Alright it’s time to look at the season 8 draftees and how they performed in their rookie seasons. Obviously these rankings are pre-mature and there is still a lot of hockey to be played in these young kids careers, but lets take a look at what would happen if we were to re-draft again this season. We combined mainly their rookie stats, with their potential and work ethic to get better to make these rankings.

20. Toronto North Stars (compensatory pick) - D Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko managed a very low 7 points in 50 games. His work ethic is too low and his potential is tiny. No one expects anything from this player. He did score 7 points which is more then some of the lower players however.

19. Calgary Dragons (via Las Vegas Kings, via Minnesota Chiefs from Calgary Dragons) - C Quinton Johnso

Quinto Johnso was a pretty good scorer in his first season, scoring 16 points in 50 games. He isn’t expected to do much better then that however. His potential is low and no one expects him to improve by much.

18. Winnipeg Jets - D Dennis Seidenburg

The quiet defenseman for the Winnipeg Jets who just re-signed with the team for a few more seasons, plays a depth role for the team. He had very solid numbers for a defenseman in his first season, but his work ethic is just too low to give him a good position on this ranking. If he were to improve his work ethic, he would be a first rounder.

17. Minnesota Chiefs (via Manhattan Rage) - LW Blake Laflamme

Blake Laflamme put up a mediocre 9 points in 50 games for the Minnesota Chiefs. He only played an average of 13 minutes per game and wasn’t really counted on to produce too much offense. His future could be bright though if he continues to work hard to become better.

16. Hamilton Steelhawks (via West Kendall Platoon from Toronto North Stars) - RW Patrick Walsh

The first of the 2 NWJHL players, Patrick Walsh played half the season in the NWJHL for the Prince George Firebirds. He was one of the leaders of the entire league in scoring, until he was traded from Hamilton to Winnipeg, who gave him a shot in the SHL. Walsh has been quiet in the SHL compared to the NWJHL, however he has the potential to be better. Hopefuly for the Jets he will start to work harder and build himself to become one of the Winnipeg reliable scorers.

15. West Kendall Platoon (via Calgary Dragons) - C Jordan Hall

Jordan Hall falls near the end of the second round despite being drafted very low. Many were not sure how Hall would fair in the SHL and if he would even last or just disappear. Well Hall has been one of the hardest working rookies in the SHL so far, since being traded to the Winnipeg Jets. Hall is playing wing now, on the 2nd line for the Jets and has hopes to reach much greater stats then his rookie season.

14. Toronto North Stars (via Manhattan Rage from Minnesota Chiefs) - LW Christopher Raymond

The Toronto North Star prospect lands here for his excellent play in the minor league this season. He lead the Detroit Falcons all the way to the 4 star cup finals. He was amongst the best scorers in the entire NWJHL and has really showed a lot of promise to become a real threat in the SHL. His potential is all we have to build off of now however, but his name could climb these rankings once the North Stars decide to bring him up.

13. Hamilton Steelhawks (via Los Angeles Panthers) - C Yousuf Scherbluk

Yousuf Scherbluck was drafted late due to his age, but he has performed as hoped for. He managed 9 points in 50 games which is not great, but it was enough to get the Toronto North Stars interested in trading for him. He will be on the 3rd line with a chance at the 2nd this season in Toronto, they are building him up to be good in the future, and if he continues to work hard, he will get there one day.

12. :comets: Edmonton Comets - LW Antero Salmelainen

Maybe there are some shocked to see the 1st overall pick to show up this early, but its true that he has not performed to the quality that the Edmonton Comets hoped for. When they drafted him 1st overall, he was already talking about the Platoon, so they traded him to West Kendall after just 2 games. Salmelainen played on the presidents trophy winning team and averaged just 10 minutes per game. He put 9 points in 50 games, and has slacked on his training. Antero will get a better opportunity to shine in his future, but for now we wonder if he was rightfully the 1st overall pick of the draft.

11. :comets: Edmonton Comets (via West Kendall Platoon) - RW Danglee Ciddz

He falls right out of the 1st round with his 15 points in 50 games. Those numbers are amongst the top 10 in the league for all rookies, so he did not disappoint the Edmonton Comets. However he was still traded away in the off-season to Los Angeles.

10. West Kendall Platoon (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - D Richard Metcalf-Kearns

The Rage defenseman who has quietly improved over the course of the season has put up decent numbers all season long, and they are good enough to get him in the 1st round. Kearns was traded from West Kendall after 35 games, and has landed on the re-building Rage where he has a more valued role. Kearns managed 73 hits which is 2nd out of this draft and 44 shot blocks which is out of the top 3. He also had 41 take aways which is the highest of all rookies. Kearns is a huge part of the re-build in Manhattan, however he needs to work harder to maintain this pace.

9. West Kendall Platoon (via Toronto North Stars) - C Chris McZehrl

The 2nd guy to enter the 1st round is Chris McZerhl. Chris didn’t have a great rookie season, only managing 7 points in 50 games. However he was traded from West Kendall to Los Angeles, and has been working extremely hard in Los Angeles. His dedication even earned him a questioned all-star spot and has now started his sophomore season on the 1st line and has already reached just under his total production in 4 games! McZerhls potential is very high and it is 99% sure that he will surpass his quiet rookie season totals and by a large margin.

