly by Bastard (Hooking) a face off came into the Firebirds zone. A flurry of shots by Beau Bent which missed the net, the puck finally found it's way to Cara Hohenberg with a wide open cage after a rebound from the boards. The Knights went into the 2nd period ahead on the board, but the play still felt very even and it seemed like the outcome could still swing either way this early. The Firebirds were hungry for win #1 of the season for sure. Outshooting the Firebirds 8-5 and have a 2 to 1 PP advantage helped drive the pace in the Knights favor for this period. 2nd Period 4. Prince George Firebirds , Eduard Selich 1 (Karl Hertzberg, Hunky Monkey) at 6:00 Hertzberg was there again in the offensive zone, this time to set up Selich with a one timer which beat the Knights goalie cleanly to even the score back up. 5. Prince George Firebirds , Karl Hertzberg 2 (Johnny Pollak, Casper Jakobsson) at 11:04 (PP) After an offside call on the Firebirds, Jakobsson beat Bent cleanly to dump the puck into the zone, two firebird players had shots at the net both missing until finally after two quick passes Hertzberg found himself in a good position and tucked it low blocker on Aittokallio. This period belonged to the Firebirds, outshooting the Knights 7-3 they controlled the game for what almost seemed the whole period. The knight had trouble moving the puck out of their own zone and it seemed almost as if they were skating through mud trying to force it's way past the Firebirds fore-check pressure. Kelowna Knights , Dieter Dominique 1 (Geronimo Otto, Anatoly Yanovich) at 2:35 The TSN turning point of this game was early in the 3rd when it was if the coach said something to spark the fire under the knights but with the start of the period they came out running. Putting immediate pressure on the Firebirds and being rewarded with the tying goal. From this point on it was if the Firebirds were fighting uphill to stay in this game, but as the result shows it was not meant to be. 7. Kelowna Knights , Anatoly Yanovich 1 (Justs Sirmais, Cara Hohenberg) at 10:28 (PP) Anatoly Yanovich had an almost highlight reel tip on this goal, putting the stick between his legs to get a piece of Sirmais's shot ricocheting off the cross bar on down. Dafoe had no chance on this tip. 8. Kelowna Knights , Cara Hohenberg 2 (Ty Justice, Trevor Wilson) at 19:20 (Empty Net) The Knights forced to take a draw in their own end, is won by Bent and he takes a hit to make a play, freeing the puck up for Wilson and Justice to move the puck up to Hohenberg to seal the deal and pocket an empty netter. The Knights in the 3rd seemed to find a 6th gear and slammed the gear shift into from the puck drop. They literally took the Firebirds mantra from the 2nd and shoved it right back out them, Suffocating their D and peppering Dafoe with 10 shots while only allowing 3 themselves. They played a complete period and executed their strategies what seemed almost perfectly. Some big performances from the veterans tied with some very solid defense pushed the Knights over the edge in this game and onto a victory. An all around great game by this returning player. Cara always seems to make the most out of the ice time given and looks to be a key cog to the Knights machine this year. Look for more of this level of play to continue as the knights coaching staff leans heavily on this player. 2 - Karl Hertzberg (PGF) G: 2 || A:1 || PTS: 3 || Minutes Played: 17:46 Much like the Pre season Hertzberg seems to be the one player who consistently answers the call for the firebirds. Unfortunately the outcome wasn't quite what he might have hoped he seemed confident in the group around him "We had the game where we wanted it, and although the outcome wasn't exactly what we had hoped I have faith in this group to close games out moving ahead and I know we will be just fine"- Hertzberg. 3 - Anatoly Yanovich (KEL) G: 1 || A:1 || PTS: 2 || Minutes Played: 20:54 After the absolutely ridiculous tip for the go ahead goal Anatoly was smiling ear to ear after the game by the media attention and shrugged it off as no more as 'One of the those plays'. Eating up minutes with Hohenberg he was a complete player on the ice tonight and contributed at the right times. Both are coming off mediocre preseasons, but the regular season campaign will get started in earnest. 1st Period The first period got underway in interesting fashion, with both centers being ejected from the opening faceoff by the referee. Joseph Riccardelli managed to win it for the Firebirds, giving them the chance to open the game with some pressure. After a quick icing by Colorado, the Firebirds get their first chance of the game. We go to Jamie Price and Nathan Russel in Denver for the call. Quote:"...Puck dumped in by Kottbulle. O'Dooley will retrieve it in the corner, but Hertzberg will lay a body on him. O'Dooley attempts to clear, kept in at the line by Kottbulle, who hammers it back in deep for a change. Rudnikova will skate out and fire it up to Dover. Puck tips off his stick, and right to Savage, and he'll put it up to Watkins. 2 on 1 for Prince George. Shot by Watkins, blocked right there by O'Dooley! Sousa picks it up trailing in and fires a shot, but Rudnikova will swipe it out of the air with the glove!" Prince George would get on the board first, on a strike from Berard Gutler. Quote:"O'Dooley attempts to lay one up ice, but it'll be picked off by Young. Young lays it up to Jakobsson, who puts it over to Savage. Savage will put it down low for Bastard. Bastard over to Jakobsson, he centers and they score! Prince George would finish the period with the lead, with 5 shots on goal. Colorado only managed to get 3. 2nd Period Colorado started the 2nd period on the power play after a late slashing penalty against Frederick Boone. Prince George would spend much of the period on the penalty kill, as their players took several undisciplined penalties, many of them not long after the previous penalty expired. Colorado applied the pressure several times on the power play, managing 10 shots in the period, but Prince George's penalty kill was able to keep the puck out of the back of the net. Prince George would manage only 4 shots in the period, but would end it on the power play, a result of a late Goaltender Interference penalty to Colton Hagan. 3rd Period Prince George tightened up their play in the 3rd period, taking only 2 penalties, but Colorado exploded, and would capitalize on a hooking penalty by Barak Obrana. Quote:"...Rudnikova will retrieve the dump in as the penalty kill lines change for Prince George. McGraw will get the puck, and will throw it up to Stamkos, who's moving through center. Stamkos will carry it into the Prince George zone. He'll throw it back to Dover. Dover with a pass over to O'Dooley. He'll throw it right back to Dover, who puts it down to Stamkos. O'Dooley sets up in the high slot, Stamkos throws it there, but O'Dooley will hold off on firing.O'Dooley backs up, then lays it over to Dover who sends a drive wide! O'Dooley grabs it along the boards, then sends one across to Stamkos, who scores! Colorado wouldn't stop there, as they came off a power play later in the game still firing, and managed to come up with a crucial goal. Quote:"Boone will win the draw over to Savage. Savage throws it up to Hertzberg to break it out. He carries it into the Colorado zone, and will throw it back to Selich, who throws it right back to Hertzberg. Hertzberg lays one to Boone, but Svensson intercepts it and throws it up to Magaku, who puts one ahead for Legend! 2 on 1 for Colorado! Legend over to Money, and he'll send it just wide! Yvel picks it up, he winds, shoots, and scores! Colorado would not allow another shot by Prince George after the goal, and won 2-1 in an exciting opening night game. 3 Stars of the Game 1 - Tord Yvel (COL) - 1G, +1, 1 SB, GWG - Yvel receives the 1st star after being Colorado's hero tonight by scoring the game winning goal with 4:47 remaining in the game. 2 - Berard Gutler (PGF) - 1G, +1 - Gutler gets the 2nd star for hammering home Prince George's only goal, a goal that came on very few shots overall from the Firebirds. 3 - Casper Jakobsson (PGF) - 1A, +1, 4 Hits - Jakobsson gets the 3rd star for contributing to the Firebirds' only goal, as well as for his dominant physical performance and success in the faceoff circle, as he racked up 4 hits and went 16/26 on faceoffs. Game 4: Detroit Falcons
