With the conclusion of the S40 SHL season, I will have 10 full Universal Fantasy Index spreadsheets completed. I'm taking the milestone as an opportunity to start doing some all-time fantasy related media pieces that I've always wanted to do. The first, and probably foremost, is a new media piece, in which I rank everyone who participates in fantasy by their results and how good they are, based on the previous 10 seasons of data.

The nature of how I generate these scores should mean that this is a reoccurring piece, not a one off. I will revert to 5 or 6 season rankings instead in the future, however; I'm doing 10 for the first one largely to celebrate the fact that I have that much data to work off.

The formula for these rankings are as follows;

Qualified managers (those who have played at least 7 of the last 10 seasons) are ranked by their average fantasy score over that time, and their rank is their starting score. Treat it like a golf handicap; the lowest scoring manager is considered to be the best.

For each season a manager has missed, 3 is added to their score.
For each season a manager has won their group, 1 is deducted from their score.
For each season a manager has placed top 10 in the league, 2 is deducted from their score.
For each season a manager has placed 1st in the league, 6 is deducted from their score.
The final numbers are tie-broken by their average fantasy score once more.

On the 6 season sheet (which will become the norm from now on), qualified managers will require only 4 of the previous 6 seasons, and the adjustment scoring will be,

Commentary
Alright, now we're starting to look at people worth actually discussing in the ranks. That's no offense to anyone below #20; there's several people in there that are probably worth of at least some discussion, but I'm capping it at 20 people so it's not going to take me forever to do these every season. If you wanna earn a writeup, you better make the top 20.

Up first for this writeup, we've got Grapehead. His average isn't particularly inflated for where he sits, but at this point, he's mostly placed this high because of his performances in S31 and S32- or in other words, the two seasons that would be the next to be discarded (and will absolutely be discarded if I do a 6 season model instead). With only 1 group win since then and two abysmal seasons (1470.3, 1588.6), it's not looking like I'll be writing about him again anytime soon without a huge performance in S41. Battle on anyway, dude.

Commentary
Missing S40 didn't do much good for Bishop's rank- when I had only the S31-S39 data, he actually placed 11th overall. I hadn't thought of him at all when I first conceived of this, but his average isn't just a fluke of his 3rd overall league-wide placement in S37; he's had several good scores before, including a pair of top 20s that resulted in wins. Like Grapehead, however, some of his best performances are soon to be discarded, and he'll need to play again to keep up.

Commentary
Coming in at 18th overall is karlssens, an Edmonton veteran who benefits greatly from the ranking structure of starting with league-wide average scores. His last two seasons have been fairly forgettable, but despite not having any previous top 10 placements, he has no less than 5 finishes between 11th and 20th league-wide, and a 22nd as well to boot. What's keeping him down in these ranks? In what must be extraordinarily frustrating, he's only won his own group twice in those 6 excellent seasons. He's also the only person in the top 20 rankings of this list to have never quite achieved a top 10 league-wide spot. If he keeps getting good results, there's no reason to think he'll vanish from this list anytime soon- even if he still can't win the damn thing.

Commentary
At number 17, we run into the first previous league winner in our top 20- MP7. Don't let his average throw you off; it's weighed down by his lacklustre performances in S31, S33 and S34. Every season he's had since those three has been above that average figure, barring S40 which appears to have been ruined (like many others) by miserable seasons from players expected to do better (think Orlov). Anything but an unimaginably bad stinker would see him go up the rankings next season- he'll have two coming off the books.

Commentary
At number 16 we have goilers popping up, in the lucky position of having qualified just in time to make the list for this season. She's the first player from the top 10 average scoring players on this list, too, mostly being weighed down only by a lack of success compared to some of the players coming up, and a couple less pleasant recent seasons. That said, those seasons are still only in the 1550~ ballpark, so even when her early wins start expiring, don't expect to see her vanish just yet.

Is this a bit lower than you thought you'd be, Bonk? I certainly thought so. The problem is, for every great season you have, you turn around and have a shocker. You're the lowest ranking member of the 4 group wins or better club (7 others), and the lowest ranking member of the 3 top 10's or better club (6 others), and it's only those things that push you as high as this. The good news is that you're not falling out anytime soon, though, because most of your less successful seasons were at the start of this timeframe, and I don't see you somehow never doing well again. Stay awake, stay alert, and start climing.

