S31 SMJHL Awards Ceremony
#16

The Ron Bolt Trophy is awarded to the Most Sportsmanlike Player as voted by the General Managers from across the SMJHL. Named after its’ very first recipient, this trophy rewards the player judged to be honorable in his victories as well as gracious in defeat. The recipient has also demonstrated an ability to play the game cleanly and effectively putting up low amounts of penalties on top of a high amount of points. The nominees for the Ron Bolt Trophy are:

Alex Light Knights
Light put up an amazing season where he amassed 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points. His +17 and his 18 minutes of penalty demonstrate a clean game axed towards the offense.

Geronimo Otto Knights
Otto followed up a solid rookie season with a strong sophomore season where he put up 16 goals and 32 assists for 48 points to finish 3rd in overall scoring, being beaten only by two of his teammates in that category. His +15 and 6 minutes of penalty put him near the top for a forward.

Jon Ross Whalers
Ross led the Whalers to the 2nd best overall record in the SMJHL with his 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points. Playing both ends of the ice and on the special teams, he finished his Regular Season with a plus/minus of +11 and with an incredibly small 2 minutes of penalty, the 2nd best total in the top 60 scorers in the league.

Our next trophy is the Zach Miller Trophy, an award given to the Most Dedicated Player as voted by the General Managers of every team. Funnily enough, Zach Miller never won the trophy named after him but his dedication night in, night out both on and off the ice over the course of his SMJHL career made him be voted as MVP by the League in Season 5. Our nominees for this trophy have all shown dedication to their craft and beyond. The nominees are:

Eduard Selich Firebirds
For everyone in the league, Eduard Selich is a staple name on the boards. On top of posting solid numbers for his team, as evidenced by his 21 goals, and 20 assists this season, he led the Firebirds as their team captain. Beyond the confines of the rink, he became an updater and a banker as well as helping his team out for the draft.

Matthew Leetch Mammoths
Matthew Leetch was a key component to the Colorado Mammoths all season, playing an important role on the first pairing alsongside O’Dooley. Posting 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points it was his leadership as Captain of the Mammoths and his daily presence within the locker room that made him stand out from among his peers.

Reed Laing raiders
To say that Laing has had a good season is to put it mildly. On a team that was expected, by many, to become the first back-to-back winner of the Four Star Cup and filled with talented prospects, Laing stood out from the rest and led the Raiders with a 23 Goals and 21 Assists performance. Off the ice, Laing’s ability to help her teammates become better players and help them with their player builds has helped the Raiders tremendously in achieving perennial success.

Whereas the other trophies handed out tonight all honor top players for their success, some players work in their shadows and reap a lot of success as well without it being recognized. The Vyacheslav Onoprienko Trophy is the annual award given to the Most Underrated Player in the League as voted by the General Managers. Your nominees are:

Ekaterina Rudnikova Mammoths
Rudnikova has a good season as the starting goaltender of the Mammoths, finishing her season with 22 wins, 4 of the Shutouts, a league leading save percentage of 0.911 and a 2nd best 2.25 Goals Against Average. Facing a lot more shots than other goaltenders she was a rock for her team down the stretch as they finished 4th in the Overall League Standings.

Martin Svensson Mammoths
Svensson led his team in all the primary scoring columns, posting 16 Goals and 30 Assists for 46 points; good for 4th in the overall points standings in the League. Playing both ends of the ice for the Mammoths he finished with a +15 differential and was up there with the best in the League all season long, showing incredible consistency over the course of the season.

Nathan Russett Militia
Russett had a solid year, leading the Montreal Militia with 18 Goals and 20 Assists for 38 points this past season. Leading the Militia in every offensive stat as well as plus/minus (+8) on a team that many had discounted early on in the season, he was able to shine and show consistency over the course of the season in all facets of his game.

Our next award is not awarded to a player for their performance but rather to their front office for the work put in to make their team stand out from the pack. The Mathias Chouinard Award is annually awarded to the Top GM/Co-GM during the Regular Season as voted by the General Managers. To be recognized as the top GM, the team must’ve had great success on the ice and activity levels on the team were stellar. This year our nominees are:

Ej27 & Jenny Knights
Leading the Kelowna Knights to a Laurifer Trophy in Season 30, ej27 and Jenny distinguished themselves by repeating the feat in Season 31, posting a 30-13-7 record for 67 points during the regular season. Their focus on developing players from within, and patience with the lines let them stay ahead of the competition throughout the season and eventually conquer the playoffs and lift the Four Star Cup

r1c3bowl22 & Jason97 Mammoths
Managing a Colorado Mammoths team that had finished dead last in Season 30, r1c3bowl22 and Jason97 turned it around, posting a 27-20-3 record to finish 4th in the Overall League Standings. Limited offensively compared to the highest scoring teams, the Mammoths focused on their defense and finished with the least amount of goals conceded by a good margin. They were eventually reverse swept out of the playoff picture in the first round.

Vbottas17 & fever95 raiders
Last year the Halifax Raiders finished 7th in the Overall League Standings before going on a hot run in the playoffs to lift the Four Star Cup. This season their 30-16-4 record put them on top of the Eastern Conference Standings and 3rd in the Overall League Standings. Vbottas17 and fever95 managed a team that had the 2nd highest goals scored and 2nd least amount of goals conceded this season. They eventually lost in the Cup Finals.

Our next award is the Quilha Agante Trophy, an award given annually to the Top Defenseman in the league as voted by the General Managers. As many know offense wins games but defense wins championships. This award looks to honor defensive excellence on both ends of the ice. Solid in their own zone, and dangerous from the point, these players have all, deservedly been nominated for the award:

Barack Obrana Firebirds
With 6 Goals and 30 Assists on a Prince George Firebirds team that struggled throughout the season, Obrana stood out as a heavy hitting shotblocking defenseman. With 17 of his 36 points coming off the powerplay he was a constant threat in the opposing side’s zone. His 84 shots blocked led the league in that category.

Cara Hohenberg Knights
Hohenberg led the league in Points (61) and Assists (43) to dominate the offensive game and redefine what the term “offensive defenseman” means. Playing often as a 4th forward on the powerplay, a massive 28 points came off the special teams. Not a slouch in her own end either, she showed that she was ready to sacrifice the body when needed as seen by her 41 hits and 68 shots blocked.

Toivo Kosonen raiders
Kosonen had the 2nd most points by a defenseman this season, reaping 19 Goals and 23 Assists for 42 Points. A rock on both ends of the ice, his +24 differential was 2nd best in the entire League this season. Not a heavy hitter himself, as evidenced by his 15 hits this season, he was among the best in shots blocked with 45. His 19 special teams points place him near the very top of the league in that category.

And congrats on running a really tight ship, you guys had a near-flawless two seasons, and if we had to lose in S31, I'm happy it was to your team.
