After some experimentation, I've found that following these rankings season to season is more interesting if we,
A; only track a year's worth of seasons (the previous six), so that changes are significant from season to season, and,
B; improve the detail of scoring for high scores for a season in general.

The formula for these rankings are as follows;

Qualified managers (those who have played at least 4 of the last 6 seasons) are ranked by their average fantasy score over that time, and their rank is their starting score. Treat it like a golf handicap; the lowest scoring manager is considered to be the best.

For each season a manager has missed, 4 is added to their score.
For each season a manager has won their group, 3 is deducted from their score.
For each season a manager has placed top 25 in the league, 1 is deducted from their score.
For each season a manager has placed top 10 in the league, 2 (3) is deducted from their score.
For each season a manager has placed top 5 in the league, 2 (5) is deducted from their score.
For each season a manager has placed 1st in the league, 5 (10) is deducted from their score.
The final numbers are tie-broken by their average fantasy score once more.

The previous seasons of 35-40 are being recalculated, and will be posted in here before I commence with the new ones. You will find that even in the upper ranks, they have been sigificantly shuffled; having top 25 and top 5 efforts better recognized is greatly helpful for some participants.

HEAD OFFICE ARE A BUNCH OF NERDS

So if you're wondering why it's taken me so long to get back to this, it's because I said I'd talk about how last season's rankings looked underneath the new system. There's not much to say. Essentially, if you specifically had top 5 placements, or had top 25 placements, you came out a little better. Several people had little bumps, and one or two had significant ones (Bonk, who's had plenty of success but not so much on his actual average scores).

What will be more interesting is the ranks coming up, and how they'll differ from last seasons ranks. What everyone has to remember is that it's not just the new season's scores that are coming in that matter- they're only half the story. The other half of the story is the season that's leaving consideration. There are some people who are going to take huge knocks to their places, because they did badly this season but killed it in season 35, and are thus replacing a really good season with a really bad season. There are also some people who are going to suddenly get big bump ups, because they did really well this season and either didn't play or played horribly in season 35. This wasn't entirely intended, and I'm wondering if there's a way to dampen the effect, by making older seasons count for less over time (the average scores, at least) instead of suddenly losing them.

I'll certainly say that the new version of the ranks are much narrower up the top end compared to before- Kylrad especially has had his lead eaten away. This isn't surprising; the reality is, Kylrad's empire has been crumbling since roughly when the universal fantasy index came in- yes, this means that the further you go back, the bigger it actually is. From S36 to S31, for example, Kylrad was at an utterly ridiculous -38, with sarmo's -17 the only other fantasy player within a country mile. With an abysmal 8th placement this season, and his leaguewide 1st overall now leaving consideration, he's doomed to fall from the top of these ranks.

Presumably, he's not getting the benefits of all the research he must have put in hard yards for himself that now many people can access much quicker alone, and it's been harder to win off that stuff alone instead of thinking deeper about line combinations and whatnot. The same factor has hurt other veterans too, but most of the top names right now are veterans too- raymond3000, sarmo, Velevra and Baelor Swift have all been around significantly longer than myself, and don't seem to have been affected too badly by the universal fantasy index themselves.

Commentary
ALRIGHT. I know I said I'm only gonna talk about people in the top 20, but I can't just turn around and completely gloss over this. I earlier talked about the fact that high ranked people who had great seasons in S35 were at risk, especially if they had trash seasons in S41. Here's someone who wound up having exactly that. This season, Slappy had a particularly rough go of it- 1637.4 score, a 7th place finish in his group, and 86th overall in the league.

This replaces his best season from the existing rankings- 1829.2 score, 1st in his group, and 7th overall. This knocks his average score down from 1,694.04, 14th best in the league, to 1,662.08, 34th in the league. It's a deeply competitive range, and a drop like that really hurts. With a further loss of 6 points from bonuses to that average score rank, this kills the Slappydoodle. With a lack of recent consistency, and both of his remaining above-average seasons set to leave consideration before his three worst seasons, he'll need to kick an awful lot of arse to start climbing again anytime soon.