 vs Kelowna Knights  Score: Detroit 3 - Kelowna 4 Game Link The game was 65 minutes of hard fought hockey between two evenly matched teams. It came all the way down to the wire, requiring a shootout to determine the winner. It was a great start to the regular season for both teams coming out with at least one point each. But, the Knights will be more happy getting the win. 1st Period The first period was a high scoring affair, containing 5 of 6 goals scored in regulation. The first goal come at 8:22 into the first. This was scored by rookie Trevor Wilson with assists going to Beau Bent and Fedor Shirobokov. The goal was set up by a beautiful passing play between Bent and Shirobokov. Bent and Shirobokov made the stunned the opposing defenders with a quick give and go pass. This allowed Wilson go get open on the other side of the ice to received the gorgeous saucer pass from Bent. The Knights 1-0 lead lasted for for just over 6 minutes when Rising Hippo deflected the puck in to give the Falcons their first goal of the season. This goal came on the powerplay after a hooking penalty by Starosta. After two quick shots by Prince Daniel James and Zach Evans that were not able to hit the net Cikgnar Konstantinov got the puck at the blueline. He then fired a laser of a pass/shot towards the Knights goal with plenty of men blocking Jason Aitokallio's vision. The shot missed however, Hippo was able to get his stick on the puck and deflect it towards into the left corner of the net past Aitokallio. ![[Image: giphy.gif]](https://media.giphy.com/media/g67Lg5rAuPOG4/giphy.gif) Hippo's powerplay goal at 14:54 into the first period The tie was broken just moments later when rookie Geronimo Otto was able to find the back of the net. This come off another beautiful display of passing by the Knights. The play was set up by Shirobokov, who was awarded the secondary assist. Shirobokov made a short but effective pass to Otto to get the Falcons dmen out of posiiton. The puck was then throw back and forth in front of McSieve four times by Otto and Dieter. By the time Otto took the shot McSieve was way out of position and his jock strap could be seen hanging from the rafters of Prospera arena along with the retired jerseys. The Knights held onto their 2-1 lead until the final minute of the first period, when the Falcons scored two goals within 6 seconds of each other to take the lead heading into the intermission. The first goal was scored by Zach Evans after a bad turnover by Wilson in his own end. Wilson a long cross ice pass that ended up directly on the tape of Viktor Nerokov. Nerokov then fed Evans in the corner. Evans took a quick glance at his options then proceeded to wheel behind the net putting himself in a good position to set up Alexis Metzler in the slot. Metzler faked the shot , making Aitokallio momentarily, before passing it back to Evans for the easy empty net tap in. The second of the took quick goal occured 6 seconds later from a great individual effort by Jari Sinnika. Nerokov won the faceoff at center ice directly to Sinnika. Sinnika carried the puck just inside the Knights before releasing a a shot directly into the stick of Shirobokov. Unforunately for Shirobokov the puck rebounded right back to Sinnika how continued cutting through the middle of ice. Sinnika let go a bullseye of a shot pinging off the cross bar, just over Aitokallio's shoulder, and flying into the back of the net. ![[Image: GOAL.gif]](http://gif.mocksession.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/GOAL.gif) Sinnika's goal at 19:19 into the first period 2nd Period The second period had less action than the first featuring only goal. The goal came 13 minutes into the period off a bad turnover by Erik Muller. Muller tried to clear the puck out of his end, bad fanned the attempt. The puck slid easily up the boards ending up on the stick of Starosta at the blue line. Starosta sent the puck across the ice to Bent at the right side of the blue line. Seeing Wilson rushing into the zone with a full head of speed down the right side Bent left him a drop pass, allowing Wilson to cut to the middle. Wilson then pulled off one of the most amazing goals I've ever seen, a goal that will be in the conversation for goal of the year come the end of the season. The overtime, like the 3rd, was uneventful. Shootout Out of the five shooters that participated in the shootout only Starosta could find the back of the net. Starosta had a came down the left side with the puck on her fore hand. She then pulled a huge cross crease toe drag before fire the puck post and in on the back hand. ![[Image: stars.gif]](http://cdn1.sbnation.com/assets/3519149/stars.gif) Starosta's shootout winner Three Stars 3: Viktor Nerokov: 2A, +1, 9/13 FO Nerokov was an integral part of the two goals that he assisted on. Without him the Falcons would not have been able to get that two very important goals. This earned him 3rd star of the game. 2: Zach Evans: 1G, 1A, +1 Evans made a great heads up play that led to him being able to get a tap in goal. In addition, to this he was able to produce an assistearning him 2nd star of the game. 1: Trevor Wilson: 2G, +1, 4H Wilson has the clear choice for first star in this game, with his 2 goals. His second goal was absolutely unbelievable, and a will be right up there for goal of the year at the end of the season. This earned him first star of the game. Player Page --- Update Page

Detroit, MI. ![[Image: WnEkyxp.png]](http://i.imgur.com/WnEkyxp.png) Link To Game Stats The Scarecrows came into Detroit for game 2 of each teams early season coming off a nice 3-1 win in their home opener again the Halifax Raiders. Detroit started their season on the road in Kelowna and suffered a tough shootout loss 4-3. The shootout loss was came at the hands of Kelowna Knights rookie defenseman Adriana Starosta. The 5’5 rookie made a big impact. This was the home opener for Detroit and the Jet Blue Airways Arena was packed with fans who had some early excitement building based on a very strong preseason by the Falcons where they went 13-3 and were quite vocal about it. Canadian defenseman DarryL Landry opened the scoring for the Scarecrows just halfway through the first period. Dos Diablo took a shot on Sivy McSieve and there waiting for the rebound was Landry. The lead was short-lived however as roughly 3 minutes later rookie Russian forward Viktor Nerokov showed great hustle to retrieve a puck that was shot wide by a teammate and get a quick shot off to tie it up 1-1. Nerokov has made headlines recently by demanding a trade from Detroit. He says the GM’s