Edmonton bids farewell

<div align="center">A FOND FAREWELL

Late last week, the rebuilding Edmonton Blizzard moved two long time players and members of the S28 Challenge Cup championship team. The first move occurred early Saturday morning as Blizzard management shipped long time starting netminder Brett Broadway to the Seattle Riot, along with a 1st round draft selection in the upcoming draft, for the promising young Russian goalie Ekaterina Rudnikova and a 2nd round draft selection in the same draft. Almost 24 hours later they moved the slick playmaking vodka enthusiast Ivan Koroviev to the Minnesota Chiefs for multiple picks in upcoming drafts. Both of these players were originally drafted by the Edmonton Blizzard in S26 and S25 respectively, and both meant a lot to the Blizzard faithful and the community of Edmonton as a whole.

Selected 9th overall in the S26 Draft, the young Norwegian netminder, Brett Broadway, knew he had big shoes to fill. The Edmonton Blizzard had been known for producing star calibre goal tenders for some time now, and he had no intention on becoming an exception. It wasn't until S28 that Broadway would get his first taste of the SHL as he'd start 10 games in a back up role to the now retired Jakub Aittokallio. Broadway was an overnight success, posting a delicious 6-1-3 record to go along with a 0.91 save percentage and 2.455 goals against average. Perhaps the biggest take away was 3 of those wins were shutouts. He, along with the rest of the S28 Blizzard would go on to win the challenge cup that season. S30 saw the true emergence of Broadway as he'd take on the starting role from Aittokallio. In 41 games he posted a scrumptious 29-10-2 record with a 0.917 save percentage and a 2.459 goals against average. No doubt a high bar to set in any season, let alone a rookie campaign. In fact, it was so high he topped all SHL goaltenders and took home his first of eventual 3 Miko Honcho awards. S31 saw him take a step back in the wins department, but strengthen his save percentage and GAA numbers, once again winning the Honcho as well as his first of 2 John McBride trophies with the Blizzard.

Another memorable performance by Broadway.

After posting stellar numbers in S30 and S31 Broadway was a household name and going in to S32 was expected to lead all goaltenders once again. Not only did he do so, but he did so in amazing fashion posting 29 wins, an insane 0.926 save percentage and 2.02 goals against average, career bests to date, and a ridiculous 8 shutouts. Although the Blizzard would fail to three-peat as conference champions, Broadway took home his 3rd Honcho, 2nd McBride as well as the Sarmad Khan and Ron Mexico awards. Needless to say, a season for the ages. Much like the Blizzard team as a whole, his success faded as the team entered regression and the eventual rebuild, but that won't tarnish his legacy in the blue and beige.

Career numbers with the Blizzard
283 starts
157 wins
0.912 S%
2.511 GAA
27 SO
1 Challenge Cup (S28)
3 Mike Honcho (S30, S31, S32)
2 John McBride (S31, S32)
1 Ron Mexico (S32)
1 Sarmad Khan (S32)

Often referred to as one of, if not the deepest, drafts at the time, Ivan Koroviev was plucked by the Edmonton Blizzard with the 7th overall selection the S25 SHL Entry Draft. After helping his SMJHL Kelowna Knights capture a 4 star cup win in S25 Koroviev made his move to the SHL posting 18 points in his rookie season, primarily as a 2nd/3rd line utility player. Season after season Ivan posted bigger and better totals, the most notable of which was a 56 point campaign in S33 as a member of the star studded trio of Kane, Sarantez and Koroviev.

Not one to shy away from a good time, Koroviev has some fun with the Blizzard home crowd.

Although still quite new to the Blizzard at the time, everyone in the dressing room took an immediate liking to the tsar of all things vodka as he'd be voted to become alternate captain in just his 3rd season on the team and would retain the position until being traded in S36. A consistent presence on and off the ice, Koroviev was fan favourite and will be sorely missed.

Career numbers with the Blizzard
500 games played
138 goals
197 assists
335 points
+21 rating
1 Challenge Cup (S28)

The Blizzard management and the city of Edmonton would like to thank Brett Broadway (<a href='index.php?showuser=51' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Toast</a>) and Ivan Koroviev (<a href='index.php?showuser=1827' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Alucard</a>) for their unwavering commitment to the Edmonton Blizzard. Good luck with your new teams, you'll always be welcome here in Edmonton!</div>