Commentary
Down to number 14, we've got Calgary Dragons stalwart Insayne. His average is good, but it's fairly heavily inflated by the power of that single 2nd overall season, which is also the second best season that anyone's ever had on my records. Outside of that, Insayne only has two other seasons above his average; the rest of them aren't even close, and without winning a few soon he'll quickly fall out of not just the top 20, but maybe even the top 50.

Commentary
Another player that only holds his rank by a thread is ThatDamnWalrus. If he'd played all of the previous 3 seasons, he'd probably be top 10 simply thanks to avoiding the penalties for missed seasons. Instead, his two singular group wins (both top 10s) are going to be fading away soon, and in the event of a switch to a 6 season model, he automatically won't qualify in the first place. His average rank is indicative of the fact that he can actually play, though- so if he starts playing actively again, expect to see him back on this list in the near future.

Commentary
Coming in at number 12 is veteran player Lunaro. His skill should be evident alone from the fact that he managed to win his group this season without the presence of Chris York, although the guy in group 13 who did pick Chris York kind of screwed himself by picking Forsberg and Leetch and replacing neither. Surprisingly, this season's 1779.2 is his best performance yet; but even when he doesn't win, he usually places a close 2nd or 3rd. His average should be quite stable, and even if he doesn't challenge for a top 10 spot, he won't be going away anytime soon.

Commentary
JR95 is the highest player on this list that I wasn't expecting to see near the top in at least some fashion. That's not to say I thought he was bad; I just hadn't thought of him at all. Outside of the single top 10 appearance, he has three more finishes between 11 and 20, and hasn't really had any bad ones, either- in fact, his worst finish was 1595.9, which is the 4th best among worst finishes on this list. If he'd not missed 2 seasons, he'd be top 10, and he's consistent enough that I'd expect to see him there soon if he keeps playing.

So how high did people think I'd actually come, out of interest? I wasn't expecting any higher than here, but that's because I know how many wins I have. I have a single 11th place finish, too, but being 10th would have only narrowly nudged me ahead of the next person on the list on average score alone. I don't think I'm falling away anytime soon, but getting ahead will require some truly epic performances, because we're reaching the base of the actual mountain of excellence now. It's time for one of the really great players out there. Baelor Swift has 3 wins, and 3 top 10 placements, and I'm surprised he's not got more than that. Some disappointing seasons have masked his success, but even when he screws up, he usually still salvages a few TPE. He's also in the helpful position where his two worst seasons on record are his two oldest seasons on record- so he needs to merely not stuff it up to improve his average score in the future. A genuine threat in any group.

Commentary
Having had the unpleasant experience of having to share the same group as WoZy twice in a row, I can safely assure you that he belongs this high on the list. He's the highest placing team manager that hasn't played the full 10 seasons, and in all but two of those seasons, he placed top twenty. Checking them both individually, I can see that in S36, he suffered due to generally bad picking, but in his one really bad season (S39), he was suffocated by the fact that he had to share his group with myself... and JR95... and two others who are ranked even higher on this list. Stay safe out there, there's some real monsters you can run into.

The funny thing is, even if WoZy had played all 10 seasons considered here (two of them before he joined the site), he'd probably still only be 6th. This is because we have now truly reached the mountain. From here on out, there are no more flukes; there are very few mistakes, and the number of lost seasons are far and few between. Here are those who have a serious crack at the top spot in the future.

Coming in at number 6 is the S40 season champion ToeDragon. Even without winning it all, he'd have come up pretty strongly; he has two other top 10 finishes and a 12th to boot. All of his worst performances are right when he started playing fantasy, so he's supercharged and ready to make a long term campaign for #1. Expect him to keep rising as the people above him with league-wide victories see their older efforts expire.