of the team were not honest with him from the start. He would like to play on a team in a more prominent role and although it’s clear this kid has tons of talent, not many teams around the league are looking for a forward to play big minutes. It will be interesting to watch this playout. The first period was far from over though as Detroit seemed to thrive off the moment Nerokov generated and came back with another quick goal to make it 2-1 Falcons. Nucky Toohoots scored a beauty after intercepting a pass from Rhaegar Targaryen in the neutral zone and passing it up to a streaking Hans Moleman. Toohoots followed the play hard into the Scarecrows zone and Moleman found him with a beauty pass that Toohoots made no mistake on to help his team take the lead. The Scarecrows looked to be reeling and with a team loaded with rookie forwards it was another St Louis defenseman that stepped up to tie the game 2-2. Rhaegar Targaryen was noticibly pissed off on the bench after giving up that pass that lead to a goal for Detroit. He broke his stick over his head and when the trainers gave him a new one he threw it down the hallway. Then with 0:39 seconds left in the 1st period and Detroit still with a 2-1 lead, Falcons forward Rising Hippo was sent to the box for goaltender interference. He was driving to the net and clearly made no effort to get out of the way of goalie Kyle Wahlgren. Wahlgren laid down on the ice and the Scarecrows were not happy. They felt Rising Hippo was trying to hurt Wahlgren on purpose and Targaryen was fuming. The 6’5 second year player wasted little time on the powerplay, tying the game 2-2 just 19 seconds later. With only 20 seconds remaining in the fireworks filled first period the Scarecrows had tied it up and had momentum back on their side. Whatever was said in the St Louis locker room between periods also helped because they came out with another quick goal only 25 seconds into the period by returning star Frans Erichsen. After a quick icing by the Faloncs Marc Leclerc rookie centre Willy Man won the face off again Nucky Toohoots and passed it right to Erichsen who snapped home a quick wrister to take the lead. Detroit wasn’t going away that easily and after a great interception in the neutral zone Cikgnar Konstantinov sent a streaking Rising Hippo in alone and he managed to score a beauty to make up for his penalty earlier in the game and tie the game 3-3 heading into the third period. Fans in the arena were filled with excitement as it seemed Detroit had the momentum heading into the third period with that goal by Hippo. It was shaping up to be an exciting finish to the Falcons home opener and fans were hoping to go home happy. The third period was a bit of a different story though. After two very tight periods in the first and second, the Falcons seemed to run out of gas in the third. Where the Scarecrows just kept pushing. St Louis saw two more goals in the period, both from rookies and went on to win the game 5-3. The game winner came from Jason Visser who won a faceoff which lead to the hardnosed goal. He clearly had lots of juice left in the tank late and left his coaches smiling. The Crows rookies weren’t finished there as one of the newest pesky faces on St Louis, Ronnie Westbrook scored to make it 5-3. Westbrook showed tons of hustle getting to multiple loose pucks and seems to work as hard or harder than anyone on the ice. Westbrook has earned a reputation already for being a bit of a shit disturber and a huge locker room favorite. Although the Falcons looked very strong in the first two periods, they just couldn’t compete in the third period when it mattered. It’s clear Detroit has a lot of talent though and once they get clicking they could be very dangerous with the likes of Hippo and Nerokov. <div align="center"> ![[Image: gN1dFAa.png]](http://i.imgur.com/gN1dFAa.png) </div>Goalie Breakdown: Kyle Wahlgren (STL), 22 saves from 25 shots - (0.880) - Kyle looked a bit shaky early in the first period but the Detroit crowd was really into it. He seemed to really calm down as the game went on and by the third period he shut the door. Sivy McSieve (DET), 20 saves from 25 shots - (0.800) - Five goals against for Sivy McSieve is not what they were looking for in their first game at home to start the year. Hello and welcome to the season opener episode of S30: A Look Back. This game will feature the season opener for entirety of the SMJHL season, the Game 1 match up between the Vancouver Whalers and the Montreal Militia.
As this is the season opener, let's take a very brief look at these two teams and how they fared against one another last season. In 10 games played last year, the Whalers were only able to muster 3 wins, and 1 OT loss, bringing their total to 3-6-1. Clearly, the Militia were the stronger squad... but then again, with the Whalers finishing 7th last year, most other teams were in the regular season. So, bringing us in to season 30, it was the Whalers looking to jump ahead of Montreal in the season series in their own arena. Alas... it was not meant to be, and the losing ways against Montreal continued, with the Militia stealing one at home. Hopefully this isn't any indication of the rest of the season to come, but at this point, it's useless to worry, so we'll get right into the action- of which there is PLENTY! <center> Montreal Milita 5 at Vancouver Whalers 3</center>Highlights Period 1, 16:12: Fight!!! <center> ![[Image: ogx3ld.jpg]](http://i54.tinypic.com/ogx3ld.jpg) It didn't take long for Ilmari Maatt to take exception to what Ieuan Llewellyn was saying about his mother</center> It was an exchange of fistcuffs between Frontdoor McGraw and Charlie Conway late in the first which brings us our first real highlight of the evening, with Ieuan instigating a fight with the Milita's Maatta. Neither was able to clearly come out on top, with the refs jumping in when it was apparent that they'd fought to a draw. With Ieuan being the clear instigator, he was sent off for the game as the refs tried to get control of this game early. Period 1, 16:52: Goal by VAN <center> ![[Image: YfamiDb.gif]](http://i.imgur.com/YfamiDb.gif) It was the old pro Levi Kubrak who got things started on the season for VAN</center> The first goal of the game, and this S30 season came at the hands of SMJHL vet Levi Kubrak, with the assist coming via two new players in Max Wilburn, Adam Kaiser. This whole play was clinical... Kubrak won the faceoff in the neutral zone (after an offsides), with Kaiser moving into the Milita zone thereafter. Two passes- tick, tack, and the puck was coming off Kubrak's stick and heading past Stephen Harris via a one timer... toe. Vancouver starts things up, 1-0. Only 20 seconds in, on the power play, it was SMJHL rookie OG Bobby getting his first point of his career. After a quick dump in by the PK unit, the puck was collected in the Vancouver zone by Connor MacDonald... A pass to OG in the neutral zone, and he was off to the races. In a very Phil Kessel way, took it upon himself to do it all... 2-0 Vancouver, and things were looking pretty rosy at this point. All 5 playesr touched the puck on 4 passes, from the time a dump in was collected in their own zone, to the time the puck was being scooped out of the back of the net by Triforce Link. Henrik Vikstrom to Johnny Watson, to Zach Zyvleski, to Nathan Russett in the neutral zone, to Wesley Wells in the Whalers zone, who ripped the shot home. Amazing display of passing and teamwork there. And so the Whalers went into the locker room up 2-1, still in control of the game. The 3rd period is where it all started to come unraveled... The Whalers could not put the pressure on nearly enough, allowing Filip Granlund to collect the puck in the neutral zone, move it into the Whalers zone, and get a pass off to a waiting Ilmari Maatta, who slid the puck home. Looks like Llewellyn shouldn't have talked so much smack, after all. 2-2, and we've got a new game on our hands. Period 3, 4:02: Goal by VAN <center> ![[Image: FrayedGiddyFowl.gif]](http://giant.gfycat.com/FrayedGiddyFowl.gif) Wait, didn't we just have a faceoff at center ice 20 seconds ago?!