If QC wasn't my brother, it could have easily been you, Sophia or Adam at #2 in my honest opinion.
That may be true, but I think QC being a power forward also had appeal.

No, I'm a scrub. McJ figured there's a better chance of me staying active with my IRL brother bugging me if I started to slack. Tongue

Especially considering my build at the time of the draft, I was a bruiser not a point producer. Were it just based on skaters, I would have pegged you and <a href='index.php?showuser=2587' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-10'>adamantium</a> going to Hamilton (which many others had in their predictions. WKP had expressed interest, so I might have pulled off #3 but more likely <a href='index.php?showuser=2582' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-30'>goilers</a>, <a href='index.php?showuser=2585' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Coach Biz</a> or <a href='index.php?showuser=2565' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-52'>dizzyDC</a>.

What's the best draft class this site has seen so far, and why?

I'd have to say S31. Now it may not be the "best" (I recall someone saying S20 was good and I'm sure some of the earlier years were solid too), but it's the best in the time that I've been here. A quick glance shows me that 10 S31 rookies (not including recreates) are now either SHL, SMJHL, or IIHF GMs. The draft had 7 rounds, and 49 are still on SHL rosters today. Of those 49, 22 have 1,000+ TPE.

Lol I don't think it's modesty. There's no way I should have gone #1 overall, that being said I think there are a decent handful of players from our class that are going to have damn good careers.

- Let's go back to your SHL draft. In hindsight, do you think you would have/should have been drafted in the position that you were, knowing what you know now? Give yourself a redraft position!

Honestly, back then I was active in the sense that I did the tasks & trainings, but I wasn't too talkative on the boards which explains my tragic drop down the draft order. I still think that I was drafted way lower than where it should've been and that any team that skipped me multiple times over (BUF & HAM) regrets it today.
Looking back at it now I think that I would most likely be picked late 1st or early 2nd round depending on what team needs are.
FYI I was picked 39th OA in S31 SHL Draft. I think between 12-18 is where I should be redrafted.

I think a lot would have changed in the S35 draft, but the top 3 would have stayed the same. After that I expect there would have been some changes if EDM and Izzy had maybe talked more before the draft. I think Edmonton would have selected Garrett instead, Seattle would have taken Bennett with Garrett off the board and Calgary wouldn't have traded down and instead taken Izzy, the guy I believe they were originally targeting at 6.

Round One:

1. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Robert Phelps  Whalers
2. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Buffalo Stampede) - Angelo Odjick Whalers
3. Platoon West Kendall Platoon - Finn Krüger Mammoths
4. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (via Hamilton Steelhawks) -  Louie Garrett Scarecrows
5. Riot Seattle Riot - Sophia Bennett Whalers
6. Dragons Calgary Dragons -Mike Izzy Knights

I dont think exchanging Garrett, Bennett or anyone else at #4 would have helped Edmonton more than drafting Izzy because history never recorded the important hands on ground work that Izzy did alongside friend Karl to help put in motion some of the things that this healthy Edmonton franchise needed in its rebuild infacy.. or how invested a Mike Izzy was in his role in being one of the people to help EDM back towards prominanace. I dont think anyone in the know would contest that.

But the reality is that its extremely difficult to be on the front lines of deep and painful 1st attempt rebuild.. for both management and its first group of rebuilders. Thats why Hamiltons on there 2nd or 3rd try at it.. Buffalo struggled the first time around and other recent rebuilds have seen casualties along the way. There were no bad guys, no factions or ill will between managemet and the #4 pick.. just a bit of inexperience between a 1st gen player and 1st time management with alot of war scars from the season and the work put in.

If you believe that Izzy did do important things in the on set of the rebuild.. and that Karl and Ace got back a strong talent back in cuddles and have marched forward advancing each season... than i would say that the Izzy pick was needed and worked out .... even if it didnt work out as well as expected.

Oh, I certainly think that ICH was picked a bit too fast. But if we look at my draft class in general I don't think that there are a lot of extra class players out there from my draft season right now. Our time will come. I would give myself the 15th pick.

I think I should have went higher for sure. At least one pick higher or at least a team that would not trade me immediately...

I'm still bitter about going so low in the entry draft my rookie year - I was one of the more active people on the site at that time, and I think I definitely got hurt by being on a really bad juniors team. Having to play backup for three SHL seasons really impacted my activity, so I know that if I'd gone higher, I probably would be a much better player. Thankfully tho everything worked out and now I'm kicking ass anyway&nbsp; B)

I think what hurt you the most was the sheer amount of goalies in the draft. A few teams probably said "ehhh why draft a goalie early, we'll just pick whatever is left whilst focusing on skaters". Which sucked for you that night.

- What's the best draft class this site has seen so far, and why?

I don't think you can deny (at least in recent memory) that the S31 and S36 reddit drafts produced some of the best talent in the league. But thats part of the reddit allure... the sheer volume of players produces more talent and probably more comradely/rivalry within the class to stick around and produce.

but outside of those 2 draft classes, there's a STRONG case for S35 as the best in recent memory. lets take a look at the top 7 players picked.

