In about a week's time, it will have been a full year since I caved to <a href='index.php?showuser=1917' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-13'>lil</a>'s persuasions and made an account on this site. I was wary at first because I thought it would take too much of my time, and in a way, I was right--but the SHL has also been more than fun enough to make up for the time I've invested in it.

Over the past year, I've made a lot of super cool friends (both people I recruited myself and people I met here), built a pretty good defensive defenceman and recently broke 1000 TPE, incited a shitstorm or two, posted a bunch of SMJHL PTs and pointed a lot of rookies in the right directions, and helped GM the Kelowna Knights to back-to-back Laurifer Trophies and a Four Star Cup. It's been pretty legit, to be honest.

Meanwhile, in the (almost) six seasons of her career so far, Mia Landvik spent her first three playing for the Kelowna Knights, where she won the team's Unsung Hero award her rookie season and wore the A (alongside Mikael Talo and captain Mikko Linna) for her second two. Though she never won a Four Star Cup, being a part of that Knights leadership team, starting the waffle party tradition, and the general close atmosphere of that locker room are some of her favourite memories—topped only by the fact that she was drafted fourth overall to the almost-as-awesome New England Wolfpack in S28.

The Wolfpack locker room (which I would mostly describe as being constantly amusing and active, with a special shout-out to how the team actually makes game nights fun for me, a game hater) was just as welcoming for Mia, and not just because she already knew all the young players there. The old guard, the rookies, and the free agents they've acquired over the past few seasons have all been excellent teammates, and Mia has never had cause to regret signing a 66-season (the length so chosen for her jersey number) contract.

Since signing that contract, Mia has had the privilege of playing a role in the team's back-to-back Challenge Cup victories, and while she may have had a slight existential crisis about being a two-time champion at her young age (she's, like, 21, that shit is crazy), taking the Cup home to Norway is an honour she'll never forget. And speaking of Norway, she was also a part of both silver (S29) and bronze (S31) wins with Team Norway. Next up, gold tbh Norway Norway Norway Norway Norway Norway

What do you enjoy most about the site weekly? Seasonally?

It's an obvious answer, but I really like looking at the sim… considering that's the whole point of the site. I like it a lot more now that I've become a GM and understand more about how the sim works, though mostly I've learned that the sim be like Ninja. Maybe that's more of what I enjoy most on a daily basis, though. Weekly… I like coming up with ways to make whatever PT is up into something I can use for Mia's #narrative. Seasonally, I super love IIHF, even though it's not even that exciting? I don't know, I just think it's fun for whatever reason. I also really like scouting for the draft.

What are your TPE goals?

Honestly, I don't know! I just want to keep consistently earning it and making Mia a better player. Someday she might get real power play time and on that day I will cry tears of joy.

Who do you think is best suited organization to become the "next" New England, back to back champion?

I'm definitely not an expert on how the SHL is faring, but uh… I'd really like to see the Platoon do some winning, I think they deserve it based on their team and prospect pool. Also, since you asked, I think if the Admirals continue building for depth in the future, they could become pretty good contenders. Smile

Who is the best at making puns on NEW, and why is it me?

ummmmmm, to be quite honest, the entire team is too good at making puns, and they should stop. like, any day would be good. Also I'm not sure you're the best at making them, but if you were, it would be because you have zero shame about saying stupid things. I don't know whether that's good or bad. You decide.

Who is the best rookie this season on NEW and why is it me?

It's Granlund! Because he's the only rookie on NEW this season! Congrats! But for real tho you're doing great, kid. Scoring dem goals. That shot percentage. Killin' it.

What is your favorite moment from this site so far?

There are lots, but I think it's gotta be winning the Four Star Cup as a GM. After fucking up in the playoffs our first season, we were really gunning for it the second season, and it was immensely satisfying to have all our work drafting and keeping our players active and making lines pay off.

Is it true that Eggy does in fact smell like eggs?

Considering I've never met Eggy, I can't say, but sometimes I catch a waft of eggs through voice chat…

Tell me why I am bad at asking questions.

Well, they're most about you, and also they're kinda vague sometimes, but there's a lot of them and I'm amused, so I'd say you're actually pretty good at asking questions.

Talk about me.

My first experience with you on the site was when we were in the same draft class and you would post in every thread all over the site, which I found impressive and hilarious. And then you KILLED LAINE, which I still think is UNREASONABLE, WHAT THE FUCK, but it worked out since Granlund got drafted to the Wolfpack. Hanging out with you in dubtrack.fm is always super fun, and I really like having you in the locker room. #sawft Smile

What is your favorite part about beating WKP in the playoffs?