</center> In a game of quick strikes, Vancouer jumped back out into the lead in short order, once their dangerous first line stepped back onto the ice. It was 3 SMJHL sophomores who connected on this play, to put Vancouver up 3-2. The play started with the astute defending of Brynjar Tusk. He fed an intercepted pass to Conklin Owen, who skated into the zone, taking a shot. The near miss was collected by D man Teddy Graham, who quickly moved the puck to wide open center Jon Ross. This time, the shot was on target, and past Harris. This was starting to look like one you could pen in for Vancouver. Period 3, 4:18: Goal by MTL <center> ![[Image: TOFFOLIDUCKSFINAL.gif]](http://2.cdn.nhle.com/kings/v2/ext/images/TOFFOLIDUCKSFINAL.gif) Again, mere seconds between goals, as Nolan Angello brought things back to level</center> For the 3rd time in 36 seconds, the puck would be in the back of the net, this time off a Montreal Militia stick. The world wind of scoring continued when the Militia put together a string of 6 passes, moving in on goal with each move of the puck. The final pass came to rest on the stick of Nolan Angello, if but only for a second. In the blink of an eye, he whistled a snap shot past the blocker of the in position Link Triforce. 3-3, and we're yet again, back to a new game- with only 15 minutes left to play. Period 3, 15:55: Goal by MTL <center> ![[Image: GrandioseThinGar.gif]](http://fat.gfycat.com/GrandioseThinGar.gif) This time, Montreal would go up for good, with Wesley Wells notching his second of this night</center> In a goal which opitimized the hustle that Montreal put on display tonight, it was Wesley Wells getting his second goal of the night, the marker that put them again for good. After a series of passes which followed a Tusk turn over, Wesley took a shot on goal- which ended up being deflected by Zach Zyvleski. Triforce Link was up to the challenge of that shot, stopping it with his body- but, he hadn't seen the puck, it was his good positioning which helped him make the save. Due to that, he wasn't able to hold onto the rebound, and the puck trickled directly onto the stick of Wesley, who'd crashed the net after his initial shot. In a defensive lapse, he was allowed to come down the middle of the ice uncontested, shoveling the final dagger into the Vancouver goal. Period 3, 16:27: Goal by MTL Montreal would go on to put one more insurance marker into the net, as Link surrendered his 5th of the night to the strong offensive Militia, and 3rd PP goal they racked up. Zach Zyvleski found the goal he'd been searching for all night, as he skated from the neutral zone and onto goal uncontested. Being down a man was just too much... Stats Shots Montreal Militia: 30 Vancouver Whalers: 31 Shots were even, and quite high for both teams. Unsurprisingly, it led to plenty of goals. The quality of those shots went Montreal's way, despite the quantity not reflecting that. The high number of PP shots told a more accurate story. Hits Montreal Militia: 29 Vancouver Whalers: 17 The Whalers didn't even come close to matching the physicality of the Militia, who were suffocating the Whalers' offensive efforts all night, and pressing hard on the fore check. This was a big factor in the game. Faceoffs Montreal Militia: 40 Vancouver Whalers: 44 Montreal fell short in this stat column, but it didn't have much of a prohibitive affect on their game, as they managed to regain possession frequently via their physical play. Saves Stephen Harris (MTL), 28/31 shots (0.903) Triforce Link (VAN), 25/30 (0.833) Link was left out far too often by his PK unit, so his save percentage isn't reflective of his level of skill. On the other end, Harris had a solid game, doing enough to keep his team in the game even when they trailed. Despite the scorers at the game not giving him a 3 star nod, it may have been justified. Special Teams PIM: Montreal Militia: 13 Vancouver Whalers: 25 PP %- Montreal Militia: 75% Vancouver Whalers: 33% Vancouver lost the PIM battle, reflecting some poorly disciplined hockey. Their PK units left to try and save the day were severely undermanned, and they payed dearly for it. This was the undoing of a game in which the Whalers had the lead for most of the night. Final Commentary Vancouver played too loosely in this game, plain and simple. They allowed the Militia too much free space in which to work throughout the game. The low hit numbers, and the goals which were scored by players skating across large portions of the rink uncontested are a testament to that. It's clear they have offensive talent of their own, but their defensive core should be their strength, in front of a usually competent goalie. Poor discipline also cost them, as they gave up too many PP goals after cutting ruts to the sin bin. If they don't turn around their discipline, and start playing a tougher game, it's going to be a long season. Here's hoping for a more concerted effort, and a win, next edition of S30: A Look Back. The same Halifax team that struggled to score in the preseason came out with a bang in their home opener, defeating the Montreal Militia 5-3 in a game that was over by the first ten minutes of play. <div align="center">Starting Lineups: Halifax Raiders Jean-Luc Reflieux - Pietra Volkova - Solaire Azarov Blake Battle - Matthew Shea Richard C. Hocolate Montreal Militia Filip Granlund - Nolan Angello - Jason Forbrook Ilmari Maatta - Viatcheslav Orlov Stephen Harris </div> The biggest question after the mediocre-at-best preseason the Halifax Raiders had was whether they were going to be able to generate enough firepower to retain scoring leads. This is the kind of start to a game that boosts morale, and while they were lenient enough to allow for a late third-period drive by Montreal, Hocolate kept things shut at the back end for most of a game. This is the kind of decisive game the Raiders need to play if they want to dig themselves out of their 6th-overall grave from last season. Halifax hit it big at the draft, drafting highly-touted European prospects Pietra Volkova and Greta Iversen in the first and second rounds, taking another promising young winger in Niklas Flower at 6th overall, and finding a major steal in the former 3rd overall expectation, center Joey Ryan. The Raiders are obviously gearing up in hopes of making a deep playoff run this season. If the veterans can play like they did tonight, and the rookies step up to the plate, they should have no problem seeing themselves winning playoff match-ups. The Militia, on the other hand, struggled a bit in the draft, limited by the fact that their first pick in the draft was all the way down at #14. While they attempted to make moves in the week before the draft to push back into the first round and grab at least one of those top prospects, picks were valuable with this draft class and they were unable to acquire anything higher. Montreal