<div align="center">Game 26 Montreal 2 vs Halifax 4
In this game we saw the last place Halifax Raiders taking on the surging Montreal Militia. It was not the night for Montreal as Halifax stormed through with a 4-2 win while also outshooting the Militia 25-23. This was a much needed game for Halifax to stay in the race for a playoff spot.
Game Link
First Period
The first period was all Montreal in terms of shots and opportunities. Montreal came firing right out of the gate and managed 12 shots on Georgette Pel. However, it was all for not as Halfiax was able to get on the board first with a beautiful tic tac toe play as Jean-Luc Reflieux finished it off on the powerplay.

Montreal however did not give up and managed to tie the game 10 seconds later as Angello went coast to coast for an amazing goal.

The crowd was back into it and Montreal seemed to have gained some momentum. However, Montreal couldn’t sustain the pressure as Halifax’s Reed Laing scored his third of the season 11:32 in on the powerplay with a one timer from the dot.

Second Period
From here on out, it was all downhill for the Militia. Halfiax was dominant keeping Montreal in their own zone for the majority of the period. Montreal was also getting tired, and therefore took many penalties which hurt them badly. Blake Battle scored his second of the season 15:08 into the period with Halfiax’s third goal on the powerplay this game. Montreal was outshot 11-5 in the period.

Third Period:
It was a quiet third period with each team only managing 6 shots on net each, however each team was able to find the back of the net once with Greta Eversen for Halifax scoring her second of the season and Johnny Watson getting his first on the powerplay. In the end, Montreal just didn’t have enough firepower to get through the game and make the comeback.

Make it or Break it
The Make it or Break it moment of the game was the Halfiax powerplay. It made it for them as they were able to tally up 3 goals from being on the man advantage, something they have been struggling to do all season long. With constant goals on the powerplay, Montreal was not able to get any momentum and therefore could not climb back into the game. Although the only ended with 33% on the powerplay, it was the constant threat of being able to score and the pressure they were able to put that made Montreal draw 9 penalties in total.

Day 12, Game 35: Colorado Mammoths vs. the Prince George Firebirds

Pre-Game</div>
Denver, Colorado – After an up then down start to the season Colorado Mammoths are coming off two wins in a row, while Prince George has a 3 game win streak. The Mammoths lead the season series 2-1, a marked improvement from last season where they only managed a single win in 9 tries against the Firebirds.

The Firebirds will look for leadership from do-everything center Casper Jakobsson and powerful defensemen Hunky Monkey and Barak Obrana. And the vets are getting help from the kids as 8 PG rookies have already booked 4 or more points this season. The Mammoths are currently being paced by their top 3 defenders, Goddard, O'Dooley, and Dover. Goddard is turning heads with his start to the season leading all defensemen in scoring and having notched 10 assists in the opening 8 games. Rookies Renninger (3 game goal scoring streak) and Eichelele (points in each of last 7 games) are hoping to keep contributing.

Both teams also feature some bruisers and it wouldn't be a stretch to see Colton Hagan (29PIM) or Hunky Monkey (18 PIM) drop the gloves at some point.

<div align="center">1st Period</div>
Both teams came out tentatively while Waters and Rudnikova looked impenetrable. Neither goaltender allowed a rebound until midway through the 2nd. However, with both teams combining for only 7 shots in the first, despite 3 power plays, this was quickly becoming a sleepy affair.

<div align="center">2nd Period</div>
Things became chippier in the 2nd, with Colordao taking a string of penalties. Finally, on their 5th power play try, the Hylytyr NoRetornable broke through with his first of the season and the game's first night. [Image: G0AL.gif] 1-0 Firebirds at 10:57.
Quote:Hagan and now Riccardelli&nbsp; have been asked out of the circle and Hertzberg will go up against McGraw. Hertzberg wins it back to Pollack. Pollack sends it across to Monkey who fires one on, but O'Dooley gets in the way. Hertzberg tries to come away with it but it's knocked loose by Hagan. Pollak picks up the loose puck and they set up again as he kicks it out to Monkey. He finds NoRetornable stepping in and HE SCORES! Put Hylytyr on the highlight reel and Prince George has the lead

30 seconds later, Sven Wolf doubled the lead with a great put back. [Image: G0AL.gif] 2-0 Firebirds at 11:30.

Sim Browski was responsible for the power play that resulted in the first goal and when his next shift saw the Mammoths in a 2 goal hole he displayed his frustration on the opening faceoff with a high sticking charge.

<div align="center">3rd Period</div>
The Firebirds came out guns blazing, rifling 5 shots off in the first 30 seconds. However, much like a classic episode of the A-Team,
nothing was on target. Somehow they managed a repeat performance just before the 5 minute mark.

Inspired by their 7th penalty kill of the night, at the 14 minute mark, the Mammoths' 4th line came up big again with a goal that added some doubt to the outcome. [Image: G0AL.gif] 2-1 Firebirds at 14:13. Here's the call:
Quote:Selich has it poked away by Yvel and the Mammoths are back to full strength as Legend exits the box. They need a line change and Yvel is will dump the puck into the Firebirds zone. Six minutes left in regulation, now. Norstrom with the puck for the Birds, Eichelele pressuring him and he comes away with it. Passes it back to Goddard who sends it across to Leetch, who takes a one-timer - just wide! Eichelele recovers it behind the net and tries to sneak one in but Waters is there and kicks it away. Leetch is right on it and puts away the rebound! His first of the season and the Mammoths are alive!

From there, Colorado kept the pressure on and with 40 seconds left pulled Rudnikova for the extra skater. Looking for an opening, Dover's pass is intercepted by Selich who findsHertzberg. Hertzberg carries it end to end and dishes to Jakobsson for the empty netter. [Image: G0AL.gif] 3-1 Firebirds at 19:39.

