With the playoffs just around the corner, what better time is there to tweak the play by play system?

We've been reading all of the discussions going on around the site right now concerning the PbP system, and we've decided to make a few changes to the system heading into the S40 Playoffs.

The new PbP system will be as follows:

Code:

-There will only be play by plays for the finals of each league
-Payout will be changed to 5 TPE + up to 3 bonus TPE per play by play
-The top 3 play by plays will receive payments of $5M, $3M, and $1M respectively (as chosen by the PbP Director)
-Members will be able to sign up for a chance at either an SMJHL or SHL play by play and either morning or evening sims, to be selected by random draw
-Games must be accepted within 4 hours of receiving the link, and must be started within 12.

If you haven't already jumped down to the comments section to curse my name, I'll go into more detail here to explain our thought processes behind these changes, from bottom to top.

We've adjusted the time to start PbPs in order to try and keep the playoffs moving. It's another area in which we can slightly trim the length of our offseasons, and after getting our actual offseason downtime as short as we can get it we're looking at the playoffs as the next place in which to trim a few days' time. As part of this we'll also be working with the PT team to try and find a way to decrease (or possibly eliminate) the breaks between rounds, which could potentially save us multiple days' time on its own.

A lot of people have been asking for a random draw for a few seasons now, and honestly it just makes sense. Everyone will be given a brief window prior to the finals where they can sign up for either the SMJHL or SHL PbP lotto, and winners will be assigned a game.

The payment system in general needed an overhaul, and considering we're giving out less games now we don't want to be giving people huge amounts of TPE outright, or giving no incentive to try and write a better PbP. For that reason, we've lowered the base payout and re-instituted TPE bonuses instead of monetary ones in order to try and encourage higher quality games. For the same reason, there will be monetary bonuses paid out to the top 3 PbPs. Right now this is entirely at the discretion of the PbP director, but after this season we can re-evaluate and see if this should be tweaked slightly to maybe give the viewers of PbPs some power in this decision-making process.

And of course, PbPs only for the finals. We talked about doing PbPs for all elimination games only (essentially only a change for the finals), but in the end the finals should be the biggest moment, the climax, of every season. So we've gone this route, to give the four teams competing for their respective moments every chance to shine in the spotlight.

Also, all of that having been said, Jepox has stepped down as the play by play head after a fraction of a season in the job (which also made this the perfect time for us to make changes). Press F to pay respects.

Pay is $2.5M per season, and your job is to do all the things I said you'd be doing in this thread - take signups, do the random assignments, coordinate game links and grade for bonuses at the end of the season. We won't be replacing the lost PbP TPE because this is going back to what the old TPE payments were, the payments of the last few seasons were an increase.

There's likely going to be changes to the PT system, but I need to talk with Pris further about that. We had some preliminary conversations just to make sure things were doable, but that's going to be a few days out still. Any TPE lost from changes there will be moved elsewhere, so that there is effectively no change in total TPE from the PT system, just how you earn it.