management managed to make the best they could with their predicament, however, drafting promising defenseman Kristofer Hallfredsson for their strong blue line and adding two young goalies in Stephen Harris and Jeff Kirkstone. Hopefully, their picks are enough to help them get out of the playoff rut they’ve been in since their last cup. Montreal, coming off a run of disappointing early playoff exits, begins another season with the hopes of making it back to the Four Star Cup. Though the first ten minutes were disastrous at best, the Militia quickly reorganized themselves, allowing no goals through the next forty minutes. Who knows what general manager Copenhagen said to them in that locker room, but they came out in the third with a vengeance. Though damage continued to be dealt - Reflieux drove the final stake into their coffin with his eventual game-winner four minutes into the third - the Militia pushed to score three goals in the span of five minutes in an attempt to bring the game back to even footing. Unfortunately, the effort came far too late, and the Militia would ultimately fall. <b><div align="left"> PSN 3 Stars of the Game</div></b> <div align="center"> ![[Image: 5JI3lVB.jpg]](http://i.imgur.com/5JI3lVB.jpg) 1 - Jean-Luc Reflieux - The star center for the Raiders stepped up to the challenge tonight, putting in two assists and cashing in a goal of his own with six shots on the night. Coming out with a 66% faceoff percentage, the first-liner made his presence known and helped put pressure on a very demoralized Montreal defense to come out with tonight’s W.</div><div align="center"> ![[Image: tOg4F8i.jpg]](http://i.imgur.com/tOg4F8i.jpg) 2 - Victor Lindstrom - Third-line defender Victor Lindstrom played like a man possessed tonight, contributing in a effective manner to come up with two assists and a goal. The recent Los Angeles signee could see himself moving up the lines if he keeps playing like this.</div><div align="center"> ![[Image: BWeuPx0.jpg]](http://i.imgur.com/BWeuPx0.jpg) 3 - Solaire Azarov - This rookie Russian winger was brought up onto Halifax’s first line beside Pietra Volkova and Jean-Luc Reflieux after a promising preseason, and he did not disappoint. Azarov threw his weight around to force two turnovers, but more importantly, the shot pressure he generated led to that crucial third Halifax goal in the first. Expect Azarov to make it onto our 3 Stars list many more times this season.</div>8 Thoughts: Of course, after every game, we have eight thoughts, four for each of these teams, to consider about the matchup and the players involved moving forward. Here are eight thoughts on the Halifax Raiders and the Montreal Militia. <span style='color:gray'>1. When will Volkova start to score? The 5’8” winger made her presence on the ice known tonight in a different manner than the team that drafted her fourth overall was expecting. With two minor penalties, three hits, and only a single shot on goal, the speedy Russian winger looked more like an enforcer than a sniper out there tonight. Look for Volkova to try to improve against a Detroit team that may have celebrated their preseason successes a bit too early. 2. Do the Raiders regret their draft? All of Halifax’s first four draft picks failed to reach the scoreboard tonight, looking hauntingly similar to their worrying preseason. Every rookie needs time to get used to the pace of the SMJHL, but if Halifax’s top prospects don’t start producing soon, the Raiders may realize their push for postseason glory could fall shorter than expected. 3. Reflieux, while not wearing a letter this season, is playing every bit of the role of leader of the pack, carrying not only his line, but the entire Halifax offense. Three of the Raiders’ four even-strength goals came from Reflieux-generated opportunities, with one coming off his stick directly, and he’s already begun to make his mark on this season’s Halifax scoreboards. Expect to see Reflieux play a great role this season, and maybe kick that first offensive line into gear with his playmaking abilities. 4. The more time the Raiders spend in the penalty box, the less time they have on ice to generate offense and momentum. It would seem like common sense, but as evidenced by the Raiders’ penalty minutes tonight, they still haven’t gotten the message. Six different Raiders took penalties tonight, with Shea, Volkova, and Laing taking two each. Halifax is an offensively-gifted team that’s already struggling to break into success. They can’t afford to spend 18 minutes in the box a game. </span> <span style='color:maroon'>5. Ilmari Maatta is a one-man wrecking crew. The renaissanceman defender scored a goal, an assist, and received two minors in a valiant second- and third-period push to even the score. He serves as an example, even this early in the season, of what the Montreal prospects should be striving for in-game. The Montreal captain will be playing a big role in a Montreal team that’s working hard for their first Four Star Cup since S27 after two brutal, consecutive early round sweeps. 6. Montreal’s leadership crew is solid so far, with the captain and both his alternates pulling the team by its bootstraps and leading the charge. Though their work fell short this time around, their performances today are not to be dismissed. Viatcheslav Orlov came up with two assists that led to crucial goals that, in any other situation, might have been good enough to salvage the game in favor of Montreal once again. Though returning star Nolan Angello didn’t make it onto the scoreboard tonight, he managed to rack up a shot count and create pressure in front of the net that would eventually lead to rebound opportunities. If they can keep this up, not only will they be making big strides, they’ll be leading the way for their rookies to do the same. 7. Montreal needs to start games off smartly - they’ve already exemplified a tendency to let games get away from them too quickly. If they had been smarter with their puck possession and prevented shots on goal early on, they might have had a greater fighting chance in the last minutes of the game. Look towards not only the skaters in suppressing opportunities, but also the goalies - Harris was pulled in favor of Kirkstone far later than he should have been, and the damage was done. The more into their heads Montreal gets as they continue to get scored on, the less likely they are to dig themselves out of their hole. 8. The Militia clearly have the right idea when it comes to trying to recover leads: shoot, shoot, shoot. Montreal consistently outshot the Raiders throughout the game. Was it a goalie battle, then? Perhaps. More specifically, it was just a lack of rebounds that didn’t allow them to score. 1-3 </div>Game Link Detroit takes its traveling media circus and rap emporium to the ScotiaBank Centre, as the Falcons face the Halifax Raiders. Both teams enjoyed a rest on day three, although Halifax enters in a much better mood after winning their last game against Montreal. Halifax also left in a happy mood, taking a 3-1 victory while Detroit falls to 0-2-1 after winning the elusive and mystical preseason championship. 