It's the responsibilities of GMs to do what's best for their teams, and throwing away a pick is not that. You were never gonna get a 2nd out of Samee, certainly not after you just pissed him off by taking his player.

IIRC having been close with JT at the time, JT literally went and messaged GMs picking before. He didn't say he'd retire or anything, there were no threats to be had. You're looking for them to help you. So he asked them to pass. It may not have been every GM exactly, but I remember him reaching out to a lot of them to say he promises to take his own player with his first available pick and simply doesn't have an earlier opportunity and if he doesn't pick himself, they're free to take him. He wasn't threatening people he'd retire and trying to be big and tough about it, he went with his tail between his legs knowing what the possibilities were.

I think that there is a massive difference in that, expecting the rest of your GMs to play nice -- on what at the end of the day is an unfortunate mistake from SEA management (when Rice stepped down and named Samee as interim). Passing on yourself twice, knowing that other teams could select your player is (to me) taking the other GMs for granted and really asking for a lot. You have 26 other minds to think about when you pass on your player and let more picks go by. Was it a harsh move from NEW? Yes, but there was a lot that Samee could have done in order to get his player back, or prevent the entire situation from happening since he did not find out as a spurt of the moment thing.

I think NEW offering a 5th plus his player for a 5th is as good as it's going to get. Samee looks like an idiot for losing 2 months of his time, NEW looks like a harsh organisation. It's not a bright situation for the league as a whole, but I don't think that the GMs of NEW are in the wrong for selecting his player, as he was warned multiple times that his player would be selected.

It's a rough situation all around but those are just my $0.02.

Yeah, that's the most comparable situation, and no one else took his player. Everyone else respected that he was following the co-GM rule of using his earliest 2nd rounder, which by all signs, Samee was going to do.

At that point offering anything was too late, Samee had already retired and was going to lose TPE, there's no point in doing it, follow through and start a new player and take your free player.

Samee may have been warned, but he pretty clearly warned everybody that he would retire if he wasn't picked by anyone else.

If he had passed with his earliest 2nd, I would been fine with this, that's on him for not following the co-GM protocol. I don't agree with other teams trying to force Samee to use a 1st on himself because he's young and they think he'll fall for it.
