PGS Game 60: St. Louis vs Detroit
#1

Scarecrows St. Louis (0) vs (4) Detroit Falcons
Day 29 Game 60

Coming into tonight’s matchup we saw the St. Louis Scarecrows coming into town to face off against the Detroit Falcons. The game could easily be penned as the battle of the basement with a third of the season already underway.  St. Louis with a record of 4-7-3 and Detroit 4-9-3. Both of these teams will be looking to capitalize on tonight and start a run to climb back into the playoffs.

1st Period:

Detroit came out of the opening faceoff with a determined approach, beating the St. Louis players to the corners and winning puck battles. The Scarecrows manage to make it out of the first 10 minutes without conceding. Catching up towards the end of the first period, Detroit on the power play continues to put shots on net. David Fantobens with the quick shot missing the net, the puck bounces off the corner boards to Wolfhard Richter he take it to the net, shoots, the puck trickles over the line! 1-0 Detroit 16:10 of the first period.

Wolfhard Richter 6 (David Fantobens 1, Marc Palicka 6) at 16:10 (PP)

Last minute power play with a draw in the Scarecrows end. Jack Daniels wins the faceoff clean to Vladislav Konstantin, he takes one stride off the circle and rips it top shelf to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead at 19:27 of the first period. Detroit 2/3 on the PP and 1/1 on the PK with St. Louis 0/1 on the PP and 1/3 on the PK.

Vladislav Konstantin 3 (Marc Palicka 7, Tig Murphy 5) at 19:27 (PP)

2nd Period:

The second period didn’t have much to write home about. We saw the Falcons offense taper off as both teams struggled to get much offense going. Detroit with a couple undisciplined penalties but nothing came of them. The period draws to an end shots 4 for Detroit and 5 for St. Louis. Detroit 2/2 on the PK and STL 0/2 on the PP.

3rd Period:

Detroit comes back out in this period flying, outskating their opposition and forcing turnovers. Some desperation plays as St. Louis scrambles in their own end, and find themselves on the penalty kill for an interference minor. 30 seconds left in Detroit’s penalty, Lightning Jones shoots the puck wide of the net but, Konstantin buzzing around the boards picks it up, he circles the net and lets a quick snap shot off it’s in the net! Konstantin with his second of the night and Detroit is up 3-0 at 15:26 of the third period.

Vladislav Konstantin celebrates after a power play goal at 15:26

Minutes later Detroit on another power play due to delay of game, Tig Murphy and Lightning Jones with the give and go as Murphy receives the puck and rips the shot, it beats the goalie five hole. Murphy with a power play goal at 17:21 of the third period.

Tig Murphy 1 (Lightning Jones 5, Flacko Lagerfield 4) at 17:21 (PP)

With that the game comes to an end, utter disappoint for St. Louis as their difficult season continues. Detroit leaves tonight with a bit of hope after an impressive performance. Cedric Robinson with the quiet 9 stop shutout, I don't think he even broke a sweat!

3 Stars

1: Vladislav Konstantin (DET)
2: Cedric Robinson (DET)
3: Tig Murphy (DET)

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into Ricky Weave's faulty 2-min high sticking penalty

It's late in first period and the situation above happens, seems pretty clear at first glace, it's a stick to the face! It might not be a "high" stick but a stick nonetheless.
But at a second glance we can see what really happened.

Take a look at the Falcons player the furthest back, he's actually whacking the Scarecrow players stick up so that it hit's his team mate, add to the fact that the Falcon player is almost pressing his face against the ice this is mostly a string of bad luck put together.

I think it's easy to understand why the ref called it has he did, but there should not have been any penalty here at all.

Welcome back to our Player of the Game segment for the recent matchup between the St. Louis Scarecrows and Detroit Falcons.

Tonight's choice could have gone either way, but we've decided to roll with Vladislav Konstantin for tonight's player of the game! Konstantin played an excellent game tonight with two goals on four of his total shots! His first goal came towards the end of the third period on the powerplay. The Falcons had some excellent puck movement and Konstantin was able to beat Friedrich Schmidt to put the Falcons up 2-0.

Vladislav Konstantin 3 (Marc Palicka 7, Tig Murphy 5) at 19:27 (PP)

Konstantin's second goal of the night also came from the powerplay! The second and third period were pretty quite. There weren't any goals from either team prior to Konstantin beating Schmidt from only feet away to bring the game to 3-0.

Vladislav Konstantin 4 (Pingy Pingu 6, Tobias Viklund 4) at 15:26 (PP)

The Scarecrows were unable to rally and the Falcons won this game 4-0.

Tonight on Harvey's Fail of the Game, we look at what happens when you want to act tough when maybe you shouldn't.