1st Period Good news, bad news, Halifax fans! Bad news first: Your team took a penalty in the first period ... and another ... and another. Good news, Richard C. Hocolate was up to the task, stopping five shots during the three penalty kills, none bigger than a pair of saves during the 16th minute. Quote:... puck along the blue line, Alex Berkis scrapping with Blake Battle for the puck. Berkis comes out with it, pass to Sinikka, SHOT AND BATTED AWAY by Hocolate! Quote:Now Prince Daniel James chases down the puck after a successful clear, 1:30 remaining in the power play for the Falcons. James sends it up the ice to Zach Evans, Evans with some space, Evans carries it into the attacking zone, Evans fires, ANOTHER SAVE BY HOCOLATE! This time he covers, faceoff coming. When the dust settled, Detroit and Halifax went to the locker rooms for the first intermission, tied 0-0. 2nd period The were several more people headed to the penalty box in the second period, thanks to a massive brawl seven and a half minutes into the second period. He has skated over to the ... I believe he has a boombox and a microphone over by the Detroit bench. That’s a peculiar strategy. Eventually, order was restored, with Detroit somehow earning a power play after everyone was sent to the sin bin except for Sinikka. Finally, Detroit broke through on the power play. Quote:McSieve recovers the dump, plays it to Berkis. Berkis shuffles it to Edvins Berzins. Into the attacking zone, back to Berkis. Berkis loses it, Moleman is there, he recovers. Moleman, looking some space, fires, IT’S IN! Detroit breaks through with the first goal of the game, I believe it was deflected by Berkis in front of the net! Certainly Berkis thinks that, as he celebrates with his linemates. Nonetheless, it is Detroit 1, Halifax 0 with 11:29 remaining in the second period. 3rd period Following Berkis’ goal, Detroit was 20 minutes away from its first victory of the season. However, Halifax had other ideas for the third period. The Raiders first tied the game on a beautifully executed play ending in a Jean-Luc Reflieux goal. Quote:... Azarov carries the puck across the blue line as the clock hits 15:00 remaining in the third. Pass to Shea, now along the boards to Battle at the point. Battle hesitates, now to Pietra Volkova. Volkova finds Reflieux, Reflieux trying to create, now drops it back to Volkova near the blue line. Volkova ... PASS TO REFLIEUX IN FRONT OF THE NET AND HE PUTS IT IN! Perfect pass to the cutting Reflieux, who buries the shot above McSieve’s left shoulder, and we are tied up in Halifax! Two and a half minutes later, Halifax would strike again to take a 2-1 lead. McSieve has had a rough start to this season, but he was stranded on an island on that one after the offensive zone turnover.Halifax would drive home the final nail in the waning seconds, as Joey Ryan put away a rebound goal to give Halifax the 3-1 win. McSieve could only get a pad on Flower’s shot, Ryan pounced on the rebound and buried it. 3-1 Halifax with 44 seconds remaining in a three-goal third period for the Raiders. Three Stars Third Star - Reed Laing, Halifax: The rookie right winger scored the go-ahead goal for the Raiders, while also tallying up a pair of hits in the contest. Second Star - Colin Banning, Halifax: The straw that stirred the drink for Halifax on both ends of the ice. Banning assisted on both Laing and Ryan’s goals while laying a couple of hits and blocking two shots. First Star - Richard C. Hocolate: The team’s best penalty killer on a ngiht that saw six Detroit power plays, Hocolate was sensational in net. Hocolate stopped 33 of Detroit’s 34 shots, improving to 2-1-0 with a .923 save percentage and a 2.33 GAA. Notebook Best of Three?: Tonight’s game marked the first of three consecutive games between the Raiders and Falcons. Tomorrow, the two teams will meet in Detroit, before returning to Halifax for the final game of the “series.†It will be critical for the Falcons to pick up a home win tomorow before returning to Halifax. Otherwise, they could be returning home winless through six games to face Prince George. McSieve’s Struggles: Sivy McSieve is arguably one of the most talented goalies in the SMJHL, a returning netminder given the starting nod while Jeremy Anderson develops under his tutelage. However, McSieve has been nothing short of awful in S30, following up a pedestrian preseason with a slow start to the regular season. After allowing three goals on 21 shots tonight, McSieve holds a .828 save percentage and a 3.57 GAA. To the Victor Goes the Spoils: Hocolate is leading the SMJHL in save percentage, but his teammates are blocking their fair share of pucks as well. Victor Lindstrom, in his second season with the Raiders, blocked six Detroit shots in the third period of the game. Including a pair of back-to-back shots by Alex Berkis and Prince Daniel James in the second minute of the period. Without the “points†to his credit, Lindstrom will be overlooked in the box score, but his defensive sacrifices were critical to the Halifax victory.

Prince George Firebirds 3 at Colorado Mammoths 4</div></b>Game Link <b><div align="center">BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF GAME</div> </b> In what is gearing up to be an intense (one-sided) rivalry, Prince George face Colorado for the 2nd time out of 3 in the opening week. This game, like the previous 3 played so far(including preseason) was within 2 goals, but like the 3 previous, was eventually won by Colorado. <b><div align="center">LONG SUMMARY OF GAME</div></b> 1st period Within the first minute of the game, 2nd pair defenseman Barak Obrana takes an Interference penalty. This sets up a situation where the mammoths might be able to take an early lead on the firebirds, but Colorado Mammoths D William Goddard fails a pass, and unfortunately ices the puck. This leads to a faceoff in the Colorado Mammoths zone, won by Prince George star center and captain, Casper Jakobsson, who immediately passes the puck to rookie Eduard Selich. Selich is hit by the aforementioned Goddard and loses the puck, but retrieves it and snipes Colorado goalie Ekaterina Rudnikova top corner. 1:14 of 1st period - Goal by Eduard Selich - Colorado Mammoths : 0 - Prince George Firebirds : 1. – SH This goal somehow remains the only recorded on net shot of the entire game for over 5 minutes. Towards the 5 minute mark, Colorado rookie Taro Eichelele dumps the puck for a line change. It is retrieved by Barak Obrana, but his outlet pass is intercepted by Sim Browski. On a 3v2 possession, and no way to stop the rush, Prince George Goalie Ace Dafoe concedes to star Colorado forward Steven Stamkos Jr. 5:41 of 1st period - Goal by Steven Stamkos Jr. - Colorado Mammoths : 1 - Prince George Firebirds : 1. It seems, much like some Republican voters would say, that Barak Obrana is doing nothing right. The rest of the period continues as Prince George and Colorado trade momentum and possession, and the period ends 1-1, with Prince George having a shot lead of 8 to Colorado’s 6. 2nd period The period starts horribly for the Prince George Firebirds, as their top center loses a faceoff to a winger, and Colorado easily cruises into the Prince George zone. A sequence of passes leads to Stamkos Jr. taking a shot, missing, with the free puck retrieved by Maverick O’Dooley. He passes to Stamkos Jr., who loses handle of the puck while trying to deke Johnny Pollak. The puck is retrieved by top line winger Frontdoor Mcgraw, who puts it past Dafoe. 