Commentary
Another massive drop that I can't ignore. Bonk, score wise, did alright; 1714 points, even though he didn't get any TPE out of it. But the season leaving was 1819.25 points, a group win, and a top 10 (10th). The drop in average score is only 17 points (1,681.59 to 1664.05), but it's a brutally tight competition, and it costs him 16 positions in the average score ranks. His success sticks out like a sore thumb on the table.

Unlike Slappydoodle, however, who has 4 seasons below his average being held up by 2 good ones, Bonk is in the position of having 4 above average seasons being weighed down by one below average one, and one abysmal one. This is a good thing for him, because the below average one is the next one to go, and the track record gives hope of him coming back with more good, 1700+ point results in the future; but it's also a bad thing, because he could continue to fall even further if he doesn't perform, especially four months from now when another league wide top 10 expires. He's stuck with the really awful one for a while, though.

Commentary
Oof. Here's the most extreme example of such a collapse. The season going out was the best fantasy season by anyone ever we have on record; 1949.8 points, the league wide leader in season 35. Replacing it was a 1529.3 point season, the bottom of his group. This is a 70 point average fantasy score collapse, and it is the end of the empire; despite his TPE earnings from the group level competition still being in the elite tier (36 points), his best league wide results are now all gone. He is, in fact, the highest ranking participant on this list to have only finished in the league top 10 once in the previous 6 seasons. He has 3 seasons above his current average, but they all expire before this disaster. Goodbye, Kylrad. At least you got a little bit of credit for just how ridiculously good you used to be.

Commentary
Starting off the original top 20, we have kckolbe, a new talent coming through and making a name for himself with pretty damn good results right out of the gate- his first two seasons were top 25 league wide, and his 3rd was a top 10, meaning that upon the completion of his 4th season, he entered these rankings jumping straight into the top 20. Unfortunately, this season was quite forgettable, cutting his average score rank from 8th to 15th overall. The fact that no previous season has expired, and that he automatically drops a 4 point penalty from being only 1 season short of the full 6 instead of 2, has ensured he hasn't quite tipped out of the top 20; but his presence isn't that precarious; just playing sheds another 4 point penalty next season, and all the nearby talent who could reel him in will either be defending big  season 36 scores themselves, or haven't signed up to play in season 42.

Commentary
Taking a big leap into the top 20 is QuantumCowboy. Starting out back in the day as a pretty miserably average fantasy participant at best, he really started to get his shit together from S37 onwards, and between S38 and S40 onwards, posted 3 different top 20 results, including 2 group wins. This season was not a continuation of that trend, but a still very respectable 1721.7 points replaces a 1546.2 point season, good for an average score rank bump from 32nd overall (1,654.14) to 18th (1683.39). Another shoddy season being shed next season gives him room to rise further again next time, even if he again doesn't pick up any bonus points.

Commentary
Also making a fairly hefty jump is newcomer to the top 20, Rich. Like QuantumCowboy, Rich seems to have finally figured out how SHL fantasy works right in time for the S37 draft; before then, he'd not won much TPE, but after then, he had 3 top 25 placements in a row, including two group victories. He didn't win this time, and he just missed out on yet another top 25 spot, but he replaced a fairly forgettable effort in S35 (1579.95 points, 5th place) with a much stronger outing this time, catapulting him 13 places up the average score ranks to 16th. His worst remaining season on record is also the next season to go, so another 1700+ point outing could easily push him into the top 10 next season. Watch out for this guy.

Commentary
Gooney had a good season in S41. He had the league-wide victory back in season 38. Nothing else particularly excites me about his fantasy performances. If he was paying loads of attention, he could probably kill it and chase down the top 10, but that's not how Gooney rolls. I honestly couldn't tell you what to expect from him- even the season going out is unhelpful, being the closest one he has to his current average score. All of this feels awfully unfair to say, because his average fantasy score jumped something like 50 points this season- he shedded his worst season on record for a top 25 finish. But he's got so many other middling outings that it doesn't quite feel like he belongs up here. When the league-wide victory is gone, he probably won't come up on these rankings again.