My favourite part of beating WKP in the playoffs is the part where NEW gets to move on to the next round and not have to play WKP anymore. It's pretty satisfying to beat a team that's so good, but it also makes me sad for my friends on WKP, because I am a soft soul.

Which Challenge Cup was more satisfying?

agh this is hard because they were satisfying in different ways. S30 was satisfying because it felt like slapping the league in the face with our awesomeness, like, clawing our way into a playoff spot and then rolling all the way to the win? Fucking sick as hell, plus I think Mia played more of a role in that playoff run. S31 was satisfying because of the team being so all-round consistently good, plus back-to-back is no small feat, so it felt like we really deserved it. I think I'll say S30 was more satisfying, though.

What is your favorite part about GMing Kelowna?

Difficult question, because I like doing most GM things. I'd say keeping the rookies active/having fun and teaching them about the site beats out doing lines by a small margin just because the sim is sometimes frustrating and raising my smols is not so much.

Was winning the Challenge cup as a player, or winning the Four Star cup as a GM more enjoyable/rewarding?

The Four Star, to be honest, because it felt like I had much more to do with it, since I helped build the team and spent all that time staring at sims so we'd have the best lines possible. Winning the Challenge Cup was sick af, especially twice and especially with all my NEW teammates, but yeah.

Is it good or bad that you said you have lots to say about me in the NEW Discord?

How has adding points to discipline helped Mia? Relatedly, is she still leading her team in PIMs?

I don't know how it's helped, to be honest, considering that yes, she is indeed still leading her team in PIMs. Adding all that TPE to discipline seemed to just halve her hits count last season, which seems counter productive to her role on the ice. That said, I can't imagine how many PIMs she'd have WITHOUT the points in discipline, so I guess that's a good thing? She keeps punching people, though. I can't explain it. I can't stop it. I've given up. She was supposed to be smol and punchy and by god she is.

What should I have for lunch today?

How is KEL going to win a back to back cup, considering our holes at the center position?

Blind hope and a lot of offence. I'm holding out for Thompson to become a playoff god, and failing that, we'll just have to score a lot of fucking goals. Hopefully our fairly strong defence can keep making up for our trash possession.

Who is the most Generational Talent to ever come out of the Knights organization and why is the answer not Kasperek?

I'm not on the up and up about the history of the league, but there are a lot of retired numbers in the Knights organization that belong to names I recognize--Rogers-Tanaka, Randleman, Smirnov, Cunningham, Onoprienko, Harter… the list goes on. So the answer is definitely not Kasparek, because he only spent one season with the Knights, and even though he was the highest scoring defenceman in SMJHL history in that season, I'm pretty sure his teammates had a lot to do with that. He's been all right at the SHL level, but he's not at generational level yet, so. Generationally drafted in the third round it is.

Since I like both Eggy and french toast a lot, that's an easy number one ranking. I think it'd be chill to eat waffles with a whale, though I'm kind of concerned about the waffles getting soggy. Eating pancakes with a wolf sounds dangerous, so it goes last.

What's the best thing you've ever eaten? Where were you, and what made it the best?

This is hard; nothing is particularly springing to mind. I guess I once had some pretty baller Indian food at a restaurant in NYC that I no longer remember the name of. I was there for a travel study program, and it was 10/10 worth the trip.

Tell us your highest highs and lowest lows as a member/GM of the Kelowna Knights

As a member of the Knights, losing in game 7 of the conference finals to the fucking Whalers was fucking awful. Our team was so good that season, and we were so ready to go all the way, but it was not to be. alas. highest high as a player would have to be when Linna got a hat trick in that same playoff series.

as a GM, getting swept by PGF sucked, as losing generally does, especially since it felt like we shot ourselves in the foot with our line changes. and obviously winning the four star was pretty great, but since I've already detailed how awesome that was, I'll say sniping the Laurifer from the Raiders in S31 was a good feeling.

Mia Landvik had a fight against Mikko Linna in the SHL earlier this season. What are your thoughts on fighting your co-GM?

It wouldn't be such a big deal for my player to fight my co-GM's player if it wasn't for the fact that our players have their own history aka they've been best friends pretty much since day one of being #rookiebabes on the Knights, and they have this problem where they're in love with each other but too stupid to properly be together. If they didn't have that history, it would just be funny, but instead we ended up moving a planned "breakup" (scare quotes since Mia and Mikko are too stupid to actually date properly) up two seasons, and let me tell you, we were not ready for it. At all.

With so many Knights potentially going up next season, is this the last shot at the Four Star Cup before having to go through a re-tool/ rebuild ?

