This is a redraft article for the Season 27 draft. A draft that honestly had the potential to compete with some of the top drafts in history with a high number of recreates and some motivated first bloods. However the draft is marred by some honestly incredible failures.

This article will feature two “redrafts” one based on TPE totals and another subjective ranking primarily based on SHL in sim performance.

Here is the original draft. I included the first two rounds because every player in the 3rd round went inactive with only one player reaching 400 TPE.

Okay before reading this list… Realize that I based this off their career stats not individual seasons. So if someone had a monster season last year and now looks amazing they may be lower here if their overall career was weaker. I also must say that the top four are probably interchangeable. All very strong players.

1st - 4th in TPE – D - Chris Crutchfield 1566 TPE Drafted 2nd Overall -2

Crutchfield was drafted 2nd overall sits finished 4th overall in terms of TPE. I believe he has been the best performing player in the draft. I ranked him above fellow defenseman Lord Vader primarily because he has more production and shot blocks in fewer minutes than Vader, specifically goals as well. Vader does have a solid hits lead but I think Crutch slightly edges him out.

2nd - 3rd in TPE – W - Maximilian Wächter 1568 TPE Drafted 15th Overall +12

Being drafted 15th overall (first pick in the second round) Max was an absolutely massive steal as he sat 3rd overall in TPE. On the ice… Maximilian is a beast. He competes physically and puts up numbers. Raven may have scored more and done so in almost 2000 fewer minutes but I love that a power forward is succeeding in a league with so few of them.

3rd – 5th in TPE – W - Raven Silverwing 1502 TPE Drafted 7th Overall +2

Raven is the SMJHL Simmer and went from being drafted 7th overall to 5th overall in terms of TPE. Raven has impressive scoring numbers considering Raven played fewer minutes than the others in the top four. I simply have to put Maximilian above Raven due to the hit totals coupled with strong production.

4th – 1st in TPE – D - Lord Vader 1745 TPE Drafted 5th Overall +4

Lord Vader is the highest TPE player from the draft. By a solid margin as well. Putting Vader 4th is no slight as it is hard to see the statistical impact of defensive defenseman in the sim. As I said above Crutchfield’s goal and shot block totals put him above Vader in my opinion. I placed the two forwards above Vader but really depending on who is judging he could easily be #1 on this list as well.

5th – 2nd in TPE – W - Shane Gagner 1597 TPE Drafted 9th Overall +7

Shane Gagner was a strong riser going from 9th in the draft to 2nd in TPE totals. Gagner has had a solid career to date. Seemingly a well rounded top six winger.

6th - 8th in TPE – G - Matt Lewis-Flood 1123 TPE Drafted 10th Overall +2

I find goalies hard to judge in this list. Flood rose from 10th Overall to 8th in TPE and has been a solid starter for many seasons now. His numbers are better than Berger which is why he is here. I could see him being placed above Gagner but Flood is a mid-tier starting goalie imo so I’ll put Gagner who is a strong top six winger above him.

7th – 6th in TPE – W - Jaxson Reynolds 1406 TPE Drafted 18th Overall +12
GP 350 G 75 A 77 P 152 MIN 6223 +/- +45 PIM 59 HITS 185

Reynolds leaped up the charts going from 18th overall to 6th in TPE rankings. Him and Gagner are really close in terms of production but Gagner has a slight physical edge and produced those numbers in 50 fewer games. Reynolds again is a solid top six winger. Gagner/Flood/Reynolds are easily interchangeable.

8th – 7th in TPE – G - Lukas Berger 1125 TPE Drafted 12th Overall +5
GP 306 W 140 L 123 OTL 43 SV% .896 GAA 3.15 MIN 18600 SO 10 AST 14

Honestly I was surprised by his career numbers, I figured they would be better. Berger is a starting goalie in the SHL and that puts him above the rest of the pack who are bottom six or depth defenseman. I included assists in the goalie statistics because I noticed Berger had a ton for a goalie! Perhaps related to puck handling? Not sure.

9th – 16th in TPE – D - Wendell Luna 566 TPE Drafted 25th Overall +9
GP 350 G 12 A 135 P 147 MIN 7273 +/- -1 PIM 207 HITS 517 SB 462

Surprise here for folks. Here we have someone who finished high up the charts mainly due to others failures being drafted 25th overall to 9th overall in TPE. Luna has substantially less TPE than a number of players bellow him on the rankings but Luna has been a solid depth defenseman who put up solid assist totals, hits and shot blocks.