NoRetornable's power play goal10:57. The Mammoths seemed to be weathering the storm of penalties they had taken and it seemed only a matter of time before they would start to find some offense. However, they completely lost composure following the first goal, allowing a second 30 seconds later and taking an undisciplined penalty immediately after that.

Key Stats:
Penalties and faceoffs. The Mammoths were booked for 8 offenses to the Firebirds' 3. Prince George scored their first goal on the man advantage and while Colorado's defense did an admirable job shutting down the other 7 chances, it left them with very few offensive chances. And when the Mammoths weren't in the sin bin, they still didn't seem interested in possessing the puck, as the Firebirds dominated the faceoff circle 43 to 25.

The Mammoths had their worst period of the season in the 2nd, when they took 4 penalties and managed 0 shots on net! The team did manage to block 14 shots in addition to Rudnikova's 18 saves.

You'll forgive Ben Waters for thinking he had the night off as he only faced 9 shots in total. It's hard to believe that this one was close going into the final minute.

GAME RECAP:
This game was the second of two consecutive meetings, with Montreal losing the first game at home in a 10 goal game. These two teams feature top end talent that was put on display in the first game. Emotions in the locker room were high and those expecting a heated affair would not be disappointed.

This game started off with a BANG! as Detroit #1 centerman Nucky Toohoots snipes a low glove shot that beats MTL netminder Stephen Harris just 47 seconds in, setting the tone early for this battle and deflating some of the energy the Militia brought in.

The next eight or so minutes Stephen Harris and his Militia team are trapped in their end seldom able to change, Harris makes several saves in a row making way for a Henrik Vikstrom breakaway and an absolutely filthy albeit controversial goal that many are saying should have been called back! Vikstrom lifted the puck with his stick and managed a javelin-like throw over the glove of a then furious Jeremy Anderson.

Quote:Anderson post-game: "How is that s**t even legal

Three minutes later and the controversy was erased as Zach Evans put one through Stephen Harris' five-hole to bring the Falcons back into the lead. Tensions ran high however, and the game saw an all out fisticuffs war between C Marcos Maciel and winger Hans Moleman break out:

(actual footage)

The fight failed to garner much morale for Montreal as they gave up a top shelf wrister from Nucky Toohoots minutes later. The team's fate appeared to be sealed, as they put in a couple more chippy goals but were unable to rally after Nucky shoveled his 3rd goal into the net and hats came raining down. Stephen Harris was pulled in the 3rd period, the 3rd time in 4 outings. And Montreal failed to even out the series between them and the red hot falcons.

Nucky Toohoots had this to say after his exciting night
Quote:Huge night for my career, I know I won't have a shortage of hats to wear when I visit the beach this summer!

Summary

Heading in two different directions, Colorado visited St. Louis for their second matchup of a season starting to take form. In the first game, Colorado would use a first period barrage to cruise to a 3-2 victory. Unlike the game six days ago, St. Louis would have an answer for everything Colorado had to throw at them.

The Scarecrows would turn the tables on the Mammoths in the 1st period. After Matthew Leetch would take a minor roughing call on a risky check during a scramble in front of the crease, the Scarecrows turned to one of the league most potent power plays. It only took 16 seconds for Kelly Rivet to blow a snap shot past Rudnikova's glove and make it 1-0 off a beautiful saucer from Casper Ek. The Scarecrows would take a commanding 3-0 lead in the closing minutes of the period as Rhaegar Targaryen and Nate Akeson added to their respective goal totals.

The second period presented an opportunity for the Scarecrows to bury the game and they took full advantage. As Dos Diablo skated up the side boards Rivet found him and laced a cross-ice pass that Diablo took in stride out skated Ben Dover and buried a shot five hole after a nifty little backhand to forehand deke. Any momentum the Mammoths had was lost and in a ditch effort Rudnikova was pulled for Curtis Allison. While fighting his way through the remainder of the period, the Mammoths could only manage five shots and only one scoring chance that was thwarted when Nick Celej blocked a shot in front of what was a wide open goal.

[Image: Screen%20shot%202012-05-15%20at%209.55.59%20PM.png]

Entering the final period, you could tell the Mammoths came out with a sense of urgency. Steven Stamkos Jr. had a one timer robbed by an out stretched Wahlgren, while minutes later Maverick O'Dooley would miss the net on a high quality opportunity from the slot. Where the Mammoths weren't capitalizing, the Scarecrows continued their ways as Rivet earned his fourth point of the game while assisting one of two power play goals in the third period.

"It isn't a surprise with these outcomes when Rivet is out there running point on these power play opportunities. It has been a crazy ride to the start of this season, but we look forward to working as a team to continue this trek. We have the target on our back clearly as defending champs, but there are plenty new faces in the locker room including myself." Wahlgren explained after his 2nd shutout of the season.

Times in St. Louis currently have been light-hearted as their recent tear continues.

1st Star - Kyle Wahlgren - Second shutout in three games describes the trend, but more over is generating more and more confidence with every game.

2nd Star - Kelly Rivet - Following up on recent success, Rivet truly has become a wrecking ball and terrible match up for opposing teams. He finished the contest with one goal and three assists while being on the ice for all three power play goals.

3rd Star - Nate Akeson - Notching his 5th and 6th goals of the season, Akeson has become a viable threat every shift. Earning more and more ice time, Akeson should continue to see his stats rise if the young star continues his hard work effort.

<div align="center">Prince George Firebirds vs. Colorado Mammoths</div>
<div align="center">2-1</div>

This electric night started off early with the Mammoths Maverick O'Dooley taking a tripping penalty less than six minutes in. Gutler of the Birds' picked up a hooking only a couple minutes later, and Hunky Monkey was called in or a holding. Ultimately, Monkey's penalty wouldn't impact the Firebirds that much and they even scored a short handed goal off it.