Maybe a bit, but I prefer to think of every season as a rebuild--the constant turnover in the SMJHL doesn't make it improbable. We try to go into every season with no expectations, since that's the easiest way to have them exceeded. There's no doubt that this is a pretty strong team, so we're taking our playoff run as seriously as ever in an effort to get our players that Cup. I think the next draft might be a fairly weak one, but I'm confident that, with the young players we have right now that will be our top guys soon, we can continue to stay strong into next season as well.

You are known to be an organization that prefers to build from within and, unless needed, you tend to steer clear of trading. With the new playoff format in the SMJHL do you think trading will become more important?

I think it remains to be seen how the playoff format works out, and I think it definitely makes trading, especially at the deadline, more interesting. I don't know about it making trading more *important*, though, especially for us as a contending team. That might change if we go into a slump and start seeing more value for ourselves in draft picks over players, but I think since the SMJHL is a development league first and foremost, building through the draft and free agency is always going to be the priority. The SHL is supposed to be fun, and I think success starts from making sure your players are enjoying their time on the site and staying active.

Hardest part about being a Junior GM?

Trying to make lines do what we want is sometimes Incredibly Exhausting, which is what makes it fun. Scouting is also a lot of work, though the results on draft night are also what makes that fun. The truly hardest part is doing it all for the honour and being poor as fuck Tongue

Most rewarding part about being a Junior GM?

Definitely seeing players get excited about the sim results and getting involved with things around the site, and seeing them be rewarded for that when they get drafted high to the SHL. It's also pretty satisfying when a player gets drafted later than they really should've and I get to see them keep improving and proving themselves. Also, winning. Of course.

Talk about Mia and Mikke's friendship!

Mikke is definitely one of Mia's best friends. She was really homesick when she first moved to Kelowna, and though Deets is the one who really got her out of her shell (she had a shell back then, it was wild), she really connected with Mikke as well. She was pretty sad when it looked like maybe he wouldn't come back from Finland after their rookie season at first, but then he did and Mikael was there, so that all worked out excellently. Ever since he trusted her enough to tell her that he's gay (and she told him that she's bi), Mia has sworn in her heart that she will fight any person who tries to touch Mikke. She expresses her love for him by driving him up the wall however she can, including but not limited to: taking penalties, forcibly cuddling him, making lewd jokes about him and Mik at inopportune moments, and showing up at his house to eat his food and pet his dog.

What was Mia's favourite moment as a Knight?

Like I said before, her favourite moment as a player that happened on the ice was in game 5 of their final series against the Whalers. Mikko got his first hat trick and they still felt like they were on top of the world and would make it to the finals. It all went downhill from there, but that moment is still a great memory. But favourite moment overall is way harder to decide because she had a lot of good times with her teammates on the bus, at games, etc etc. She feels Very lucky to have spent those three seasons on the Knights. She just really loved it in Kelowna, okay? Don't bring it up too much or she might cry.

Who's been your biggest steal in the few drafts since you've been Knights GM?

I think it's definitely Vasily Horvat, who we drafted in the 8th round of the S30 draft, 64th overall. There are a couple guys who were drafted after him who are still active, but not that we picked. Horvat has been a solid presence ever since, and he's killing it on our top line this season. He's a quiet dude, but he's consistently active and funny in the locker room, so I'm really happy with that pick. Getting an active who hangs out on the team for a few seasons is excellent, especially since I'm sure it was a stab in the dark at that point of that insane draft. I'll give honourable mention to you, Cory Knouse, since sixteenth overall in the S31 draft was pretty low and ily, and I think if Halfdan Thorstein (S32, 40th overall) carries on how he has been this season and stays down a couple seasons, we'll have gotten a super huge steal in him as well.

What should I be expecting when I officially join Team Norway?

You should be expecting to be in the line-up of the best team in the world!! We're gonna prove it any season now!! Really though you should expect lots of defense-heavy games and a locker room full of the Norwegian flag. It's a great time, I swear. Norway Norway

Still mad about me dropping Mia for Kasparek last season?

Nah, I was never really mad or offended. I mostly just thought it was hilarious (and still think so, if I'm honest). My initial reaction was probably "why would you give Boom this, it's going to go to his head and he'll try to lord it over me forever". I was right. And I'm never going to let you live it down, I hope you know that.

You seem to keep forgetting that I *do* have thoughts about the Red Wings, because you made me tell you about them when I was trying to get you into hockey. So, like, I don't think about the Red Wings a LOT, but I still have Red Wings opinions, and anything I don't know about is your fault, because as the primary caregiver of the Red Wings in this relationship, you're supposed to give me the feelings. I can't be expected to go out and get them myself anymore.

