There is plenty of love for the goal-scoring forwards in the SHL. Thus, it can be particularly frustrating for wingers and centers who aren’t putting the puck in the net, for whatever reason.
Here is a look at the worst-shooting forwards on each SHL team (with at least 10 average minutes per game) who undoubtedly shared some frustration in Season 33. Some are playmakers who aren’t expected to score, others are young players trying to break into the league, and some are veterans with their best days behind them. All of them were certainly overshadowed by more prolific offensive players on their respective teams and now have a moment in the spotlight.
It’s not altogether unsurprising to see the playmaking power forward on this list for Buffalo. However, Wachter saw a slight dip in his goal-scoring in S33 despite setting a new career high for points. The Stampede didn’t need Wachter to score goals, as he lined up with Steven Stamkos, Jr. and Eduard Selich and their combined 42 goals. It’s scary to think how much better this line could have been if Wachter had been a bit luckier on his shot attempts, though.
The Latvian sniper actually improved on his shooting percentage from S32, adding four more goals in the process. Gagner has struggled to find the net since transitioning to the top forward line. If he’s racking up assists for Nicholas Pedersen and Randy Randleman, you won’t see too many Calgary fans complaining. Nonetheless, Gagner seems prime for a breakout season once he finds the shooting touch that helped him post back-to-back 20+ goal seasons during his time in the SMJHL.
There’s little denying the hulking Finn’s best days are behind him, as we are now eight seasons removed from Salmon’s 60-point season when he arrived in Edmonton. Salmon’s 17th season in the SHL was clearly his worst, despite seeing an increase in playing time from last year. Despite his age, Salmon did prove valuable on the power play, where he tallied five of his 15 points on the season.
Possibly the most curious member on this list. Admittedly a playmaking center by trade, Svensson had a solid rookie season in S32 with 11 goals and 11 assists. Both numbers declined in S33, as well as his faceoff percentage. Simply put, it was a rough season for the S31 SMJHL Vyacheslav Onoprienko Trophy winner, but he should be much improved next season.
Another second-year playmaking center, Reflieux isn’t asked to score goals for the P A N T H E R B O Y S. However, he did see his goal-scoring cut in half from a 13-goal rookie season. The assists were still there for the Norwegian, especially on the power play, but Reflieux’s shot certainly eluded him. Probably a byproduct of the dreaded “sophomore slumpâ€, expect a much better season from Reflieux in S34.
In terms of raw points, Ace Redding improved his stats in his third SHL season. He also played an extra 252 minutes and attempted 99 more shots to get there. It took every single one of those 222 shots this season (10th in the SHL) to get to 16 goals. The Scottish monster hopes this season’s struggles are far behind him when Manhattan returns to the ice next season.
The journeyman two-way forward enjoyed the best season of his career in S33, nearly tallying 20 points. However, Feist’s shooting percentage has declined each of the past three seasons as he has failed to develop and improve at the SHL level. It may be more interesting to see which team Feist plays for next season than what he’ll do once he gets there.
A former Vyatcheslav Onoprienko winner like Svensson, Talo struggled to find the net in S33. The Finn tallied 11 goals, but needed more than 150 shots to get there. Talo’s woes extend back to last season’s playoffs, converting on just over six percent of shot attempts in the postseason and posting a 4.76% shot rate for Finland in last season’s IIHF tournament.
:admirals: Jacob Renninger
The second-year playmaker lost nine goals from his rookie season, but also got a lot of help this season. Between free-agent acquisitions and signature Portland trades, Renninger moved from the first line last season to the third line this season, and his production dropped accordingly. This is hardly an indictment on the young winger, but merely an effect of Portland making steps to contend in S33 and beyond.
In Season 30, Sirmais led the SMJHL in goal-scoring, outdueling Hans Moleman in a thrilling chase. This season … Sirmais didn’t score a lot, in arguably the worst season of his three-year SHL career. Some of that can be attributed to a change of scenery, as Sirmais joined the Riot after being traded from the Hamilton Steelhawks after a 14-goal season. Perhaps another season with his new teammates will help Sirmais shake out the bugs and get back to putting pucks in the net.
Lots of things did not go according to plan for Texas this season, but Charlyb’y not scoring is not on that list. The self-proclaimed “face-off specialist†has never taken more than 62 shots in his four-season career, and his 48 shots this season were his lowest total yet. Charlyb’y finished seventh in the SHL in face-off percentage (54.88 percent, a slight decline from previous seasons), so he did his job.
Now in his 15th season, Flamel is four seasons removed from his last 10-goal season. Outside of a 21-goal season in Seattle in S22, the playmaking winger has never been a goal-scorer, so this isn’t a surprising inclusion on the list. Flamel played an important role on the second line this season, facilitating Damien Wert and Dane Rowe.
McDoodle is better known for his insanely physical play style, but the 10-year vet is usually better offensively than this – and only a late scoring surge helped him get to five goals. McDoodle won more than 55 percent of his faceoffs (fifth in the SHL) and tallied 184 hits (seventh in the league), but it was the Czechoslovakian’s worst offensive season since a two-goal season in S28.