Moving into the second, the period opened up with a hard flying fight between Evgeny Yakikov of the Mammoths and Michael Young of the Firebirds. The went it for a few seconds, and the Firebirds Young won the fight, tipping the momentum in Prince George's favor. Riding the wave of adrenaline the Firebirds moved forward and Sven Wolf slammed home a goal. The Mammoths weren't out though, picked up a goal for themselves to bring the score to 2-1. Late in the period Wolf picked up a minor for high sticking.

The third period was eventful, and started with Ben Dover for Colorado taking a rather interesting diving penalty. A couple minutes later, Browski got one for high sticking, and it would lead into Josh O'Brian's trip. Frederick Boone got one for interference in a strong offensive attempt, and to lead the period out William Goddard made a strong attempt at a goal but caused his team a two minute penalty, possibly costing them the game.

Tonight's Turning Point

Tonight's turning point came in the second period, when Yakikov and Young took to the fists for a hard knock fight. Young's victory gave the Firebirds the momentum they needed to score a second goal, one that would end up being the game winner.

Player Comparison

Firebirds - Sven Wolf - Firebirds

Wolf had a great night, putting up a goal and an assist for the victorious Firebirds. His success all through the game in terms of setting up offensive opportunities for his teammates and playing a strong defensive game showed the true steel in his style of play.

Mammoths - Maverick O'Dooley - Mammoths

O'Dooley may not have had the biggest offensive night, but his physical presence was massive. On the night he dished out five hits and had a shot blocked in one of the most defensively sound games by any player so far this season. The two players had drastically different nights, but both had large impacts on the game.

Three Stars

1st Star - Casper Jakobsson Firebirds

Tonights first star is upcoming star Casper Jakobsson who has been leading the Firebirds offensively all season. In putting up a goal and an assist he has solidified himself as one of the team's premier players.

2nd Star - Sven Wolf Firebirds

Wolf already got the spotlight tonight with the player comparison, but his play also earned him the second star of the game. One of the top young rookies for the Firebirds this season, Wolf played a great game putting up not only offensively but also had three hits.

3rd Star - Barak Obrana Firebirds

Obrana is a legendary player in the eyes of many, and is one of the oldest players in the SMJHL currently. This player put up an assist and three hits for a very strong night easily worthy of the third star.

raiders Halifax Raiders raiders vs. Knights Kelowna Knights Knights
3 - 6

A 6-3 game between the two competitive teams out of opposite conferences, Halifax started off with well before faltering and ultimately collapsing from the Knights' offensive capabilities. Former Sweden WJC GM Blake Laflamme will be joining us here to dish out his takes on the major points of the game and why Halifax may have collapsed so easily under pressure. Many believed that Halifax would be the clear cut favorite coming into the season but that definitely hasn't been the case, the team still adjusting to chemistry issues when it comes to depth scoring. It all comes down to their rookies and many of us here believe they will finally start producing down the line.

BL: It was a completely wild game when it came to physicality, a lot of emotions running high for the players in this game and it's really insane how far many of them went this game when it comes to stray sticks, hooking and roughing each other up. I'm all down for some physical play but sometimes it can cost your team dearly. The first three goals of the game came off the power play, it's honestly great to see them all converting on the special units and after the Banning goal, things were looking up for Halifax--- For about 20 seconds before Sirmais of Kelowna ties it up, followed by ANOTHER Knights goal by Dominique about the same time frame later to take the lead. Completely shocked by the Halifax lapse in judgement here but it's really difficult to play against a Knights team that has done so well converting on their chances-- Even though Halifax did a good job on the penalty kill.

[Image: nhl-pittsburgh-penguins-edmonton-oilers-590x900.jpg]
Pel in Warm-Up

BL: Defensive play and pressure. That's a real key here this game and Halifax got absolutely obliterated. This could have easily been a 6-1 game if it hadn't been for all those power plays for Halifax early on. The Raiders were shelled and dwarfed in shots every single period, unable to keep up with the well-balanced Kelowna team known for its' up tempo style. They couldn't break through their defense and lacked the opportunity to get momentum going other than some lucky bounces here and there. After Yanovich scored early in the second period for the Knights, they pulled Hocolate in favor of Georgette Pel who had a solid performance throughout the rest of the game. Perhaps they should have started her instead of Hocolate this game as he seemed quite worn out if anything. A bad game by the Halifax Raiders and a splendid performance by most of the Kelowna squad getting the job done in impressive fashion.

PIETRA VOLKOVA INTERVIEW
(scrub)

Here we have an interview with the 4th overall SMJHL Draftee Pietra Volkova, who has been playing for the Halifax Raiders in her first season. She is not off to the greatest start and many more expected a lot from the Russian native. With only one goal to her name and below average production, fans have questioned her actual ability. Perhaps she was too big of a reach at this point? Who knows! Laflamme pointed out her low shooting percentage and believes that the Russian sniper will get producing soon enough and will be a big contributing factor come playoff time. With the Raiders having an amazing defensive corps, they are looking for their young forwards to finally produce.
Quote:
1: How did it feel when Kasparek scored on you given the wager you two have?

"Bittersweet. Proud of him for scoring, I guess. Really would have liked it to not be on my team. Especially after being down 4-2 already. I picked up point though, scoring race gap still not too wide."

2: Did you expect Kelowna to explode right after Halifax got a 2-1 lead?
"I didn't think they were done, but... Definitely didn't expect them to go all out the way they did. Difficult to know that you let game get away from you."

3: What are your thoughts on how Halifax has performed as a whole this season?
"I think we didn't have greatest start, but I think we're starting to turn it around. Is just a matter of finding right lines, making chemistry. We needed time - a lot of rookies on the team."

4: People claim that you are a bust given your production, do you believe things will turn around for your SMJHL career?

"I think people are impatient. I already started scoring. Not going to stop now that I'm here, I promise. Only way to go from here is up."

MVP

DIETER DOMINIQUE
1G 1A

Many expected first star Blake Battle to be the MVP here but we decided to go with Dieter since his team came out victorious. Don't get me wrong, Blake contributing to all of his team's offense this game was definitely stellar but Dominique has been more than just a leader for the Knights. So far taking over the goal scoring race by potting his 6th goal of the season, all stemming from his strong defensive play. Many definitely consider him one of the better two-way players in the league but he has done quite a bit for himself and the team by being a spark plug. Solid outing in the dot and constantly pressuring the Raiders by keeping them in their own zone and stripping several of their players of the puck. Many are buzzing about Dominique and this definitely isn't the final time we have heard his name. </div>

(Game #25)Detroit Falcons Falcons 2 @ St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows 7

St. Louis, MO. - The Detroit Falcons came into the Scottrade Center looking to knock off the division leading Scarecrows, fresh off of a 6-4 win against Prince George the day before. The Scarecrows however, weren't having any of it. Still reeling a bit from a 3-2 loss to Kelowna a night earlier, the Scarecrows started out hot and fast in front of a sold out crowd, scoring 18 seconds into the game. Lets go to the play by play for this first goal:

Quote:"And here we go in St. Louis. Feist wins the opening faceoff back to Targaryen and this game is underway. Targaryen pushes the puck up ice and brings it in over the line. He settles it down and slides it across to his defensive partner Foster. Foster sends it back to Targaryen, who slides it across the ice to the winger Kurczewski. Kurczewski is down by the half-wall and sends it to Foster at the point, Foster sends it right back to Kurczewski who one times it on net, HE SCORESSSSSSSS! JOE KURCZEWSKI LET IT RIP FROM THE RIGHT FACEOFF CIRCLE AND HE BEATS ANDERSON HIGH GLOVE 18 SECONDS INTO THE GAME!. 1-0 SCARECROWS!!"

Kurczewski gets his third of the season, assisted by Foster and Targaryen, and it would only be the beginning of a long night for Detroit as Akeson would strike for St. Louis about 3 and a half minutes later.

Quote:"Celej with the puck and he'll dump it down the ice so the crows can get a line change. Edvins Berzins back to pick up the puck and he passes it down the ice to Hans Moleman. Moleman looking to pass and its intercepted by DarryL Landry in the Detroit zone. Landry drops the puck back to Rivet, who sends it quickly across to Erichsen who takes a shot and it goes wide, rebound in front- THEY SCORE! I didn't see who it was right away but the puck ricocheted back out front from behind the net and it looks like Nate Akeson fired it home right away. Yes, it was Akeson, 2-0 St. Louis only 3:51 into the first period.

Nate Akeson continues his wonderful start to the season, notching his third goal, with assists from Erichsen and Rivet. The Scarecrows were not done in the first period either. With LeClerc off in the box for cross checking, the power play was going to get in on the fun.

Quote:So we'll have a faceoff in the Detroit zone here as the St. Louis power play is winding down. Feist takes the draw and wins it to Kurczewski along the boards. Kurczewski takes a step towards the net and fires a shot THEY SCORE! THE SHOT WAS DEFLECTED THROUGH THE FIVE HOLE OF JEREMY ANDERSON, BY FEIST THE SCARECROWS STRIKE ON THE POWER PLAY, 3-0!

St. Louis' third goal was by it's third different player to score his third goal of the season, as Feist gets his third on the power play with the assist from Kurczewski. The wild first period wasn't done yet, as Detroit finally got on the board with a goal of their own:

Quote:"Zjang has the puck along the boards, and gets hit hard by Rivet and loses the puck. It's picked up by the Falcons' Kaspars Berzins who takes a quick shot that's blocked by Landry. The puck ends up on the stick of Leclerc. Leclerc with control, slides the puck to Metzler at the point. Metzler is looking for a lane and finds Rising Hippo open for a SHOT, THEY SCORE. It was Berzins crashing the net who deflected the Hippo shot, it beats Wahlgren, and Detroit makes the score 3-1 12:09 into the first period.

That's how the first period would finish up, St. Louis 3, Detroit 1. As we moved onto the second period, Detroit was putting the pressure on early in the period but couldn't solve Wahlgren. We got our first goal in the period from another person getting their third goal of the season, Frans Erichsen:

Quote:Detroit dumps the puck into the St. Louis zone, and Akeson is back to get it. Akeson sends a pass up to Erichsen in the neutral zone. Erichsen taps the puck over to Reine who takes into the Detroit zone, 2 on 1 with Erichsen. Reine fakes his shot and freezes the defenseman, slides it over to Erichsen HE SCORES! Frans Erichsen on the one timer from Geoff Reine converts the 2 on 1 and Its 4-1 Scarecrows!

And it was with that that the Falcons' coaching staff pulled Jeremy Anderson, likely to try to light a fire under the team who was still playing quite flat. Sivy McSieve is now between the pipes, but 3 minutes later, he'd be ending up with the same result:

Quote:Geoff Reine holding the puck, looks to make a pass in the neutral zone, which was picked off by Alexis Metzler. Metzler tried to move the puck quickly and he turns it over to Ronnie Westbrook. Westbrook takes it over the line and sends the puck over to Taylor Stach. Stach takes a quick shot the sails over the net, and kicks back out in front right to Reine and HE BURIES IT. REINE FOUND HIMSELF IN THE RIGHT SPOT AND TAPS HOME THE EASY REBOUND OFF THE BACK WALL. 5-1 St. Louis!

Reine's first of the season off the rebound gave St. Louis a 4 goal lead in the second period, and it seemed to take away whatever spark the Falcons had left. The second period wasn't done yet as Detroit managed to get on the board again in the final minute.