10th – 10th in TPE – C - Dane Rowe 809 TPE Drafted 11th Overall +1
GP 300 G 40 A 84 P 124 MIN 5353 +/- -42 PIM HITS 104 FO% 49.55

Rowe pretty much was drafted where he should have been only moving 1 on the rankings list. He is a solid 3rd line center who produced more than the other centers on this list. Solid career for Rowe so far.

11th – 12th in TPE – C/W Krysztof Kowalski 752 TPE Drafted 1st Overall Retiring -11
GP 400 G 52 A 84 P 136 MIN 6610 +/- -61 PIM 50 HITS 138 FO% 48.95

Kowalski was the first overall pick in large part due to his agent Banjo being a well liked individual on the boards. Kowalski moved around a lot in his career as a bottom six winger but had one strong season at center with Edmonton last year. This is his final season as he has announced his retirement. While a bust Kowalski at least was serviceable and is going out strong.

12th – 11th in TPE – C - Dickie Pecker 778 TPE Drafted 26th Overall +15
GP 300 G 29 A 79 P 108 MIN 5069 +/- -95 PIM 179 HITS 373 FO% 46.81

A quiet success here Pecker was drafted 26th Overall and finished 11th in TPE. Pecker has played his career primarily in Buffalo on the 3rd line which has resulted in a terrifying +/- but we understand the circumstances. Considering where he was drafted the fact Pecker has continued to play at the SHL level can only be described as a successful career.

13th – 15th in TPE – D - William Fedorov 610 TPE Drafted 22nd Overall +7
GP 300 G 13 A 58 P 71 MIN 4975 +/- +4 PIM 255 HITS 456 SB 263

In my opinion one of the biggest tragedies of the draft, Fedorov was the highest TPE player heading into the SMJHL and possibly SHL drafts. Unfortunately he had to wait an entire month before seeing his player play a single game and I think it sapped his drive. He made a comeback recently but vanished once more. Still considering he was drafted at 22nd overall he has made a career for himself as a depth defenseman.

14th – 13th in TPE – W - Reinis Aumeisters 702 TPE Drafted 24th Overall +11
GP 250 G 35 A 36 P 71 MIN 4020 +/- +19 PIM 24 HITS 97

Reinis has continued to find a spot as a bottom six winger on his team but with limited minutes and production. Another case of a solid career given his origins. Drafted 24th overall reaching 700+ tpe is solid.

15th – 9th in TPE – C - Alexander Charlyb’y 826 TPE Drafted 17th Overall +8
GP 250 G 26 A 36 P 62 MIN 3950 +/- -49 PIM 68 HITS 272 FO% 56.83

While Charlyb’y did finish 9th in terms of TPE… he is Charlyb’y and is useless outside the faceoff dot. He has seen limited minutes his entire career and simply is there to win faceoffs, which he does quite well. Being drafted 17th overall makes this career reasonable. He is going to announce his retirement shortly so this will be his last season.

16th – 20th in TPE – D - Sesugh Uhaa 424 TPE Drafted 23rd Overall Retired +3
GP 200 G 8 A 37 P 45 MIN 3162 +/- +4 PIM 166 HITS 346 SB 190

Uhaa has retired and the agent has retired with a stronger player. Uhaa was drafted appropriately for his career. Managing to find minutes on bottoms pairings for a few seasons before retiring.

17th – 19th in TPE – C - Eugene Feist 472 TPE Drafted 27th Overall +8
GP 250 G 24 A 37 P 61 MIN 3450 +/- -75 PIM 53 HITS 106 FO% 47.86

Feist has played a number of seasons on a variety of teams despite vanishing into free agency for a couple seasons after his rookie year. Good for him to fight back to the SHL level and having played 250 games after being drafted 27th overall is commendable.