At the end of the second period of a game where the St.Louis Scarecrows were dramatically outshot and trailing 3-0, Gordie Maple decided he wanted to shake things up to try and spark his teammates. He went to Hypolact Asia and tried to start a fight with him, only Asia wasn't having it. Maple ended up embarrassing himself and putting his team on the penalty kill, where the Falcons powerplay updated their efficiency for the night from 3/3 to 4/4. Was Delay of the game the right call? It's not roughing since he didn't touch the opponent, it's not instigating since there was no fight, and yet the referees had to stop the game when the gloves were dropped, so a delaying call seems appropriate to me.

In today's game the Scarecrows of St. Louis traveled to Detroit to face the Falcons in a game which we saw a player put up 2 goals, both on the power play. That player is Vladislav Konstantin of the Detroit Falcons, who also earns the honor of being called the Barstool Player of the Game. His first goal came with just 33 Seconds left in the 1st period on a power play opportunity to put the Falcons up 2-0. Konstntin's second goal came in the last 5 minutes 3rd period after the Falcons had another power play opportunity. One could make the argument that the Falcons goalie, Cedric Robinson, could have been given the award seeing that he stopped all 19 of the shots that he faced but after putting up 2 goals you just cant give it to anybody else other than Vladislav Konstantin.

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

The Scarecrows came into Detroit tonight and were dominated by the Falcons en route to a 4-0 shutout. The Falcons' Marc Palicka. no stranger to this honor, is the Defensive forward of the game. Palicka's entire stat line was impressive tonight and really highlights the kind of player he is. Along with his 2 assists tonight, he was able to block one shot and register one hit. His performance at the faceoff dot continues to be impressive, winning 19 out of 26 contests. Palicka was a driving force for the Falcon's defense tonight leading to the low shot and zero goal night for the Scarecrows.

Game 60: St. Louis vs. Detroit
Scarecrows 0-4  Falcons

Rookie of the Game: Marca Palicka

Marca Palcka was far and away the best player on the ice this game, which is not surprising see as the game was very one sided. Palicka had a two point night consisting of two assists, the first being on the first goal of the game scored by Wolfhard Richter where he got the secondary assist, and his second point being just under three minutes later on a goal scored by Vladislav Konstantin, where Palicka got the primary assist. It is also worth mentioning that both of those goals were on a power play. The only other person to get two points this game was Detroit's defense man Tig Murphy, but I think Palicka gets a slight edge over Murphy just because of the amount of face-offs that he won. Palicka won 19/26 face-offs that he took, which is a very impressive 73% success rate, and I know ew have talked about how it's a hard league for a rookie center to come in and be successful at the dot, but most of the teams who have success in this league have star centers that can win face-offs for them.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

Another tough one for St. Louis, but they did not deserve to win this game. They were out-shot, out-hustled, and out-manned. It's only fitting to present our Bust of the Game Award to one of their own - Rowdy Smithers. As one of the only veterans on the squad, it's tough to see such a gem play a game like this. Smithers was invisible this game, even though he played close to 25 minutes and had 3 minutes on the power play. This isn't a guy playing 8 minutes a night and flying under the radar, this is an elite talent. This game speaks volumes about the season St. Louis has had - not being able to string together goals on the special teams, and veterans not clicking for whatever reason. Hopefully the end of the season brings some more luck to Rowdy and the boys in yellow.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Pingy Pingu

Pingy Pingu makes his very first appearance on the winners list this season. Hit five times over the course of the game, and coughing up the puck three of those times, Pingy was spotted with multiple bruises and contusions after the game. Clearly not a fan of the physical play Pingy would do well to work on his strength and puck handling this off season. The next time these two teams meet, I’m sure Pingy will be picked on again and again for his inability to handle the puck well under physical pressure.

1st period: 18 saves on 20 shots
2nd period: 4 saves on 4 shots
3rd period: 4 saves on 6 shots
Goalie grade: C-

Cedric Robinson (DET): 19 saves on 19 shots, 1.000 Save Percentage

Goalie of the Game: Cedric Robinson
The Falcons went hard during the first and struck 20 shots on the Crows' netminder, and though Robinson only saw 19 shots, a shutout is no small feat. A very impressive game and a coveted shutout for the Detroit goaltender.

Beatdown of the Week

Beatdown of the Week or Beatdown of the Weak? Either one works here as Detroit just demoralized St. Louis through three periods.

Schmidt had his work cut out for him in the first period facing 20 shots. He did well a) things considered before giving up two late power play goals. He is good but he can't carry a team.

Things slowed down dramatically in the second period as Detroit toom a breather. St. Louis managed 5 shots to Detroit's 4 but Robinson never looked stressed in goal.

Two more power play goals for Detroit in the third period sealed this one. St. Louis' penalty killing unit was atrocious stopping only one on four attempts. Bad night.