8. :comets: Edmonton Comets (via Minnesota Chiefs) - LW Jordan McArthur

The Edmonton Comets traded away this stud center, but the Manhattan Rage are very grateful to have such a great prospect. His rookie season was a good one, one of the higher scorers of all the rookies with 17 points in 51 games. Jordan McArthur is a huge part of the Rage rebuild and the expectations for him to one day become their start center man are very high.

7. West Kendall Platoon (via Edmonton Comets from Toronto North Stars) - D Jaroslav Sekeras

Jaroslav Sekeras was the monster of this draft class, and basically one of the monsters of the league. He lead the entire league in penalty minutes, he was the rookie leader in hits with 82, he had the most blocked shots of all rookies with 62. He was however a -6 on the best team in the league, and his 194 PIMs were not always a great thing to have. Sekeras’ potential has dropped since he was drafted, he is not as hard of a worker as some of the other members of this list, despite arguably being the best rookie defenseman in his own zone, his future does not look as bright as the others higher then him.

6. Minnesota Chiefs - D Niclas Wastlund
Im sure many people are shocked to see the big Minnesota Chiefs defenseman ranked outside the top 5, but the fact of the matter is his play was not as strong as the 5 above him. Wastlund played a great season, and was definitely one of the big reasons for the Chiefs doing so well in the regular season. He managed 17 points which is the most offense from any defenseman in this draft, he had 54 hits and 38 shot blocks which were god but put him outside the top 4 in both, and he had a pretty average TA ratting of 23. He played an average of 20 minutes per game and managed a +10 on a team with mainly plusses. His potential is as high as anyone on this list however, and a re-rank in a couple of seasons could see him as high as number one, if he continues to work hard.

5. West Kendall Platoon (via Hamilton Steelhawks from Las Vegas Kings) - RW Benjamin Wong

Benjamin Wong was the 3rd highest scorer of all rookies, he finished with 25 points in 50 games for the West Kendall Platoon who he was part of all the way until the Challenge cup finals where he came just short of winning the cup. Wong only averaged 15 minutes per game and still put up very good numbers for a rookie. He is now in Toronto where he will see first line duties and we all expect his production to increase drastically.

4. :comets: Edmonton Comets (via Manhattan Rage) - D Cole Reinhart

Cole Reinhart ranks 4th on the list because of his great defensive numbers, despite being on the Edmonton Comets who finished last in the West. He managed 40 shot blocks which is 2nd out of all rookie defenseman, he had 63 hits tied for 3rd out of all rookies, and had 34 take aways which is 2nd of all rookies. He played an average of 21 minutes per game and had a -4 ratting on a minus filled Edmonton Comets. Reinhart will be a big part of the Comets run this season, he needs to repeat these numbers and continue to improve as well.

3. Hamilton Steelhawks (via Los Angeles Panthers) - D Darian Scherbluk

Darian Scherbluk may be a surprise pick at the number 3 spot, but the truth is he really deserves to make it here. Darian has managed a very decent 48 blocked shots which is good for 2nd amongst rookies. He also finished with 63 hits which is tied for 3rd and 28 take aways which is good for 3rd of all rookies. He was a +2 on a team that was mainly negative and failed to make the playoffs playing the most average minutes per game of any rookie defenders at 22 minutes. His potential is unlimited and the Steelhawks have big plans for this kid.

2. :comets: Edmonton Comets (via Hamilton Steelhawks from West Kendall Platoon) - C Sam Slade

Sam Slade ranks 2nd on the list, exactly where he was drafted last season. The Edmonton Comets got a great pick out of this guy, he managed 30 points in 50 games good for 2nd in the league amongst rookies. Slade has now taken a bigger role in Edmonton with the trading of Nick Fisher, Slade will be a shoe in for one of the top 2 lines.

1. Hamilton Steelhawks (via Edmonton Comets, via West Kendall Platoon from Las Vegas Kings) - C Joe McKeil

If we were to re-draft today for there rookie seasons, the first overall pick of the Season 8 draft would be the Hamilton Steelhawks’ Joe McKeil. McKeil won the calder trophy for the rookie of the year, and did so by getting a league high amongst rookies, 40 points in 50 games. That’s good for a .80 point per game, which is near some of the best in the entire history of rookies since the SHL started.

19. :kings: Las Vegas Kings (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - RW Kane Smith-Pelly

Smith Pelly did manage a pretty good 18 points in 50 games, but he was not happy with his playing time in Toronto and retired. He was no more use then 18 points in his career.


11. Hamilton Steelhawks (via West Kendall Platoon from Edmonton Comets) - LW Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli did not play an entire season with the Steelhawks, but he felt he was not happy with the team and decided to retire away from them. Balotelli will return to Manchester City and continue to try and crack there starting squad.


7. Calgary Dragons - D Jack Nero

The Dragons Jack Nero who was selected 7th overall, spent the most of the season in the NWJHL and has become one of the more hated players in the league. His career will never be the same, and he has shown everyone he will never live up to expectations.

A re-draft shouldn't be all stats. If I was to draft a player I would draft based on activity due to the fact that they can get better.

Wastlund has the most TPE out of any rookie that season, and will have the most going into next season.

A re-draft shouldn't be all stats. If I was to draft a player I would draft based on activity due to the fact that they can get better.

Wastlund has the most TPE out of any rookie that season, and will have the most going into next season.