18th – 17th in TPE - Selena Bauer 523 TPE Drafted 8th Overall -9
GP 122 G 50 L 57 OTL 15 SV% .909 GAA 2.97 MIN 7406 SO 0 AST 2

Was not sure how to rate almost career backup goalies. Bauer for some reason has better stats than Berger which is why I think SHL should just burn the sim to the ground because goalies make no sense. Considering she was drafted above both Lewis-Flood and Berger (both starting goalies) she is a major bust.

19th – 14th in TPE – W - Scotty Reay 615 TPE Drafted 3rd Overall Retired -11
GP 250 G 22 A 29 P 51 MIN 4114 +/- -36 PIM 26 HITS 104

Damn Merica what happened. Scotty Reay’s agency is one of the best known on the boards and has produced multiple hall of fame players. Reay never broke out at the SHL level after, in my opinion, leaving the SMJHL before he was ready. A major bust.

20th – 23rd in TPE – D - Montel V. Porter 378 TPE Drafted 4th Overall Retired -19
GP 200 G 0 A 14 P 14 MIN 1621 +/- -7 PIM 104 HITS 214 SB 96

Here is a colossal bust as well. Montel V. Porter was the product of an agency who previously produced a HoF goalie in Sawyer. Soon after the draft Porter’s progress stalled and after four seasons Porter had not scored a single goal and retired. The agency has announced they plan to return in the near future. Drafted 4th overall MVP is anything but.

21st – 24th in TPE – W - Sim Browski 381 TPE Drafted 13th Overall Free Agent -11
GP 51 G 4 A 4 P 8 MIN 746 +/- -16 PIM 39 HITS 139

Browski is still trying to make an SHL career for himself, still being available in Free Agency. In Browski’s single season he put up okay numbers for a bottom six player including a impressive hit total. He is likely never going to see action again. Drafted 13th overall Browski is a bust.

22nd – 18rd in TPE – C - Riley McDonald 507 TPE Drafted 14th Overall Retired -4

McDounald came from an agency who produced one of the most prolific threats in SHL history who is now enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Seeing McDonald Retiring after only one SHL season was a surprise. His departure specifically stated that he felt the league culture lead to his early retirement.

23rd – 22nd in TPE – W - Riley Mason 380 TPE Drafted 19th Overall Retired -3
GP 150 G 9 A 8 P 17 MIN 2180 +/- -42 PIM 15 HIT 32

Mason was the product of an agency who produced two very serviceable defenseman who spent many years patrolling the blue lines of the SHL. While Mason’s activity was questioned heading into the draft I for one expected Mason to at least become a solid depth piece. However early retirement claimed Mason following poor early numbers.

24th – 27th in TPE - Brian Wade 268 TPE Drafted 21st Overall Retired -6
Never Played in the SHL

Brian Wade came from an agency who has a number of players who failed to materialize. 0 games played at the SHL level.. a bust despite being picked 21st.

25th – 26th in TPE - Bernie Sanders 283 Drafted 28th Overall Retired +2
Never Played in the SHL

Another controversial Sanders did more talking than producing retiring before he played a single SHL game. He technically was on a team’s roster for a season but played 0 minutes. At 28th overall he managed to improve his stock by two spots but retired early.

26th – 28th in TPE - Kylo Ren 255 TPE Drafted 16th Overall Retired -12
Never Played in the SHL

What was Toronto thinking picking JPL at 16th? Kylo Ren retired and never became anything. Ending up the lowest TPE player of the first two rounds.

27th - 21st in TPE - Hannu Hamalainen 398 TPE Drafted 6th Overall Retired -15
Never Played in the SHL

Perhaps one of the biggest busts in history (if Bojo’s Machine is right) Hannu Hamalainen retired from Buffalo recreated and retired again leaving for the GOMHL. Creating a fair amount of controversy in his short SHL career coupled with never playing a single SHL game make him a horrid pick at 6th overall.

28th – 25th in TPE - Arik Mikita 365 TPE Drafted 20th Overall Retired/Banned -5
Never Played in the SHL

Rezik got banned because he is Rezik. No one wasted a high pick on him which is a good thing. His player was forced into retirement following off ice issues.

Final Remarks

This draft was really a let down. Ridiculous number of HoF recreates in here busted. Lots of solid recreates failed to pan out as well. However there were plenty of great members to come out of this draft. Overall I think it is a decent draft with actives through the first round. Anyways this was not the best written piece in the world but I hope you enjoyed it