Anyway I love Dylan Larkin and when I see Riley Sheahan's name I think of puppies, and also I love Luke Glendening just because. I'm sad that they're probably not going to make the playoffs (that's a thing, right? scratch it if I'm wrong). They work so hard, those kids, but I think it might help to miss the playoffs for once IDK. That's the extent of my feelings rn I'm too lazy to think about my actual hockey opinions.

What kind of waffle concoctions do you think Mia and Deets have tried creating whilst drunk in Russell's kitchen?

Since Mia is obsessed with candy, I'm sure they've tried to put TONS of different kinds of candy in the waffles--Skittles, Starburst, etc etc. I doubt this ever goes well for them. Also, I'm sure that once they tried to load the waffles with chocolate. This went slightly better, but still was not ideal.

Favorite house / roommate traditions?

Mia has always lived with Deets, so something would be seriously amiss if her favourite tradition wasn't waffles for breakfast. Since moving into Russell's house, though, her favourite tradition has been picking a TV show she, Russell, Deets, and Bennett all binge watch together. The understanding is that they all give a running commentary of their opinions, so they usually watch pretty ridiculous shows. Plus, Deets would kill everyone if he ever had to miss The Voice, which Mia mostly tolerates and will tweet to vote for someone when Deets makes her. Also, Mia quite liked that period of time where Russell didn't know Deets was allergic to cats and all she had to do was look kind of sad for Russell to get her a kitten. This wasn't that long a period a time, but they got two cats out of it, so she regrets nothing.

Is there anything Russell can do to help Mia and get her to punch a few less people on the ice? (He actually thinks it's pretty awesome, but he's slightly worried it might lose them games.)

Ah, probably not, honestly. She's always been very protective of her teammates, and she… well, she doesn't exactly *like* that hockey lets her protect them by punching other people, because fighting people is actually kind of scary if you think of it as your only role on the ice (this is more relevant when injuries are a thing, which in fictional simulation land I guess we just pretend real hard), but even though she's definitely not exactly an enforcer, she's happy to throw down the gloves for the honour of the team. Russell could try to talk to her about why she, specifically, does not ever need to fight her friends, and he should probably give her a talking to about trying to make an off-ice point by punching a friend in the face (which she'd probably cry on him about because she knows it was a stupid thing to do), but she would staunchly say that it doesn't matter if they're a friend or not, if they're coming after the team in whatever way, she's going to punch them. My dumb daughter.

What are Mia's goals over the next couple of years, now that she's already got a couple of cups under her belt?

She doesn't really know; it's been a source of angst for her trying to figure out what she's supposed to be aiming for now that she's gotten the Challenge Cup. She got over it a little when she won it a second time, since the thrill really never wears off and it's always the ultimate goal no matter how many times it's been won before, but she still doesn't have any particular individual goals. She'd probably like to win an individual trophy for something, because who wouldn't, but she doesn't really care to aim for that. She just focuses on improving herself and being a continual asset to the team. (She's very genuinely taken in by the code of masculinity involving self-sacrifice that hockey culture perpetuates, lol.)

Good question! Both these teams rely heavily on the magical power of friendship and hugs to help them win, so that makes them a compelling match-up for comparison and contrast. Since I am not by any means a Columbus Blue Jackets expert (or a New England expert, to be honest, I spend most of my sim-staring time on the SMJHL and just check the SHL sim briefly to see what went down in the games without analyzing anything or thinking too hard), I will admit that I called in lil, an expert in both these teams, for her opinion.

Like the Blue Jackets, New England had seasons and seasons of mediocrity before suddenly becoming great thanks to adding an excellent goaltender to a solidly built all-around-capable team. In New England's case, the solid team came from good drafted prospects and a few trades, including the one that got them Jakob Tanner (and Casper Jakobsson), while in the Blue Jackets' case it was the return to form of a solid team that had been ravaged by injuries (especially in the 2014-15 season), including goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Also like the Blue Jackets, New England does not have big stars who play huge minutes and lead the team's point-scoring by a wide margin, but instead they run four solid lines that work together for effective(ly excellent) results overall.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have never won a Stanley Cup, whereas New England has won multiple Challenge Cups, including the recent back-to-back with the current iteration of the team. However, New England has never won sixteen games in a row. In conclusion, I'm calling this one a wash for now. Smile

Mia Landvik had a fight against Mikko Linna in the SHL earlier this season. What are your thoughts on fighting your co-GM?

With so many Knights potentially going up next season, is this the last shot at the Four Star Cup before having to go through a re-tool/ rebuuld ?

You are known to be an organization that prefers to build from within and, unless needed, you tend to steer clear of trading. With the new playoff format in the SMJHL do you think trading will become more important?