Quote:"Less than a minute to go in the period. Zjang taking the faceoff in the Scarecrows zone. He wins it back to PDJ at the point who takes a quick shot and its wide, but THEY SCORE! Sinikka charged the net and found a rebound of his own off the back wall and Detroit cuts into the St. Louis lead, making it 5-2 with 45 seconds left in the second period.

The second period would end that way, with the Scarecrows leading 5-2. It was a slow start to the third period for both teams, until finally Dos Diablo would put one home:

Quote:Edvins Berzins with the puck in the neutral zone, holding it, and gets hit by Foster. Rivet picks up the puck as the Scarecrows go the other way 3 on 1. Rivet drops it to Foster at the point who sends a quick pass over to Stach. Stach the shot, big save by McSieve. The rebound ends up on the stick of Rivet again, Rivet looks to the slot and sends a pass to Diablo AND HE SCORES! Dos Diablo gets his second of the season with a top shelf rocket on the pass from Rivet.

The 6-2 St. Louis lead would last for about 3 more minutes when Jason Visser would close the scoring:

Quote:Here's Rivet now bringing the puck into the zone. He slides a pass over to Cirocco, who quickly sends it to Landry. Landry winds up and takes the shot, blocked by Metzler. The puck goes right to Cirocco who takes a shot of his own and that one's blocked by Leclerc! The puck ends up on the tape of Visser and he puts it home! Jason Visser makes the game 7-2 and any remaining Detroit fans have headed for the exits.

And that's how the game would end. Lets delve into the numbers:

Shots
STL: 33
DET: 22

Hits
STL: 20
DET: 16

Faceoffs
STL: 44
DET: 34

Blocked Shots
STL: 8
DET: 12

Penalty Minutes
STL: 6
DET:12

What the stats show us is what you could've figured out from the 7-2 final score. STL won most of the stats that you want to win in most games. Detroit's penalties could've hurt them more, but St. Louis was only 1/5 on the PP. St. Louis had goals from 7 different scorers.

Three Stars
1. Scarecrows Joe Kurczewski (1g, 1a)
2. Scarecrows Nate Akeson (1g, 1a)

Game 29 --

Second period fireworks lead Whalers to 4-2 win

VANCOUVER -- While it was hard to discern one team from the other in the early goings of this contest, it was the middle-period that sealed the deal for the Vancouver Whalers in a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Falcons.

Fireworks erupted early on with Ieuan Llewellyn and Alex Derin duking it out. Vancouver was then assessed the only penalties of the period. The fans were livid, as per usual, despite the legitimacy of the calls.

In the second period, things go started early. Detroit still held the man advantage off a holding minor called on Carl Farris to end the first. Just as Farris exited the box, the Falcons hunkered down in the offensive zone. A shot by Alexander Odegaard missed the net, riccocheted off the boards and landed on the opposite side for a quick wrister from Alex Kepka. Popping the bottle off the roof of the net, Kepka made the score 1-0 in favor of the Falcons.

Not long afterward, Viktor Nerokov finished a string of possession success for the Falcons as well. With the puck seeming to find anything but the net, the Falcons calmed things down at the point for a moment before starting a strong cycling play that allowed Nerokov to rush in behind the defenders and strike with a tap in goal.

With the noise dwindling, it was up to the Whalers to respond and get the fans back into things.

They did in full force. Just over a minute after the Nerokov goal, Connor MacDonald received a pass up the left side from Ace Redding. He held strong with the puck against the boards, made a stutter-step move to lose the defender and rifled a shot short side past Jeremy Anderson.

Bynjar Tusk, the second overall selection, continued the comeback after finishing on a good play in the offensive zone. Theodore Graham carried into the offensive zone up the wing, dropped it off to OG Bobby while drawing the defense out. With Bobby and Tusk on a 2-on-1, the defender misplayed and dropped to a knee, allowing Bobby to lift the puck past him and Tusk to finish with a stunning one-timer.

Given about eight minutes more in the period, and Vancouver was back to the heavy offensive. A defensive face-off win was given up to Ace Redding, who made the mad rush to the offensive zone. He broke in, made a toe drag around the defender, and swung a shot quickly into the net to make it 3-2 for Vancouver.

They would never give up the lead from then onward.

A give and go play just over a minute later by Connor MacDonald and OG Bobby up the side and into the zone led to the final goal of the game. Bobby fired it off Jari Sinikka, attempting to protect his already battered goaltender. However, the rebound off the block was found by Bobby and the puck was banged in on a misplay.

Sivy McSieve was then put into the game, and would maintain a shutout for the Falcons, who were unable to mount a comeback.

Throughout the contest, ice time was limited at times. The Detroit Falcons only managed to play their top line for 13:50, while their second and third lines would both pass that mark.

Likewise, the top defensive pairing barely outpaced their compatriots and the third pairing was featured a lot more often. Detroit may need to look to endurance training and cardio soon.

Ace Redding was named the first star with his two points -- especially the one-man coast-to-coast effort -- and four hits. While the goaltenders were unnamed in the tallying of great performances despite a spectacular 23 saves on 25 shots by Maximillian Wehner to make him 4-0-0, and McSieves 11-for-11 shutout in his 23 minutes on ice.

Brief Synopsis
</div>

Similar to their game a few days prior against the Kelowna Knights. The Vancouver Whalers took a game to the last moments. Winning on a spectacular shootout goal by Patrick Kilgore. Both teams scored a goal at opposing ends of regulation. Olson Stuart of the Whalers and Frederick Boone of the Firebirds scored their goals within the first five minutes of their respective periods. The goaltending duel took center stage as rookie goaltender Ben Waters shrugged off shot after shot on a busy night. Whalers goaltender Triforce Link seemed to have a fairly relaxed game only facing 17 shots in total.

Game Summary
</div>

Entering this, the 30th season of the SMJHL, prying eyes had focused on the Vancouver Whalers. Retaining many pieces of their championship losing team from season 29; the pressure had been placed squarely on their backs. To return and claim the trophy this time. The opposite was expected of the Prince George Firebirds. Many thought that the Firebirds lineup was much too soft to compete in any way with the big boys of the SMJHL. Coming into Game 44 of the SMJHL season. The Firebirds have begun to shake that stigma. Playing hot and showing the talent of young players like Ben Waters, Eduard Selich, Johnny Pollak and Sven Wolf. The Firebirds have shown a steeled resilience after a rough opening to the season. The game with the Whalers would prove a solid test for the young Firebirds. Coming into Vancouver, both teams riding a solid streak. Someone would leave unhappy this evening.

The first period started out with a bang for the Whalers as Rookie forward Olson Stuart drove a puck to the center of the ice and backhanded it into the top corner over the outstreched reach of rookie goaltender Ben Waters. This seemed to wake up the young keeper who has impressed this season. Stopping all pucks thrown his way the entirety for regulation from that point forward. Waters was tested often as he struggled against many pucks tossed his way by the Vancouver attackers. Waters stood tall and didn't budge, not letting a single puck even close to the back of the net.

Whaler keep Triforce Link had a much easier night. Facing only 17 shots on this evening, While dealing with a much lighter workload, Link still surrendered a goal early in the second to Firebirds center Frederick Boone. Boone redirected a beautiful pass from the charging Barak Obrana. Beating Link through the legs.

Earning his team a point with his spectacular play, Ben Waters entered the shootout confidently. But this confidence would soon falter as he let in a beautiful shot by Conklin Owen. Winger Eduard Selich then tried valiantly to keep the game going with a highlight worthy snipe but the dreams of the Firebirds were dashed and their hearts broken as 4th line center Patrick Kilgore took the puck from center ice and buried it behind goaltender Waters to give the Whalers a final goal and a 2-1 win.

Post-Game Interviews with Prince George's Ben Waters

Interview You played an extremely solid game today stopping 29 of the 30 shots on you earning your team a point in a very close game. Do feel let down at all by your teammates in a game like this or do these just happen?

Ben Waters: I definitely felt let down by my boys at the beginning, but at the end of the day you have to be able to tell yourself that every game is only one out of 50 and you and your teammates can always go back out there and do better the next game, and I hope to see that my team can back me up in the coming days.

Interview You have had a solid start to your rookie career in the SMJHL. Many predicted the Firebirds to struggle this season. Do you believe this team has a solid shot at the Four Stars Cup?

BW: Eh, you really can't form an opinion too quickly. As a firebird, of course I want to tell myself that we have a shot, but as a hockey fan, this could easily just be a 2014-15 senators situation, and we might not really be as good as we're showing today. We are on paper probably the worst team in the league, but I know my guys have the biggest heart in the league and are gonna put up the points when it matters.

Interview Being a goaltender is a tough job and a lot of goaltenders struggle leaving their game on the ice. What do you do to stay so grounded off the ice?

BW: You know, being so young, I really haven't been able to develop a consistent routine to keep grounded off the ice. When me or my team(or both) do well, I'm flying high for a solid couple days, and when I or my team doesn't do as well as I think we could, it definitely is hard to tell myself that it's just one game, and that the next game will be against a different group of guys, and all in all a different game.

Interview What are your goals this season with the Firebirds? Would you say Four Stars or bust? Or are you more focused on growing as a player?

BW: I think the team’s goals should be division finals. We don’t really have the team to be making a real shot, but we’ve shown that we have what it takes to be a decent playoff contender. I am definitely focused on growing as a player more than all else, because at the end of the day, I’ll be with these guys maybe 3 years max, but I’ll be in the SHL for years to come. My real objective is to have the best possible season so that an SHL team notices, and has the faith in my abilities to pick me up.</div>

Interview Thank you for taking the time to sit down with us Ben.

Here we are for the second edition of S30: A Look Back. Thanks for taking the time to tune back in, and if this is your first time, welcome! We've got an exciting game in store for you today, as the Whalers took on the reigning SMJHL champion St. Louis Scarecrows! Let's jump straight into the Game 47 match up.

If there's any two teams in the league who came into this year with some bad blood between them, it's the Whalers and the Scarecrows. These two duked it out last year in the Four Star Cup Final, with St. Louis knocking off the Cinderella Vancouver squad in the end to hoist the cup. With the momentum that the Whalers had carried into the series, they really thought they had a chance... but St. Louis brought bad intentions to the rink, and squashed the feel good story of the 7th seed.

This is the second game between these two teams, the first was a 4-0 beat down of the home town Whalers at the Scarecrows' hands. For St. Louis to come into our house and win in such a convincing manner was a real disappointment. But, this second match up was in the St. Louis arena, so perhaps some pressure of playing at home would be off the Whalers' shoulders. The biggest change came by way of who we saw in net, with Triforce Link playing in game 47, to Wehner starting back in game 36. This week, the tables were turned...

Redding's prowess on the forecheck created an opportunity for Jon Ross to put his Whalers ahead</center>
It didn't take long for Vancouver to jump out to a lead in this game, with Jon Ross notching a goal within the first 3 minutes. The Whaler's top line was able to take advantage of the #2 Forward line, exherting their physicality on the fore check to produce the goal. It was Ace Redding doing the heavy lifting, checking St. Louis' Willy Mack. After knocking the puck loose with a jarring hit, it was Redding who put the puck on Ross' stick, who made quick work of the opportunity to make it 1-0.