0:20 of 2nd period - Goal by Frontdoor McGraw - Colorado Mammoths : 2 - Prince George Firebirds : 1. The rest of the period is uneventful until Obrana dumps the puck into the Mammoths zone for a line change. Rudnikova retrieves the puck and passes it to Goddard, who outlet passes it to defensive partner Matthew Leetch. Leetch skates into the Prince George zone and shoots it himself, Dafoe giving up a rebound, which is pounced on by Eichelele. Eichelele misses the net, but it bounces off the boards and amidst the confusion, Eichelele sneaks it into the net. 3:01 of 2nd period - Goal by Taro Eichelele - Colorado Mammoths : 3 - Prince George Firebirds : 1. The next 10 or so minutes of the game were back and forth, and it seems like Prince George had possibly not yet lost confidence. William Norstrom makes a pass to Michael Young, who then gets his pass stormed by McGraw. Unfortunately, McGraw pounces on it too quickly, and is whistled off side. The ensuing faceoff is won by Jakobsson, who passes it to recent signing Sven Wolf. Wolf’s pass is intercepted by William Goddard in the Firebirds zone, and he passes it to Jacob Renninger, who one-times it past the demotivated and tired Ace Dafoe. Dafoe had let in 4 goals on 11 shots, and Backup Goalie Ben Waters was brought in to attempt to limit the damages. 13:11 of 2nd period - Goal by Jacob Renninger - Colorado Mammoths : 4 - Prince George Firebirds : 1. 13:11 of 2nd period - Ben Waters enters game. The rest of the period was a bunch of nothing. Colorado dominated this period in spurts, and those spurts would go on to win them the game. 3rd period This period starts off with a lot of hits thrown between both teams. Towards the beginning of the 2nd minute, Prince George center Joseph Riccardelli dumps the puck for a line change. This puck is retrieved by Rudnikova, and a familiar rush that has led to a goal multiple times for Colorado starts once more. This leads to a very confusing series of events, where Colorado forward Evgeny Yakikov misses a pass and it lands on the stick of Tyrone Savage, who instantly passes it back to Yakikov. Yakikov then again fails a pass, and it is intercepted by Norstrom in his zone. On the ensuing 3v1 onto Yakikov, Hylytyr NoRetornable passes it to Wolf, who dangles Rudnikova and scores. 2:27 of 3rd period - Goal by Sven Wolf - Colorado Mammoths : 4 - Prince George Firebirds : 2. Once more, the next stretch in the game is a period of nothingness, as only 2 shots happen in the next 8 minutes. NoRetornable starts a line change, and Rudnikova skates out and passes the puck to Stamkos Jr. The former fails his pass and it is intercepted by Obrana, who sends it to Jakobsson. Jakobsson passes it to Kottbulle in the Colorado zone, and Kottbulle scores on a slapper. Prince George is back in this. 10:11 of 3rd period - Goal by Tapper Kottbulle - Colorado Mammoths : 4 - Prince George Firebirds : 3. The final 10 minutes of this game was a Waters show, as he stopped 6 more shots, not giving up a rebound on any single one of them. He did his absolute best to keep his team in the game, and was rewarded with a 1.000 SV% to show for it, but unfortunately, not a victory. <div align="center">TSN TURNING POINT</div> The early 2nd period onslaught by the Colorado Mammoths completely changed an even game into an abomination. While the score was close, the game was completely changed by the 2 goals in 3 minutes conceded at the beginning of the middle third. If the Firebirds had managed to tie the game, the TSN Turning point could easily have been Waters entering the game, as he was lights out and did his best to keep his team in a boring game. <div align="center"> 3 STARS OF THE GAME</div> 3- Ben Waters(PGF) Yes, I’m putting myself in. Fight me. In all seriousness, Ben Waters’ 8 saves were as impactful as they come, each one more important than the last. Had he let one in, this game would have been a mismatch, and he was vital to PG even having a chance in this one. 2- Steven Stamkos Jr.(COL) Steven Stamkos Jr. was all over the ice this game, grabbing 2 points and being a defensive rock as well. His FO% wasn’t top quality, but his impact on the ice makes up for that completely. 1 – Frontdoor McGraw(COL) While the uneducated might say: “STAMKOS HAD 2 POINTS WHY ISN’T HE 1ST STAR”, they didn’t understand how much of an impact McGraw’s goal had on the game. It was huge. You could even say it won the game. It threw Colorado into a state of complete momentum and control over the game. Had there been no goal 20 seconds into the 2nd period, we might have seen a completely different result. Western Conference rivals, Kelowna and Colorado duked it out in an impressive showcase of skill, strength, and star power. All eyes were back on rookie goaltender Jason Aittokallio, taken first overall in this year’s SMJHL draft, after his superb start to the week, but those looking for a repeat performance were disappointed. The Colorado crowd, though, certainly wasn’t. The minute the puck dropped, the crowd was on its feet, and it seemed like the noise level never went down from there. First Period The first period started with a bang - literally - as Kelowna forward Ty Justice dropped the gloves with Mammoths forward Martin Svensson. Only seconds before, Svensson had laid a big hit on Kelowna’s Dieter Dominique, and although Dominique got up and continued the play, Justice had no hesitation in sticking up for his teammate. On the powerplay, Kelowna found their best chance of the game: Quote:Yanovich with a shot off a feed from Kasparek - oh! And he just barely misses the net! Kasparek is back for it, though, and dodges around Goddard before ripping it on goal! Rudnikova is there, though, with an absolutely spectacular kick save. The puck bounces back out to Hohenberg, and she’s winding up - and it’s gloved by Rudnikova! The whistle blows, and it looks like the Mammoths might make it out of this penalty kill unscathed.Shots were traded back and forth, but for a while, it looked like neither team was going to break through - until a little over midway through the period. Quote:The Mammoths are in the middle of a change as Light moves the puck through the neutral zone, saucering it to Wilson just in time to stay onside. Wilson shoots from the point - puck goes wide. Beau Bent skates around the net to retrieve it, taking a shot from a low angle, and Goddard is there to block it! It rebounds directly to Bent, and he’s alone in the slot, and he SCORES! Beau Bent rips it home and gives the Knights the lead.Bent’s goal would stand alone as the only goal of the period, and the teams would return to their locker rooms with the score at 1-0. Shots: 8-6 Second Period Colorado came out hard at the start of the second, but both teams looked evenly matched, with both goalies standing on their heads as the second period progressed. The tension from the opening period continued, with Horvat tripping Yakikov 5 minutes into the second. Yakikov retaliated, and was sent off for roughing. The teams took the ice even at 4 players a side, and as Colorado laid the pressure on even harder, the payoff became inevitable. Quote:Stamkos Jr. wins it off the faceoff, and he finds O’Dooley still in Colorado’s zone, and it’s a quick pass up to Dover, who’s looking for McGraw but his pass is picked off by Hohenberg! She takes it behind the net before trying to find Justice, but now her pass is taken by O’Dooley, and he finds Dover, and Dover SCORES! He passes to Goddard, who finds Maguku in the neutral zone. Oh, and watch Maguku move with that puck! He’s around Starosta in an instant, and Aittokallio barely even gets his glove up! The Mammoths SCORE! That’s a power play goal for you there, Colorado, make some noise!The Knights pushed hard after losing their lead, but the period would finish with the Mammoths up 2-1. Shots: 15-24 Third period It was another