Zach Evans: Early Addition to the Mexico Shortlist Looking at some Jets' stats.
#1

The other night the Winnipeg Jets traveled to Minnesota to take on the Chiefs. While both teams play in different conferences this was set to be a showdown between two of the SHL’s finest. It would also mark a milestone for the season. 11 minutes into the first period Max Webber skated into the Minnesota Chief’s zone and then passed it to Luke Flemming who passed it straight to Zach Evans. Evans had the puck for only a second as he passed the puck right back to Flemming. Flemming took a shot, which Olli O'Koivu stopped. O’Koivu couldn’t quite get control and the puck bounced off his pad. Max Webber collected the puck and fired at a wide open net. This marked Webber’s 9th goal of the season, but more importantly this marked Zach Evans’ 50th point of the season. Evans went on to get another point as the Jets won 5-3.

After this game Evans’ had 51 points and became the first player, by several points, to clear the 50 point mark this season. This means that Evans is officially going to be a point per game player for the rest of the season no matter what happens. This marks the 3rd time in his career that Evans has achieved this mark as he accomplished this in the last 2 seasons.

Since Evans was drafted 5th overall in S31 by the Jets, the team has been in on an upward trend and Evans has been a big part in this trajectory. Evans is now a 7 year veteran and in that time has earned 273 points in 337 games. That’s quite a fine number but this season Evans has been particularly brilliant as he is averaging 1.4 points per game, easily the highest average of his career to this point. At this current pace Evans is expected to score 70 points this season, a truly remarkable number. Those are Ron Mexico type numbers.

This point production has been a big part in helping the Jets to play such phenomenal hockey for the 2nd straight year. Evans is just the current front runner in the lead right now in points scored as currently there are 4 Winnipeg players in the top 5 for points. This production from the whole team, lead by Evans, has allowed Winnipeg to average 4.27 goals per game. That is 1 entire goal more than the league average of 3.14. Evans, who has many teammates to thank in aiding him to be the first past the 50 point mark, can take pride in being part of a golden era in Winnipeg Jets history. Such a loaded team surely will be a force to deal with for the foreseeable future.

Whether or not Zach Evans keeps his point total remains to be seen as this season presses forward but it is clear that he has been the breakout player so far this year. If the Jets can just find a way to keep this team together going forward into the future they are going to be a real dynasty. As for Evans, the 7 year Russian veteran might be at the turning point in his career where he regularly appears in the Ron Mexico discussion. Evans statistically speaking has been an all out monster this season. Evans is currently 3rd in the SHL in FO% with 56.29% which is impressive for a Right Winger. He’s also 1st in goals scored and 8th in shooting percentage at 16.11%. When you adjust for time played per game Zach Evans’ 1.29 per 20 minutes ranks 1st in the SHL by .16, which is a significant margin. Evans also has 5 game winning goals, which has him tied for 2nd in the league. Evans has truly been magic on the ice this season and we will have to wait to see what he does next. If his production and his team’s production is any indication that will likely the be a 2nd consecutive Challenge Cup parade in a few weeks.