Corey Bearss notched his 3rd of the season to put Vancouver up 2-0 on a break away</center>
Just under 3 minutes after surrendering their first goal of the contest, St. Louis were caught napping during a line change. Top D man Kelly Rivet dumped the puck in for a change, but the Scarecrows' top line was slow getting over the boards... Carl Ferris, a sophomore SMJHL player, saw the situation and took advantage, a long pass to Bearss in the neutral zone, and Corey was in on goal, 1 v 1 against Rookie goal tender Kyle Wahlgren. This time it was Bearss who won the moment, using a pretty move to get Wahgren committed, before sliding it past him.

The second period came and went without any highlights, despite both teams having 1 opportunity on the power play. Neither side could get anything going, and we entered the 3rd period with the 2-0 score line holding steady. As they say in hockey, it's the worst lead to have... but that was about to change-

Goal Period 3 5:01 Goal by MTL Goal
<center>[Image: 900.gif]
Conklin Owen continues to produce this year, netting for the 5th time in 12 games</center>
A Danny Foster high sticking penalty put the Whalers on the power play for the second time in the game. Their first opportunity yielded nothing, so they were eager to get another shot... but there was nothing doing a minute and fifteen seconds into the power play. Frustrated, the puck was dumped into the STL zone, in order to get the top PP line out on the ice. St. Louis were able to get their puck out of the zone, but a nifty interception by Theodore Graham followed by a pass to Jon Ross had the puck back inside the blue line in short order. Slow to recover, the Scarecrows were unable to find and cover an open Conklin Owen, who was up to the task of scoring once the puck was elegantly placed upon his stick by Ross. The 3-0 lead in the 3rd put the Whalers comfortably ahead.

Period 3, 17:31 Goal by MTL
<center>[Image: 1Northeastern.gif]
A late gasp of life came via Dos Diablo, but that was all the Scarecrows could muster against vet goal tender Triforce Link</center>
With the big league after the Owen goal, Vancouver was content to sit back and defend their lead, knowing with their Defensive pairings, any come back would be a difficult road. They proved to be mostly effective, save for this late consolation goal by Dos Diablo. The goal came off 3 consecutive shots by Dos, with the first 2 being blocked by Vancouver's Brynjar Tusk. Dos collected the puck a third time and skated in on goal, able to beat Link, who was somewhat out of position due to the first 2 blocked shots.

That proved to be all that the Scarecrows had to give on this particular night, and thus, the score ended in favor of the Whalers in the Scarecrows arena. Revenge is a dish best served cold, on away ice...

Stats

Shots
St. Louis Scarecrows: 15
Vancouver Whalers: 28

Vancouver's defensive corps was as solid as a team can be in this contest. Giving up only 15 shots, you'd love to see your goal tender secure a shut out win... but having a team play from behind for an entire game can make that difficult, especially late, when the lone goal was surrendered.

The offensive game of Vancouver has been on the up swing as of late, a needed change from early in the year. The Whalers made good on their opportunities as well, scoring on over 10% of their chances.

Hits
St. Louis Scarecrows: 19
Vancouver Whalers: 21

Ace Redding (7) and Theodore Graham (5) combined for more than half of Vancouver's hits in this contest, with a goal coming as a direct result of one of Redding's first period hits. Being able to bring physicality to both the fore check and the blue line is important to the continued success of Vancouver.

Faceoffs
St. Louis Scarecrows: 40
Vancouver Whalers: 34

Vancouver were only able to win 46% of the faceoffs in this contest, but were not worse for wear as a result. Top C Jon Ross won 13 of 28 (46%) of his faceoffs, a number the Whalers would undoubtedly like to see climb. But, if they keep scoring and playing D, face offs will be a secondary stat for them.

Saves
Kyle Wahlgren (STL): 25/28 (.893)
Triforce Link (VAN): 14/25 (.933)

Link improved his record to 4-2 on the year, with another solid performance. He certainly had the easier night of the two, seeing only one power play opportunity against him. If not for surrendering a late goal which was a bit fluky, this would have been a perfect game defensively for the team a a whole.

Special Teams
PIM:
St. Louis Scarecrows: 4
Vancouver Whalers: 2

PP %-
St. Louis Scarecrows: 0%
Vancouver Whalers: 50%

In a very disciplined display, the Whalers were only short handed once, as a result of a Conklin Owen penalty in the 2nd period. Nothing came of it, and Conklin redeemed himself by scoring on the Whalers second opportunity of the night. Winning the ST battle will be key over the course of the year for Vancouver. They must have more games like this.

3 Stars
1. Ace Redding: 1 A, 7 Hits, 1 SB
2. Theodore Graham: 1 A, 5 Hits, 1 SB
3. Triforce Link: 25/28 (.893) (4-2)

The 3 stars tonight reflect the physical, suffocating play displayed by the Whalers tonight. They were hitting on both ends of the ice, getting in the way of shots, and making it easy on their teammates. What's more impressive is their physical players are also putting up points, assisting their top line skill players in giving them the lead. Link benefited greatly from solid play by his skaters, but was not absent of a stellar game himself, improving his record to 4-2 as the Whalers have climbed the standings.

<div align="center">Season 30, Game 6
ScarecrowsSt. Louis Scarecrows @ Detroit Falcons Falcons
Final score: 5-3 Scarecrows</div>

The Setup
Hello, one and all! Welcome to an exciting installment of SMJHL Today. Season 30 is finally upon us after what seemed like an endless offseason. The Saint Louis Scarecrows emerged victorious at the end of the season 29 playoffs, attaining the incredible honor of hoisting the Four Star Cup. The Detroit Falcons were absolutely nowhere near the podium, having been outed early in the playoffs.

