As far as this larger topic, I just think we need to be careful to not become too rigidly authoritarian around here. Some individual expression, even if It offends someone else, should be permitted. Hate speech is a very, very broad category. Let's be careful to keep the spirit of free speech alive and well around the site. Kinder and gentler is a great way to live, but should not be mandated, especially when there is no agreement as to what exactly that means.

I haven't used a single meme here, shitty or not, thank you. The majority of the "criticism" in here has been calling the rule change, as well as other people retarded, so that isn't very constructive, so excuse me for not responding in a serious tone until now.

It's also 5 am for me so excuse me for not taking the time going deeper into this. I don't see joking about disabilities as anything different than joking about race, religion or sexual preferences. I think it's a good add to the set rules to include these types of remarks so pubishments can be given out if someone goes to far.

Which leads me to what you asked before, what is going too far, what will render in a punishment? We haven't given out a punishment so far, so there is no example yet, simple as that. The closest thing i think is the Logan thing earlier where he baited people to come at him by calling them "autistic fucks", amongst other things, though that was not the only reason he was punished.

I don't see people having to be too worried, i'd say it's more of an add so that if someone goes off too bad we have the same options as if someone were, as an example, being racist or homophobic.

I feel that this site should be a site where people can feel good and enjoy some fake hockey, i don't see why we need as many ways as possible to be dicks to each other, calling people on the ice shit like that can and do render in penalties, i dont see why it cant be that way here too.

In my honest opinion if people feel that it's more important to be able to be as hateful as possible towards people than enjoying the fake hockey we're doing here, then i dont see it as too much of a loss if they leave tbh.

Sure, there could have been a clarification of whats allowed and not, but hate speech was mentioned more than once, so if it can be considered as such by someone then we can look at it.

In my opinion policing speech has never worked very well in this league, I've been involved in similar rule changes and disciplinary decisions in the past and the results weren't exactly positive. Maybe we've gone about it wrong and all it needs is a slightly adjusted approach, but banning certain expressions has usually backfired as it mostly just makes people defiant and they start trolling and using these words "jokingly" out of spite. And while I think that most people who complain about "censorship" in here are blowing things way out of proportion, there certainly are quite a few possible problems that come with vague "hate speech" rules.

With that being said, I understand the general sentiment behind this rule and think it's fucking sad that the people in charge deem it necessary to implement something like this because some members can't show basic human decency and be somewhat friendly to each other. If you look at how some people conduct themselves around these boards, it's not surprising that prominent members question whether our current rules are sufficient. Especially considering that there have been way fewer suspensions for forum transgressions recently than there were a few years ago - and arguably this leniency hasn't improved the atmosphere at all, it feels more like it had the opposite effect sometimes and that it might be time to tighten the screws again.

I feel like the lowered number of suspensions hasnâ€™t really came from more relaxed rules but rather less visibility because of the way activity has moved to discord over time. You canâ€™t just click a report button on a discord post, and even the league owners donâ€™t have access to every single SHL related discord. And I think that movement originally occured because of unnessecery suspensions and word policing back in the day, I can think of a few examples of suspensions that received a ton of backlash.