If you had put a gun to my head before I'd started assembling data and asked me to name the person I figured was most likely to finish number one in these rankings, I would have said Velevra. If there's a shock to me in the top 10, it's that he's only finished 5th. When Velevra makes a pick, I pay attention. I'd be super bummed if I was him; he was looking like coming 1st league-wide in S40 all season long, and if it wasn't for ToeDragon's swap only being processed on the second to last day, I expect he would have done more to attempt to protect that lead. If he had pulled out the win, he'd be in the box seat to dominate these rankings for many seasons to come.

Velevra has placed in the top 10 on 2 occasions, between 11 and 20th on 3 occasions, and between 21st and 25th on 3 more occasions. Even knowing who lies ahead as I write this, I still think Velevra is the player I'd least like to share a group with. He just flat out never seems to miss, and with only one of his last 6 seasons below his average, he's going to get scarier and scarier.

Commentary
Brass Bonanza plays
The Master Fantasy Whisperer enters the room, coming in at 4th overall in the league. Like Bonk, his adjusted fantasy rank is only this low because he's had some awful seasons in the past that drag his original average down the ranks; but the 3 top 10s and the league-wide victory are more than enough to keep him buoyed in the top 5 of the league. He's also got the (unscored) feather in his cap of having the 3rd highest fantasy score of all time, thanks to his truly brutal season in S33 where he managed to draft all of the three best players in the league that season (Theo Kane at 404.6, Alonzo Garbanzo at 401.8, Big Manious at 365.3).

The tricky part for him seems to be converting all of his knowledge and thought into results; he has the worst average group result (3.50) in the top 10, and you have go to all the way down to 15th to find someone lower, who turns out to be Bonk at 3.60. I'm not sure why he's had so much bad luck- but an enterprising individual could always go back through the Big Slappy Hour podcasts to find out, as they usually take the time to talk about both who they grab, and how it went after the season is over.

Don't ever fuck with this guy. Sarmo is the only player on this list to have never placed outside of the top 3. Anything short of either winning his group or finishing a close second is considered a disaster for him. He's never won the whole league, and he's only got a pair of top 10's, but that's very deceptive; he has 3 results in the 11-20 range, 3 more in the 21-30 range, and his worst result of the rest was 43rd overall, which was still good for 2nd place in his S38 group. The end result of this crushing consistency is that he's one of only two players to have an average group result of higher than second (1.80), and a very fitting title in the form of having the best average league result of this entire list (20.30). He's the highest ranking player on this list to not have a league-wide victory, but he missed out on one of these by just 0.9 points in S34 against the second ranked player on this list. He also has the second highest TPE won, which at 69, is... nice.

I wouldn't be surprised if Raymond3000 knows just about everything there is to know about SHL fantasy. He hasn't just been playing (and playing very well) for all 10 seasons; he's also one of the longest standing fantasy group managers, stretching back since well before I first came to the site. He uses this scary knowledge to shark the fantasy pools, with only a single blemish in S36 preventing him from earning TPE due to completely buggering up his swap that year.

I consider him unlucky to only have 4 group victories; he placed 17th and 18th in S40 and S39, but somehow missed out on first place both times by less than 10 points. I'd express a similar sentiment for his S32 campaign (24th in the league yet only 4th in his group), but he did share that group with Velevra (who also only placed 3rd), and deeply screwed up when he let one of Flacko and Garbanzo slip past him in the second round of the draft.

Commentary
The highest average fantasy score over the last 10 seasons (1,732.94). The highest group rank (1.40), the most group wins (8, and missing his 9th this season by less than 10 points), the most top 10 placements (4, and an 11th to boot), the most TPE won by anyone (86/100). Not only does Kylrad also have the best fantasy score ever recorded, a 1949.8 through the power of Garbanzo, Randleman and Dover in S35; he also has the highest worst ever score in this league- a 1640.45, which is still higher than the average scores of all but 22 people on this list.

Remember earlier, when I was talking about how me, WoZy and JR95 were stuck in a group with two other people in the top 10? He won that group. Even switching to my sheet for the 6 season model doesn't dislodge Kylrad from his throne, despite his only two non-wins still being in that timeframe. If you remove his S35 league-wide victory from the data next season, he does drop from the top rank; but he'll be able to spend S41 defending his crown, too.