But then the historic S30 SMJHL Entry Draft rolled upon us, and I'm not sure any of the SMJHL analysts were expecting the sheer volume of prospects, much less the amazing work ethic that has come from them thus far. In today's game recap, we'll be looking at an impressive offansive showing from both clubs. In the end, it was St Louis who managed to pull off the victory, albeit in atypical fashion.

Keys to the Game
Let's take a look at the Keys to the Game for each side, brought to you today by Velveeta Cheese--the brand you can trust to make edible, possibly dairy products semiconsistently:

Scarecrows Scarecrows
1. Own the special teams battle. Especially early in the year like this, it's important for the penalty kill AND powerplay to be a cohesive unit that ties together the bouts at even strength. St Louis thrived on the PP last season, so look for it to be in good form.
2. Clip the fast Falcons wings. The Falcons' first line is rather devastating on paper, with the likes of Hans Moleman and Alex Berkis surging up the wings on a consistent basis. Hopefully the Crows back end is ready for that.
3. Build a freakin' Wahl. Rookie tendie for the Crows Kyle Wahlgren has been put in an unthinkable position as far as defending champiions' lineups are concerned: he's a consistent starter as a true rookie. With the depth in this year's draft, he can't afford to take a while in developing his sea legs.

Falcons Falcons
1. Win the hits battle. Crows enforcer Danny Foster has made it clear to the rest of the league that he's going for broke this season--literally--by attempting to take the hits record from Steve French. Rising Hippo, the seasoned power forward for Detroit, has something to say about that. So let's see who wins out.
2. Get help from depth. Although the first line for Detroit is formidable, St Louis has weapons across all lines, including their great rookies. It's up for the rest of the team to step up, especially since their greatest offensive firepower in Maximus Sarone has moved on to the big leagues.
3. Stay out of the box. The penalty kill was a sizable issue for Detroit last year. Combine that with the Scarecrows great special teams, and this could get out of hand quickly. Detroit has to play smart hockey to keep it close.

Some Highlights
Let's show you two different plays from tonight's game. Although it was a scoring fest, it wasn't so much the prowess of the forwards shooting as two rookie goalies attempting to make the best of a bad situation. With mostly young players on the ice, just a few games into their rookie seasons, you can chalk up the majority of the 8 goals to lapses in communication!

As the first period was winding down, Detroit was up, 2-1. Rising Hippo was sent to the box for interfering with Wahlgren on a rough screen play. Almost on queue--and as if the Crows had read our Keys to the Game ahead of time-- the St Louis powerplay unit stepped up:

"Toohoots takes the faceoff for Detroit as play resumes. That was a dumb penalty by Hippo, frankly; that shot wasn't getting to the net. Toohoots gets the puck to Hans Moleman who finds a lane to clear it down the ice. One minute to go in this first period, 2-1 Falcons. Here comes Targaryen with the puck ... he hurls it to center ice where Feist is waiting for it. Feist ... waiting for Targaryen to catch up with the play - gives it off to Targaryen as he crosses the blue line. Fires a SHOT and it misses wide! Feist grabs the puck around the back, he FIRES! ...REBOUND! TARGARYEN ... Goal Goal Goal SCOOOOOORES!!! The powerplay unit is back in action and we're tied at 2!!"

Another theme of this game was the physicality, although it seemed that only one person was being targeted by the referees the entire game: Danny Foster. Say what you want about his aggressive style of play, but it seemed odd that of all the people throwing hits, Foster was sent to the box ... FOUR times. He had a few things to say to the linesman after a call just five seconds into the 3rd period:

"A hard fought second and we're back for the last 20 minutes. Willy Mack takes the draw against Toohoots ... and Mack wins it. Back to Danny Foster, what a rough game he's had today, no pun intended! Foster looks for the pass up ice and it's picked off by Daniel James. Foster gives him a nudge and ... wait, that's a penalty! Foster's called for hooking just five seconds in!

"Here come some choice words from Foster for the linesman who called that. That's the FOURTH minor for Danny today, and I gotta say at least two of those weren't the best calls. As an observer and fan of the league you gotta think that the "Hit List" that Foster promised is a little motivation for the ref to be harder on him tonight."

After all that was said and done, the Scarecrows were still perfect on the penalty kill and scored one on the powerplay. The two goals in the third, scored by two rookies on this rookie-filled defending Cup champion squad, ended up being the difference. In a hard fought match such as this one, though, both teams should go home with their heads held high.

Final Score
Scarecrows - 5
Falcons - 3

Key Perfomances
 • Polarizing player Viktor Nerokov did manage a goal, but was 3/11 from the faceoff circle in 16 minutes of TOI.
 • Kelly Rivet certainly earned 3rd star of the night, with one assist and a +3 rating; he also had 2 shot blocks
 • Jason Visser and Ronnie Westbrook, two low-draft rookies, managed great nights in the faceoff category, going 8/11 and 5/10 respectively.

I was going to call you a homer for your inability to award a star to any Mammoth in a tight 2-1 game, but when I went to check the game stats I noticed, "Hey, there's no link to the game." And while that's a minor inconvenience, there's actually no mention of which game this actually might be.

C'mon, I know you're a Firebirds, but you're better than that.

So many of these PGS are great, but you deserve special recognition for some top shelf graphics. Not only is your write-up game very strong, but I really appreciated the team-consistent gifs and the perfect logo work on the stills.

Thanks man! I try extremely hard to find junior teams that match the names/logos of the teams. If I can't find that I usually default to an NHL team with similar colors. I feel like my writeups could be longer but I know keeping it concise and easy to look at makes for an eyecatching experience.

Always nice to be recognized. Thanks a lot for letting me know. I will continue doing my best to pump out the best PGS I can!

There is so much talent on these boards.

I awarded the three stars based upon what the game said and made write ups. It was the engine not me. Although I do appreciate the feedback and I'll remember to include a link in my next game Smile

Glad I could clear anything up, and cheers!
