Drunken pre-draft thoughts
#1

I don't like to brag. Anyone who knows me would probably agree with that sentiment - to a point at least. If I've earned something you're damn right I'm going to be at least a little proud. That said, with the top 5 now determined for the SHL draft, I wanted to give my thoughts on each of the teams.

I don't see myself falling out of the top 5 in this draft, and I like to think that most would agree with that statement thus far. All the mock drafts and projections I've seen (or at least the ones I remember) backs that up, so I'm believing it for the time being. Does that torpedo my stock? Drunk Alex Andani don't give a fuck. For all you know I'm trying to torpedo my way to Winnipeg...

1. Buffalo Stampede Stampede

At first glance of the roster, I see exactly one Center. I don't know if some of the wingers are masquerading as centers or not, but it sure looks like C is a concern to WBF and 44. Do I know for sure? No way. But it sure looks that way to me, at least with my minimal knowledge of Buffalo farm system.

I see that WiC/Conor McGregor was taken with the top pick last draft and holy fuck does that look appealing to me. Conor McGregor and Alex Andani as a one-two punch down the middle? Shit, that's some Crosby-Malkin looking nonsense right there. Of course it'd probably be a while before we start lighting it up, but it's a neat thought. Totally on board with Buffalo. Plus WBF is a Blue Jackets fan so it'd be fun spamming the LR with CBJ memes as we lose to Pittsburgh in the first round next year. 😂🔫

2. New England Wolfpack Wolfpack

New England hit the fucking jackpot by getting Seattle's pick this draft and now gets to add a top prospect whilst still in playoff contention, or at least it looks that way to me. I don't know what their contracts are like to be perfectly honest. What I do know, however, are a number of people on their team at the moment. Toivo and Evok for starters, quite a few interactions with them already in GOMHL as fellow GMs but not so much here. I hold them in high regard personally. And then there's the guys I know of, but they probably don't know me, yet. Raven, Storm, Eggy, drodg, Jenny all guys/girl I can respect from what I've seen across the two leagues I'm in.

From a playing standpoint, going to New England let's me stay down in the J for a little longer than I probably would with a team that is looking to get younger immediately. Andani hasn't hit his potential down there yet, and I'm interested to see how a full season at 350 goes with Kristaps Ball on my wing. Am I certain I'll get to see that? Not at all. Would be neat though. I've accepted the fact that we're probably being separated through the draft, so I'm just hoping we land in places we can succeed.

3. Toronto North Stars Stars

If I'm being honest, I don't see myself going to Toronto at this time. While their current roster looks like they require help at center, and don't get me wrong I want to be a teams number 1 center, I find myself not as enthusiastic about a team in which I don't really know anyone on. I do know who Symmetrik is though, and I'm honestly not sure how he thinks of me after the S18(?) GOMHL draft. I certainly don't have a problem with you, bro, and I have no issues coming to Toronto if you want me. That said, I feel as if you're looking at the other players more than myself, which is totally fine. I am a rookie after all. I'll still play for you.

Just looking at the teams prospects is enough to get me excited about playing in Toronto; Kraaijkamp and Lokitonov are going to be key pieces on the wings moving forward, not to mention some of the blue line prospects they have coming up. There's a good core there I'd be happy to join.

4. Manhattan Rage Rage

I find myself comparing Manhattan with Toronto from a social standpoint, simply because I don't really know anyone on their staff. JY seems like a top bloke though, so I don't foresee any blaring issues with the team. I'm pretty easy-going, and while I'm giving these opinions, I'll definitely be giving the team I go to a fair shake before deciding my future. I don't plan to hop between teams, but things can certainly change. If I like where I'm at, what's the point in leaving?

From a player point of view, I recall them just coming off a Challenge Cup two seasons ago, so they definitely have a capable staff who knows how to win. That said, I think it's fair to say they've taken a step back since winning the cup. It's not surprising to me that they've made the decision to get younger since achieving their goal of winning the cup, it's something I would probably do if I were GM. I also like the idea of joining a team going through a rebuild/retooling stage since it would give me the time to develop while not overburdening the team with an inferior player. And I'd likely become the franchise center I want to be. So that's super appealing.

5. Los Angeles Panthers Panthers

I view LA similarly to New England. I know people on the team and I think I'd mesh pretty well with their locker room. They also have a nice set of prospects coming through the ranks at the moment, so while I may or may not be the franchise center I want to be with LA, they'd have an awesome core that I would only bolster with my defensive play.

Just looking at their prospects now and man, it looks like they drafted really, really well over the past few seasons. My teammate Glyc went to them in S38, so there'll be a familiar face there at least. Six guys from S39 alone and all of them look decent from first glance; four of them are active too - damn. And then they did great last season too - yeah one of the pick ups was their GM but they landed one of the Federation Heads in Chocula which is quite encouraging to see. I'd be content if I fell to LA.

And as for Winnipeg - and I now understand they aren't even in the first round - this is all I have to say:
