"Have A Day" Closes Its Doors
#1

Tor Tuck’s side project has declared bankruptcy and will be closing its doors. Tor Tuck opened a small magazine in the St. Louis area that followed the stars of the Simulation Hockey League. The magazine exclusively employed military veterans and at risk teenagers from the St. Louis area who aspired to be involved in sports or the news.

While the “Have A Day” magazine was initially funded 100% from Tor Tuck’s own pockets, it was intended to be a pursuit that was self-funded after it got going. Unfortunately for Tor Tuck and those in the St. Louis community that were being helped by employment and opportunity from the magazine, this vision was not able to become a reality.

After several months of preparation and the eventual roll-out of the magazine, its first issue was released around game one hundred and twenty of the Simulation Hockey League season 37 regular season. While the issue definitely had some issues, Tor Tuck was a terrible editor and his skills with graphics were all but nonexistent prior to the first issue, it was met with a good amount of success and sold enough issues that Tor Tuck thought he would be able to keep the lights on at “Have A Day” magazine for the foreseeable future.

After a few months waiting to see exactly how much revenue the magazine was bringing in Tor Tuck started digging around and doing some investigating with the credit union that handled the finances for the venture. It did not take much digging for Tor Tuck to find that all of his payment was on hold because the Simulation Hockey League’s legal and media team were unclear on how to handle the magazine.

Tor Tuck created the “Have A Day” magazine as a fan of the game and used original images and content for the content. However, the images, names, players, and statistics used were researched by him and the rest of the magazine’s crew from real life games of the Simulation Hockey League. This left the representatives of the league unclear on how they should go about paying or punishing Tor Tuck and his new magazine. Should he be paid for his efforts despite them not being an official function of the league, but providing a unique and interesting service? While Tuck continued to wait the magazine’s balance got closer and closer to the red and Tor Tuck made the decision to inject some more of his own capital and work towards getting out a more refined issue of the magazine.

After another week of work at the magazine an issue was out featuring several exciting games, more refined and frankly better graphics, improvements to fonts and presentation, and more content. The second rendition of the “Have A Day” magazine was something Tor Tuck and the team were much prouder of. This issue seemed to generate a lot more buzz than the original issue and Tor Tuck was convinced that the magazine would survive and he had created a hit that would sustain itself.

Meanwhile, Tor Tuck was also still investigating the issues with the original printing of “Have A Day” magazine and the Simulation Hockey League. After reaching out to various people in the league front office the magazine received five hundred thousand dollars for their work on issue one. Clearly the league had not valued the magazine’s contributions to the league as much as Tor Tuck and the team and anticipated.

Tor Tuck still had some hope that he could find an amenable solution to the problems that were arising out of issue one before it was time for issue three. However, while Tor Tuck received support and advice from many in the Simulation Hockey League community, his talks with the league’s lawyers and media representatives proved to be ineffective.

Shortly following his final talks Tor Tuck realized that his own pockets were not deep enough to sustain the “Have A Day” magazine on his own for minimal pay and he did not believe he would be able to reach an agreement or consensus with the Simulation Hockey League to change that. As a result, those working for the “Have A Day” magazine were laid off from their positions and forced to move on to other things and greener pastures. Tor Tuck has continued to answer follow up fan mail from fans, community members, and other in the Simulation Hockey League community regarding the first two issues of the magazine and any questions regarding future issues.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of the inquiries are surrounding future issues that Tor Tuck has been informing people will not come to be. The support from the community has been excellent and Tor Tuck would like to issue a thank you for their efforts in trying to keep the magazine running in the long run. In the end, the magazine’s battle for legitimacy and recognition from the league was not one that Tor Tuck believed he would win without burning down far too many future bridges and thus he has decided to wave the white flag and search for other endeavors.

With that said, “Have A Day” magazine would like to formally and officially announce it has closed its doors for the foreseeable future and likely forever. Tor Tuck appreciates the fans of the magazine and hopes that there is a future where the league is supportive of fans of the Simulation Hockey League and community that bring interesting and unique substance to the league in forms other than written media and player signature graphics.

Tor Tuck still possess the “Have A Day” equipment and original works and would be willing to pass the torch to another brave soul. Be warned it is recommended that brave soul have interest in pushing the envelope of what is considered valuable substance in the league and has a familiarity with vector graphics and a willingness to collect the necessary statistics to put forth a quality product. If you believe you are up to the task feel free to contact Tor Tuck and it is likely an arrangement can be reached.

Before completely removing himself from the “Have A Day” mindset Tor Tuck intends on eventually issuing one final edition of the magazine featuring all of the original pieces Tor Tuck created and designed for the magazine and future issues of “Have A Day.” Hours of time was put into creating the various team uniforms and some of them have yet to be seen by the public eye, which would be a shame for the creative minds behind them.

We at “Have A Day” magazine hope you enjoyed our two first and last issues of the magazine. Congratulations to the few players who were able to be featured within the magazine due to their excellence on the ice. Sadly, with the closure of “Have A Day” it is clear “The Man” has won this battle as the little guy, Tor Tuck, is forced to walk away from his first endeavor outside of professional sports.

The "Have A Day" team has attached the previous and final two issues of the magazine below free of charge to all readers and fans below:

Have a Day was something I always looked forward too on the NSFL, and I was very excited to see it cross over to the SHL. Sad to see it go, but if they aren't paying you enough for the time and effort this decision makes sense.

Just to clear things up, the grading team was really confused on how to grade these types of articles. I talked to ErM about this too as he contacted me about it. Sorry man, I enjoyed the designs but it wasn't enough words in the issues for us to give it what it's worth.

Yeahthat

Kind of difficult for a team with a rubric of just words to grade something with cool graphic compilations.

Just more of the SHL being the SHL. Killing creativity in favor busywork/word count.

Keep on trucking!

Wow this looks like something that would have been a great way to promote our league on social media or something.

Sorry it didn't work out ErM but I think this was really cool.

Cheers

It's disappointing to hear this, especially when you say "what it's worth" implying you know it should get more money.

Well, we follow a certain set of guidelines when grading. If I wasn't following those guidelines I would give it money is what I'm saying.

This is pretty standard issue...

I thought it was an awesome idea, and I was pretty pumped when I made one of the issues. Too bad it can't be worth it for you, and that things like this are governed by a rigid set of rules.