RomanesEuntDomus is a lucky guy. Despite losing 10 points off his average fantasy score this season, he somehow retained the same average score rank as before- 17th place. He also replaced a 28th overall league-wide and 2nd in his group finish with a 25th overall league-wide and 2nd in his group finish, good for 1 extra adjustment point. Unfortunately, he still slid a position on these rankings, but his next performance to leave contention was a shocker, so he'll be sticking around.

Commentary
Artermis is a unicorn. He is, by far, the absolute unluckiest player on these rankings. When a 1686.8 point season, 44th in the league doesn't get me 1st in the group, I'd understand. When 1773.6 and 28th in the league in a high scoring season is off the mark, I'd be a little miffed, but I'd get it. When 1738.55 and 19th in the league misses out, I'd feel justified in being kinda robbed, and when 1792.9 and 3rd overall in the league still isn't enough to win my friggin' group, I would probably cry. Artermis has the 11th highest average score ranking, that average score being 1,703.39 points, and has not won his group in the last 6 seasons. The next highest player to have somehow never managed that is MWHazard, a participant without any bonus points at all on these rankings, all the way back in 41st position. Satan, if you're capable of good deeds, give this man an easy group in season 42.

Despite his league wide victory in season 37, and another top 10 placement in season 39, I'm not the slighest bit sold on Mook. Those two results prop up an otherwise mediocre history for this player. He'll go up a bit again next season purely because his season 36 scores were crap, but once that league wide victory is out of contention, it's the last we'll see of him.

Commentary
Bzerkap stormed into fantasy relevance in his first season of participation; a 5th overall league-wide finish in season 37. He's not managed to win his group since, but he's never embarrassed himself either; of his 5 performances, only two were below his average, and only one of those significantly below; and when your worst effort is a 1609.8 point 2nd place finish, who's going to judge? He should easily push his ALR into the negatives next season and potentially threaten for top 5 on the average fantasy score side, but after that, he faces a reckoning; that first season will very soon no longer count. Two performances above 1700 points should carry him over.

Commentary
Ghost is another player who initially leaves me thinking that his presence at 12th on this list is an aberration caused by a single exceptionally high result; but that's not entirely true. Remember, this list starts off by ranking everyone's average score, not just the results. Ghost's average fantasy score is 1693.6; and four of his six efforts are higher than that. If anything, he's actually kind of unlucky; his one big season where he was 4th in the league was in a season of significantly lower than average scores all round. With both performances since above 1700, he's a good chance of staying in the high rankings, even after that really big season is out of consideration.

Coming in at 11th overall is everyone's favourite Coach... Izzy. Mike Biz. Mike... uh, Coach, uh, nevermind. He's 11th. Mike Izzy came barrelling up these rankings, thanks to placing 5th overall league-wide this season, which also involved a 48 point average fantasy score boost. He's technically in the same kind of position that Mook and Gooney are in, with one great result propping up the others; but Izzy is in the advantageous position of having all of those rubbish results leaving contention before his good seasons will. Make the most of it, Coach!

Another enormous slingshot manoeuvre has been performed by Tylar, who dumped an appalling 1490.5 point performance in S35 for a 1779.5 point effort in S41. This lets him leverage that fancy 2nd overall league-wide performance he got back in S39 for mad ranks. He won't stay in the top 10 long, though, because he's got two very good performances falling out soon.

First up on the list of true crazies is TheWoZy. This season, he's posted his best score on record; this is extremely helpful for him, because on the way out was... his previous best score on record. This format of ranking makes it damn hard to defend your rank when you have a really high score going out (in this case, 1784.2, 1st in group and 13th in the league), so when you manage to do it... (1815.9, 1st in group, 17th in the league), many kudos to you, sir. WoZy even gets a 5 point average fantasy score rank boost out of it, and climbs from 12th place to 9th place. He would likely be even higher on these ranks, if he hadn't been regularly required to face off against other people already ahead of him.