These were TPE numbers from 2 weeks ago! so add on an additional 25-30 more TPE per player...

Robert Phelps - 776 TPE
Angelo Oljick - 712 TPE
Fin Kruger- 664 TPE
Mike Izzy - 715 TPE
Louis Garrett - 728 TPE
Sophia Bennett - 720 TPE
Artom Zhumbyev - 625 TPE

What draft outside of the reddits could you find a draft that boasts this type of top 7 to start a draft?

From ToeDragons highest TPE earners in the 30's:

1 WIN Jason Visser 1502 3.15
2 EDM Tigole Bitties 516 3.14
3 BUF Ludwig Koch Schröder 1488 3.11
4 CAL Joe Kurczewski 1461 3.05
5 HAM Robert Phelps 720 3.05
6 NEW Cody Fletcher 486 3.04
7 BUF Dani Forsberg 853 3
8 TOR Chris York 1032 2.98
9 WIN Max Weber 1242 2.96
10 LAP Sophia Bennett 680 2.88
11 WKP John Langabeer 1001 2.87
12 CAL Roman Augustus 487 2.86
13 CAL Mike Izzy 663 2.85
14 MIN Terrance Nova 1178 2.83
15 SEA Louie Garrett 674 2.81
16 HAM Noro Wozy 801 2.78
17 SEA Kyle Kylrad 1158 2.76
18 WKP Finn Krüger 640 2.76
19 BUF Alexis Metzler 1322 2.73
20 MAN Ace Redding 1426 2.72
21 NEW Xander Green 806 2.71
22 WKP Alex Light 1307 2.7
23 HAM Angelo Odjick 641 2.7
24 MIN Isak Ødegård 463 2.7
25 TOR Zander Rhys 946 2.69
26 LAP Timo Haas 1301 2.68
27 WIN Zach Evans 1295 2.68
28 WKP Pietra Volkova 1331 2.66
29 WIN Karl Hefeweizen 460 2.65
30 HAM Oliver König 458 2.63
31 NEW Toivo Kosonen 1278 2.62
32 MAN Luke Atmey 1197 2.62
33 WIN Artom Zhumbayev 612 2.6

So this group not only is active and engaged but there also fierce player build earners...

but move past the 7 and youll find a ton of strong talent and emerging talent across the draft!

Shoyu Kikkoman
Cam Oulette
Fedor Shibirokov
Jack Hansen
44
Chuck Goody Jr
Chris Smulander
Spitfire
and others .....

S35 which was considered an OK draft with some decent top players is now a whos who of young talent in the SHL....

Quote:- What's the best draft class this site has seen so far, and why?

S20. The original big ass reddit draft and arguably the most successful one, franchise players all the way into the 4th round and good SHL contributors all the way to the 5th. The only other draft that might come close would be the S5 one, but I wasn't around for that so I don't know all the details surrounding it.

Quote:- All 14 teams in the SHL have cycled through GMs in their past. Out of all of the SHL's former GMs, whom would you have wanted to play for the most? In your opinion, what made them a good GM?

It's actually someone that is still in office: Wasty. I've wanted to play for him for so long but somehow it just hasn't happened, probably because I've rarely ever hit FA and when I did, the opportunity just wasn't there.

Quote:- Let's go back to your SHL draft. In hindsight, do you think you would have/should have been drafted in the position that you were, knowing what you know now? Give yourself a redraft position!

Even back at the time I felt that First Overall was too early, I certainly wasn't a fan of suddenly having all the pressure of a #1 selection on my shoulders. But then again, many of the other top prospects had told the team picking at #1 that they didn't want to go there so they didn't have much of a choice either. Sadly, many of the top selections of the S29 draft ended up busting so even though I have been pretty lazy with this player, there are only one or two that have overtaken me in the meantime, so I think that I'd still be a Top-3 selection.

I got drafted 5th overall in my SHL draft and I think that is probably pretty fair. Phelps and Odjick were definitely going to Hamilton 1st and 2nd and those were probably the correct choices. West Kendall needed defense and got the best defenseman with Kruger. 4, 5, and 6 could have been any combination of Mike Izzy, Sophia Bennett, and myself. Honestly if I had to go back and redo the draft I would maybe be inclined to move myself down to 6th. Izzy and Bennett both had stronger SMJHL careers than myself, but I believe at the time of the draft everyone got drafted to teams that they were happy with.

<a href='index.php?showuser=2572' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-10'>DrunkenTeddy</a> <a href='index.php?showuser=2583' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-17'>QuantumCowboy</a> <a href='index.php?showuser=2587' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-10'>adamantium</a> <a href='index.php?showuser=2585' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Coach Biz</a> <a href='index.php?showuser=2582' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-30'>goilers</a>

That’s the thing about the s35 class... Phelps was the clear 1OA but the next 6 could have gone in any order with no shame!