quick start to the third period, as Kelowna fought desperately to make up the one-goal deficit. Colorado was quicker, though, and only two minutes into the period, managed to extend their lead to 2. Quote:The Knights win the faceoff, but Sirmais’ pass is picked off by Goddard right as they enter Colorado’s zone. He find Svensson, and Svensson is off! He’s through the neutral zone, and what a move to get around Shirobokov! He loses the puck as he tries to move around Bergfalk, but Goddard is right behind him to pick it up, and he finds Svensson in the slot, who SCORES! He hammers it home for his first regular-season goal in the SMJHL, and that’s a hell of a way to get it done, kid!Kasparek would get his second minor of the game 5 minutes into the period, but Kelowna killed the penalty off successfully, due in large part to the play of Aittokallio. The kill seemed to give the Knights more of the momentum they so desperately needed, because they continued to push hard into the Colorado zone. Quote:Rudnikova fishes the puck out from behind the net and sends it up ice to Svensson, who’s looking for Maguku. Maguku has it, but looses it to Dominique in Colorado’s zone. Dominique find Yanovich, all alone in the slot, and he fires off a quick slap shot and SCORES! This game isn’t over yet, as the Knights shrink their deficit back to one!Sadly for the Knights, it wasn’t to be, as Colorado found a goal late in the period. Quote: Leetch dumps the puck into the Knights’ zone before heading off for a chance, and Hohenberg picks it up at the red line. She sends it straight back to Legend, though, just coming off the bench, and he sees Renninger behind him, who shoots just wide! Legend catches the bounce off the boards, though, and he’s right on top of Aittokallio, and he SCORES! No team managed to beat opponents' goalkeepers, however, one of the more memorable things in the 1st period was an elbowing call on Rising Hippo in the second minute. It turned out that every on-ice player for Halifax got a penalty, but for Detroit only 4 players got penalized, therefore Detroit got a powerplay. He also did his true job as a defenseman and made 2 hits and blocked 2 shots. 1. Richard C. Hocolate Quote:Richard C. Falcons quite heavily outshot the Raiders, mainly because of 6 powerplays they had, but thanks to Hocolate in goal the home team only conceded one and ultimately were the victorious team. <div align="center"> Stats breakdown</div> Shots: 34 21The Raiders got heavily outshot, yet, as mentioned before, thanks to great goalkeeping by Richard C. Hocolate they managed to limit Falcons scoring to only one goal. Powerplay: 1 for 6 0 for 1Poor powerplay converting was also one of the main reasons why Falcons lost this game. They can't blame it on a lack of chances, because they got more than needed to eventually win the game, yet they didn't. However, the Raiders can praise their penalty killing. Defensive stats: 17 hits and 8 blocked shots 21 hits and 13 blocked shotsAlthough Falcons were the better team at making shots (though, as we know, not making them count), they were the worse team defensively, which ultimately lead to a defeat. Raiders proved that their defense is one of the best, if not the best in the SMJHL.

Montreal Militia 4 – St. Louis Scarecrows  3 SOStarting Lineups St Louis Eugene Feist, Casper Ek, Joe Kurczewski Danny Foster, Rhaegar Targaryen Kyle Wahlgren Montreal Filip Granlund, Nolan Angello, Jason Forbrook Ilmari Maatta, Viatcheslav Orlov Jeff Kirkstone This game was back and forth throughout the night. What started as a 2 goal lead for the Scarecrows going into the second was quickly cut with two comeback goals from the Militia. Not being able to finish in regulation, the game was sent to a shootout where Jason Forbrook of the Militia sealed the deal in the 5th round of the shootout. Game Link One of the most exciting games of the season came between the Militia and the Scarecrows. The game started out with high intensity as both teams were battling back and forth in the first few minutes. However, 5:12 in the first period, Kristofer Hallfredsson took a crucial penalty for Montreal which sent the Scarecrows to the powerplay. Monreal almost survived, however DarryL Landry found the open space to walk up and fire a shot low blocker side on Kirkstone. ![[Image: 6LXqo4R.gif]](http://i.imgur.com/6LXqo4R.gif) From there St Louis took control and Nate Akeson scored with just 3 minutes remaining in the first. St Louis ended up outshooting Montreal 9-4 in the first period. However, they say that a 2 goal lead is the worst lead in hockey and this proved to be true. TSN Turning Point : The TSN turning point in the game was Ronnie Westbrook’s goalie interference penalty which sent an already hungry Militia team to the powerplay. ![[Image: cropped_niemigif.gif]](https://d13csqd2kn0ewr.cloudfront.net/uploads/image/file/25529/cropped_niemigif.gif) Montreal quickly capitalized with a goal from Filip Granlund. 2 minutes later, Monreal tied the game when Zach Zyvleski was sprung on a breakaway and went five hole on Kyle Wahlgren. In the final period both teams scored one goal a piece when Zyvleski got his second of the game for Montrela and Eugene Feist equalizing the game with only 34 seconds left. With everything all said and done, overtime settled nothing and it was off to a shootout. The Goaltenders were solid in the first 4 rounds stopping each shooter for both teams. However it was Scott Escobar from the Scarecrows who broke the tie and put pressure on veteran Nolan Angello to tie the game. Angello made no mistake going top shelf. Kurczewski missed for St louis and it was all left for Jason Forbrook to win it for the Militia. Kelowna Knights 3 AT St. Louis Scarecrows 2 </div><div align="center">Game Link</div> It was the first meeting of the season between the Knights and Scarecrows. The game featured some great penalty killing from both teams, combining for a perfect 7/7. Despite the score being close, the game was mostly dominated by the Knights, outshooting the Scarecrows 32 - 15. 1st Period GOAL - KEL - Burrows from Sirmais. The Scottrade Center was rocking before the puck drop but that did not seem to bother the Kelowna Knights. The Knights came out firing on all cylinders notching their first goal 4 minutes into the game. Justs Sirmais won the faceoff right to Michael Burrows who sniped one past Wahlgren for his 2nd of the season. 1 - 0 Knights GOAL - KEL - Dominique from Kasparek and Sirmais. The Scarecrows power play struggled tonight, they allowed their first short handed goal of the season. Kasparek spotted Dominique splitting the Crows defense, feeding him a beautiful pass. The Scarecrows were able to score a late 1st period goal to keep the game interesting. Bent was able capitalise on the juicy rebound from Wahlgren, scoring his second goal on the season. Justice launched a rocket entering the zone and the puck bounced right to Bent for the easy finish. 3 - 1 Knights. ![[Image: giphy.gif]](https://media.giphy.com/media/rpCqG0x4POPjW/giphy.gif) GOAL STL - Kurczewski from Ek and Reine Just ten seconds later Knights goalie Jason Aittokallio let in a goal that he would like to forget. Kurczewski through an easy puck to the net that Aittokallio bobbled and rolled past him. 3 - 2 Knights. 3rd Period It was a real quiet 3rd period with only nine shots total. The Knights shutdown the Scarecrows, barely giving them any room to breathe. Aittokallio shook off his last mistake and stopped the Crows final 5 shots.
