PGS Game 54: Halifax Raiders vs Montreal Militia

Game 54: Halifax vs Montreal
raiders 2 -  Militia 4

We have two teams in the hunt for a playoff spot battling it out tonight. Neither club is one of the powerhouses which has a playoff spot locked down, and neither club is on the outside looking in. Should be a good one!

Period 1
The first period was a game of special teams. Halifax would be the first to flex their 5 on 4 muscle with Rasmus Rasmus taking a slashing penalty two minutes into the game. The Kovac brothers would connect as they often do, but this time Kyle Corbett was the one finishing it off, tic-tac-toe, and the Raiders take the 1-0 lead. Well Montreals special teams woke up after that, killing off their next penalty and then getting their own chance on the power player when Gruber took a hooking minor in the middle of the first frame. Viktor Valentine lets go a blast from the blue line and the game is knotted at ones going into the second.

Period Highlight: 2. Montreal Militia , Viktor Valentine 3 (Rahotep Tutankhamun 2) at 10:17 (PP)

Period 2

Before someone could tell the Raiders the period had started Montreal had already taken the lead. 6 seconds into the second and Rafe Ulrich springs Piotr Czerkawski for the break away and he catches the Raiders defence flat footed. The Raiders would get some jump to their game and begin pressing. Until 13:38 where a pair of unsung heros for the Raiders stepped up to tie the game. The defensively minded Mr. Faceoffs makes the nifty pass through traffic to a streaking Thomas Speardane jumping into the play. Speardane makes no mistake and the game is tied. But as Halifax did at the start they take their feet of the gas and less than a minute later Hudec scores for Montreal to restore the lead.

Period Highlight: 8:02 of 2nd period - Charlie Schieck is hit by Pierre Laroche-Durocher and loses puck.
[Image: cropped_ZacRinaldoHit.gif?ts=1396199392]

Period 3

We arrive at the all important third period. Halifax is down by one goal, and they jump out of the gates hot! Eager to kill off a late penalty taken in the second and to get back into this game. The Raiders are buzzing and looking good the first minute of the power play until....our....TSN TURNING POINT: All it took was one goal to completely take the wind out of the Raiders sails. After scoring the first PP goal of the night Viktor Valentine sets up Rare Ulrich for the big goal. And just like that the game is now ALL Montreal. 12 shots by Montreal in the third period to Halifaxs measly 1.

Period Highlight: 6. Montreal Militia , Rafe Ulrich 3 (Viktor Valentine 8, Daniel Daniil 3) at 1:05 (PP)

What a game by the boys in maroon.

King's Three Crowns

1. Rafe Ulrich, 2 goals, the dagger goal, the beautiful pass for the game winner, on top of 5 shots, 4 hits and a blocked shot. An incredible game!
2. Rahotep Tutankhamun, Rahotep was all over the ice tonight. Assisted on two goals, had a pair of shots and hits and finished the night a solid +2.
3. Piotr Czerkawski, Piotr was a beast this game, besides scoring a big goal he had 5 shots 2 hits and played nearly the most PK time on the team.

Week Four. Game 54. Halifax Raiders raiders versus Montreal Militia Militia

First Star Analysis: Rafe Ulrich Militia

This was not a game of impressive goal-tending. Both goalies struggled between the pipes but that could be accounted for by the lack of much challenge in the opposing ends. Perhaps the goalies were napping as most of the play was grinding it out in neutral territory.

A highlight reel player of the game was Rafe Ulrich of the Militia who took the first star away from all others. His 5 shots on net and 4 hits helped him to dominate the play when he was on the ice. He snuck between two defenders in the second period to slice a pass right on the tape of Piotr Czerkawski's stick who wasted no time in releasing a wrist shot right over the shoulder of the goalie.

He also scored one of his own on the power play in the third to put the Militia ahead by two and let them coast to victory as the clock ticked down.

Great work Rafe!!

Welcome back to our Player of the Game segment for the most recent matchup between the Halifax Raiders and Montreal Militia.

Our choice tonight goes to Rafe Ulrich of the Montreal Militia! Rafe was seemingly all over the ice tonight racking up two points with a goal and an assist, four hits, as well as a blocked shot. Ulrich's first and only goal of the night came very early in the third period on the powerplay. Prior to the goal, the Raiders were only down by one and were going all out offensively to get the game tied up. An unfortunate penalty by Vince Rieper for interference late in the second period gave the Militia all they needed to put the game out of reach.