Commentary
So I thought I was going to take a big hit on these rankings myself. Going up one is a pleasant surprise. I knew I was replacing a close 2nd place finish in my group with a season where I was about to barely win TPE, but it turns out even barely winning TPE was still slightly above my average, and 40 points better than the season that was going away. Go figure. I'm hoping to start climbing into the top 5, but that's not going to happen without a top 5 league-wide finish. Right now, I'm the highest guy on the list without such a thing. Better do something about that.

ThatDamnMcJesus is kind of permanently crimped on these rankings- missing out on a season so recently hurts. But his pedigree still shows. 1654.6 is still the second best "worst" outing in SHL fantasy on these rankings, and he's got 2 top 10 finishes. If he missed this season too, he might even remain in the top 10 from that sparkling average alone. Fortunately for him, he's not, and he's in a group with absolutely nobody else in the top 50. Go push that average even higher, Hallsy.

Commentary
Losing 3 positions sucks for one of the true greats of SHL fantasy. Out goes a group victory and top 25 placement, in comes a season to forget. It's not all bad- Velevra is still clearly one of the most dangerous people to play. He's the only guy with 4 group victories in the last 6 seasons, he has the equal second most TPE won in SHL fantasy, and his bonus points are second only to the guy who's about to be announced as the new best SHL fantasy player. He should jump back up again quickly; his only other shitty season in contention is the season that's about to stop counting towards these ranks in 2 months. Only 11 points short of 1st place means he's an outside chance for attaining that place himself.

Commentary
For the first time in a long time, MP7 hasn't been able to make huge gains in this list (let me explain- I have about 3 sets of data from before I started publishing, and MP7 started rather low). It's not a huge surprise; this time, he's got a very good season being replaced by only a slightly better one. MP7 is the highest name on this list that doesn't have at least 4 top 25 placements. The first overall score boost is a lot, but only finishing 2nd in S39 would still put him 5th this season on this list. Next time around, he loses another rubbish season, so another jump is perfectly possible, and a top 5 finish will put him in #1 contention as well.

Commentary
Baelor made another very impressive performance this season; it was his second above 1800 points in the last 6 seasons, made much harder by having to share his group with the lethal Velevra (usually a death sentence for mere mortal players). If not for the miserable luck of having a pair of top 5 finishes in seasons where the top scores were less high than usual, he'd probably be in 2nd by virtue of the higher average score rank alone. But he's got trouble ahead- both of those top 5 placements are out within 6 months. He'll need to absolutely kill it to hold onto this particularly lofty perch.

Sarmo, by several metrics, could be considered the very best fantasy participant in the SHL right now. He has the highest average fantasy score rank; he has the highest average league rank; he has the highest average group rank. He's won more TPE than anyone else (41, squeezing out Velevra and raymond3000 at 40). His "worst" score on record is the highest "worst" score of anyone- 1676.2 by itself would be good for the 26th best average fantasy score right now. That's his worst score. He's in a very tiny little club of people who have never had a single bad season in the last 6 seasons, and he's unlucky to not be higher.

In 2nd overall on these ranks, we have raymond3000, who kind of terrifies me. In a season that was oftentimes forgettable for the people up in the very top ranks, he was the only person in last season's top 20 to place in the top 10. He has just two seasons of the last 6 where he didn't place top 25 in the league... and those are the two seasons to next leave contention. In fact, his only forgettable season will be the next season to leave contention. If there's going to be a lead change in the next instalment of these ranks, it'll almost certainly be raymond3000 sitting at the top of the pile.

Finally, the number one is here- it's ToeDragon84. Despite not having a particularly magical season this time around, it was still better than the season it was replacing by about 50 points, without losing any score adjustments on the way. The three previous participants above him- Velevra, Baelor Swift and Kylrad, all lost between a couple and a squillion points. Unless raymond3000 squishes him as suggested might be possible before, ToeDragon should hold onto this spot for some time; the league-wide victory helping to pin him to contention is very recent and won't be going away anytime soon.