Rafe Ulrich 3 (Viktor Valentine 8, Daniel Daniil 3) at 1:05 (PP)

The Militia went on to win the game 4-2.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Halifax Raiders: 36 wins on 74 faceoffs taken ( 48,6%)
Montreal Militias: 38 wins on 74 faceoffs taken (51,3%)

Close game in the faceoffs dot here. No clear advantage for any team.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Montreal Militias' center Kevin Kazarian with 10 wins on 16 faceoff taken (62,5%)
Loser: Halifax Raiders' center Leshaun King with 7 wins on 23 faceoff taken (30,4%)

Hello everyone and welcome back for Harvey's Fail of the Game.

By now, everyone in the SMJHL knows rookie Pierre Laroche-Durocher as one of the big hitters in the league, currently standing right outside the top-10 league-wise for hits despite a slower start as a rookie with 69 hits. In this game against the Montréal Militia, defenceman Charlie Schieck had the ill luck of finding himself on the receiving end of one of Laroche-Durocher's hits, and while he didn't suffer any injury, it definitely shook him up enough  to make him do the following amusing mistake once he got to the bench.

Game 54: Halifax vs. Montreal
raiders 2-4  Militia
Rookie of the Game: Vital Kravtsov

Montreal doesn't have that many rookies on their squad, and Halifax didn't do as well this game so it was hard to find a rookie really stood out to me. One person I thought of would be Montreal's goalie Petr Vrana, but I have already showcased him and it feels like a bit of a cop out using their starting goalie, mainly because if a team wins their goalie looks good and there really isn't much else to say about them. So, I kept looking and eventually landed on Vital Kravtsov. Kravtsov managed to net himself a secondary assist off of a goal by veteran right winger Radovan Hudec. But that wasn't really the reason why I chose him as rookie of the game, I chose him because he won 8/12 of the face-offs he took this game. It is very hard to get success as a center in this league, so to be able to do it as a rookie is pretty hard to do.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

Montreal was all over Halifax in this one. Shots were 28-17 and the score reflects that - 4-2 for Montreal. The Bust of the Game Award goes to Pierre Laroche-Durocher. This is a big surprise from Pierre, as he was touted as one of the blue-chip prospects in his draft class. A game like this is unheard of for such a rare talent. PLD posted a -1 with no points, no shots, no blocks, no hits... nothing. Despite his 22 minutes on the ice and ample special teams time, he couldn't lend a helping hand to his team. We're into the meat of the season now, and a showing like this just doesn't cut it anymore. Teams are fighting for spots heading into the home stretch of the season. PLD didn't look like he was fighting for a spot, instead he rolled over while his was taken.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Leshaun King

Leshaun King is the second person to repeat as winner of the Punching Bag of the Game award this season, behind Mr. Faceoffs. Clearly a generational talent, King was out there all game with a target on his back. Hit four times by four different players, King accounted for 15% of the games hits taken. This guy is going to be a future Hall of Famer and everyone’s realizing that in his rookie season. Even though he was hit 4 times, he didn’t lose the puck. His resolve is truly something to be admired.

While it's still early in the season, Halifax and Montreal both looked primed to be locked in a battle all season long for a playoff spot. The crowd could certainly feel it and the atmosphere was tense and loud. Halifax got them going early with a goal just over 3 minutes into the period. It led to a rough few minutes for the Militia, with much of their team experiencing a playoff like atmosphere for the first time in their career. They adjusted about midway through the period, tying up the score and quieting the crowd down a bit. The crowd was raucous once again when the teams came out for the second, only to be quickly silence by the Militia as they scored just six seconds into the second frame. The game-winning goal came by Rafe Ulrich on a powerplay early in the third period. Montreal was able to defend the rest of the period and send the crowd home quiet and disappointed.

Hit of the Night - Rafe Ulrich
[Image: WaterloggedTartKentrosaurus-size_restricted.gif]
The hit of the night for this game comes from Rafe Ulrich of the Montreal Militia. With two minutes left in the second period, Rafe would just bowl over Halifax defenseman Roly Rollerson. Rollerson planned on putting the body to Rafe, but Rafe decided that it wasn't going to happen so he stood the defender up at the face-off dot in the circle. The hit was so hard that it actually knocked Rollerson's helmet off, sending it flying towards the crease. Rafe was able to retain possession of the puck, and I think Rollerson's helmet landed in the next town over a few minutes later.

Game 54 Halifax Raiders vs Montreal Militia saw the Militia win the game four to two but it also a great game for Kyle Corbett of the Halifax Raiders. Kyle Corbett started the scoring for the night with a power play goal at 3:15 of the first and that would be the only lead that the Halifax Raiders would have.

In addition to his offense. Kyle Corbett physical as came in to play well. He caused two turnovers by leveling both Piotr Czerkawski and Viktor Valentine.

He was also no slouch when it came to blocking shots having three of them.

At the end of the day, though the Halifax Raiders lost but it was not because of the play of Kyle Corbett.
